The primary goal of continual learning (CL) task in medical image segmentation field is to solve the "catastrophic forgetting" problem, where the model totally forgets previously learned features when it is extended to new categories (class-level) or tasks (task-level). Due to the privacy protection, the historical data labels are inaccessible. Prevalent continual learning methods primarily focus on generating pseudo-labels for old datasets to force the model to memorize the learned features. However, the incorrect pseudo-labels may corrupt the learned feature and lead to a new problem that the better the model is trained on the old task, the poorer the model performs on the new tasks. To avoid this problem, we propose a network by introducing the data-specific Mixture of Experts (MoE) structure to handle the new tasks or categories, ensuring that the network parameters of previous tasks are unaffected or only minimally impacted. To further overcome the tremendous memory costs caused by introducing additional structures, we propose a Low-Rank strategy which significantly reduces memory cost. We validate our method on both class-level and task-level continual learning challenges. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets show our model outperforms all other methods.

Scribble-based weakly-supervised semantic segmentation using sparse scribble supervision is gaining traction as it reduces annotation costs when compared to fully annotated alternatives. Existing methods primarily generate pseudo-labels by diffusing labeled pixels to unlabeled ones with local cues for supervision. However, this diffusion process fails to exploit global semantics and class-specific cues, which are important for semantic segmentation. In this study, we propose a class-driven scribble promotion network, which utilizes both scribble annotations and pseudo-labels informed by image-level classes and global semantics for supervision. Directly adopting pseudo-labels might misguide the segmentation model, thus we design a localization rectification module to correct foreground representations in the feature space. To further combine the advantages of both supervisions, we also introduce a distance entropy loss for uncertainty reduction, which adapts per-pixel confidence weights according to the reliable region determined by the scribble and pseudo-label's boundary. Experiments on the ScribbleSup dataset with different qualities of scribble annotations outperform all the previous methods, demonstrating the superiority and robustness of our method.The code is available at https://github.com/Zxl19990529/Class-driven-Scribble-Promotion-Network.

Structural extraction of events within discourse is critical since it avails a deeper understanding of communication patterns and behavior trends. Event argument extraction (EAE), at the core of event-centric understanding, is the task of identifying role-specific text spans (i.e., arguments) for a given event. Document-level EAE (DocEAE) focuses on arguments that are scattered across an entire document. In this work, we explore the capabilities of open source Large Language Models (LLMs), i.e., Flan-UL2, for the DocEAE task. To this end, we propose ULTRA, a hierarchical framework that extracts event arguments more cost-effectively -- the method needs as few as 50 annotations and doesn't require hitting costly API endpoints. Further, it alleviates the positional bias issue intrinsic to LLMs. ULTRA first sequentially reads text chunks of a document to generate a candidate argument set, upon which ULTRA learns to drop non-pertinent candidates through self-refinement. We further introduce LEAFER to address the challenge LLMs face in locating the exact boundary of an argument span. ULTRA outperforms strong baselines, which include strong supervised models and ChatGPT, by 9.8% when evaluated by the exact match (EM) metric.

