However, its relationship with functional outcome remains unclear.Methods: A retrospective explorative analysis was performed on SCI patients admitted to a tertiary academic medical center between January 2018 and June 2022. The candidate predictor variables, including demographics, clinical characteristics and complications, were analyzed with logistic and linear regression. Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) scores at discharge and mean relative functional gain (mRFG) of SCIM were as outcome parameters.Results: A total of 140 SCI patients included for the final analysis. Among them, 44 (31.43%) patients were tetraplegics, and 96 (68.57%) patients were paraplegics; 68 (48.57%) patients developed NP, and 72 (51.43%) patients did not. Logistic and linear regression analyses of SCIM at discharge both showed that NP [OR=3.10, 95% CI (1.29,7.45), P=0.01; unstandardized β=11.47, 95% CI (4.95,17.99), P< 0.01; respectively] was significantly independent predictors for a favorable outcome (SCIM at discharge ≥ 50, logistic regression results) and higher SCIM total score at discharge (linear regression results). Besides, NP [unstandardized β=15.67, 95% CI (8.94,22.41), P< 0.01] was also independently associated with higher mRFG of SCIM scores. Furthermore, the NP group had significantly higher mRFG, SCIM total scores and subscales (self-care, respiration and sphincter management, and mobility) at discharge compared to the non-NP group. However, there were no significant differences in mRFG, SCIM total score or subscales at discharge among the NP subgroups in terms of locations (at level pain, below level pain, and both) or timing of occurrence (within and after one month after SCI). This study also showed that incomplete injury, lumbar-sacral injury level and non-anemia were significantly independent predictors for a favorable outcome, and higher mRFG of SCIM scores (except for non-anemia).Conclusion: NP appears independently associated with better functional recovery in SCI patients, suggesting the bright side of this undesirable complication. Patients who received more than two treatment measures were assigned to the MDT group (n=228), and patients who received symptomatic medical drug treatment only were assigned to the traditional treatment group (n=79). The follow-up period ranged from 4 to 10 years, and the average follow-up period was 5.7 years. The results of the biochemical tests for hepatitis B virus deoxyribonucleic acid, hepatitis C virus ribonucleic acid, and autoantibodies to liver disease were analyzed.Results: The differences in gender and Child–Pugh grade of liver function between the two groups were not statistically significant. The MDT group had obvious advantages over the traditional treatment group in occupational composition, etiology composition, 5-year survival rate and annual hospitalization times. The leading causes of death in the MDT group, in descending order, were liver cancer, infection, mesenteric thrombosis, and non-hepatic disease, and, in the medical treatment group, they were liver failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, infection, and liver cancer. There was a significant statistical difference between the two groups (p < 0.05). In the multidisciplinary treatment, etiological treatment was the most widely used treatment, accounting for 79.8%, followed by endoscopic treatment (33.3%), peritoneal drainage and ascites reinfusion (25%), splenectomy combined with devascularization (11.4%) and stem cell transplantation and liver transplantation (1.8%).Conclusion: An MDT can improve the efficacy and prognosis of patients with cirrhosis and improve patient compliance. After multi-disciplinary intervention, the mortality spectrum of long-term survival patients with cirrhosis changes, and the mortality rate of liver cancer and non-liver disease increases.Keywords: liver cirrhosis, decompensated period, multidisciplinary team mode, traditional treatment, retrospective study

The objective of this review is to evaluate the effects of CIMs on the HRQOL of cancer patients. We identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving patients with cancer at any stage by retrieving electronic databases from the inception to February 14, 2018 (Systematic Review Registration: PROSPERO CRD42018091609). The main outcomes were HRQOL scores and related domains such as physical well-being scores. The standardized mean difference was used for the analysis and heterogeneity was assessed with the I2, statistic. A Bayesian framework was used to estimate the ranking order of efficacy in HRQOL change. Finally, 34 RCTs with 3,010 patients were included. As a whole, the results showed clearly superior efficacy