Image denoising is a critical task in various scientific fields such as medical imaging and material characterization, where the accurate recovery of underlying structures from noisy data is essential. Although supervised denoising techniques have achieved significant advancements, they typically require large datasets of paired clean-noisy images for training. Unsupervised methods, while not reliant on paired data, typically necessitate a set of unpaired clean images for training, which are not always accessible. In this paper, we propose a physics-augmented deep learning with adversarial domain adaption (PDA-Net) framework for unsupervised image denoising, with applications to denoise real-world scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. Our PDA-Net leverages the underlying physics to simulate and envision the ground truth for denoised STM images. Additionally, built upon Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), we incorporate a cycle-consistency module and a domain adversarial module into our PDA-Net to address the challenge of lacking paired training data and achieve information transfer between the simulated and real experimental domains. Finally, we propose to implement feature alignment and weight-sharing techniques to fully exploit the similarity between simulated and real experimental images, thereby enhancing the denoising performance in both the simulation and experimental domains. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed PDA-Net successfully enhances the quality of STM images, offering promising applications to enhance scientific discovery and accelerate experimental quantum material research.

We propose a minimalist architecture for achieving various crystalline-symmetry-protected Majorana modes in an array of coupled quantum dots. Our framework is motivated by the recent experimental demonstrations of two-site and three-site artificial Kitaev chains in a similar setup. We find that introducing a $\pi$-phase domain wall in the Kitaev chain leads to a pair of mirror-protected Majorana zero modes located at or near the junction. Joining two $\pi$-junctions into a closed loop, we can simulate two distinct classes of two-dimensional higher-order topological superconducting phases, both carrying symmetry-protected Majorana modes around the sample corners. As an extension of the $\pi$-junction, we further consider a general vertex structure where $n$ Kitaev chains meet, i.e., a Kitaev $n$-vertex. We prove that such an $n$-vertex, if respecting a dihedral symmetry group $D_n$, necessarily carries $n$ vertex-bound Majorana modes protected by the $D_n$ symmetry. Resilience of the junction and vertex Majorana bound states against disorder and correlation effects is also discussed. Like electrons, Cooper pairs can carry a monopole charge if the pairing electrons come from two or more Fermi surfaces with different Chern numbers. In such an instance, a superconductor is necessarily nodal due to an inherent topological pairing obstruction. In this work, we show that a similar obstruction is also possible when there is only one Fermi surface involved in the pairing process. By developing a Chern-vorticity theorem, we have identified a class of Fermi surfaces with a quantized dipolar Berry flux pattern, where all intra-Fermi-surface Cooper pairings are ``dipole-obstructed" and nodal. As a real-world application, we find that the dipole obstruction plays a crucial role in stabilizing the superconducting nodal structure for $j=3/2$ half-Heusler compounds., Comment: 6+9 pages, 3+5 figures

We show that a three-dimensional (3D) fully gapped type-II superconductor can feature emergent in-gap Fermi surfaces of Caroli-de Gennes Matricon (CdGM) quasiparticles in the presence of an Abrikosov vortex lattice. In particular, these CdGM Fermi surfaces manifest in the emergent 3D band structure enabled by the intervortex tunneling physics, and their stability is guaranteed by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological index. By developing an effective analytical theory, we find that each vortex line carrying a 1D nodal dispersion is a sufficient condition for the vortex lattice to form CdGM Fermi surfaces. Following this prediction, in-gap CdGM Fermi surfaces are numerically confirmed in a microscopic vortex-lattice simulation of a superconducting Dirac semimetal with an $s$-wave spin-singlet pairing, which is directly applicable to a large class of type-II superconductors such as LiFeAs. Remarkably, the CdGM Fermi surfaces persist even when the normal state is deformed to a doped insulator of trivial band topology. Topological superconductors are a class of unconventional superconducting materials featuring sub-gap zero-energy Majorana bound modes that hold promise as a building block for topological quantum computing. In this work, we study the realization of second-order topology that defines anomalous gapless boundary modes in a two-orbital superconductor with spin-orbital couplings. We reveal a time-reversal symmetry-breaking second-order topological superconducting phase