News media often strive to minimize explicit moral language in news articles, yet most articles are dense with moral values as expressed through the reported events themselves. However, values that are reflected in the intricate dynamics among participating entities and moral events are far more challenging for most NLP systems to detect, including LLMs. To study this phenomenon, we annotate a new dataset, MORAL EVENTS, consisting of 5,494 structured event annotations on 474 news articles by diverse US media across the political spectrum. We further propose MOKA, a moral event extraction framework with MOral Knowledge Augmentation, which leverages knowledge derived from moral words and moral scenarios to produce structural representations of morality-bearing events. Experiments show that MOKA outperforms competitive baselines across three moral event understanding tasks. Further analysis shows even ostensibly nonpartisan media engage in the selective reporting of moral events. Public opinion is shaped by the information news media provide, and that information in turn may be shaped by the ideological preferences of media outlets. But while much attention has been devoted to media bias via overt ideological language or topic selection, a more unobtrusive way in which the media shape opinion is via the strategic inclusion or omission of partisan events that may support one side or the other. We develop a latent variable-based framework to predict the ideology of news articles by comparing multiple articles on the same story and identifying partisan events whose inclusion or omission reveals ideology. Our experiments first validate the existence of partisan event selection, and then show that article alignment and cross-document comparison detect partisan events and article ideology better than competitive baselines. Our results reveal the high-level form of media bias, which is present even among mainstream media with strong norms of objectivity and nonpartisanship. News media is expected to uphold unbiased reporting. Yet they may still affect public opinion by selectively including or omitting events that support or contradict their ideological positions. Prior work in NLP has only studied media bias via linguistic style and word usage. In this paper, we study to which degree media balances news reporting and affects consumers through event inclusion or omission. We first introduce the task of detecting both partisan and counter-partisan events: events that support or oppose the author's political ideology. To conduct our study, we annotate a high-quality dataset, PAC, containing 8,511 (counter-)partisan event annotations in 304 news articles from ideologically diverse media outlets. We benchmark PAC to highlight the challenges of this task. Our findings highlight both the ways in which the news subtly shapes opinion and the need for large language models that better understand events within a broader context. A deep autoencoder (DAE)-based structure for endto-end communication over the two-user Z-interference channel (ZIC) with finite-alphabet inputs is designed in this paper. The proposed structure jointly optimizes the two encoder/decoder pairs and generates interference-aware constellations that dynamically adapt their shape based on interference intensity to minimize the bit error rate (BER). An in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) power allocation layer is introduced in the DAE to guarantee an average power constraint and enable the architecture to generate constellations with nonuniform shapes. This brings further gain compared to standard uniform constellations such as quadrature amplitude modulation. The proposed structure is then extended to work with imperfect channel state information (CSI). The CSI imperfection due to both the estimation and quantization errors are examined. The performance of the DAEZIC is compared with two baseline methods, i.e., standard and rotated constellations. The proposed structure significantly enhances the performance of the ZIC both for the perfect and imperfect CSI. Simulation results show that the improvement is achieved in all interference regimes (weak, moderate, and strong) and consistently increases with the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). For example, more than an order of magnitude BER reduction is obtained with respect to the most competitive conventional method at weak interference when SNR>15dB and two bits per symbol are transmitted. Medical image segmentation is a fundamental yet challenging task due to the arduous process of acquiring large volumes of high-quality labeled data from experts. Contrastive learning offers a promising but still problematic solution to this dilemma. Because existing medical contrastive learning strategies focus on extracting image-level representation, which ignores abundant multi-level representations. And they underutilize the decoder either by random initialization or separate pre-training from the encoder, thereby neglecting the potential collaboration between the encoder and decoder. To address these issues, we propose a novel multi-level asymmetric contrastive learning framework named MACL for volumetric medical image segmentation pre-training. Specifically, we design an asymmetric contrastive learning structure to pre-train encoder and decoder simultaneously to provide better initialization for segmentation models. Moreover, we develop a multi-level contrastive learning strategy that integrates correspondences across feature-level, image-level, and pixel-level representations to ensure the encoder and decoder capture comprehensive details from representations of varying scales and granularities during the pre-training phase. Finally, experiments on 12 volumetric medical image datasets indicate our MACL framework outperforms existing 11 contrastive learning strategies. {\itshape i.e.} Our MACL achieves a superior performance with more precise predictions from visualization figures and 2.28\%, 1.32\%, 1.62\% and 1.60\% Average Dice higher than previous best results on CHD, MMWHS, CHAOS and AMOS, respectively. Keypoint-based representation has proven advantageous in various visual and robotic tasks. However, the existing 2D and 3D methods for detecting keypoints mainly rely on geometric consistency to achieve spatial alignment, neglecting temporal consistency. To address this issue, the Transporter method was introduced for 2D data, which reconstructs the target frame from the source frame to incorporate both spatial and temporal information. However, the direct application of the Transporter to 3D point clouds is infeasible due to their structural differences from 2D images. Thus, we propose the first 3D version of the Transporter, which leverages hybrid 3D representation, cross attention, and implicit reconstruction. We apply this new learning system on 3D articulated objects and nonrigid animals (humans and rodents) and show that learned keypoints are spatio-temporally consistent. Additionally, we propose a closed-loop control strategy that utilizes the learned keypoints for 3D object manipulation and demonstrate its superior performance. Despite over 40 years' development of optical logic computing, the studies have been still struggling to support more than four operands, since the high parallelism of light has not been fully leveraged blocked by the optical nonlinearity and redundant input modulation in existing methods. Here, we propose a scalable multi-input optical programmable logic array (PLA) with minimal logical input, enabled by parallel spectrum modulation. By making full use of the wavelength resource, an eight-input PLA is experimentally demonstrated, and there are 2^256 possible combinations of generated logic gates. Various complex logic fuctions, such as 8-256 decoder, 4-bit comparator, adder and multiplier are experimentally demonstrated via leveraging the PLA. The scale of PLA can be further extended by fully using the dimensions of wavelength and space. As an example, a nine-input PLA is implemented to realize the two-dimensional optical cellular automaton for the first time and perform Conway's Game of Life to simulate the evolutionary process of cells. Our work significantly alleviates the challenge of extensibility of optical logic devices, opening up new avenues for future large-scale, high-speed and energy-efficient optical digital computing.