of CIM in improving HRQOL. For different domains of HRQOL, different CIM interventions may play different roles. The ranking order of efficacy in change HRQOL was qigong plus mindfulness, Chinese herbal medicine, multimodal complementary medicine, qigong, nutritional supplement, mindfulness, acupuncture, yoga, and massage, and it was different among different domains. There was no evidence of publication bias. In conclusion, CIM may improve the HRQOL of cancer patients. Objective: We investigated white sponge nevus (WSN) in a Chinese family, and tried to find new mutation and demonstrated that this mutation is the causative mutation for WSN in this family and this condition affects a functionally important segment of the keratin 4 protein. Materials and methods: We studied the affected family with the 32-year-old female patient, her mother, her younger sister and her daughter. Pathologic examinations were performed. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood lymphocytes, K4 and K13 genes were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced. Results: Direct sequencing of PCR products revealed two new mutations in the keratin 4 gene, the heterozygous missense mutation 1829G→A in exon 2B, and 2324A→G in non-coding region. No any mutation was found in the keratin 13 gene. Conclusions: We found two new mutations in the keratin 4, which may be related with the development of WSN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large-scale proteomics studies can refine our understanding of health and disease and enable precision medicine. Here, we provide a detailed atlas of 2,920 plasma proteins linking to diseases (406 prevalent and 660 incident) and 986 health-related traits in 53,026 individuals (median follow-up: 14.8 years) from the UK Biobank, representing the most comprehensive proteome profiles to date. This atlas revealed 168,100 protein-disease associations and 554,488 protein-trait associations. Over 650 proteins were shared among at least 50 diseases, and over 1,000 showed sex and age heterogeneity. Furthermore, proteins demonstrated promising potential in disease discrimination (area under the curve [AUC] > 0.80 in 183 diseases). Finally, integrating protein quantitative trait locus data determined 474 causal proteins, providing 37 drug-repurposing opportunities and 26 promising targets with favorable safety profiles. As an abundant agricultural and forestry biomass resource, hemicelluloses are hard to be effectively degraded and utilized by microorganisms due to the constraints of membrane and metabolic regulations. Herein, we report a synthetic extracellular metabolic pathway with hemicellulose-degrading-enzymes controllably displayed on Escherichia coli surface as engineered bacterial consortia members for efficient utilization of xylan, the most abundant component in hemicellulose. Further, we develop a hemicellulose/O 2 microbial fuel cell (MFC) configuring of enzyme-engineered bacterial consortia based bioanode and bacterial-displayed laccase based biocathode. The optimized MFC exhibited an open-circuit voltage of 0.71 V and a maximum power density (P max ) of 174.33 ± 4.56 µW cm -2 . Meanwhile, 46.6% (w/w) α-ketoglutarate was produced in this hemicellulose fed-MFC. Besides, the MFC retained over 95% of the P max during 6 days' operation. Therefore, this work establishes an effective and sustainable one-pot process for catalyzing renewable biomass into high-value products and electricity in an environmentally-friendly way., (© 2024. High-order topological phases of matter refer to the systems of n-dimensional bulk with the topology of m-th order, exhibiting (n-m)-dimensional boundary modes and can be characterized by topological pumping. Here, we experimentally demonstrate two types of second-order topological pumps, forming four 0-dimensional corner localized states on a 4×4 square lattice array of 16 superconducting qubits. The initial ground state of the system at half-filling, as a product of four identical entangled 4-qubit states, is prepared using an adiabatic scheme. During the pumping procedure, we adiabatically modulate the superlattice Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian by precisely controlling both the hopping strengths and on-site potentials. At the half pumping period, the system evolves to a corner-localized state in a quadrupole configuration. The robustness of the second-order topological pump is also investigated by introducing different on-site disorder. Our Letter studies the topological properties of high-order topological phases from the dynamical transport picture using superconducting qubits, which would inspire further research on high-order topological phases.

