As one of the latest emerging HVAC technologies, the Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system with heat recovery (HR) configurations has obtained extensive attention from both the academia and industry. Compared with the conventional VRF systems with heat pump (HP) configurations, VRF-HR is capable of recovering heat from cooling zones to heating zones and providing simultaneous cooling and heating operations. This can further lead to substantial energy saving potential and more flexible zonal control. In this paper, a novel model is developed to simulate the energy performance of VRF-HR systems. It adheres to a more physics-based development with the ability to simulate the refrigerant loop performance and consider the dynamics of more operational parameters, which is essential for representing more advanced control logics. Another key feature of the model is the introduction of component-level curves for indoor units and outdoor units instead of overall performance curves for the entire system, and thus it requires much fewer user-specified performance curves as model inputs. The validation study shows good agreements between the simulated energy use from the new VRF-HR model and the laboratory measurement data across all operational modes at sub-hourly time steps. The model has been adopted in the official release of the EnergyPlus simulation program since Version 8.6, which enables more accurate and robust assessments of VRF-HR systems to support their applications in energy retrofit of existing buildings or design of zero-net-energy buildings. Operational faults are common in the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of existing buildings, leading to a decrease in energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Various fault detection and diagnostic methods have been developed to identify and analyze HVAC operational faults at the component or subsystem level. However, current methods lack a holistic approach to predicting the overall impacts of faults at the building level—an approach that adequately addresses the coupling between various operational components, the synchronized effect between simultaneous faults, and the dynamic nature of fault severity. This study introduces the novel development of a fault-modeling feature in EnergyPlus which fills in the knowledge gap left by previous studies. This paper presents the design and implementation of the new feature in EnergyPlus and discusses in detail the fault-modeling challenges faced. The new fault-modeling feature enables EnergyPlus to quantify the impacts of faults on building energy use and occupant comfort, thus supporting the decision making of timely fault corrections. Including actual building operational faults in energy models also improves the accuracy of the baseline model, which is critical in the measurement and verification of retrofit or commissioning projects. As an example, EnergyPlus version 8.6 was used to investigate the impacts of a number of typical operational faults in an office building across several U.S. climate zones. The results demonstrate that the faults have significant impacts on building energy performance as well as on occupant thermal comfort. The evaporative-cooling roof is a popular passive energy conservation technique. This article presents a novel approach for modelling and analysing the influence of evaporation on roof thermal performance. A multivariate nonlinear model was developed for the prediction of the evaporation rate from porous tile. A computer program was then developed based on the one-dimensional roof unsteady heat transfer theory. Finally, the computer program and hourly weather data of Guangzhou, China, were used to analyse the impacts of evaporation (including the evaporation start time and water-application frequency) and slope orientation on roof thermal performance. Evaporation beginning at 11:00 can reduce the external surface temperatures of a horizontal roof and 30°-inclined east-sloping and west-sloping roofs by up to 11.3, 10.7, and 9.8 °C, respectively, from those of a non-evaporative roof. This, in turn, can reduce the peak-hour (16:00–20:00) internal surface heat flux. Additionally, with the horizontal roof, the reduction in the peak-hour heat flux can be doubled if the evaporative layer is frequently replenished with water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As one form of passive cooling, night ventilation (NV) has been proven effective to improve the building energy performance. In previous studies, however, fixed NV operating strategies were usually pre-defined, ignoring the weather condition variations over the whole operation process, the influence of outdoor humidity on NV's efficiency, and NV's integrated performance with active air conditioning systems. Such strategies may have potentials for further improvements. This paper presents a systematic approach to address the dynamic optimization of integrated operation of NV and active building air conditioning using typical variable–air–volume (VAV) systems as the case. In the optimization scheme, the physical model is developed per differential algebraic equations (DAEs). The simultaneous collocation