Precision measurements of space and time, like those made by the detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), are often confronted with fundamental limitations imposed by quantum mechanics. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle dictates that the position and momentum of an object cannot both be precisely measured, giving rise to an apparent limitation called the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL). Reducing quantum noise below the SQL in gravitational-wave detectors, where photons are used to continuously measure the positions of freely falling mirrors, has been an active area of research for decades. Here we show how the LIGO A+ upgrade reduced the detectors' quantum noise below the SQL by up to 3 dB while achieving a broadband sensitivity improvement, more than two decades after this possibility was first presented.

The RADiCAL Collaboration is conducting R\&D on high performance electromagnetic (EM) calorimetry to address the challenges expected in future collider experiments under conditions of high luminosity and/or high irradiation (FCC-ee, FCC-hh and fixed target and forward physics environments). Under development is a sampling calorimeter approach, known as RADiCAL modules, based on scintillation and wavelength-shifting (WLS) technologies and photosensor, including SiPM and SiPM-like technology. The modules discussed herein consist of alternating layers of very dense (W) absorber and scintillating crystal (LYSO:Ce) plates, assembled to a depth of 25 $X_0$. The scintillation signals produced by the EM showers in the region of EM shower maximum (shower max) are transmitted to SiPM located at the upstream and downstream ends of the modules via quartz capillaries which penetrate the full length of the module. The capillaries contain DSB1 organic plastic WLS filaments positioned within the region of shower max, where the shower energy deposition is greatest, and fused with quartz rod elsewhere. The wavelength shifted light from this spatially-localized shower max region is then propagated to the photosensors. This paper presents the results of an initial measurement of the time resolution of a RADiCAL module over the energy range 25 GeV $\leq$ E $\leq$ 150 GeV using the H2 electron beam at CERN. The data indicate an energy dependence of the time resolution that follows the functional form: $\sigma_{t} = a/\sqrt{E} \oplus b$, where a = 256 $\sqrt{GeV}$~ps and b = 17.5 ps. The time resolution measured at the highest electron beam energy for which data was currently recorded (150 GeV) was found to be $\sigma_{t}$ = 27 ps.

The unique band structure in topological materials frequently results in unusual magneto-transport phenomena, one of which is in-plane longitudinal negative magnetoresistance (NMR) with the magnetic field aligned parallel to the electrical current direction. This NMR is widely considered as a hallmark of chiral anomaly in topological materials. Here we report the observation of in-plane NMR in the topological material ZrTe5 when the in-plane magnetic field is both parallel and perpendicular to the current direction, revealing an unusual case of quantum transport beyond the chiral anomaly. We find that a general theoretical model, which considers the combined effect of Berry curvature and orbital moment, can quantitatively explain this in-plane NMR. Our results provide new insights into the understanding of in-plane NMR in topological materials.

High performance calorimetry conducted at future hadron colliders, such as the FCC-hh, poses a significant challenge for applying current detector technologies due to unprecedented beam luminosities and radiation fields. Solutions include developing scintillators that are capable of separating events at the sub-fifty picosecond level while also maintaining performance after extreme and constant neutron and ionizing radiation exposure. The RADiCAL is an approach that incorporates radiation tolerant materials in a sampling 'shashlik' style calorimeter configuration, using quartz capillaries filled with organic liquid or polymer-based wavelength shifters embedded in layers of tungsten plates and LYSO crystals. This novel design intends to address the Priority Research Directions (PRD) for calorimetry listed in the DOE Basic Research Needs (BRN) workshop for HEP Instrumentation. Here we report preliminary results from an experimental run at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility in June 2022. Gate tunable two-dimensional (2D) superconductors offer significant advantages when studying superconducting phase transitions. Here, we address superconductivity in exfoliated 1T'-MoTe2 monolayers with an intrinsic band gap of ~7.3 meV using electrostatic doping. Despite large differences in the dispersion of the conduction and the valence bands, superconductivity can be achieved easily for both electrons and holes. The onset of superconductivity occurs near 7-8K for both charge carrier types. This temperature is much higher than in bulk samples. Also the in-plane upper critical field is strongly enhanced and exceeds the BCS Pauli limit in both cases. Gap information is extracted using point-contact spectroscopy. The gap ratio exceeds multiple times the value expected for BCS weak-coupling. All these observations suggest a strong enhancement of the pairing interaction.