Optical neural networks (ONNs) have gained significant attention due to their potential for high-speed and energy-efficient computation in artificial intelligence. The implementation of optical convolutions plays a vital role in ONNs, as they are fundamental operations within neural network architectures. However, state-of-the-art convolution architectures often suffer from redundant inputs, leading to substantial resource waste. Here, we propose an integrated optical convolution architecture that leverages the inherent routing principles of arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) to execute the sliding of convolution kernel and summation of results. M*N multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations are facilitated by M+N units within a single clock cycle, thus eliminating the redundancy. In the experiment, we achieved 5-bit precision and 91.9% accuracy in the handwritten digit recognition task confirming the reliability of our approach. Its redundancy-free architecture, low power consumption, high compute density (8.53 teraOP mm^-2 s^-1) and scalability make it a valuable contribution to the field of optical neural networks, thereby paving the way for future advancements in high-performance computing and artificial intelligence applications., Comment: The data are not sufficiently detailed and need to be supplemented with some detailed data

End-to-end weakly supervised semantic segmentation aims at optimizing a segmentation model in a single-stage training process based on only image annotations. Existing methods adopt an online-trained classification branch to provide pseudo annotations for supervising the segmentation branch. However, this strategy makes the classification branch dominate the whole concurrent training process, hindering these two branches from assisting each other. In our work, we treat these two branches equally by viewing them as diverse ways to generate the segmentation map, and add interactions on both their supervision and operation to achieve mutual promotion. For this purpose, a bidirectional supervision mechanism is elaborated to force the consistency between the outputs of these two branches. Thus, the segmentation branch can also give feedback to the classification branch to enhance the quality of localization seeds. Moreover, our method also designs interaction operations between these two branches to exchange their knowledge to assist each other. Experiments indicate our work outperforms existing end-to-end weakly supervised segmentation methods.

The increasing amount of data exchange requires higher-capacity optical communication links. Mode division multiplexing (MDM) is considered as a promising technology to support the higher data throughput. In an MDM system, the mode generator and sorter are the backbone. However, most of the current schemes lack the programmability and universality, which makes the MDM link susceptible to the mode crosstalk and environmental disturbances. In this paper, we propose an intelligent multimode optical communication link using universal mode processing (generation and sorting) chips. The mode processor consists of a programmable 4*4 Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI) network and can be intelligently configured to generate or sort both quasi linearly polarized (LP) modes and orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in any desired routing state. We experimentally establish a chip-to-chip MDM communication system. The mode basis can be freely switched between four LP modes and four OAM modes. We also demonstrate the multimode optical communication capability at a data rate of 25 Gbit/s. The proposed scheme shows significant advantages in terms of universality, intelligence, programmability and resistance to mode crosstalk, environmental disturbances and fabrication errors, demonstrating that the MZI-based reconfigurable mode processor chip has great potential in long-distance chip-to-chip multimode optical communication systems.