method is introduced to translate the dynamic optimization into a nonlinear program, which is then implemented in the GAMS platform and handled by IPOPT solver. The study results indicate that the optimized strategies lead to a remarkable energy saving of 23.19–49.31% in different climate conditions compared to the traditional local control scheme without NV, and a saving of 14.97–39.70% compared to that with pre-defined NV. Previous work has demonstrated the modest impact of environmental interventions that manipulate lighting, sound, or temperature on sleep inertia symptoms. The current study sought to expand on previous work and measure the impact of a multimodal intervention that collectively manipulated light, sound, and ambient temperature on sleep inertia. Participants slept in the lab for four nights and were awoken each morning by either a traditional alarm clock or the multimodal intervention. Feelings of sleep inertia were measured each morning through Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT) assessments and ratings of sleepiness and mood at five time-points. While there was little overall impact of the intervention, the participant's chronotype and the length of the lighting exposure on intervention mornings both influenced sleep inertia symptoms. Moderate evening types who received a shorter lighting exposure (≤15 min) demonstrated more lapses relative to the control condition, whereas intermediate types exhibited a better response speed and fewer lapses. Conversely, moderate evening types who experienced a longer light exposure (>15 min) during the intervention exhibited fewer false alarms over time. The results suggest that the length of the environmental intervention may play a role in mitigating feelings of sleep inertia, particularly for groups who might exhibit stronger feelings of sleep inertia, including evening types. The rising energy consumption in residential buildings within the hot summer and cold winter (HSCW) climate zone, driven by occupants' pursuit of improved thermal comfort, necessitates effective energy conservation measures. This study established urban building energy models for 32,145 residential buildings in Changsha City, China, and conducted a comprehensive retrofit analysis of seven energy conservation measures (ECMs). Additionally, the study assessed the impact of residents' conscious energy-saving behaviors concerning air conditioner (AC) control. The research commenced by creating six baseline models representative of the diverse building stock. Identifying seven commonly used ECMs, the study examined the potential of each measure for enhancing energy efficiency. To facilitate the analysis, a dedicated toolkit, AutoBPS-Retrofit, was developed to efficiently modify the baseline model for each ECM. Furthermore, the investigation delved into the investment cost of implementing the ECMs and evaluated their simple payback year (PBP) and net present value (NPV). The results demonstrate that tailored retrofit plans are essential when addressing envelope improvements, varying according to building types and ages. Retrofits targeting lighting systems offer both promising energy savings and favorable economic viability, albeit subject to residents' preferences. Alternatively, upgrading the AC systems emerges as the most energy-efficient approach, yet the economic assessment raises concerns. The study's findings offer practical insights for governments seeking to establish effective carbon reduction goals and policies. Abstract With development of Chinese space science and technology, plenty of microgravity experiments will be conducted in the Chinese Space Station to be built, and therefore demand for high-precision electromechanical equipment increases substantially. In this paper, a comprehensive accuracy analysis of a new type of auto lock-or-release (L/R) mechanism, which is applied in the Space Station Microgravity Platform (SSMP), is implemented. Firstly, two models (vector analysis model and vector differential model) are, therefore, proposed to analyze output errors of the mechanism. Due to transmission errors from the transmission chain of the gear mechanism, influence factors on axial errors of lead screws are analyzed using design of experiment (DOE) for factor sensitivities. It shows that manufacturing tolerances of the lead screw is the dominant factor. Then, verification of the two proposed accuracy models is comparatively implemented through Monte Carlo (MC) simulation and DOE. Using the present accuracy model, location errors of the lead screw throughout the mechanism's working stroke are illustrated, where the non-synchronous error of the mechanism is particularly discussed. A linear relation between the variance of the non-synchronous error and that of the structural error is established, followed by analyzing influence factors on the non-synchronous error. Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems vary the refrigerant flow to meet the dynamic zone thermal loads, leading to more efficient operations than other system types. This paper introduces a new model that simulates the energy performance of VRF systems in the heat pump (HP) operation mode. Compared with the current VRF-HP models implemented in EnergyPlus, the new VRF system model has more component models based on physics and thus has significant innovations in: (1) enabling advanced controls, including variable evaporating and condensing temperatures in the indoor and outdoor units, and variable fan speeds based on the temperature and zone load in the indoor units, (2) adding a detailed refrigerant pipe heat loss calculation using refrigerant flow rate, operational conditions, pipe length, and pipe insulation materials, (3) improving accuracy of simulation especially in partial load conditions, and (4) improving the usability of the model by significantly reducing the number of user input performance curves. The VRF-HP model is implemented in EnergyPlus and validated with measured data from field tests. Results show that the new VRF-HP model provides more accurate estimate of the VRF-HP system performance, which is key to determining code compliance credits as well as utilities incentive for VRF technologies. Building sensing technologies have evolved rapidly in the last two decades in aid of monitoring building environment and energy system performance. A series of occupancy sensing systems were developed to track the occupant behavior in the indoor space. Occupancy-based building system control is defined as a control method that adjusts the building system operation schedules and setpoints based on the measured occupant behavior and has been identified as a smart building control strategy that can improve building energy efficiency as well as occupant comfort. Some studies demonstrated energy-saving potential and comfort-maintaining capability from occupancy-based control. This study adopted a first-of-its-kind side-by-side experimental approach to quantify the performance of the occupancy-based control in commercial buildings. Three state-of-the-art occupancy sensing technologies were integrated into the real-time Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system control in this study. Their detection accuracy and its effectiveness on energy-saving and thermal comfort were analyzed. It was found that the occupancy-based control can maintain good thermal comfort and perceived indoor air quality with a satisfaction ratio greater than 80%. Although the daily energy-saving varied with occupancy sensor accuracy and outdoor environment conditions, the weekly averaged energy saving was between 17 and 24%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban green space (UGS) plays a pivotal role in enhancing citizens' living standards, well-being, and overall physical and mental health. As urbanization continues to progress, ensuring equitable access to UGS becomes increasingly vital in addressing the social resource disparities. This paper proposes an innovative approach to inform UGS planning and updates, placing a strong emphasis on equitable UGS distribution. In pursuit of a more balanced UGS layout, we present a novel recreational demand model that can evaluate the citizen's recreational preferences by taking into account the population activity levels and the agglomeration effect. Leveraging point of interest (POI) data within the geographic information system (GIS) platform, we quantitatively analyze these factors. Additionally, we propose a refined resistance model, enhancing the accuracy of UGS update cost estimation. Applying these models, we undertake a case study in Changsha City to advance UGS update strategies. Our findings reveal disparities not only across different city sectors but also within individual spaces, underscoring the unequal distribution of diverse UGS resources. The proposed models can effectively guide the incorporation of new UGS points in urban planning, mitigating the challenge of inequitable UGS resource allocation. The study provides a new approach to more comprehensively evaluate the UGS quality and offers additional valuable insights for improved UGS planning, and therefore, contributes to fostering a more just, inclusive and sustainable urban environment. [Display omitted] • Courtyard buildings are undergoing a spontaneous evolution, characterized by courtyards being roofed (CBR). • The CBR phenomenon is diverse and has a positive effect on the energy efficiency of existing buildings. • By harvesting solar energy and storing heat, CBR can reduce heat dissipation and shorten the heating period. • The light transmittance of the material and the heat storage space are key factors affecting energy efficiency of CBR. Courtyard building is an important type of vernacular architecture, widely distributed in different climate zones around the world. Traditionally, courtyards are characterized by opening to the sky, providing buffer spaces for ventilation and light for the surrounding buildings. However, in Hebei, China, local buildings are showing an evolution trend characterized by the courtyards being roofed (CBR). This spontaneous evolution presents the diversity of CBR technologies (CBRTs), including light-transmitting CBRTs (T-CBRTs) and non-light-transmitting CBRTs (NT-CBRTs). Based on field measurements and simulation technology, the improvement effect of CBR on building energy efficiency (EE) is analyzed, and the EE of different CBRTs is compared. The results show that, T-CBRT and NT-CBRT can reduce the annual total energy consumption of open courtyards by 19.97% and 15.41% respectively without upgrading the original envelope structure. The analysis of the impact mechanism shows that CBRT increases the temperature of the courtyard and the room by improving the solar energy collection efficiency and expanding the heat storage space, which effectively reduces the heat leakage caused by the envelope and ventilation, and shortens the heating time. The light transmittance of the roof material is the most critical parameter affecting the EE of T-CBRT, and the roof height largely determines the performance of NT-CBRT. Multi-layer glass or concrete panels are not the best choice for CBRT roofing materials, and plastic films or polycarbonate sheets with high light transmittance and anti-aging are recommended. • A PV assisted ground source heat pump and air source heat pump (PVGSHP-ASHP) system was proposed. • Performance for three GSHP systems were simulated and compared in depth. • Economic optimization of the integrated operation of the PVGSHP-ASHP system was carried out. • The proposed system can solve the load imbalance problem in hot summer and cold winter zones while improving the COP of GSHP and reducing the system cost. The ground source heat pump (GSHP) system is widely recognized as an efficient, clean and economical renewable energy technology for buildings, and can be utilized for building cooling, heating and hot water supply. In the hot summer and cold winter zones of China, however, the total thermal load (heating load and hot water load) of GSHP systems is greater than the cooling load, which may cause a significant soil temperature drop and GSHP performance deterioration. To solve the above problems, a photovoltaic (PV) assisted GSHP and air source heat pump system (PVGSHP-ASHP) was proposed. This paper investigated the performance and feasibility of the PVGSHP-ASHP system, using a case campus building in Changsha city, China. The PVGSHP-ASHP system was firstly established by TRNSYS, and then, its operational performance was evaluated and compared with the PV assisted GSHP (PVGSHP) system and the PV assisted GSHP and electric heater (PVGSHP-EH) system. Finally, the economic optimization of the integrated operation of the PVGSHP-ASHP system was carried out with the combined simulation of TRNSYS and GenOpt. The results showed that for the PVGSHP system, the soil temperature reduced from 18.1 °C to 11.8 °C after 15 years of operation, which caused a decrease in the annual coefficient of performance of the GSHP (COP GSHP) and an increase in the annual electricity consumption. Although the PVGSHP-EH system can solve the load imbalance problem, its annual lifecycle cost (ALCC) increased by 39.3 % due to the low efficiency of the EH. The PVGSHP-ASHP system can solve the appeal problem with high annual COP GSHP and COP sys values of 3.49 kW/kW and 4.69 kW/kW, respectively, and only 71,700 kWh of the annual electricity consumption, while its ALCC was the lowest at 99,223 CNY, which was 8.1 % lower than the PVGSHP system. After optimization, the ALCC of the PVGSHP-ASHP system reached the minimized value of 91,158 CNY, with a reduction of 8.1 %. These findings can provide new ways to solve the load mismatch problem of GSHP systems while enhancing the system efficiency in the hot summer and cold winter zones of China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small commercial buildings in the United States consume 47% of the total primary energy of the buildings sector. Retrofitting small and medium commercial buildings poses a huge challenge for owners because they usually lack the expertise and resources to identify and evaluate cost-effective energy retrofit strategies. This paper presents the Commercial Building Energy Saver (CBES), an energy retrofit analysis toolkit, which calculates the energy use of a building, identifies and evaluates retrofit measures in terms of energy savings, energy cost savings and payback. The CBES Toolkit includes a web app (APP) for end users and the CBES Application Programming Interface (API) for integrating CBES with other energy software tools. The toolkit provides a rich set of features including: (1) Energy Benchmarking providing an Energy Star score, (2) Load Shape Analysis to identify potential building operation improvements, (3) Preliminary Retrofit Analysis which uses a custom developed pre-simulated database and, (4) Detailed Retrofit Analysis which utilizes real-time EnergyPlus simulations. CBES includes 100 configurable energy conservation measures (ECMs) that encompass IAQ, technical performance and cost data, for assessing 7 different prototype buildings in 16 climate zones in California and 6 vintages. A case study of a small office building demonstrates the use of the toolkit for retrofit analysis. The development of CBES provides a new contribution to the field by providing a straightforward and uncomplicated decision making process for small and medium business owners, leveraging different levels of assessment dependent upon user background, preference and data availability.
