8. Cross-Ray Neural Radiance Fields for Novel-view Synthesis from Unconstrained Image Collections

Abstract

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) is a revolutionary approach for rendering scenes by sampling a single ray per pixel and it has demonstrated impressive capabilities in novel-view synthesis from static scene images. However, in practice, we usually need to recover NeRF from unconstrained image collections, which poses two challenges: 1) the images often have dynamic changes in appearance because of different capturing time and camera settings; 2) the images may contain transient objects such as humans and cars, leading to occlusion and ghosting artifacts. Conventional approaches seek to address these challenges by locally utilizing a single ray to synthesize a color of a pixel. In contrast, humans typically perceive appearance and objects by globally utilizing information across multiple pixels. To mimic the perception process of humans, in this paper, we propose Cross-Ray NeRF (CR-NeRF) that leverages interactive information across multiple rays to synthesize occlusion-free novel views with the same appearances as the images. Specifically, to model varying appearances, we first propose to represent multiple rays with a novel cross-ray feature and then recover the appearance by fusing global statistics, i.e., feature covariance of the rays and the image appearance. Moreover, to avoid occlusion introduced by transient objects, we propose a transient objects handler and introduce a grid sampling strategy for masking out the transient objects. We theoretically find that leveraging correlation across multiple rays promotes capturing more global information. Abstract

Learning structural information is critical for producing an ideal result in retinal image segmentation. Recently, convolutional neural networks have shown a powerful ability to extract effective representations. However, convolutional and pooling operations filter out some useful structural information. In this paper, we propose an Attention Guided Network (AG-Net) to preserve the structural information and guide the expanding operation. In our AG-Net, the guided filter is exploited as a structure sensitive expanding path to transfer structural information from previous feature maps, and an attention block is introduced to exclude the noise and reduce the negative influence of background further. The extensive experiments on two retinal image segmentation tasks (i.e., blood vessel segmentation, optic disc and cup segmentation) demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method., Comment: Accepted to MICCAI 2019. Abstract

Bone defects caused by trauma, tumor resection, and infections are significant clinical challenges. Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) usually accumulate in the defect area, which may impair the function of cells involved in bone formation, posing a serious challenge for bone repair. Due to the potent ROS scavenging ability, as well as potential anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities, antioxidants play an indispensable role in the maintenance and protection of bone health and have gained increasing attention in recent years. This narrative review aims to give an overview of the main research directions on the application of antioxidant compounds in bone defect repair over the past decade. In addition, the positive effects of various antioxidants and their biomaterial delivery systems in bone repair are summarized to provide new insights for exploring antioxidant-based strategies for bone defect repair. Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Panicum miliaceum involved in the repair of femur bone fracture in rats. Materials and Methods: In this study, 40 Wistar rats in five groups were studied as healthy, rats with lesion induced by surgery in femur (FX), FX rats treated with P. miliaceum extract (FX +100 and 200 P. miliaceum) and FX rats treated with Osteocare syrup (FX + OC). After 40 days, the serum levels of blood calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) along with activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) enzymes, and nitric oxide (NO) level were measured. The serum level of cytokines (IL-6, C-reactive protein [CRP], IL-10, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α]) was also measured by ELISA. The expression of OPG, RANK, RANKL, and BMP-2 genes and proteins were evaluated by real-time PCR and Western blotting techniques, respectively. Results: The results showed that P. miliaceum was able to decrease the activity of ALP enzyme in addition to increasing serum Ca and P levels and GPx, SOD, and CAT activity. P. miliaceum reduces serum IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α, and NO levels. Also, the extract of this plant could increase the expression of OPG/RANK/BMP-2 pathway genes and proteins. Conclusion: P. miliaceum can be used as a prodrug in traditional medicine to repair bone fractures and osteoporosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
