We address the problem of a single impurity atom moving in a two-dimensional (2D) layer immersed in a 3D Fermi gas. Using a variational approach, we show that in this mixed-dimensional (MD) system, there is a transition between polaron and molecule ground states, similar to the case of pure 3D. Moreover, we find that the attractive polaron energy in MD is higher than that in 3D, while molecular energy in MD is lower than that in 3D, which leads to a shift of the critical interaction strength of transition. Further analysis shows that the energy difference between 3D and MD systems is attributed to the increment of the effective mass of the impurity, which is induced by the spatial constraint on the impurity. The stability of soil colloids influences soil physicochemical properties, soil development, and transfer of nutrients and contaminants to surface and ground waters. A better understanding of soil colloids stability dynamics during soil evolution is important for the evaluation of soil's capacity to retain nutrients and/or accommodate toxic contaminants. This study was aimed to determine changes in the stability of water-dispersible soil colloids that accompany mineral transformation and surface charge evolution during pedogenesis using a well characterized chronosequence derived from basalt in the humid tropical region of Hainan Island, South China. The results demonstrated that the pH-dependent colloid stability decreased significantly with tropical soil development, which we attribute to the substantial changes in clay mineral compositions and colloid surface charge properties. Clay minerals in the studied chronosequence were characterized by an increase of kaolinite, gibbsite and Fe oxides and a decrease of quartz and halloysite towards more advanced stages of weathering, which resulted in the decline of permanent negative charges in the older soils. The point of zero charge (pH PZC ) increased while ∆ pH decreased across the tropical soil chronosequence, being in good agreement with the observed lower colloid stability in aged soils dominated by kaolinitic minerals. Our study of colloid stability at long-term pedogenic time scale suggests young tropical soils (< 180 ka) with high surface charge are subjected to higher risk of clay movement and colloid-facilitated nutrients and contaminants transport. Careful management practices are thus required to avoid colloids dispersion and transport in young tropical soils either by reducing the frequency/intensity of pore-water flow or by liming to counter the high permanent negative charges. Abstract: The Landauer transport theory is used to study the electron transmission of wedge-shaped graphene nanoconstrictions (WGNCs) under transverse strain. It is found that WGNCs have a transport gap decreasingly dependent on the strain. Further analysis shows that the strain dependence of the transport gap origins from the sensitiveness of confined states to strain. And on this basis, an analytical formula of the transport gap as a function of transverse strain is obtained confirming the numerical results. Simple Summary: Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi are among the most common diarrhea-causing pathogens in humans and livestock. This was the first study to systematically and molecularly detect the prevalence of three intestinal protozoa in cattle in Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China. Our findings indicate that a variety of species/genotypes are prevalent in cattle in Heilongjiang Province and that some of them are zoonotic, indicating a risk of zoonotic disease transmission in endemic areas. This study helps to understand the epidemiology of Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi in cattle in Heilongjiang Province. Crytosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi are important diarrheal pathogens with a global distribution that threatens the health of humans and animals. Despite cattle being potential transmission hosts of these protozoans, the associated risks to public health have been neglected. In the present study, a total of 1155 cattle fecal samples were collected from 13 administrative regions of Heilongjiang Province. The prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp., G. duodenalis, and E. bieneusi were 5.5% (64/1155; 95% CI: 4.2–6.9), 3.8% (44/1155; 95% CI: 2.7–4.9), and 6.5% (75/1155; 95% CI: 5.1–7.9), respectively. Among these positive fecal samples, five Cryptosporidium species (C. andersoni, C. bovis, C. ryanae, C. parvum, and C. occultus), two G. duodenalis assemblages (E and A), and eight E. bieneusi genotypes (BEB4, BEB6, BEB8, J, I, CHS7, CHS8, and COS-I) were identified. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all eight genotypes of E. bieneusi identified in the present study belonged to group 2. It is worth noting that some species/genotypes of these intestinal protozoans are zoonotic, suggesting a risk of zoonotic disease transmission in endemic areas. Tuning the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in graphene is highly desired for its application in spintronics. In this paper, we calculated the band gap induced by SOC in graphene under uniaxial strain from a tight-binding model, and found that the band gap has a monotonic increasing dependence on the strain in the range of -20% to 15%. Our results suggest that strain can be used as a reversible and controllable way to tune the SOC in graphene. Based on the ϕ-mapping theory, we obtain an exact Bogomol'nyi self-dual equation with a topological term, which is ignored in traditional self-dual equation, in the fractional quantum Hall system. It is revealed that there exist self-dual vortices in the system. We investigate the inner topological structure of the self-dual vortices and show that the topological charges of the vortices are quantized by Hopf indices and Brouwer degrees. Furthermore, we study the branch processes in detail. Recently, Pal and Skar in Ref. 33 proposed a mechanism to arise the warped braneworld models from bulk tachyon matter, which are endowed with a thin brane and a thick brane. In this framework, we investigate localization of fermionic fields on these branes. As in the 1/2-spin case, the field can be localized on both the thin and thick branes with inclusion of scalar background. Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) has emerged as a critical regulator of many cellular pathways in tumors due to its unique structure basis and abundant substrate types. Over the past few decades, the role played by HDAC6 inhibitors as anticancer agents has sparked great interest of biochemists worldwide. However, they were less reported for gastric cancer therapy. In this paper, with the help of bioisosteric replacement, in-house library screening, and lead optimization strategies, we designed, synthesized and verified a series of 1,3-diaryl-1,2,4-triazole-capped HDAC6 inhibitors with promising anti-gastric cancer activities. Amongst, compound 9r displayed the best inhibitory activity towards HDAC6 (IC 50 = 30.6 nM), with 128-fold selectivity over HDAC1. Further BLI and CETSA assay proved the high affinity of 9r to HDAC6. In addition, 9r could dose-dependently upregulate the levels of acetylated α-tubulin, without significant effect on acetylated histone H3 in MGC803 cells. Besides, 9r exhibited potent antiproliferative effect on MGC803 cells, and promoted apoptosis and suppressed the metastasis without obvious toxicity, suggesting 9r would serve as a potential lead compound for the development of novel therapeutic agents of gastric cancer. • A pharmacophore fusion strategy was adopted to optimizenatural product gramin. • Terminal alkyne was vital for enhancing the antiproliferative activity. • 16h could induce cell apoptosis and inhibit metastasis ability of MGC803 cells. Gramine is a natural indole alkaloid with a wide range of biological activities, but its anti-gastric cancer activity is poor. Herein, a pharmacophore fusion strategy was adopted to design and synthesize a new series of indole-azole hybrids on the structural basis of gramine. Based on our previous studies, different nitrogen-containing five-membered heterocyclic rings and terminal alkyne group were introduced into the indole-based scaffold to investigate their effect on improving the anti-gastric cancer activity of gramine derivatives. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies highlighted the role played by terminal alkyne in enhancing the inhibitory effect, and compound 16h displayed the best antiproliferative activity against gastric cancer MGC803 cells with IC 50 value of 3.74 μM. Further investigations displayed compound 16h could induce mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, and caused cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase. In this paper, a series of thiosemicarbazone derivatives containing different aromatic heterocyclic groups were synthesized and the tridentate donor system of the lead compound was optimized. Most of the target compounds showed improved antiproliferative activity against MGC803 cells. SAR studies revealed that compound 5d displayed significant advantages in inhibition effect with an IC 50 value of 0.031 μM, and better selectivity between cancer and normal cells than 3-AP and DpC (about 15- and 5-fold improved