Aims: Brain structural alterations begin long before the presentation of brain disorders; therefore, we aimed to systematically investigate a wide range of influencing factors on neuroimaging markers of brain health., Methods: Utilizing data from 30,651 participants from the UK Biobank, we explored associations between 218 modifiable factors and neuroimaging markers of brain health. We conducted an exposome-wide association study using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) technique. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were further employed to estimate potential nonlinear correlations. Weighted standardized scores for neuroimaging markers were computed based on the estimates for individual factors. Finally, stratum-specific analyses were performed to examine differences in factors affecting brain health at different ages., Results: The identified factors related to neuroimaging markers of brain health fell into six domains, including systematic diseases, lifestyle factors, personality traits, social support, anthropometric indicators, and biochemical markers. The explained variance percentage of neuroimaging markers by weighted standardized scores ranged from 0.5% to 7%. Notably, associations between systematic diseases and neuroimaging markers were stronger in older individuals than in younger ones., Conclusion: This study identified a series of factors related to neuroimaging markers of brain health. Introduction: The heritability of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is estimated to be 58%-79%. However, known genes can only partially explain the heritability., Methods: Here, we conducted gene-based exome-wide association study (ExWAS) of rare variants and single-variant ExWAS of common variants, utilizing data of 54,569 clinically diagnosed/proxy AD and related dementia (ADRD) and 295,421 controls from the UK Biobank., Results: Gene-based ExWAS identified 11 genes predicting a higher ADRD risk, including five novel ones, namely FRMD8, DDX1, DNMT3L, MORC1, and TGM2, along with six previously reported ones, SORL1, GRN, PSEN1, ABCA7, GBA, and ADAM10. Single-variant ExWAS identified two ADRD-associated novel genes, SLCO1C1 and NDNF. The identified genes were predominantly enriched in amyloid-β process pathways, microglia, and brain regions like hippocampus. The druggability evidence suggests that DDX1, DNMT3L, TGM2, SLCO1C1, and NDNF could be effective drug targets., Discussion: Our study contributes to the current body of evidence on the genetic etiology of ADRD., Highlights: Gene-based analyses of rare variants identified five novel genes for Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD), including FRMD8, DDX1, DNMT3L, MORC1, and TGM2. Recent expansion of proteomic coverage opens unparalleled avenues to unveil new biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Among 6,361 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins analysed from the ADNI database, YWHAG performed best in diagnosing both biologically (AUC = 0.969) and clinically (AUC = 0.857) defined AD. Four- (YWHAG, SMOC1, PIGR and TMOD2) and five- (ACHE, YWHAG, PCSK1, MMP10 and IRF1) protein panels greatly improved the accuracy to 0.987 and 0.975, respectively. Their superior performance was validated in an independent external cohort and in discriminating autopsy-confirmed AD versus non-AD, rivalling even canonical CSF ATN biomarkers. Moreover, they effectively predicted the clinical progression to AD dementia and were strongly associated with AD core biomarkers and cognitive decline. Synaptic, neurogenic and infectious pathways were enriched in distinct AD stages. Mendelian randomization did not support the significant genetic link between CSF proteins and AD. Our findings revealed promising high-performance biomarkers for AD diagnosis and prediction, with implications for clinical trials targeting different pathomechanisms., (© 2024. Background: Shift work is associated with susceptibility to several neuropsychiatric disorders. This study aims to investigate the effect of shift work on the incidence of neuropsychiatric disorders, and highlighting how individual variability may influence the association., Methods: UK Biobank participants with employment information were included. Cox survival was conducted in main and subgroup analyses. Correlation analyses explored the impact of shift work on brain structures, and mediation analyses were performed to elucidate the shared underlying mechanisms. Shift work tolerance was evaluated through survival analyses contrasting the risks associated with five neuropsychiatric disorders in shift versus non-shift workers across different demographic or occupational strata., Results: The analysis encompassed 254,646 participants. Shift work was associated with higher risk of dementia (HR 1.29, 95 % CI 1.10-1.52), anxiety (1.08, 1.01-1.15), depression (1.29, 1.22-1.36), and sleep disorders (1.18, 1.09-1.28), but not stroke (p = 0.20). Shift work was correlated with decreasing volume of various brain regions, particularly in thalamus, lateral orbitofrontal, and middle temporal. Mediation analysis revealed that increased immune response and glucose levels are common pathways linking shift work to these disorders. We observed diversity in shift work tolerance across different individual characteristics, among which socioeconomic status and length of working hours were the most essential., Limitations: Self-reported employment information may cause misclassification and recall bias. Telomere length is a putative biomarker of aging and is associated with multiple age-related diseases. There are limited data on the landscape of rare genetic variations in telomere length. Here, we systematically characterize the rare variant associations with leukocyte telomere length (LTL) through exome-wide association study (ExWAS) among 390,231 individuals in the UK Biobank. We identified 18 robust rare-variant genes for LTL, most of which estimated effects on LTL were significant (> 0.2 standard deviation per allele). The biological functions of the rare-variant genes were associated with telomere maintenance and capping and several genes were specifically expressed in the testis. Three novel genes (ASXL1, CFAP58, and TET2) associated with LTL were identified. Phenotypic association analyses indicated significant associations of ASXL1 and TET2 with cancers, age-related diseases, blood assays, and cardiovascular traits. Survival analyses suggested that carriers of ASXL1 or TET2 variants were at increased risk for cancers; diseases of the circulatory, respiratory, and genitourinary systems; and all-cause and cause-specific deaths. The CFAP58 carriers were at elevated risk of deaths due to cancers. Collectively, the present whole exome sequencing study provides novel insights into the genetic landscape of LTL, identifying novel genes associated with LTL and their implications on human health and facilitating a better understanding of aging, thus pinpointing the genetic relevance of LTL with clonal hematopoiesis, biomedical traits, and health-related outcomes., (© 2024. Quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) is a quantum communication paradigm that transmits confidential messages directly using quantum states. Measurement-device-independent (MDI) QSDC protocols can eliminate the security loopholes associated with measurement devices. To enhance the practicality and performance of MDI-QSDC protocols, we propose a one-photon-interference MDI QSDC (OPI-QSDC) protocol which transcends the need for quantum memory, ideal single-photon sources, or entangled light sources. The security of our OPI-QSDC protocol has also been analyzed using quantum wiretap channel theory. Furthermore, our protocol could double the distance of usual prepare-and-measure protocols, since quantum states sending from adjacent nodes are connected with single-photon interference, which demonstrates its potential to extend the communication distance for point-to-point QSDC.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), one of the most serious long-term consequences of diabetes, is closely associated with myocardial fatty acid metabolism. Carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1β (CPT-1β) is the rate-limiting enzyme responsible for β-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids. Intermedin (IMD) is a pivotal bioactive small molecule peptide, participating in the protection of various cardiovascular diseases. However, the role and underlying mechanisms of IMD in DCM are still unclear. In this study, we investigated whether IMD alleviates DCM via regulating CPT-1β. A rat DCM model was established by having rats to drink fructose water for 12 weeks. A mouse DCM model was induced by feeding mice a high-fat diet for 16 weeks. We showed that IMD and its receptor complexes levels were significantly down-regulated in the cardiac tissues of DCM rats and mice. Reduced expression of IMD was also observed in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes treated with palmitic acid (PA, 300 μM) in vitro. Exogenous and endogenous IMD mitigated cardiac hypertrophy, fibrosis, dysfunction, and lipid accumulation in DCM rats and IMD-transgenic DCM mice, whereas knockout of IMD worsened these pathological processes in IMD-knockout DCM mice. In vitro, IMD alleviated PA-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and cardiac fibroblast activation. We found that CPT-1β enzyme activity, mRNA and protein levels, and acetyl-CoA content were increased in T2DM patients, rats and mice. IMD up-regulated the CPT-1β levels and acetyl-CoA content in T2DM rats and mice. Knockdown of CPT-1β blocked the effects of IMD on increasing acetyl-CoA content and on inhibiting cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and cardiac fibroblast activation. IMD receptor antagonist IMD 17-47 and the phosphatidyl inositol 3 kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) inhibitor LY294002 reversed the effects of IMD on up-regulating CPT-1β and acetyl-CoA expression and on inhibiting cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and cardiac fibroblast activation. We revealed that IMD alleviates DCM by up-regulating CPT-1β via calcitonin receptor-like receptor/receptor activity-modifying protein (CRLR/RAMP) receptor complexes and PI3K/Akt signaling. IMD may serve as a potent therapeutic target for the treatment of DCM.