with $d+id$-wave orbital-dependent paring without the need for the external magnetic field. Remarkably, this orbital-active $d$-wave paring gives rise to anomalous zero-energy Majorana corner modes, which is in contrast to conventional chiral $d$-wave pairing, accommodating one-dimensional Majorana edge modes. Recent advances in delicate topology have expanded the classification of topological bands, but its presence in solid-state materials remains elusive. Here we show that delicate topology naturally emerges in the Luttinger-Kohn model that describes many semiconductors and semimetals. In particular, the Luttinger semimetal is found to be a quantum critical point leading to a quantized jump of an integer-valued delicate topological invariant. Away from this criticality, we have identified new types of electronic insulators and semimetals with intertwined stable and delicate topologies. They all carry gapless surface states that transform anomalously under rotation symmetry. We propose a minimal interacting lattice model for two-dimensional class-$D$ higher-order topological superconductors with no free-fermion counterpart. A Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type constraint is proposed and applied to guide our lattice model construction. Our model exhibits a trivial product ground state in the weakly interacting regime, whereas, increasing electron interactions provoke a novel topological quantum phase transition to a $D_4$-symmetric higher-order topological superconducting state. The symmetry-protected Majorana corner modes are numerically confirmed with the matrix-product-state technique. Topological band theory predicts a $\mathbb{Z}$ classification of three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetals (DSMs) at the single-particle level. Namely, an arbitrary number of identical bulk Dirac nodes will always remain locally stable and gapless in the single-particle band spectrum, as long as the protecting symmetry is preserved. In this work, we find that this single-particle classification for $C_n$-symmetric DSMs will break down to $\mathbb{Z}_{n/\text{gcd}(2,n)}$ in the presence of symmetry-preserving electron interactions. Our theory is based on a dimensional reduction strategy which reduces a 3D Dirac fermions to 1D building blocks, i.e., vortex-line modes, while respecting all the key symmetries. Using bosonization technique, we find that there exists a minimal number $N=n/\text{gcd}(2,n)$ such that the collection of vortex-line modes in $N$ copies of DSMs can be symmetrically eliminated via four-fermion interactions. While this gapping mechanism does not have any free-fermion counterpart, it yields an intuitive ``electron-trion coupling" picture. By developing a topological field theory for DSMs and further checking the anomaly-free condition, we independently arrive at the same classification results. Vortices in chiral topological superconductors are known for trapping Majorana zero modes as a signature response to their bulk-state topologies. In this work, we establish a similar bulk-vortex correspondence for two-dimensional $C_n$-protected class D higher-order topological superconductors, in which a quantum vortex will universally trap a pair of $C_n$-protected Majorana bound states with $\hat{z}$-directional angular momenta $J_z=0$ and $J_z=n/2$, respectively. This intriguing one-to-one mapping between anomalous vortex modes and higher-order topology can be systematically derived through a model-independent patch construction approach. As a proof of concept, we present an exactly solvable model to confirm the proposed vortex Majorana modes. We show that lattice dislocations of topological iron-based superconductors such as FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ will intrinsically trap non-Abelian Majorana quasiparticles, in the absence of any external magnetic field. Our theory is motivated by the recent experimental observations of normal-state topology and surface magnetism that coexist with superconductivity in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, the combination of which naturally evokes an emergent second-order topological superconductivity in a two-dimensional subsystem spanned by screw or edge dislocations. This exemplifies a new embedded higher-order topological phase in class D, where Majorana zero modes appear around the "corners" of a low-dimensional embedded subsystem, instead of those of the full crystal. A nested domain wall theory is developed to understand the origin of these defect Majorana zero modes. When the surface magnetism is absent, we further find that $s_{\pm}$ pairing symmetry itself is capable of inducing a different type of class-DIII embedded higher-order topology with defect-bound Majorana Kramers pairs. We also provide detailed discussions on the real-world material candidates for our proposals, including FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, LiFeAs, $\beta$-PdBi$_2$, and heterostructures of bismuth, etc. Our work establishes lattice defects as a new venue to achieve high-temperature topological quantum information processing., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We propose a new Rashba-free mechanism to realize topological superconductivity with electron-phonon interaction. In the presence of a magnetic field, electron-phonon interaction with small momentum transfer is found to favor spin-triplet Cooper pairing. This process facilitates the formation of chiral topological superconductivity even when Rashba spin-orbital coupling is absent. As a proof of concept, we propose an experimentally feasible heterostructure to systematically study the entangled relationship among forward-phonon scatterings, Rashba spin-orbital couplings, pairing symmetries, and superconducting topology. A lattice symmetry, if being nonsymmorphic, is defined by combining a point group symmetry with a fractional lattice translation that cannot be removed by changing the lattice origin. Nonsymmorphic symmetry has a substantial influence on both the connectivity and topological properties of electronic band structures in solid-state quantum materials. In this article, we review how nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetries can drive and further protect the emergence of exotic fermionic quasiparticles, including Dirac, M\"obius and hourglass fermions, that manifest as the defining energy band signatures for a plethora of gapless or gapped topological phases of matter. We first provide a classification of energy band crossings in crystalline solids, with an emphasis on symmetry-enforced band crossings that feature a nonsymmorphic-symmetry origin. In particular, we will discuss four distinct classes of nonsymmorphic-symmetry-protected topological states as well as their signature fermionic modes: (1) a $Z_2$ topological nonsymmorphic crystalline insulator with two-dimensional surface Dirac fermions; (2) a Dirac semimetal with three dimensional bulk-state Dirac nodes pinned at certain high symmetry momenta; (3) a topological M\"obius insulator with massless surface modes that resemble the topological structure of a M\"obius twist (dubbed as M\"obius fermions); (4) a time-reversal-invariant version of M\"obius insulators with hourglass-shaped massless surface states (dubbed as hourglass fermions). Superconducting vortices are promising traps to confine non-Abelian Majorana quasi-particles. It has been widely believed that bulk-state topology, of either normal-state or superconducting ground-state wavefunctions, is crucial for enabling Majorana zero modes in solid-state systems. This common belief has shaped two major search directions for Majorana modes, in either intrinsic topological superconductors or trivially superconducting topological materials. Here we show that Majorana-carrying superconducting vortex is not exclusive to bulk-state topology, but can arise from topologically trivial quantum materials as well. We predict that the trivial bands in superconducting HgTe-class materials are responsible for inducing anomalous vortex topological physics that goes beyond any existing theoretical paradigms. A feasible scheme of strain-controlled Majorana engineering and experimental signatures for vortex Majorana modes are also discussed. In this work, we establish a new theoretical paradigm for vortex Majorana physics in the recently discovered topological iron-based superconductors (tFeSCs). While tFeSCs are widely accepted as an exemplar of topological insulators (TIs) with intrinsic $s$-wave superconductivity, our theory implies that such common belief could be oversimplified. Our main finding is that the normal-state bulk Dirac nodes, usually ignored in TI-based vortex Majorana theories for tFeSCs, will play a key role of determining the vortex state topology. In particular, the interplay between TI and Dirac nodal bands will lead to multiple competing topological phases for a superconducting vortex line in tFeSCs, including an unprecedented hybrid topological vortex state that carries both Majorana bound states and a gapless dispersion. Remarkably, this exotic hybrid vortex phase generally exists in the vortex phase diagram for our minimal model for tFeSCs and is directly relevant to tFeSC candidates such as LiFeAs.When the four-fold rotation symmetry is broken by vortex-line tilting or curving, the hybrid vortex gets topologically trivialized and becomes Majorana-free, which could explain the puzzle of ubiquitous trivial vortices observed in LiFeAs. Origin of Majorana signal in other tFeSC candidates such as FeTe$_x$Se$_{1-x}$ and CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ are also interpreted within our theory framework. We develop a general theory for two-dimensional (2D) anomalous Floquet higher-order topological superconductors (AFHOTSC), which are dynamical Majorana-carrying phases of matter with no static counterpart. Despite the triviality of its bulk Floquet bands, an AFHOTSC generically features the simultaneous presence of corner-localized Majorana modes at both zero and $\pi/T$ quasi-energies, a phenomenon beyond the scope of any static topological band theory. We show that