respectively). Besides, compound 5d showed selective antiproliferative activity in not only other cancer cells but also different gastric cancer cell lines. In-depth mechanism studies showed that compound 5d could induce mitochondria-related apoptosis which might be related to the elevation of intracellular ROS level, and cause cell cycle arrest at S phase. Moreover, 5d could evidently suppress the cell migration and invasion by blocking the EMT (epithelial–mesenchymal transition) process. Consequently, our studies provided a lead optimization strategy of thiosemicarbazone derivatives which would contribute to discover high-efficiency and low-toxicity agents for the treatment of gastric cancer. We present a quantitative evaluation study of the thermal effect responsible for laser-triggered collective magnetization dynamics in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As film without applying the external magnetic field by employing the pump-probe magneto-optical spectroscopy. Our observation shows that the effect of ultrafast laser heating on the manipulation of magnetization precession in a (Ga,Mn)As film is not exactly equivalent to that of the ambient temperature increase, and needs to be carefully analyzed by considering the temperature-dependent specific heat of (Ga,Mn)As. The transient modulation of magnetocrystalline anisotropy via ultrafast laser heating at low temperature exhibits a higher sensitivity than that at high temperature. The quantitative analysis of the laser-heating manipulated magnetization precession presented in this work is helpful for evaluating the laser-triggered ultrafast magnetization dynamics in (Ga,Mn)As films. Abstract: The dynamics of an entangled atomic system, partially interacting with entangled cavity fields and characterizing an entanglement swapping, has been studied through their von Neumann entropies. The aforementioned interaction is implemented via a two-photon process, given by either the full microscopical Hamiltonian approach or the two-photon Jaynes–Cummings model. Numerical simulations furnish the explicit expressions for each sub-system entropy, which allow us to estimate the multiperiodicity in the evolution of the entangled atom–field system. Abstract: Based on the ϕ-mapping theory, we derive a new rigorous equation describing the distribution of the magnetic field for vortices in a two-gap superconductor, of which the so-called modified London equation is just a special case in a one-flavor limit. We explicitly investigate the London penetration depth, the Meissner and mixed states and Josephson effect. A magnetic flux quantization condition for vortices in a two-gap superconductor is also derived, from which it follows that in a two-gap superconductor there exist vortices which carry an arbitrary fraction of magnetic flux quantum. Background: After the scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV infected people, increasing numbers of patients have pretreatment drug resistance (PDR). In this study, the prevalence of PDR was evaluated in adults initiating antiretroviral therapy in China. Methods: Blood samples were obtained from 1943 patients who initiated antiretroviral therapy (ART) in 2017 from 13 provinces or cities in China. Pol sequences were used to analyze drug resistance and construct transmission networks. Logistic regression model was used to estimate the potential factors associated with PDR. Results: In total, 1711 eligible patients (76.0% male; 87.8% aged ≥ 25 years) were included, of which 117 (6.8%) had PDR. The highest rates of PDR were 12.2% in Liangshan Prefecture of Sichuan and 9.3 and 8.9% in Dehong and Lincang Prefecture of Yunnan. A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that PDR was significantly higher among intravenous drug users (adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) = 2.64, 95% CI: 1.57–4.44) and individuals from Liangshan, Dehong, and Lincang (aOR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.26–3.30). In total, 754 sequences were used to generate 164 transmission networks. Five transmission networks had two or three sequences containing the same mutations, two networks contained subjects from Liangshan, and one network contained subjects from Dehong. Conclusions: Overall, the PDR prevalence was moderate, with a particularly high prevalence in areas with severe HIV epidemics. Abstract To explore anti-gastric cancer agents with high efficacy and selectivity, we report the design, synthesis and optimization of a novel series of 3-(2,6,9-trisubstituted-9H-purine)-8-chalcone derivatives starting from the compound PCA-15 reported by us previously. Most of the target compounds demonstrated