Annotator disagreement is ubiquitous in natural language processing (NLP) tasks. There are multiple reasons for such disagreements, including the subjectivity of the task, difficult cases, unclear guidelines, and so on. Rather than simply aggregating labels to obtain data annotations, we instead try to directly model the diverse perspectives of the annotators, and explicitly account for annotators' idiosyncrasies in the modeling process by creating representations for each annotator (annotator embeddings) and also their annotations (annotation embeddings). In addition, we propose TID-8, The Inherent Disagreement - 8 dataset, a benchmark that consists of eight existing language understanding datasets that have inherent annotator disagreement. We test our approach on TID-8 and show that our approach helps models learn significantly better from disagreements on six different datasets in TID-8 while increasing model size by fewer than 1% parameters. Thermo-optic (TO) phase shifters are very fundamental units in large-scale active silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs). However, due to the limitation of microheater materials with a trade-off between heating efficiency and absorption loss, designs reported so far typically suffer from slow response time, high power consumption, low yields, and so on. Here, we demonstrate an energy-efficient, fast-response, and low-loss TO phase shifter by introducing hydrogen-doped indium oxide (IHO) films as microheater, and the optimized electron concentration with enhanced mobility endows the IHO high conductivity as well as high near-infrared (NIR) transparency, which allow it to directly contact the silicon waveguide without any insulating layer for efficient tuning and fast response. The TO phase shifter achieves a sub-microsecond response time (970 ns/980 ns) with a {\pi} phase shift power consumption of 9.6 mW. And the insertion loss introduced by the IHO microheater is ~ 0.5 dB. The integration density of photonic integrated circuits has been limited by light coupling between waveguides. Traditional approaches to layout the waveguide with high density are based on refractive index engineering to suppress the light coupling between waveguides. However, these methods mostly require sophisticated and sensitive structure design, thus lack universality. Herein, we propose high-density multi-mode-multi-core integrated photonic waveguides by inserting high-loss metal strips between waveguides. We have achieved a 10-spatial-channel multi-mode-multi-core waveguide with total occupying spacing of 6.6 um. The multi-mode waveguides have a close spacing of 400 nm. The proposed scheme has high fabrication tolerance, ultra-large bandwidth and good compatibility to the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology. It can be applied to any integration platform, any working waveband and any operating mode, providing a universal solution for high-density photonic circuits.

Prior work on ideology prediction has largely focused on single modalities, i.e., text or images. In this work, we introduce the task of multimodal ideology prediction, where a model predicts binary or five-point scale ideological leanings, given a text-image pair with political content. We first collect five new large-scale datasets with English documents and images along with their ideological leanings, covering news articles from a wide range of US mainstream media and social media posts from Reddit and Twitter. We conduct in-depth analyses of news articles and reveal differences in image content and usage across the political spectrum. Furthermore, we perform extensive experiments and ablation studies, demonstrating the effectiveness of targeted pretraining objectives on different model components. Our best-performing model, a late-fusion architecture pretrained with a triplet objective over multimodal content, outperforms the state-of-the-art text-only model by almost 4% and a strong multimodal baseline with no pretraining by over 3%., Comment: EMNLP 2022

Stance detection is typically framed as predicting the sentiment in a given text towards a target entity. However, this setup overlooks the importance of the source entity, i.e., who is expressing the opinion. In this paper, we emphasize the need for studying interactions among entities when inferring stances. We first introduce a new task, entity-to-entity (E2E) stance detection, which primes models to identify entities in their canonical names and discern stances jointly. To support this study, we curate a new dataset with 10,619 annotations labeled at the sentence-level from news articles of different ideological leanings. We present a novel generative framework to allow the generation of canonical names for entities as well as stances among them. We further enhance the model with a graph encoder to summarize entity activities and external knowledge surrounding the entities. Experiments show that our model outperforms strong comparisons by large margins. Ideology is at the core of political science research. Yet, there still does not exist general-purpose tools to characterize and predict ideology across different genres of text. To this end, we study Pretrained Language Models using novel ideology-driven pretraining objectives that rely on the comparison of articles on the same story written by media of different ideologies. We further collect a large-scale dataset, consisting of more than 3.6M political news articles, for pretraining. Our model POLITICS outperforms strong baselines and the previous state-of-the-art models on ideology prediction and stance detection tasks. Integrated optical filter based on microring resonators plays a critical role in many applications, ranging from wavelength division multiplexing and switching to channel routing. Bandwidth tunable filters are capable of meeting the on-demand flexible operations in complex situations, due to their advantages of scalability, multi-function, and energy-saving. It has been investigated recently that parity-time (PT) symmetry coupled-resonant systems can be applied to the bandwidth-tunable filters. However, due to the trade-off between the bandwidth-tunable contrast ratio and insertion loss of system, the bandwidth-tunable contrast ratio of this method is severely limited. Here, the bandwidth-tunable contrast ratio is defined as the maximum bandwidth divided by the minimum bandwidth. In this work, we show that high bandwidth-tunable contrast ratio and low insertion loss of system can be achieved simultaneously by increasing the coupling strength between the input port and the resonant. System characterizations under different coupling states reveal that the low insertion loss can be obtained when the system initially operates at the over-coupling condition. A high bandwidth-tunable contrast ratio PT-symmetry band-pass filter with moderate insertion loss is shown on the Silicon platform. Our scheme provides an effective method to reduce the insertion loss of on-chip tunable filters, which is also applicable to the high-order cascaded microring systems., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