the key to AFHOTSC is its unavoidable singular behavior in the phase spectrum of the bulk time-evolution operator. By mapping such evolution-phase singularities to the stroboscopic boundary signatures, we classify all 2D AFHOTSCs that are protected by a rotation group symmetry in symmetry class D. We further extract a higher-order topological index for unambiguously predicting the presence of Floquet corner Majorana modes, which we confirm numerically. Various exotic topological phases of Floquet systems have been shown to arise from crystalline symmetries. Yet, a general theory for Floquet topology that is applicable to all crystalline symmetry groups is still in need. In this work, we propose such a theory for (effectively) non-interacting Floquet crystals. We first introduce quotient winding data to classify the dynamics of the Floquet crystals with equivalent symmetry data, and then construct dynamical symmetry indicators (DSIs) to sufficiently indicate the "inherently dynamical" Floquet crystals. The DSI and quotient winding data, as well as the symmetry data, are all computationally efficient since they only involve a small number of Bloch momenta. We demonstrate the high efficiency by computing all elementary DSI sets for all spinless and spinful plane groups using the mathematical theory of monoid, and find a large number of different nontrivial classifications, which contain both first-order and higher-order 2+1D anomalous Floquet topological phases. Using the framework, we further find a new 3+1D anomalous Floquet second-order topological insulator (AFSOTI) phase with anomalous chiral hinge modes., Comment: Close to the published version

We establish quasi-two-dimensional thin films of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) as a new high-temperature platform for hosting intrinsic time-reversal-invariant helical topological superconductivity (TSC). Based on the combination of Dirac surface state and bulk extended $s$-wave pairing, our theory should be directly applicable to a large class of experimentally established FeSCs, opening a new TSC paradigm. In particular, an applied electric field serves as a "topological switch" for helical Majorana edge modes in FeSC thin films, allowing for an experimentally feasible design of gate-controlled helical Majorana circuits. Applying an in-plane magnetic field drives the helical TSC phase into a higher-order TSC carrying corner-localized Majorana zero modes. We show that Floquet chiral topological superconductivity arises naturally in Josephson junctions made of magnetic topological insulator-superconductor sandwich structures. The Josephson phase modulation associated with an applied bias voltage across the junction drives the system into the anomalous Floquet chiral topological superconductor hosting chiral Majorana edge modes in the quasienergy spectrum, with the bulk Floquet bands carrying zero Chern numbers. The bias voltage acts as a tuning parameter enabling novel dynamical topological quantum phase transitions driving the system into a myriad of exotic Majorana-carrying Floquet topological superconducting phases. Periodically-driven or Floquet systems can realize anomalous topological phenomena that do not exist in any equilibrium states of matter, whose classification and characterization require new theoretical ideas that are beyond the well-established paradigm of static topological phases. In this work, we provide a general framework to understand anomalous Floquet higher-order topological insulators (AFHOTIs), the classification of which has remained a challenging open question. In two dimensions (2D), such AFHOTIs are defined by their robust, symmetry-protected corner modes pinned at special quasienergies, even though all their Floquet bands feature trivial band topology. The corner-mode physics of an AFHOTI is found to be generically indicated by 3D Dirac/Weyl-like topological singularities living in the phase spectrum of the bulk time-evolution operator. Physically, such a phase-band singularity is essentially a "footprint" of the topological quantum criticality, which separates an AFHOTI from a trivial phase adiabatically connected to a static limit. Strikingly, these singularities feature unconventional dispersion relations that cannot be achieved on any static lattice in 3D, which, nevertheless, resemble the surface physics of 4D topological crystalline insulators. We establish the above higher-order bulk-boundary correspondence through a dimensional reduction technique, which also allows for a systematic classification of 2D AFHOTIs protected by point group symmetries. We demonstrate applications of our theory to two concrete, experimentally feasible models of AFHOTIs protected by $C_2$ and $D_4$ symmetries, respectively. We extend the notion of fragile topology to periodically-driven systems. We demonstrate driving-induced fragile topology in two different models, namely, the Floquet honeycomb model and the Floquet $\pi$-flux square-lattice model. In both cases, we discover a rich phase diagram that includes Floquet fragile topological