3. An accelerator scenario for hard X-ray free electron laser joint with high energy electron radiography

Abstract

In order to study the dynamic response of the material and the physical mechanism of the fluid dynamics, an accelerator scenario which can be applied to hard X-ray free electron laser and high energy electron radiography was proposed. This accelerator is mainly composed of a 12GeV linac, an undulator branch and an eRad beamline. In order to characterize sample's dynamic behavior in situ and real-time with XFEL and eRad simultaneously, the linac should be capable of accelerating the two kinds of beam within the same operation mode. Combining with in-vacuum and tapering techniques, the undulator branch can produce more than 1E11 photons per pulse in 0.1 precent bandwidth at 42keV. Finally, the eRad amplifying beamline with 1:10 ratio was proposed as an important complementary tool for the wider view field and density identification ability.

Abstract

Pulsed power research for military and civil applications has been conducted at the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) for more than 50 years. The pulsed power research activities include development of pulsed power components, such as different kinds of high-voltage switches, series of pulsed power sources and pulsed X-ray machines, high-current accelerators for $Z$ -pinch and flash X-ray radiography, as well as medical application and electromagnetic launch. The most recent progress of pulsed power research at CAEP will be presented.

Abstract

Low Q cavity BPM is a key to distinguish closely spaced electron bunches allowing precise beam handling for XFEL facilities operating in a multi-bunch mode at high repetition rate up to hundreds MHz. The inter-bunch signal pollution issue becomes significant when bunch separation is down to nanosecond and causes the position detection to be increasingly overestimated. Solely relying on extreme low Q to achieve sufficient decay within bunch interval leads to appreciable interference from non-signal modes due to strong overcoupling of antenna design is required. The error imposed on measured position raises a challenge to meet the goal of high resolution. Alternatively, a concept is proposed to remove the dominant part of signal pollution at the moment of sampling by intentionally shifting the phase of the last bunch signal 90degree respect to that of current bunch signal, where signal sampling is normally taken for nanosecond spaced bunches. This quadrature phase shift is defined by properly choosing the operational frequency of dipole mode regarding to the bunch frequency. Abstract

An S-band LINAC with the operating frequency of 2856 MHz and beam current of 4 A was designed for flash X-ray radiography for hydrodynamic test. The optimization of the parameters of the LINAC was processed to obtain the minimum beam radius and the maximum energy efficiency. For the purpose of reducing the beam orbits offset at the exit of LINAC, a slotted iris accelerating structure would be employed to suppress the transverse Higher Order Modes (HOMs) by cutting four radial slots in the iris to couple the HOMs to SiC loads. Abstract

The Dragon-I injector based on the induction voltage adder technique is introduced. Twelve ferrite loaded induction cells are connected in a series through central conducting stalks to achieve a pulsed voltage higher than 3.5 MV across the diode. Electrons are extracted from the velvet emitter and guided through the anode pipe by the magnets placed inside the cathode and anode shrouds. Measurements at the exit of injector show that, with an electric field of 200 kV/cm near the velvet surface and suitable magnetic field distribution, an electron beam up to 2.8 kA can be obtained with a normalized emittance of 1040π mm mrad, and energy spread of 2.1% (3σ) around the central energy of 3.5 MeV.

Abstract

Single‐atom catalysts are promising platforms for heterogeneous catalysis, especially for clean energy conversion, storage, and utilization. Although great efforts have been made to examine the bonding and oxidation state of single‐atom catalysts before and/or after catalytic reactions, when information about dynamic evolution is not sufficient, the underlying mechanisms are often overlooked. Herein, we report the direct observation of the charge transfer and bond evolution of a single‐atom Pt/C3N4 catalyst in photocatalytic water splitting by synchronous illumination X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Specifically, under light excitation, we observed Pt−N bond cleavage to form a Pt0 species and the corresponding C=N bond reconstruction; these features could not be detected on the metallic platinum‐decorated C3N4 catalyst. As expected, H2 production activity (14.7 mmol h−1 g−1) was enhanced significantly with the single‐atom Pt/C3N4 catalyst as compared to metallic Pt‐C3N4 (0.74 mmol h−1 g−1). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