We demonstrate a fully-integrated multipurpose microwave frequency identification system on silicon-on-insulator platform. Thanks to its multipurpose features, the chip is able to identify different types of microwave signals, including single-frequency, multiple-frequency, chirped and frequency-hopping microwave signals, as well as discriminate instantaneous frequency variation among the frequency-modulated signals. Natural Language Understanding (NLU) is a branch of Natural Language Processing (NLP) that uses intelligent computer software to understand texts that encode human knowledge. Recent years have witnessed notable progress across various NLU tasks with deep learning techniques, especially with pretrained language models. Besides proposing more advanced model architectures, constructing more reliable and trustworthy datasets also plays a huge role in improving NLU systems, without which it would be impossible to train a decent NLU model. It's worth noting that the human ability of understanding natural language is flexible and robust. On the contrary, most of existing NLU systems fail to achieve desirable performance on out-of-domain data or struggle on handling challenging items (e.g., inherently ambiguous items, adversarial items) in the real world. Therefore, in order to have NLU models understand human language more effectively, it is expected to prioritize the study on robust natural language understanding. In this thesis, we deem that NLU systems are consisting of two components: NLU models and NLU datasets. As such, we argue that, to achieve robust NLU, the model architecture/training and the dataset are equally important. Specifically, we will focus on three NLU tasks to illustrate the robustness problem in different NLU tasks and our contributions (i.e., novel models and new datasets) to help achieve more robust natural language understanding. Moving forward, the ultimate goal for robust natural language understanding is to build NLU models which can behave humanly. With the goal of improving spectral efficiency, complex rotation-based precoding and power allocation schemes are developed for two multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, namely, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) and physical layer multicasting. While the state-of-the-art solutions for these problems use very different approaches, the proposed approach treats them similarly using a general tool and works efficiently for any number of antennas at each node. Through modeling the precoder using complex rotation matrices, objective functions (transmission rates) of the above systems can be formulated and solved in a similar structure. Hence, this approach simplifies signaling design for MIMO systems and can reduce the hardware complexity by having one set of parameters to optimize. Extensive numerical results show that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art solutions for both problems. It increases transmission rates for multicasting and achieves higher rate-energy regions in the SWIPT case. In both cases, the improvement is significant (20%-30%) in practically important settings where the users have one or two antennas. White laser covering the visible color spectrum is critical in various applications including vivid display, holographic imaging and light-based version of Wi-Fi, but it is still challenging to realize the white microlaser due to the rigorous requirement in the balance between the optical gain and the feedback at different wavelengths. Here, we employ Tm, Er and Yb ions corporately for the upconversion white lasing in a single ultrahigh quality (Q) (up to 108) doped microcavity, where the thresholds of the red, green and blue lasers are about 90, 500 and 300 {\mu}W, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first rare-earth elements based room-temperature, continuous-wave white microlaser, which exhibits relatively stable chromaticity over 180 minutes, making it possible for practical applications.