phases protected by crystalline rotation or mirror symmetries, Floquet Chern insulators, and trivial atomic phases, with distinct boundary features. Remarkably, the transitions between different phases can be feasibly achieved by simply tuning the driving amplitudes, which is a unique feature of driving-enabled topological phenomena. Moreover, corner-localized fractional charges are identified as a ``smoking-gun'' signal of fragile topology in our systems. Majorana zero mode is an exotic quasi-particle excitation with non-Abelian statistics in topological superconductor systems, and can serve as the cornerstone for topological quantum computation, a new type of fault-tolerant quantum computation architecture. This review paper highlights recent progress in realizing Majorana modes in iron-based high-temperature superconductors. We begin with the discussion on topological aspect of electronic band structures in iron-based superconductor compounds. Then we focus on several concrete proposals for Majorana modes, including the Majorana zero modes inside the vortex core on the surface of Fe(Te,Se), helical Majorana modes at the hinge of Fe(Te,Se), the Majorana zero modes at the corner of the Fe(Te,Se)/FeTe heterostructure or the monolayer Fe(Te,Se) under an in-plane magnetic field. We propose a minimal lattice model for two-dimensional class DIII superconductors with $C_2$-protected higher-order topology. While this class of superconductors cannot be topologically characterized by symmetry eigenvalues at high symmetry momenta, we propose a simple Wannier-orbital-based real-space diagnosis to unambiguously capture the corresponding higher-order topology. We further identify and characterize a variety of conventional topological phases in our minimal model, including a weak topological superconductor and a nodal topological superconductor with chiral-symmetry protection. The disorder effect is also systematically studied to demonstrate the robustness of higher-order bulk-boundary correspondence. We propose a general theoretical framework for both constructing and diagnosing inversion-protected higher-order topological superconductors using Kitaev building blocks, a higher-dimensional generalization of Kitaev's one-dimensional Majorana model. For a given crystalline symmetry, the Kitaev building blocks serve as a complete basis to construct all possible Kitaev superconductors that satisfy the symmetry requirements. We derive a simple yet powerful Majorana counting rule that can unambiguously diagnose the existence of higher-order topology for all Kitaev superconductors. We expect this real-space diagnosis to work for general two-dimensional higher-order topological superconductors within this symmetry class. As proof of concept, we have identified two inequivalent stacking strategies using the Kitaev building blocks, based on which we have constructed minimal tight-binding models with symmetry-protecetd Majorana corner modes. Moreover, we have successfully applied our diagnosis to comprehend the Majorana corner physcis in a superconductor model with a fragile Wannier obstruction, confirming the validity of our theory beyond the Kitaev limit. We introduce the topological mirror excitonic insulator as a new type of interacting topological crystalline phase in one dimension. Its mirror-symmetry-protected topological properties are driven by exciton physics, and it manifests in the quantized bulk polarization and half-charge modes on the boundary. And the bosonization analysis is performed to demonstrate its robustness against strong correlation effects in one dimension. Besides, we also show that Rashba nanowires and Dirac semimetal nanowires could provide ideal experimental platforms to realize this new topological mirror excitonic insulating state. We propose MnBi$_{2n}$Te$_{3n+1}$ as a magnetically tunable platform for realizing various symmetry-protected higher-order topology. Its canted antiferromagnetic phase can host exotic topological surface states with a M\"obius twist that are protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry. Moreover, opposite surfaces hosting M\"obius fermions are connected by one-dimensional chiral hinge modes, which offers the first material candidate of a higher-order topological M\"obius insulator. We uncover a general mechanism to feasibly induce this exotic physics by applying a small in-plane magnetic field to the antiferromagnetic topological insulating phase of MnBi$_{2n}$Te$_{3n+1}$, as well as other proposed axion insulators. For other magnetic configurations, two classes of inversion-protected higher-order topological phases are ubiquitous in this system, which both manifest gapped surfaces and gapless chiral hinge modes. We systematically discuss their classification, microscopic mechanisms, and experimental signatures. We introduce higher-order topological Dirac superconductor (HOTDSC) as a new gapless topological phase of matter in three dimensions, which extends the notion of Dirac phase to a higher-order topological version. Topologically distinct from the traditional