significant antiproliferative effects on MGC803 cancer cell line, and more potent than the positive control (PCA-15 and 5-Fu). Among them, compound 6o was identified to be the most active compound against MGC803 cell line with an IC 50 value of 0.84 μM. Additionally, high selectivity was also observed between cancer and normal cells (23.35 μM against GES-1). Further mechanism studies confirmed that compound 6o could inhibit colony formation and migration, induce the apoptosis of MGC803 cells through both the mitochondrial-mediated intrinsic pathway and death receptor-mediated extrinsic pathway, which were evidenced by the up-regulation of Bax, cleaved-caspase 9/3/8, cleaved PARP and down-regulation of Bcl-2. Our systematic studies implied a new scaffold targeting gastric cancer cells for further development of small-molecule compounds with improved potency and selectivity. A new series of 6-chloro-2-(propylthio)-8,9-dihydro-7H-purine-8-caboxamide derivatives were designed, synthesized, and further evaluated for their antiproliferative activities on four human cancer cell lines (A549, MGC803, PC-3 and TE-1). The structure-activity relationships (SARs) studies were conducted through the variation in the two regions, which including position 8 and 9, of purine core. One of the compounds, 8 , containing a terminal piperazine appendage with a carboxamide moiety at position 8 and phenyl group at position 9 of 6-chloro-8,9-dihydro-7H-purine core, showed the most potent antiproliferative activity and good selectivity between cancer and normal cells (IC 50 values of 2.80 μM against A549 and 303.03 μM against GES-1, respectively). In addition, compound 8 could inhibit the colony formation and migration of A549 cells in a concentration-dependent manner, as well as induce the apoptosis possibly through the intrinsic pathway. Polygala tenuifolia Willd. is an important protected species used in traditional Chinese medicine. In the present study, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were employed to characterize the genetic diversity in wild and cultivated P. tenuifolia populations. Twelve primer combinations of AFLP produced 310 unambiguous and repetitious bands. Among these bands, 261 (84.2%) were polymorphic. The genetic diversity was high at the species level: percentage of polymorphic loci (PPL) = 84.2%, Nei's gene diversity ( h ) = 0.3296 and Shannon's information index ( I ) = 0.4822. Between the two populations, the genetic differentiation of 0.1250 was low and the gene flow was relatively high, at 3.4989. The wild population (PPL = 81.9%, h = 0.3154, I = 0.4635) showed a higher genetic diversity level than the cultivated population (PPL = 63.9%, h = 0.2507, I = 0.3688). The results suggest that the major factors threatening the persistence of P. tenuifolia resources are ecological and human factors rather than genetic. These results will assist with the design of conservation and management programs, such as in natural habitat conservation, setting the excavation time interval for resource regeneration and the substitution of cultivated for wild plants. ABCB1-mediated multidrug resistance (MDR) is a principal obstacle for successful cancer chemotherapy. A series of pyrimidine-based hybrid molecules containing 1,2,3-triazole moiety were evaluated for their reversal activities against MDR. The majority of target compounds displayed moderate to great reversal potency. Among these compounds, compound 25 displayed the most potent reversal activity, about 7-fold more potent than Verapamil (VRP). Further mechanism studies revealed that compound 25 could obviously reverse paclitaxel (PTX) resistance in SW620/AD300 cells by increasing accumulation and extending maintenance of PTX. Our findings indicate that the 1,2,3-triazole-pyrimidine-based derivatives may serve as an interesting lead for the development of new potent and efficacious ABCB1-dependent MDR modulators. A series of thiazolo[5,4- d ]pyrimidine derivatives were designed through the atom replacement strategy based on biologically validated scaffolds and then evaluated for their antiproliferative activities on cancer cell lines. The structure-activity relationship studies were conducted, leading to the identification of compound 22 , which exhibited good antiproliferative activity against HGC-27 with an IC 50 value of 1.22 μM and low toxicity against GES-1 cells. Mechanistic studies showed that compound 22 inhibited the colony formation and migration of HGC-27 as well as induced apoptosis. The western blot experiments proved that compound 22 up-regulated expression of Bax, down-regulated expression levels of Bcl-2 and cleaved caspased-3/9. These