Using a deep autoencoder (DAE) for end-to-end communication in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is a novel concept with significant potential. DAE-aided MIMO has been shown to outperform singular-value decomposition (SVD)-based precoded MIMO in terms of bit error rate (BER). This paper proposes embedding left- and right-singular vectors of the channel matrix into DAE encoder and decoder to further improve the performance of the MIMO DAE. SVDembedded DAE largely outperforms theoretic linear precoding in terms of BER. This is remarkable since it demonstrates that DAEs have significant potential to exceed the limits of current system design by treating the communication system as a single, end-to-end optimization block. Based on the simulation results, at SNR=10dB, the proposed SVD-embedded design can achieve a BER of about $10^{-5}$ and reduce the BER at least 10 times compared with existing DAE without SVD, and up to 18 times compared with theoretical linear precoding. We attribute this to the fact that the proposed DAE can match the input and output as an adaptive modulation structure with finite alphabet input. Encircling an exceptional point (EP) in a parity-time (PT) symmetric system has shown great potential for chiral optical devices, such as chiral mode switching for symmetric and anti-symmetric modes. However, the chiral switching for polarization states has never been reported although chiral polarization manipulation has significant applications in imaging, sensing, and communication etc. Here inspired by the anti-PT symmetry, we demonstrate an on-chip chiral polarizer by constructing polarization-coupled anti-PT symmetric system for the first time. The transmission axes of the chiral polarizer are different for forward and backward propagation. A polarization extinction ratio of over 10 dB is achieved for both propagating directions. Moreover, a telecommunication experiment is performed to demonstrate the potential applications in polarization encoding signals. It provides a novel functionality for encircling-an-EP parametric evolution and offer a new approach for on-chip chiral polarization manipulation.

We theoretically propose and study in-plane anisotropic acoustic phonon polaritons (APhPs) based on a layered structure consisting of a monolayer (or few layers) {\alpha}-phase molybdenum trioxide ({\alpha}-MoO3) sandwiched between two metal layers. We find that the APhPs in the proposed sandwiched structures are a canalization (highly directional) electromagnetic mode propagating along with the layers and at the same time exhibit extreme electromagnetic-field confinement surpassing any other type of phonon-polariton modes. When a double layer of {\alpha}-MoO3 is sandwiched by two Au layers, twisting the two {\alpha}-MoO3 layers can adjust the interlayer polaritonic coupling and thus manipulate the in-plane propagation of the highly confined APhPs. On-chip manipulation of single resonance over broad background comb spectra of microring resonators is indispensable, ranging from tailoring laser emission, optical signal processing to non-classical light generation, yet challenging without scarifying the quality factor or inducing additional dispersive effects. Here, we propose an experimentally feasible platform to realize on-chip selective depletion of single resonance in microring with decoupled dispersion and dissipation, which are usually entangled by Kramer-Kroning relation. Thanks to the existence of non-Hermitian singularity, unsplit but significantly increased dissipation of the selected resonance is achieved due to the simultaneous collapse of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, fitting elegantly the requirement of pure single-mode depletion. With delicate yet experimentally feasible parameters, we show explicit evidence of modulation instability as well as deterministic single soliton generation in microresonators induced by depletion in normal and anomalous dispersion regime, respectively. Microlaser with multiple lasing bands is critical in various applications, such as full-colour display, optical communications and computing. Here, we propose a simple and efficient method for homogeneously doping rare earth elements into a silica whispering-gallery-mode microcavity. By this method, we demonstrate simultaneous and stable lasing covering ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared bands in an ultrahigh-Q (exceeding 108) Er-Yb co-doped silica microsphere under room temperature and continuous-wave pump for the first time. The lasing thresholds of the 380, 410, 450, 560, 660, 800, 1080 and 1550 nm-bands are estimated to be 380, 150, 2.5, 12, 0.17, 1.7, 10 and 38 {\mu}W, respectively, where the lasing in the 380, 410 and 450 nm-bands by Er element have not been separately demonstrated under room temperature and continuous-wave pump until this work. Thermo-optic microheater is indispensable in silicon photonic devices for smart and reconfigurable photonic networks. Much efforts have been made to improve the metallic microheater performance in the past decades. However, because of the metallic nature of light absorption, placing the metallic microheater very close to the waveguide for fast response is impractical and has not been done experimentally. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a metallic microheater placed very close to the waveguide based on parity-time (PT) symmetry breaking. The intrinsic high loss of metallic heater ensures the system will operate in the PT-symmetry-broken region, which guarantee the low loss of light in the silicon waveguide. Moreover, heating at a close range significantly reduces the response time. A fast response time of ~1 us is achieved without introducing extra loss. The insertion loss is only 0.1 dB for the long heater. The modulation bandwidth is 280 kHz, which is an order of magnitude improvement when compared with that of the mainstream thermo-optic phase shifters. To verify the capability of large-scale integration, a 1*8 phased array for beam steering is also demonstrated experimentally with the PT-symmetry-broken metallic heaters. Our work provides a novel design concept for low-loss fast-response optical switches with dissipative materials and offers a new approach to enhance the performance of thermo-optic phase shifters.

