BackgroundArid and semi-arid regions account for about 40% of the world’s land surface area, and are the most sensitive areas to climate change, leading to a dramatic expansion of arid regions in recent decades. Ephemeral plants are crucial herbs in this area and are very sensitive to climate change, but it is still unclear which factors can determine the distribution of ephemeral plants and how the distribution of ephemeral plants responds to future climate change across the globe.AimsUnderstanding the impact of climate change on ephemeral plant distribution is crucial for sustainable biodiversity conservation.MethodsThis study explored the potential distribution of three types of ephemeral plants in arid and semi-arid regions (cold desert, hot desert, and deciduous forest) on a global scale using the MaxEnt software. We used species global occurrence data and 30 environmental factors in scientific collections.ResultsOur results showed that (1) the average value of the area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) of each species was higher than 0.95, indicating that the MaxEnt model’s simulation accuracy for each species was good; (2) distributions of cold desert and deciduous forest species were mainly determined by soil pH and annual mean temperature; the key factor that determines the distribution of hot desert species was precipitation of the driest month; and (3) the potential distribution of ephemeral plants in the cold desert was increased under one-third of climate scenarios; in the hot desert, the potential suitable distribution for Anastatica hierochuntica was decreased in more than half of the climate scenarios, but Trigonella arabica was increased in more than half of the climate scenarios. In deciduous forests, the ephemeral plant Crocus alatavicus decreased in nearly nine-tenths of climate scenarios, and Gagea filiformis was increased in 75% of climate scenarios.ConclusionsThe potential suitable distributions of ephemeral plants in the different ecosystems were closely related to their specific adaptation strategies. These results contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the potential distribution pattern of some ephemeral plants in arid and semi-arid ecosystems.

Lithium–sulfur batteries offer the potential for significantly higher energy density and cost-effectiveness. However, their progress has been hindered by challenges such as the "shuttle effect" caused by lithium polysulfides and the volume expansion of sulfur during the lithiation process. These limitations have impeded the widespread adoption of lithium–sulfur batteries in various applications. It is urgent to explore the high-performance sulfur host to improve the electrochemical performance of the sulfur electrode. Herein, bimetallic NiFe hydroxide (NiFe-LDH)-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are prepared as the sulfur host materials (NiFe-CNT@S) for loading of sulfur. On the one hand, the crosslinked CNTs can increase the electron conductivity of the sulfur host as well as disperse NiFe-LDHs nanosheets. On the other hand, NiFe-LDHs command the capability of strongly adsorbing lithium polysulfides and also accelerate their conversion, which effectively suppresses the shuttle effect problem in lithium polysulfides. Hence, the electrochemical properties of NiFe-CNT@S exhibit significant enhancements when compared with those of the sulfur-supported pure NiFe-LDHs (NiFe-LDH@S). The initial capacity of NiFe-CNT@S is reported to be 1010 mAh g−1. This value represents the maximum amount of charge that the material can store per gram when it is first synthesized or used in a battery. After undergoing 500 cycles at a rate of 2 C (1 C = 1675 mA g−1), the NiFe-CNT@S composite demonstrates a sustained capacity of 876 mAh g−1. Capacity retention is a measure of how well a battery or electrode material can maintain its capacity over repeated charge–discharge cycles, and a higher retention percentage indicates better durability and stability of the material. Physical features preserved in ice cores may provide unique records about past atmospheric variability. Linking the formation and preservation of these features and the atmospheric processes causing them is key to their interpretation as palaeoclimate proxies. We imaged ice cores from Law Dome, East Antarctica, using an intermediate layer core scanner (ILCS) and found that thin bubble-free layers (BFLs) occur multiple times per year at this site. The origin of these features is unknown. We used a previously developed age–depth scale in conjunction with regional accumulation estimated from atmospheric reanalysis data (ERA5) to estimate the year and month that the BFLs occurred, and then we performed seasonal and annual analysis to reduce the overall dating errors. We then investigated measurements of snow surface height from a co-located automatic weather station to determine snow surface features co-occurring with BFLs, as well as their estimated occurrence date. We also used ERA5 to investigate potentially relevant local/regional atmospheric processes (temperature inversions, wind scour, accumulation hiatuses and extreme precipitation) associated with BFL occurrence. Finally, we used a synoptic typing dataset of the southern Indian and southwest Pacific oceans to investigate the relationship between large-scale atmospheric patterns and BFL occurrence. Our results show that BFLs occur (1) primarily in autumn and winter, (2) in conjunction with accumulation hiatuses > 4 d, and (3) during synoptic patterns characterised by meridional atmospheric flow related to the episodic blocking and channelling of maritime moisture to the ice core site. Thus, BFLs may act as a seasonal marker (autumn/winter) and may indicate episodic changes in accumulation (such as hiatuses) associated with large-scale circulation. This study provides a pathway to the development of a new proxy for past climate in the Law Dome ice cores, specifically past snowfall conditions relating to synoptic variability over the southern Indian Ocean. Over the last decades, open innovation has received considerable attention. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence mechanism of enterprise social networks on open innovation performance from the dual perspective of inter- and intra-organisation. Structural equation model was used to test on a sample of 311 enterprises from Mainland China. Results show that external social network exerts a positive effect on open innovation performance through the mediation of external knowledge management capability. Internal social network positively affects open innovation performance via the mediating role of internal knowledge management capability. The interaction of external and internal social network enhances open innovation performance through the dual mediating effects of external and internal knowledge management capability. Furthermore, inter-organisational contract control plays a moderating role in the relationship between external knowledge management capability and open innovation performance. Intra-organisational professional control exhibits a moderating effect on the relationship between internal knowledge management capability and open innovation performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
