1. A piezo-metastructure with bistable circuit shunts for adaptive nonreciprocal wave transmission

Abstract

In this paper, we present a piezo-metastructure shunted with bistable circuits to achieve adaptive nonreciprocal elastic wave transmission. Static properties of the bistable circuit are first investigated, followed by numerical investigation of wave transmission characteristics on the nonlinear piezo-metastructure. Both the local-resonance bandgap and the bandgap transmission phenomenon, also known as supratransmission, are explored and investigated. By introducing circuit asymmetry, the supratransmission thresholds, critical excitation amplitudes to enable bandgap transmission, are found at different levels for the different wave transmission directions and hence creating an excitation amplitude range within which nonreciprocal wave transmission can be facilitated. Effect of the asymmetry factor on nonreciprocity properties is subsequently analyzed and the trade-offs between the forward transmission amplitude and the range of excitation with nonreciprocity are identified. Additionally, it is demonstrated that wave transmission characteristics of the proposed nonlinear piezo-metastructure can be adaptively tuned by conveniently adjusting stable equilibria of the bistable circuit. Lastly, the observed wave transmission properties are further corroborated by experimental investigations. Abstract

The compressed-spring structure is a simple and reliable mechanism to achieve negative stiffness, which has been vastly investigated for achieving quasi-zero-stiffness isolation. However, six-degrees-of-freedom quasi-zero-stiffness isolators based on this kind of negative-stiffness mechanism still have not been touched. In this study, we propose a six-degrees-of-freedom quasi-zero-stiffness isolation platform constructed by six modules that use compressed-spring structures. Its underlying quasi-zero-stiffness principles in the translational and torsional directions are explained. By establishing the static model of the platform and linearizing it at the static equilibrium position, we find that the linear cross-coupling effects appear if the static load exists. Linearized dynamic analysis of the isolation platform is then performed and the results demonstrate that by applying spring compression, the isolation frequency band can be expanded to lower frequency range in six directions. Because of cross-coupling effects resulted from the static load, the platform cannot achieve whole-frequency-range isolation in the coupling directions even if the spring compressions satisfy quasi-zero-stiffness conditions. Abstract

A hybrid modeling method based on neural network (NN) is developed and used to model the hysteretic restoring force of a wire cable vibration isolation system for electronic equipment. Firstly, a knowledge-based model for the nonlinear hysteretic restoring force is identified using the measured data obtained from period loading tests. Secondly, the remaining characteristic of hysteretic restoring force, which cannot be modeled in an easy way, is identified using the NN method through network training. By building up a parallel hybrid NN model for the nonlinear hysteretic restoring force, the dynamic responses of the vibration isolation system under harmonic and broad band random excitations are predicted. The predicted results are compared with the measured ones to validate the effectiveness and prediction accuracy of the model. The comparative studies show the developed hybrid NN model possesses good prediction accuracy and generalization capability in contrast with the pure black box NN model.

Abstract

This paper investigates vibration control of beam through electro-magnetic constrained layer damping (EMCLD) which consists of electromagnet layer, permanent magnet layer and viscoelastic damping layer. When the coil of the electromagnet is electrified with proper control strategy, the electromagnet can exert magnetic force opposite to the direction of structural deformation so that the structural vibration is attenuated. A mathematical model is developed based on the equivalent current method to calculate the electromagnetic control force produced by EMCLD. The governing equations of the system are obtained using Hamilton's Principle and then reduced with the assumed-mode method. A simulation on vibration control of a cantilever beam is conducted under the velocity proportional feedback to demonstrate the energy dissipation capability of EMCLD, and the beam system with the same parameter is experimented. The results of experiment and simulation are compared and the results show that the EMCLD is an effective means for suppressing modal vibration. The results also indicate that the beam system has better control performance for larger control current. The EMCLD method presented in this paper provides an applicable and efficient tool for the vibration control of structures.