Clinical question answering (QA) aims to automatically answer questions from medical professionals based on clinical texts. Studies show that neural QA models trained on one corpus may not generalize well to new clinical texts from a different institute or a different patient group, where large-scale QA pairs are not readily available for model retraining. To address this challenge, we propose a simple yet effective framework, CliniQG4QA, which leverages question generation (QG) to synthesize QA pairs on new clinical contexts and boosts QA models without requiring manual annotations. In order to generate diverse types of questions that are essential for training QA models, we further introduce a seq2seq-based question phrase prediction (QPP) module that can be used together with most existing QG models to diversify the generation. Our comprehensive experiment results show that the QA corpus generated by our framework can improve QA models on the new contexts (up to 8% absolute gain in terms of Exact Match), and that the QPP module plays a crucial role in achieving the gain., Comment: IEEE BIBM 2021 Best Paper; The first two authors contributed equally

We present a large, challenging dataset, COUGH, for COVID-19 FAQ retrieval. Similar to a standard FAQ dataset, COUGH consists of three parts: FAQ Bank, Query Bank and Relevance Set. The FAQ Bank contains ~16K FAQ items scraped from 55 credible websites (e.g., CDC and WHO). For evaluation, we introduce Query Bank and Relevance Set, where the former contains 1,236 human-paraphrased queries while the latter contains ~32 human-annotated FAQ items for each query. We analyze COUGH by testing different FAQ retrieval models built on top of BM25 and BERT, among which the best model achieves 48.8 under P@5, indicating a great challenge presented by COUGH and encouraging future research for further improvement. This paper introduces a unified deep neural network (DNN)-based precoder for two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks with five objectives: data transmission, energy harvesting, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, physical layer (PHY) security, and multicasting. First, a rotation-based precoding is developed to solve the above problems independently. Rotation-based precoding is new precoding and power allocation that beats existing solutions in PHY security and multicasting and is reliable in different antenna settings. Next, a DNN-based precoder is designed to unify the solution for all objectives. The proposed DNN concurrently learns the solutions given by conventional methods, i.e., analytical or rotation-based solutions. A binary vector is designed as an input feature to distinguish the objectives. Numerical results demonstrate that, compared to the conventional solutions, the proposed DNN-based precoder reduces on-the-fly computational complexity more than an order of magnitude while reaching near-optimal performance (99.45\% of the averaged optimal solutions). The new precoder is also more robust to the variations of the numbers of antennas at the receivers.

On-chip optical interconnect has been widely accepted as a promising technology to realize future large-scale multiprocessors. Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) provides a new degree of freedom for optical interconnects to dramatically increase the link capacity. Present on-chip multimode devices are based on traditional wave-optics. Although large amount of computation and optimization are adopted to support more modes, mode-independent manipulation is still hard to be achieved due to severe mode dispersion. Here, we propose a universal solution to standardize the design of fundamental multimode building blocks, by introducing a geometrical-optics-like concept adopting waveguide width larger than the working wavelength. The proposed solution can tackle a group of modes at the same time with very simple processes, avoiding demultiplexing procedure and ensuring compact footprint. Compare to conventional schemes, it is scalable to larger mode channels without increasing the complexity and whole footprint. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate a set of multimode building blocks including crossing, bend, coupler and switches. Low losses of multimode waveguide crossing and bend are achieved, as well as ultra-low power consumption of the multimode switch is realized since it enables reconfigurable routing for a group of modes simultaneously. Our work promotes the multimode photonics research and makes the MDM technique more practical.