topological superconductors and known Dirac superconductors, a HOTDSC features helical Majorana hinge modes between adjacent surfaces, which are direct consequences of the symmetry-protected higher-order band topology manifesting in the system. Specifically, we show that rotational, spatial inversion, and time-reversal symmetries together protect the coexistence of bulk Dirac nodes and hinge Majorana modes in a seamless way. We define a set of topological indices that fully characterizes the HOTDSC. We further show that a practical way to realize the HOTDSC phase is to introduce unconventional odd-parity pairing to a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal while preserving the necessary symmetries. As a concrete demonstration of our idea, we construct a corresponding minimal lattice model for HOTDSC obeying the symmetry constraints. Our model exhibits the expected topological invariants in the bulk and the defining spectroscopic features on an open geometry, as we explicitly verify both analytically and numerically. Remarkably, the HOTDSC phase offers an example of a higher-order topological quantum critical point, which enables realizations of various higher-order topological phases under different symmetry-breaking patterns. In particular, by breaking the inversion symmetry of a HOTDSC, we arrive at a higher-order Weyl superconductor, which is yet another new gapless topological state that exhibits hybrid higher-order topology., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

We introduce a theoretical framework for the new concept of three-dimensional (3D) twistronics by developing a generalized Bloch band theory for 3D layered systems with a constant twist angle $\theta$ between successive layers. Our theory employs a nonsymmorphic symmetry that enables a precise definition of an effective out-of-plane crystal momentum, and also captures the in-plane moir\'e pattern formed between neighboring twisted layers. To demonstrate the novel topological physics that can be achieved through 3D twistronics, we present two examples. In the first example of chiral twisted graphite, Weyl nodes arise because of inversion-symmetry breaking, with $\theta$-tuned transitions between type-I and type-II Weyl fermions, as well as magic angles at which the in-plane velocity vanishes. In the second example of twisted Weyl semimetal, the twist in the lattice structure induces a chiral gauge field $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{A}}$ that has a vortex-antivortex lattice configuration. Line modes bound to the vortex cores of the $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{A}}$ field give rise to 3D Weyl physics in the moir\'e scale. We show theoretically that a heterostructure of monolayer FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ - a superconducting quantum spin Hall material - with a monolayer of FeTe - a bicollinear antiferromagnet - realizes a higher order topological superconductor phase characterized by emergent Majorana zero modes pinned to the sample corners. We provide a minimal effective model for this system, analyze the origin of higher order topology, and fully characterize the topological phase diagram. Despite the conventional s-wave pairing, we find rather surprising emergence of a novel topological nodal superconductor in the phase diagram. Featured by edge-dependent Majorana flat bands, the topological nodal phase is protected by an antiferromagnetic chiral symmetry. We also discuss the experimental feasibility, the estimation of realistic model parameters, and the robustness of the Majorana corner modes against magnetic disorder. Monolayer WTe$_2$, a centrosymmetric transition metal dichacogenide, has recently been established as a quantum spin Hall insulator and found superconducting upon gating. Here we study the pairing symmetry and topological nature of superconducting WTe$_2$ with a microscopic model at mean-field level. Surprisingly, we find that the spin-triplet phases in our phase diagram all host Majorana modes localized on two opposite corners. Even when the conventional pairing is favored, we find that an intermediate in-plane magnetic field exceeding the Pauli limit stabilizes an unconventional equal-spin pairing aligning with the field, which also hosts Majorana corner modes. Motivated by our findings, we obtain a recipe for two-dimensional superconductors featuring "higher-order topology" from the boundary perspective: Generally a superconducting inversion-symmetric quantum spin Hall material whose normal-state Fermi surface is away from high-symmetry points, such as gated monolayer WTe$_2$, hosts Majorana corner modes if the superconductivity is parity-odd. We further point out that this higher-order phase is an inversion-protected topological crystalline superconductor and study the bulk-boundary correspondence. Finally, we discuss possible experiments for probing the Majorana corner modes. Our findings suggest superconducting monolayer WTe$_2$ is a playground for higher-order topological superconductivity, and possibly the first material realization for inversion-protected Majorana corner modes without utilizing proximity effect., Comment: 5+8 pages, 4+5 figures