findings indicate that compound 22 may serve as a template for designing new agents for the treatment of human gastric cancers. Histone lysine specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) plays an important role in epigenetic modifications, and aberrant expression of LSD1 predicts tumor progression and poor prognosis in human esophageal cancers. In this study, a series of LSD1 inhibitors were synthesized and proved to be highly potent against human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Our data showed that these LSD1 inhibitors selectively suppressed the viability of esophageal cancer cell line (EC-109) bearing overexpressed LSD1. Among these, compound LPE-1 (LSD1 IC 50 = 0.336 ± 0.003 μM) significantly suppressed proliferation, induced apoptosis, arrested cell cycle of EC109 cells at G2/M phase, and caused changes of the associated protein markers correspondingly. We also found that compound LPE-1 potently inhibited the migration and invasion of EC-109 cells. Docking studies showed that the cyano group formed hydrogen bonds with Val811 and Thr810. Additionally, the thiophene moiety formed arene-H interaction with Trp761 residue. In vivo studies showed that compound LPE-1 inhibited tumor growth of xenograft models bearing EC-109 without obvious toxicity. Collectively, our findings indicate that LSD1 may be a potential therapeutic target in ESCC, and compound LPE-1 could serve as a lead compound for further development for anti-ESCC drug discovery. Candida tropicalis is a major non- albicans species that causes invasive candidiasis. CGA-N12, an anti- Candida peptide found by our group, disrupted cell wall architecture by inhibiting the activity of the protein killer-resistant 9 (KRE9), a β-1,6-glucan synthase specific to Candida spp. and plants. Herein, a set of CGA-N12 analogues were rationally designed based on the interaction networks between CGA-N12 and C. tropicalis KRE9 (CtKRE9). Seven CGA-N12 analogues with significantly improved antifungal activity against C. tropicalis were screened by reducing the docking energy of CGA-N12 and CtKRE9 and increasing the number of positive charges on CGA-N12 based on a stable three-dimensional model of CtKRE9. CGA-N12 and its analogues exhibited antifungal activity against C. tropicalis and its persist cells; they also inhibited biofilm formation and eradicated preformed biofilms. Compared with fluconazole, they displayed higher activities against the growth of persister cells and more effective preformed biofilm eradication. Among them, CGA-N12-0801, CGA-N12-0902 and CGA-N12-1002 displayed much higher activity and anti-proteinase digestion stability than CGA-N12. Specifically, CGA-N12-0801 was the optimal analogue, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 3.46 μg/mL and a therapeutic index of 158.07. The results of electronic microscopy observations and KRE9 activity inhibition assays showed that CGA-N12 and its analogues killed C. tropicalis by disrupting the architecture of the cell wall and the integrity of the cell membrane. In conclusion, for the first time, we provide a simple and reliable method for the rational design of antimicrobial peptides and ideal candidates for treating Candida infections that not effectively eliminated by azole drugs. A series of [1,2,3]triazolo[4,5- d ]pyrimidine derivatives bearing a hydrazone moiety were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against several cancer cell lines of different origins by MTT assay. Most of the synthesized compounds demonstrated moderate to good activity against the cancer cell lines selected. Especially, compound 43 showed the most potent antiproliferative activity as well as good selectivity between cancer and normal cells (IC 50 values of 0.85 μM against MGC-803 and 56.17 μM against GES-1). In addition, compound 43 evidently inhibited the colony formation of MGC-803 cells at 0.8 μM. Further mechanism studies revealed that compound 43 could induce apoptosis of MGC-803 cells probably through the mitochondrial pathway accompanied with decrease of the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), activations of caspase-9/3, up-regulation of the expression of Bax, Bak and PUMA, as well as down-regulation of that of Bcl-2 and Mcl-1. To obtain better evenness, this paper presented an improved algorithm of producing the chaotic pseudorandom sequence based on the analysis of nonlinear dynamic characteristics statistical characteristics of the one-dimensional Logistic map. The arcsine and arccosine transformation were used to enhance the randomness of pseudorandom sequence produced by the one-dimensional Logistic map. The qualitative analysis