Abstract

Benefiting from the diversity of electron orbitals, such as s, p, and d orbitals associated with a metal center, as well as the various molecular orbitals associated with organic ligands, metal–organic electrochromic materials can achieve different colors in a single device. Moreover, as both the tunability of organic materials (ligand) and the bistability of inorganic materials (metal ions) can be realized by these materials, significant research efforts have been devoted to their study. Metal–organic electrochromic materials with variety bright colors have been developed based on the dynamic coordination of metal ions and molecular switches as well as semi-solid devices. However, the optical modulation ability is limited by an insufficient content of metal ions. In this work, the dynamic coordination between Cu ions and molecular switches which consisted of 2-anilino-6-(dibutylamino)-3-methylfluoran and polymethyl methacrylate (ODBMA) was verified in the solid phase. Based on this coordination, a cuprous iodide (CuI) film was successfully synthesized on an indium tin oxide electrode. Owing to its bistability, the fabricated electrochromic device presents considerable potential for the development of energy-efficient smart windows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to observe the effects of mild mechanical stimulation on acupuncture points of spinal motor neurons and active substances of sciatic nerve injury in rats, and to explore the morphological basis for the recovery of motor function in rats with sciatic nerve injury, using mild acupuncture. Acupuncture in the local area of injury may cause further damage to the peripheral nerve injury. We believe that mild mechanical stimulation on the surface, using some specific acupuncture points can also have a positive effect on nerve repair. This method, called Chinese tuina, has existed for more than 2,000 years in China.MethodsThis study establishes a rat model using sciatic nerve crush injury. Rats received Chinese tuina in accordance with the principle of the three methods and three points, once a day, for 20 days. The rats’ status of hindlimb recovery was detected by a sciatic functional index. The labeled neuronal cell body was used to evaluate the fiber recovery after the rats’ sciatic nerve injury, using a neural tracing technique. Our team studied motor neuronal cell bodies, CGRP-positive cells, and the microglia of damaged sciatic nerves which were stained with fluorescent triple staining, adopting a confocal multi-layer scanning technique, and then the changes in neuronal activity distribution and expression, and changes of time and treatment were described, using the method of morphological description.ResultsSciatic nerve injury decreased the survival rate of motor neurons, affected CGRP-positive cells, and activated microglia in the ventral horn of the spinal cord. Compared with the model group, the survival of spinal ventral horn motor neurons was increased through tuina intervention. The swelling of CGRP-positive cells was alleviated, and the degree of microglia activation was less than that of the model group.ConclusionThis study used visual morphological findings to assess changes in neurons and active substances with time after injury of the peripheral nerve, and demonstrated that peripheral mild acupuncture intervention improved the capacity of neurofibrillary axoplasmic transport, regulated microglia activation, and significantly promoted the recovery of sciatic nerve injury.

Abstract

Light‐responsive color‐switching materials (LCMs) are long‐lasting hot fields. However, non‐ideal comprehensive performance (such as color contrast and retention time cannot be combined, unsatisfactory repeatability, and non‐automated coloring mode) significantly hinder their development toward high‐end products. Herein, the development of LCMs that exhibit long retention time, good color contrast, repeatability, and the property of automatic coloring is reported. The realization of this goal stems from the adoption of a bio‐inspired multi‐component collaborative step‐by‐step coloring strategy. Under this strategy, a conventional one‐step photochromic process is divided into a "light+heat" controlled multi‐step process for the fabrication of the desired LCMs. The obtained LCMs can effectively resist the long‐troubled ambient‐light interference and avoid its inherent yellow background, thereby achieving the longest retention time and good repeatability. Multiple colors are generated and ultra‐fast imaging compatible with the laser‐printing technology is also realized. The application potential of the materials in short‐term reusable identity cards, absorptive readers, billboards, and shelf labels is demonstrated. The results reported herein can potentially help in developing and designing various high‐performance, switchable materials that can be used for the production of high‐end products. Abstract

A controllable heterocyclic construction method to obtain planar structures with multiple fluorescent colors and excellent fluorescence quantum yields., Nitrogen heterocycles are significant structural components for organic compounds and pharmaceuticals. A new class of photooxidation products of oxazolidines with seven-membered heterocycles were reported in our previous work. These photosynthesized molecules have great potential for attractive fluorescent materials due to their unusual conjugated structure and rigidity. However, the violent UV irradiation during synthesis results in many undesirable side-products, making the purification and scale-up of desirable products difficult. Herein, the desired N–O seven-membered heterocycles were quantitatively synthesized one-step thermo-oxidation using O /CH I, I or -iodosuccinimide (NIS) as an oxidant. The structures of these compounds were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. During the thermal-oxidation process, intramolecular ionization generated a flexible –CH CH O group, which attacked the CC bond with the assistance of oxidants and subsequently led to the formation of the products. The formed seven-membered heterocycles exhibited remarkably enhanced fluorescence compared to the corresponding ring-open forms of oxazolidines, which possess more flexible conjugated substructures. In particular, the fluorescence quantum yields of some products reach 0.92 and 0.62 in the red emission region. Theoretical calculations suggest that the strong fluorescence originates from their unique structural rigidity and planarity and thus highly conjugated electron system. This work provides a new synthesis method for demanding medium-sized heterocycles with notably strong fluorescence. These new dyes have potential use as visible and fluorescent dual-mode colour inks, nucleophilic reagent response materials, and bio-label materials.

Abstract

A new and simple strategy towards electric‐field‐driven multiple chirality switching device has been designed and fabricated by combining a newly synthesized base‐responsive chiroptical polymer switch (R‐FLMA) and p‐benzoquinone (p‐BQ) via proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. Clear and stable triple chirality states (silence, positive, negative) of this device in visible band can be regulated reversibly (>1000 cycles) by adjusting voltage programs. Furthermore, such chiral switching phenomena are also accompanied by apparent changes of color and fluorescence. More importantly, the potential application of this device for a spatial light modulator has also been demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