Motivated by recent experiments on FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$, we construct an explicit minimal model of an iron-based superconductor with band inversion at the $Z$ point and non-topological bulk $s_{\pm}$ pairing. While there has been considerable interest in Majorana zero modes localized at vortices in such systems, we find that our model - without any vortices - intrinsically supports 1D helical Majorana modes localized at the hinges between (001) and (100) or (010) surfaces, suggesting that this is a viable platform for observing "higher-order" topological superconductivity. We provide a general theory for these hinge modes and discuss their stability and experimental manifestation. Developing alternative paradigms of electronics beyond silicon technology requires the exploration of fundamentally new physical mechanisms, such as the valley specific phenomena in hexagonal two-dimensional materials. We realize ballistic valley Hall kink states in bilayer graphene and demonstrate gate-controlled current transmission in a four-kink router device. The operations of a waveguide, a valve and a tunable electron beam splitter are demonstrated. The valley valve exploits the valley-momentum locking of the kink states and reaches an on/off ratio of 8 at zero magnetic field. A magnetic field enables a full-ranged tunable coherent beam splitter. These results pave the path to building a scalable, coherent quantum transportation network based on the kink states.

One of the cornerstones for topological quantum computations is the Majorana zero mode, which has been intensively searched in fractional quantum Hall systems and topological superconductors. Several recent works suggest that such an exotic mode can also exist in a one-dimensional (1D) interacting double-wire setup even without long-range superconductivity. A notable instability in these proposals comes from interchannel single-particle tunneling that spoils the topological ground state degeneracy. Here we show that a 1D Dirac semimetal (DSM) nanowire is an ideal number-conserving platform to realize such Majorana physics. By inserting magnetic flux, a DSM nanowire is driven into a 1D crystalline-symmetry-protected semimetallic phase. Interaction enables the emergence of boundary Majorana zero modes, which is robust as a result of crystalline symmetry protection. In this work, we study the transport through a quantum point contact for bosonic helical liquid that exists at the edge of a bilayer graphene under a strong magnetic field. We identify "smoking gun" transport signatures to distinguish bosonic symmetry protected topological (BSPT) state from fermionic two-channel quantum spin Hall (QSH) state in this system. In particular, a novel charge insulator/spin conductor phase is found for BSPT state, while either charge insulator/spin insulator or charge conductor/spin conductor phase is expected for the two-channel QSH state. Consequently, a simple transport measurement will reveal the fingerprint of bosonic topological physics in bilayer graphene systems., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

We study the interaction effects on thin films of topological mirror Kondo insulators (TMKI), where the strong interaction is expected to play an important role. Our study has led to the following results: (1) We identify a rich phase diagram of non-interacting TMKI with different mirror Chern numbers in the monolayer and bilayer thin films; (2) We obtain the phase diagram with interaction and identify the regimes of interaction parameters to mimic bosonic symmetry protected topological phases with either gapless bosonic modes or spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking at the boundary; (3) For the spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking boundary, we also study various domain-wall defects between different mirror symmetry breaking order parameters at the boundary. Dirac semimetal is a class of semi-metallic phase protected by certain types of crystalline symmetries, and its low-energy effective Hamiltonian is described by Dirac equations in three dimensions (3D). Despite of various theoretical studies, theories that describe the topological nature of Dirac semimetals have not been well established. In this work, we define a topological invariant for 3D Dirac semimetals by establishing a mapping between a 3D Dirac semimetal and a topological crystalline insulator in four dimension (4D). We demonstrate this scheme by constructing a tight-binding model for 4D topological crystalline insulators that are protected by rotational symmetry. A new type of topological invariant, "rotational Chern number", is shown to characterize the topology of this system. As a consequence of the rotational Chern number, gapless Dirac points are found on the 3D surface of this 4D system. For a slab with two surfaces, we find that the corresponding low-energy effective theory of two surface states