Future HEP experiments present stringent challenges to inorganic scintillators in both fast timing response and radiation tolerance. This paper reports recent progress in developing ultrafast inorganic scintillators with sub-ns decay time for future precision timing detectors and high-rate experiments. Performance of fast and ultrafast crystals with mass production capability are compared to CsI crystals which are used for the Mu2e calorimeter. Examples are LYSO:Ce, BaF2 and BaF2:Y, which are considered for Mu2e-II. Crystal radiation hardness against gamma-rays and hadrons is reported. Future HEP experiments at the energy and intensity frontiers present stringent challenges to inorganic scintillators in radiation tolerance, ultrafast time response and cost. This paper reports recent progress in radiation hard, ultrafast, and cost-effective inorganic scintillators for future HEP experiments. Examples are LYSO crystals for a precision time of flight detector, LuAG ceramics for an ultracompact, radiation hard shashlik sampling calorimeter, BaF2:Y crystals for an ultrafast calorimeter, and cost-effective scintillators for a homogeneous hadron calorimeter. The geometric phase (Berry phase) of an electronic wave function is the fundamental basis of the topological properties in solids. Modulating band structure provides a tuning knob for the Berry phase, and in the extreme case drives a topological phase transition. Despite the significant developments in topological materials study, it remains a challenge to tune between different topological phases while tracing the impact of the Berry phase on quantum charge transport, in the same material. Here we report both in a magnetotransport study of ZrTe5. By tuning the band structure with uniaxial strain, we directly map a weak- to strong- topological phase transition through a gapless Dirac semimetal phase via quantum oscillations. Moreover, we demonstrate the impact of the strain-tunable spin-dependent Berry phase on the Zeeman effect through the amplitude of the quantum oscillations. We show that such a spin-dependent Berry phase, largely neglected in solid-state systems, is critical in modeling quantum oscillations in Dirac bands in topological materials.

ZrTe5 is a layered material that exhibits intricate topological effects. Intensive theoretically and experimental efforts have been devoted to try to understand the physics in this materials. In this paper the temperature dependent magneto-transport properties of ZrTe5 thin flakes are investigated. A characteristic temperature T* is observed in the temperature dependence of three different types of magnetoresistance simultaneously, which are the saturated Hall anomaly, the chiral anomaly and the longitudinal magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the value of T* decreases monotonically from 200K to 160K with increasing thickness of the ZrTe5 thin flakes from 42nm to 89nm. Temperature induced topological phase transitions are attributed to the cause of such anomaly in the three types of magnetoresistance at T*. Our findings provide a multi-parameter indicator for the emergence of topological phase transition in ZrTe5 and could be extended to the study of other topological materials. The temperature dependence of the three types of magnetoresistance also shed light on the role of anomalous Hall Effect in the transport properties of ZrTe5., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figues

The sensitivity of current and planned gravitational wave interferometric detectors is limited, in the most critical frequency region around 100 Hz, by a combination of quantum noise and thermal noise. The latter is dominated by Brownian noise: thermal motion originating from the elastic energy dissipation in the dielectric coatings used in the interferometer mirrors. The energy dissipation is a material property characterized by the mechanical loss angle. We have identified mixtures of titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) and germanium dioxide (GeO$_2$) that show internal dissipations at a level of 1 $\times 10^{-4}$, low enough to provide almost a factor of two improvement on the level of Brownian noise with respect to the state-of-the-art materials. We show that by using a mixture of 44% TiO$_2$ and 56% GeO$_2$ in the high refractive index layers of the interferometer mirrors, it would be possible to achieve a thermal noise level in line with the design requirements. These results are a crucial step forward to produce the mirrors needed to meet the thermal noise requirements for the planned upgrades of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors.

State-of-the-art deep neural networks (DNNs) have been proved to have excellent performance on unsupervised domain adaption (UDA). However, recent work shows that DNNs perform poorly when being attacked by adversarial samples, where these attacks are implemented by simply adding small disturbances to the original images. Although plenty of work has focused on this, as far as we know, there is no systematic research on the robustness of unsupervised domain adaption model. Hence, we discuss the robustness of unsupervised domain adaption against adversarial attacking for the first time. We benchmark various settings of adversarial attack and defense in domain adaption, and propose a cross domain attack method based on pseudo label. Most importantly, we analyze the impact of different datasets, models, attack methods and defense methods. Directly, our work proves the limited robustness of unsupervised domain adaptation model, and we hope our work may facilitate the community to pay more attention to improve the robustness of the model against attacking., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures