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a devastating neurological disease with complex genetic etiology. Yet most known loci have only identified from the late-onset type AD in populations of European ancestry., Methods: We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) of AD totaling 6878 Chinese and 63,926 European individuals., Results: In addition to the apolipoprotein E (APOE) locus, our GWAS of two independent Chinese samples uncovered three novel AD susceptibility loci (KIAA2013, SLC52A3, and TCN2) and a novel ancestry-specific variant within EGFR (rs1815157). More replicated variants were observed in the Chinese (31%) than in the European samples (15%). In combining genome-wide associations and functional annotations, EGFR and TCN2 were prioritized as two of the most biologically significant genes. Phenome-wide Mendelian randomization suggests that high mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration might protect against AD., Discussion: The current study reveals novel AD susceptibility loci, emphasizes the importance of diverse populations in AD genetic research, and advances our understanding of disease etiology., Highlights: Loci KIAA2013, SLC52A3, and TCN2 were associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Chinese populations. rs1815157 within the EGFR locus was associated with AD in Chinese populations. The genetic architecture of AD varied between Chinese and European populations. EGFR and TCN2 were prioritized as two of the most biologically significant genes. In the investigation of heterotrimeric G protein-mediated signal transduction in planta, their roles in the transmittance of low K + stimuli remain to be elucidated. Here, we found that the primary root growth of wild-type Arabidopsis was gradually inhibited with the decrease of external K + concentrations, while the primary root of the mutants for G protein β subunit AGB1 and γ subunits AGG1, AGG2 and AGG3 could still grow under low K + conditions (LK). Exogenous NAA application attenuated primary root elongation in agb1 and agg1/2/3 but promoted the growth in wild-type seedlings under LK stress. Using ProDR5:GFP, ProPIN1:PIN1-GFP and ProPIN2:PIN2-GFP reporter lines, a diminishment in auxin concentration at the radicle apex and a reduction in PIN1and PIN2 efflux carrier abundance were observed in wild-type roots under LK, a phenomenon not recorded in the agb1 and agg1/2/3. Further proteolytic and transcriptional assessments revealed an enhanced degradation of PIN1 and a suppressed expression of PIN2 in the wild-type background under LK, contrasting with the stability observed in the agb1 and agg1/2/3 mutants. Our results indicate that the G protein β and γ subunits play pivotal roles in suppressing of Arabidopsis root growth under LK by modulating auxin redistribution via alterations in PIN1 degradation and PIN2 biosynthesis., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Characterizing the nature of hydrodynamical transport properties in quantum dynamics provides valuable insights into the fundamental understanding of exotic non-equilibrium phases of matter. Experimentally simulating infinite-temperature transport on large-scale complex quantum systems is of considerable interest. Here, using a controllable and coherent superconducting quantum simulator, we experimentally realize the analog quantum circuit, which can efficiently prepare the Haar-random states, and probe spin transport at infinite temperature. We observe diffusive spin transport during the unitary evolution of the ladder-type quantum simulator with ergodic dynamics. Moreover, we explore the transport properties of the systems subjected to strong disorder or a tilted potential, revealing signatures of anomalous subdiffusion in accompany with the breakdown of thermalization. Our work demonstrates a scalable method of probing infinite-temperature spin transport on analog quantum simulators, which paves the way to study other intriguing out-of-equilibrium phenomena from the perspective of transport., (© 2024. Introduction: Evidence supporting cardiovascular diseases could increase the risk of dementia remains fragmented. A comprehensive study to illuminate the distinctive associations across different dementia types is still lacking. This study is sought to: (1) determine the clinical validity of Framingham General Cardiovascular Risk Score (FGCRS) for dementia assessment and (2) examine the associations between cardiovascular diseases and the risk of dementia., Methods: A total of 432 079 dementia-free individuals at baseline from UK Biobank were included. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to investigate the prospective associations for FGCRS and a series of cardiovascular diseases with all-cause dementia (ACD) and its major components, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD)., Results: During a median follow-up of 110.1 months, 4711 individuals were diagnosed with dementia. FGCRS was associated with increased risks across the dementia spectrum. In stratification analysis, high-risk groups have demonstrated the greatest dementia burdens, particularly to VaD. Over 74 traits, 9 adverse associations, such as chronic ischaemic heart disease (ACD: HR=1.354; AD: HR=1.269; VaD: HR=1.768), atrioventricular block (ACD: HR=1.562; AD: HR=1.556; VaD: HR=2.069), heart failure (ACD: HR=1.639; AD: HR=1.543; VaD: HR=2.141) and hypotension (ACD: HR=2.912; AD: HR=2.361; VaD: HR=3.315) were observed. Several distinctions were also found, with atrial fibrillation, cerebral infarction, and haemorrhage only associated with greater risks of ACD and VaD., Discussion: By identifying distinctive associations between cardiovascular diseases and dementia, this study has established a comprehensive 'mapping' that may untangle the long-standing discrepancy. Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurological disorder. There is a considerable unmet medical need among those suffering from it., Hypothesis and Purpose: Given the link between type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and AD, hypoglycemic traditional Chinese medicine formulas (TCMFs) may be a treatment for AD. We investigated the possibility of identifying anti-AD medicines in hypoglycemic TCMFs and presented another option for the screening of AD medications., Study Design and Methods: Paralysis of the transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) strain CL4176 (caused by amyloid beta (Aβ) 1-42 aggregates) was used to evaluate the anti-AD effect. The toxicity and neurodegeneration induced by neuronal expression of Aβ in the transgenic C. elegans strain CL2355 were determined using a 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) assay. The transgenic Aβ-expressing strain CL 2006 and transgenic tau-expressing strain BR5270 were used to explore the effect of TCMFs on protein expression in C. elegans using ELISAs. Then, network pharmacology was used to determine the mechanism of action. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance Support System platform was used to investigate prescription patterns, core drugs, and optimum combinations of hypoglycemic TCMFs for AD., Results: Sixteen hypoglycemic TCMFs prolonged the PT50 (half paralysis time) of the CL4176 strain of C. elegans, reduced the percentage of worms paralyzed. The results of network pharmacology showed that prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2) and acetylcholine esterase (AChE) are main targets of hypoglycemic TCMFs. Enriched pathway analysis showed that the cholinergic receptor-related pathway was the core pathway of hypoglycemic TCMFs. According to the "four qi and five flavors" system of TCM theory, the main pharmacological qualities were "cold" and "sweet." Through the analysis by TCMISS, we found that Huangqi-Gegen drug pair as the significant Chinese herbs of hypoglycemic TCMFs. The Huangqi-Gegen pairing had the most robust therapeutic effect when delivered at a 2:1 (v/v) ratio. Iron plays a fundamental role in multiple brain disorders. However, the genetic underpinnings of brain iron and its implications for these disorders are still lacking. Here, we conduct an exome-wide association analysis of brain iron, measured by quantitative susceptibility mapping technique, across 26 brain regions among 26,789 UK Biobank participants. We find 36 genes linked to brain iron, with 29 not being previously reported, and 16 of them can be replicated in an independent dataset with 3,039 subjects. Many of these genes are involved in iron transport and homeostasis, such as FTH1 and MLX. Several genes, while not previously connected to brain iron, are associated with iron-related brain disorders like Parkinson's (STAB1, KCNA10), Alzheimer's (SHANK1), and depression (GFAP). Mendelian randomization analysis reveals six causal relationships from regional brain iron to brain disorders, such as from the hippocampus to depression and from the substantia nigra to Parkinson's. Aims: Apply established cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum biomarkers and novel combined indicators based on the amyloid/tau/neurodegeneration (ATN) framework to improve diagnostic and prognostic power in patients with rapidly progressive dementias (RPDs)., Methods: CSF and serum biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) common neuropathology including Aβ42, Aβ40, p-Tau, and t-Tau were measured in cognitively normal (CN) controls (n = 33) and three RPD groups with rapidly progressive AD (rpAD, n = 23), autoimmune encephalitis (AE, n = 25), and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD, n = 28). Logistic regression and multiple linear regression were used for producing combined indicators and prognostic assessment, respectively, including A&T, A&N, T&N, A&T&N, etc. RESULTS: Combined diagnostic indicator with A&T&N had the potential for differentiating AE from other types of RPDs, identifying 62.51% and 75% of AE subjects based on CSF and serum samples, respectively, compared to 39.13% and 37.5% when using autoantibodies. CSF t-Tau was associated with survival in the CJD group (adjusted R-Square = 0.16, p = 0.02), and its prognosis value improved when using combined predictors based on the ATN framework (adjusted R-Square = 0.273, p = 0.014)., Conclusion: Combined indicators based on the ATN framework provide a novel perspective for establishing biomarkers for early recognition of RPDs due to treatment-responsive causes., (© 2024 The Author(s). We investigate the meson excitations (particle-antiparticle bound states) in quantum many-body scars of a 1D Z&#95;{2} lattice gauge theory coupled to a dynamical spin-1/2 chain as a matter field. By introducing a string representation of the physical Hilbert space, we express a scar state |Ψ&#95;{n,l}⟩ as a superposition of all string bases with an identical string number n and a total length l. For the small-l scar state |Ψ&#95;{n,l}⟩, the gauge-invariant spin exchange correlation function of the matter field hosts an exponential decay as the distance increases, indicating the existence of stable mesons. However, for large l, the correlation function exhibits a power-law decay, signaling the emergence of nonmesonic excitations. Furthermore, we show that this mesonic-nonmesonic crossover can be detected by the quench dynamics, starting from two low-entangled initial states, respectively, which are experimentally feasible in quantum simulators. Our results expand the physics of quantum many-body scars in lattice gauge theories and reveal that the nonmesonic state can also manifest ergodicity breaking.