can be directly mapped to that of a 3D Dirac semimetal, suggesting that topological nature of 3D Dirac semimetals can be characterized by rotational Chern number which is defined in 4D. The low energy physics of both graphene and surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators is described by gapless Dirac fermions with linear dispersion. In this work, we predict the emergence of a "heavy" Dirac fermion in a graphene/topological insulator hetero-junction, where the linear term almost vanishes and the corresponding energy dispersion becomes highly non-linear. By combining {\it ab initio} calculations and an effective low-energy model, we show explicitly how strong hybridization between Dirac fermions in graphene and the surface states of topological insulators can reduce the Fermi velocity of Dirac fermions. Due to the negligible linear term, interaction effects will be greatly enhanced and can drive "heavy" Dirac fermion states into the half quantum Hall state with non-zero Hall conductance., Comment: 2 figures

In the quantum anomalous Hall effect, chiral edge modes are expected to conduct spin polarized current without dissipation and thus hold great promise for future electronics and spintronics with low energy consumption. However, spin polarization of chiral edge modes has never been established in experiments. In this work, we theoretically study spin polarization of chiral edge modes in the quantum anomalous Hall effect, based on both the effective model and more realistic tight-binding model constructed from the first principles calculations. We find that spin polarization can be manipulated by tuning either a local gate voltage or the Fermi energy. We also propose to extract spin information of chiral edge modes by contacting the quantum anomalous Hall insulator to a ferromagnetic (FM) lead. The establishment of spin polarization of chiral edge modes, as well as the manipulation and detection in a fully electrical manner, will pave the way to the applications of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in spintronics., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

We study the interaction effect in a three dimensional Dirac semimetal and find that two competing orders, charge-density-wave orders and nematic orders, can be induced to gap the Dirac points. Applying a magnetic field can further induce an instability towards forming these ordered phases. The charge density wave phase is similar as that of a Weyl semimetal while the nematic phase is unique for Dirac semimetals. Gapless zero modes are found in the vortex core formed by nematic order parameters, indicating the topological nature of nematic phases. Two-dimensional Dirac physics has aroused great interests in condensed matter physics ever since the discovery of graphene and topological insulators due to its importance in both fundamental physics and device applications. The ability to control the properties of Dirac cones, such as bandgap and Fermi velocity, is essential for the occurrence of various new phenomena and the development of next-generation electronic devices. Based on first-principles calculations and an analytical effective model, we propose a new Dirac system with eight Dirac cones in thin films of the (LaO)2(SbSe2)2 family of materials with an external gate voltage. The advantage of this system lies in its tunability: the existence of gapless Dirac cones, their positions, Fermi velocities and anisotropy all can be controlled by an experimentally feasible gate voltage. We identify the layer dependent spin texture induced by spin-orbit coupling as the underlying physical reason for the tunability of Dirac cones in this system. As a consequence, we show that the electrically tunable quantum anomalous Hall effect with a high Chern number can be induced by introducing magnetization into this system., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures

Gapless surface states of time reversal invariant topological insulators are protected by the anti-unitary nature of the time reversal operation. Very recently, this idea was generalized to magnetic structures, in which time reversal symmetry is explicitly broken, but there is still an anti-unitary symmetry operation combining time reversal symmetry and crystalline symmetry. These topological phases in magnetic structures are dubbed "topological magnetic crystalline insulators". In this work, we present a general theory of topological magnetic crystalline insulators in different types of magnetic crystals based on the co-representation theory of magnetic crystalline symmetry groups. We construct two concrete tight-binding models of topological magnetic crystalline insulators, the $\hat{C}_4\Theta$ model and the $\hat{\bf \tau}\Theta$ model, in which topological surface states and topological invariants are calculated explicitly. Moreover, we check different types of anti-unitary operators in magnetic systems and find that the systems with $\hat{C}_4\Theta$, $\hat{C}_6\Theta$ and $\hat{\bf \tau}\Theta$ symmetry are able to protect gapless surface states.