and the numerical calculation results show that the iterative times has little influence on the statistical characteristics of the improved Logistic map sequence and the better evenness can be obtained with regard to the previous works. [Display omitted] • The specific crystallography structure, compositions and functions of HDAC6 were reviewed. • The relation of HDAC6 with tumor immune diseases was summarized. • HDAC6 inhibitors in combination with antitumor immunomodulatory agents were discussed. Tumor immunotherapy is currently subject of intense scientific and clinical developments. In previous decade, therapists used natural immune system from the human body to treat several diseases. Although tumor immune disease is a big challenge, combinatorial therapeutic strategy has been succeeded to show the clinical significance. In this context, we discuss the HDAC6 and tumor immune diseases relationship. Also, we summarized the current state of knowledge that based on the combination treatments of the HDAC6 inhibitors (HDAC6is) with antitumor immunomodulatory agents. We observed that, the combination therapies slow down the tumor immune diseases by blocking the aggresome and proteasome pathway. The combination therapy was able to reduce M2 macrophage and increasing PD-L1 blockade sensitivity. Most importantly, multiple combinations of HDAC6is with other agents may consider as potential strategies to treat tumor immune diseases, by reducing the side effects and improve efficacy for the future clinical development. To discover novel anticancer agents with potent and low toxicity, we designed and synthesized a range of new thiosemicarbazone-indole analogues based on lead compound 4 we reported previously. Most compounds displayed moderate to high anticancer activities against five tested tumor cells (PC3, EC109, DU-145, MGC803, MCF-7). Specifically, the represented compound 16f possessed strong antiproliferative potency and high selectivity toward PC3 cells with the IC 50 value of 0.054 μM, compared with normal WPMY-1 cells with the IC 50 value of 19.470 μM. Preliminary mechanism research indicated that compound 16f could significantly suppress prostate cancer cells (PC3, DU-145) growth and colony formation in a dose-dependent manner. Besides, derivative 16f induced G1/S cycle arrest and apoptosis, which may be related to ROS accumulation due to the activation of MAPK signaling pathway. Furthermore, molecule 16f could effectively inhibit tumor growth through a xenograft model bearing PC3 cells and had no evident toxicity in vivo. Overall, based on the biological activity evaluation, analogue 16f can be viewed as a potential lead compound for further development of novel anti-prostate cancer drug. Lysine specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) plays an essential role in maintaining a balanced methylation status at histone tails. Overexpression of LSD1 has been involved in the development of a variety of human diseases, including cancers. Herein, on the basis of our previously developed LSD1 inhibitors, two series of new [1,2,3]triazolo[4,5- d ]pyrimidine derivatives incorporating (thio)urea moiety were designed and evaluated for their LSD1 inhibitory abilities, leading to a novel chemical class of LSD1 inhibitors. Among them, compound 31 was found to moderately inhibit LSD1 activity, as well as increase the expression of H3K4me2 at the cellular level. This compound also showed good selectivity against MAO-A/-B, and a panel of kinases such as CDK and BTK. Besides, the MTT assay suggested that the selected compounds could inhibit the proliferation of LSD1-overexpressed cancer cells. Although this class of compounds only showed moderate anti-LSD1 activity in the micromolar range, this work presents a novel chemotype of LSD1 inhibitors with good enzyme selectivity as well as cellular LSD1 inhibitory activity, and could provide a useful template for the development of more potent LSD1 inhibitors for cancer treatment. We quantitatively investigate the third-order optical nonlinear response of Co-doped ZnO thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering using the Z-scan method. The two-photon absorption and optical Kerr effect are revealed to contribute to the third-order nonlinear response of the Co-doped ZnO films. The nonlinear absorption coefficient β is determined to be approximately 8.8 × 10−5 cm/W and the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) is 2.93 × 10−6 esu. The defect-associated energy levels within the band gap are suggested to be responsible for the enhanced nonlinear response observed in Co-doped ZnO films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
