Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses have faced various nurse-specific traumas in their workplaces, but there is limited understanding of the resulting outcomes and factors that contribute to them. Objective: To address this gap, the study employed the middle-range theory of nurses' psychological trauma (NPT) to examine these relationships among frontline nurses working in critical care areas. Methods: In a quantitative cross-sectional study, the study compared nurses identified as probable cases of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with those identified as not probable cases. The study investigated the nurse-specific traumas they experienced, their individual personality traits, and the buffers they possessed. The study also sought to identify specific types of nurse-specific traumas that could be associated with negative outcomes, such as alcohol and drug use. Results: It was found that PTSD-probable nurses reported higher levels of trauma from disasters and system/medically induced trauma compared to not-probable nurses. They also experienced more nonwork-related humankind traumas and displayed lower resilience. Furthermore, PTSD-probable nurses identified with trait urgency and trait avoidance motivation. Additionally, trauma from disasters was associated with alcohol use. Conclusion: The study highlights the elevated levels of trauma, lower resilience, and specific psychological traits associated with PTSD-probable nurses, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and support to mitigate the negative outcomes experienced by frontline nurses. Copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and nickel (Ni) are essential micronutrients for aquatic life, but they produce adverse effects on aquatic organisms when environmental concentrations exceed a certain threshold. The objective of this study was to analyze the taxon-specific sensitivities of aquatic life to the three metals and assess ecological risks at exposure levels prevalent in the Songhua River, China. The results showed that sensitivities to these metals varied among different taxonomic groups, with intra-taxon sensitivities being lower than inter-taxa sensitivities, and the consistency of intra-taxon sensitivity increased from phylum to order. The maximum detected concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Ni in the Songhua River were 52.7, 166.0, and 65.3 μg/L, respectively, which met the water quality standards set by China but exceeded the chronic criteria established by the USA. A probabilistic risk assessment based on chronic toxicity data revealed that these three metals posed an intermediate to high risk to aquatic animals, with maximum risk products of 36.4% for Cu, 14.3% for Ni, and 6.2% for Zn, respectively. The diatom index has been widely used in the evaluation of water ecological quality, but the applicability of the diatom index often varies in different study areas. The accuracy of the evaluation results depends on the applicability of the diatom index, especially when it is not applied to the place where it is created. In order to screen out the diatom index suitable for the evaluation of the water ecological quality of Tangwang River in northeast China, and to identify the factors affecting the accuracy of the diatom index, the community structure and water environment characteristics of 24 sample sites were investigated in Tangwang River in August 2018, and 18 diatom indices were calculated. The discriminative ability of diatom indices was analyzed using the box plot method, and the factors affecting the accuracy of the diatom index were identified by combining Pearson and Spearman correlation analyses. The results show that the discriminability of the Biological Diatom Index (BDI), Specific Pollution Sensitivity Index (IPS), Idse Leclercq (IDSE), Indice Diatomique Artois Picardie (IDAP), Diatom Eutrophication Pollution Index (EPI-D), Trophic Index (Rott TI), European Economic Community Index (CEE), and Watanabe Index (WAT) was the strongest, which could reasonably distinguish the reference group from the lightly damaged group. In general, the water ecological condition of Tangwang River Basin is good in the wet season, and the water ecological quality of about 80% of the sample sites was "moderate" or better. The main factors affecting the evaluation accuracy of the diatom index in Tangwang River Basin are the correlation strength between the diatom index and habitat quality, organic pollution, and nutrients. The coverage of diatom index species had no significant effect on the accuracy of evaluation. In order to reasonably evaluate the aquatic ecological status, it is recommended to use the diatom index, which has a good correlation with the environmental factors in the study area, or to establish a new diatom index based on the diatom community and environmental factors in the study area. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a central role in the global carbon cycle. The Huma River Basin (HRB) in China is affected by humic substances in its forests with high background values. DOM in the HRB was studied using spectroscopic techniques combined with statistical analysis in order to better understand its characteristics in natural waters affected by humic substances in forests. UV-visible parameters showed that the DOM predominantly consisted of aromatic and high-molecular-weight natural organic matter. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy-parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) recognized four characteristic components, representing humic-like substances (C1, C2, and C3) and protein-like substances (C4). Fluorescence parameters showed that the allochthonous terrestrially-derived DOM had a humic character. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra characterized the structure of DOM, containing aromatic, aliphatic, carbohydrate, and protein compounds. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that humic-like components explained approximately 86.7% of the total variance, suggesting that terrestrial humic-like substances were dominant in the HRB. Correlation coefficient matrix analysis indicated that CODMn and DOC were mainly derived from humic-like substances. The results demonstrated that the background value in the HRB was mainly attributed to terrestrial humic-like substances. Touchless interfaces allow surgeons to control medical imaging systems autonomously while maintaining total asepsis in the Operating Room. This is specially relevant as it applies to the recent outbreak of COVID-19 disease. The choice of best gestures/commands for such interfaces is a critical step that determines the overall efficiency of surgeon-computer interaction. In this regard, usability metrics such as task completion time, memorability and error rate have a long-standing as potential entities in determining the best gestures. In addition, previous works concerned with this problem utilized qualitative measures to identify the best gestures. In this work, we hypothesize that there is a correlation between gestures' qualitative properties and their usability metrics. In this regard, we conducted a user experiment with language experts to quantify gestures' properties (v). Next, we developed a gesture-based system that facilitates surgeons to control the medical imaging software in a touchless manner. Next, a usability study was conducted with neurosurgeons and the standard usability metrics (u) were measured in a systematic manner. Lastly, multi-variate correlation analysis was used to find the relations between u and v. Statistical analysis showed that the v scores were significantly correlated with the usability metrics with an R 2 ≈ 0.40 and p < 0.05. Abstract Background Patients who no-show to primary care appointments interrupt clinicians’ efforts to provide continuity of care. Prior literature reveals no-shows among diabetic patients are common. The purpose of this study is to assess whether no-shows to primary care appointments are associated with increased risk of future emergency department (ED) visits or hospital admissions among diabetics. Methods A prospective cohort study was conducted using data from 8,787 adult diabetic patients attending outpatient clinics associated with a medical center in Indiana. The outcomes examined were hospital admissions or ED visits in the 6 months (182 days) following the patient’s last scheduled primary care appointment. The Andersen-Gill extension of the Cox proportional hazard model was used to assess risk separately for hospital admissions and ED visits. Adjustment was made for variables associated with no-show status and acute care utilization such as gender, age, race, insurance and co-morbid status. The interaction between utilization of the acute care service in the six months prior to the appointment and no-show was computed for each model. BACKGROUND: Estimates of substance use (SU) in nurses is on par with that of the general population: between 6% and 8%. However, collecting sensitive information such as SU is difficult based on social desirability and fears of disclosure. AIMS: Part of a larger study surrounding nurses' self-reports of SU (n = 1,478), the purpose was to explore open-ended responses of nurses (n = 373) who were invited to "Please add any additional comments related to substance or alcohol use that you have experienced or witnessed in registered nurses." METHOD: This qualitative study employed a content analysis of 373 nurses' open-ended responses collected via an online survey. RESULTS: The majority of nurses (n = 250) forwarded comments that described SU in other nurses, while 24 comments reflected the nurse's past or current SU. Content analysis revealed the following four themes: (1) differing social network proximity to SU; (2) individual process: vulnerability to adaptive/maladaptive coping resulting in positive and negative outcomes; (3) bedside, system, and organizational spaces and effects; and (4) there are no SU issues in nursing. CONCLUSIONS: Although direct reports of SU constitute approximately one quarter of the comments forwarded, nurses reported peers' struggles with SU, including observing nurses working in patient care while impaired and the use of substances to cope with work and personal stressors.