Rhizosphere is a vital area for substance exchange and energy transfer between roots and soil microorganisms. Therefore, diazotrophs in the rhizosphere play a pivotal role in facilitating plant nitrogen acquisition. We investigated the variability in the abundance and community structure of soil diazotrophs and the influencing factors across rhizosphere soils of Cunninghamia lanceolata in three locations: Baisha State-owned Forest Farm in Longyan City (BS), Sanming Forest Ecosystem and Global Change Research Station (SM), and Wuyishan National Forest Park in Nanping City (WYS), located in the western region of Fujian Province, quantified the diazotrophic abundance by using real-time quantitative PCR, and assessed the community structure by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that soil pH, C:N ratio, and C:(N:P) stoichiometry in SM were notably lower compared to those in BS and WYS. In SM, the abundance of the nifH gene was 6.38×10 8 copies·g -1 , significantly lower than 1.35×10 9 copies·g -1 in BS and 1.10×10 9 copies·g -1 in WYS. Additionally, α diversity index of diazotrophs was lower in SM compared to BS and WYS, while the community structure of diazotrophs in rhizosphere soils of BS and WYS was similar, which differed significantly from that in SM. The diazotrophic sequences in the three forest farms could be divided into 5 phylum, 8 classes, 15 orders, 23 families and 33 genera, with Proteobacteria, α-proteobacteria, and Bradyrhizobium as the dominant phylotypes. Soil pH, available phosphorus, NO 3 - -N and C:(N:P) ratio were identified as significant factors influencing both the abundance and community structure of nifH genes, with soil pH performing the greatest. Taken together, there were spatial variations in the distribution of diazotrophic abundance and community structure in C. lanceolata rhizosphere soils, with soil pH as the primary driving factor.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a malignant cardiovascular disease. Eukaryotic initiation factor 2α (eIF2α) plays an important role in the proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) in hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension (HPH) rats. However, the regulatory mechanism of eIF2α remains poorly understood in PAH rats. Here, we discover eIF2α is markedly upregulated in monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PAH rats, eIF2α can be upregulated by mRNA methylation, and upregulated eIF2α can promote PASMC proliferation in MCT-PAH rats. GSK2606414, eIF2α inhibitor, can downregulate the expression of eIF2α and alleviate PASMC proliferation in MCT-PAH rats. And we further discover the mRNA of eIF2α has a common sequence with N 6-methyladenosine (m 6 A) modification by bioinformatics analysis, and the expression of METTL3, WTAP, and YTHDF1 is upregulated in MCT-PAH rats. These findings suggest a potentially novel mechanism by which eIF2α is upregulated by m 6 A modification in MCT-PAH rats, which is involved in the pathogenesis of PAH., (© 2023. Cu 2+ as an important trace element plays an essential role in various biologic processes due to the unique redox active nature. For this reason, much effort has been made to develop effective methods for Cu 2+ detection. In this study, a novel structure fluorescent chemosensor, 1-(6-(((5-(5, 5-difluoro-1, 3, 7, 9-tetramethyl-5H-4λ 4 , 5λ 4 -dipyrrolo[1, 2-c:2', 1'-f][1, 3, 2] diazaborinin-10-yl)quinolin-8-yl)oxy)methyl)pyridin-2-yl)-N, N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine (1), was synthesized and characterized by 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Sensor 1 showed an obviously "on-off" fluorescence response to Cu 2+ with a 1:1 binding stoichiometry by UV-vis and fluorescence spectrophotometry. The detection limit of sensor 1 to Cu 2+ was determined to be 1.9 µM, and the stable pH range for Cu 2+ detection was from 3 to 13. While numerous genomic loci have been identified for neuropsychiatric conditions, the contribution of protein-coding variants has yet to be determined. Here we conducted a large-scale whole-exome-sequencing study to interrogate the impact of protein-coding variants on 46 neuropsychiatric diseases and 23 traits in 350,770 adults from the UK Biobank. Twenty new genes were associated with neuropsychiatric diseases through coding variants, among which 16 genes had impacts on the longitudinal risks of diseases. Thirty new genes were associated with neuropsychiatric traits, with SYNGAP1 showing pleiotropic effects across cognitive function domains. Pairwise estimation of genetic correlations at the coding-variant level highlighted shared genetic associations among pairs of neurodegenerative diseases and mental disorders. Lastly, a comprehensive multi-omics analysis suggested that alterations in brain structures, blood proteins and inflammation potentially contribute to the gene-phenotype linkages. Chickpea protein (CP) is a promising plant protein ingredient, but the poor solubility has limited its broad application. In this study, heating followed by high-pressure homogenization (HPH) was used to improve the solubility of CP. The results showed that combined heat (80℃, 30 min) and HPH (80 MPa, 2 cycles) treatment exhibited an additive effect in improving the solubility of CP. This improvement could be attributed to the dissociation and the rearrangement of large insoluble protein aggregates into small-sized soluble protein aggregates, the increased exposure of hydrophobic residues and reactive sulfhydryl groups, the transformation of α-helices to β-sheets and β-turns. Moreover, the 11S subunits of CP could form reinforced disulfide covalent cross-links under heating + HPH, which may provide steric hindrance preventing the reassembly of large protein bodies. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common atmospheric pollutants, and they are also ubiquitous in the interstellar medium. Here, we report the study of a complex O-containing PAH anion, the deprotonated 2-hydroxytriphenylene (2-OtPh-), using high-resolution photoelectron imaging and photodetachment spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled anions. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra yield the electron affinity of the 2-OtPh radical as 2.629(1) eV and several vibrational frequencies for its ground electronic state. Photodetachment spectroscopy reveals bound valence excited electronic states for the 2-OtPh- anion, with unprecedentedly rich vibronic features. Evidence is presented for a low-lying triplet state (T1) and two singlet states (S1 and S2) below the detachment threshold. Single-color resonant two-photon photoelectron spectroscopy uncovers rich photophysics for the 2-OtPh- anion, including vibrational relaxation in S1, internal conversion to the ground state of 2-OtPh-, intersystem crossing from S2 to T1, and a long-lived autodetaching shape resonance about 1.3 eV above the detachment threshold. The rich electronic structure and photophysics afforded by the current study suggest that 2-OtPh- would be an interesting system for pump-probe experiments to unravel the dynamics of the excited states of this complex PAH anion., (© 2024 Author(s). With increasingly used assisted reproductive technology (ART), the acquisition of high-quality oocytes and early embryos has become the focus of much attention. Studies in mice have found that the transition of chromatin conformation from non-surrounded nucleolus (NSN) to surrounded nucleolus (SN) is essential for oocyte maturation and early embryo development, and similar chromatin transition also exists in human oocytes. In this study, we collected human NSN and SN oocytes and investigated their transcriptome. The analysis of differentially expressed genes showed that epigenetic functions, cyclin-dependent kinases and transposable elements may play important roles in chromatin transition during human oocyte maturation. Background: Muscle weakness is a prominent feature of Parkinson's disease, but whether the occurrence of this deficit in healthy adults is associated with subsequent PD diagnosis remains unclear., Objective: This study sought to examine the relationship between muscle strength, represented by grip strength and walking pace, and the risk of incident PD., Methods: A total of 422,531 participants from the UK biobank were included in this study. Longitudinal associations of grip strength and walking pace with the risk of incident PD were investigated by Cox proportional hazard models adjusting for several well-established risk factors. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also conducted for further validation., Results: After a median follow-up of 9.23 years, 2,118 (0.5%) individuals developed incident PD. For per 5 kg increment of absolute grip strength, there was a significant 10.2% reduction in the risk of incident PD (HR = 0.898, 95% CI [0.872-0.924], P < 0.001). Similarly, per 0.05 kg/kg increment of relative grip strength was related to a 9.2% reduced risk of incident PD (HR = 0.908, 95% CI [0.887-0.929], P < 0.001). Notably, the associations remained consistent when grip strength was calculated as quintiles. Moreover, participants with a slower walking pace demonstrated an elevated risk of incident PD (HR = 1.231, 95%CI [1.075-1.409], P = 0.003). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses further validated the robustness of the observed associations., Conclusion: Our findings showed a negative association of grip strength and walking pace with the risk of incident PD independent of important confounding factors. Objective: To explore a precise association between tumor location and lymph node (LN) biopsy algorithm in uterine confined endometrial cancer (EC)., Materials and Methods: Patients with EC treated in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, South Branch of Fujian Provincial Hospital were included in this observational retrospective study. Based on the procedure of treatment, patients were separated to stage I (2015.07-2019.09) and stage II (2019.09-2021.9). In each stage, patients were separated to high and low-risk group by the predicted results. Patients in the high-risk group received systematic lymphadenectomy in stage I and sentinel lymph node (SLN) dissection in stage II. The efficiency of lymph node metastasis (LNM) detection rates was compared between stage I and stage II cases. Precise lymph node biopsy algorithm was also constructed based on the outcomes of stage II., Results: Overall, 43 patients, 28 in stage I and 15 in stage II, were included in the study. No recurrence or death cases had been found within follow-up terms. Based on the difference in the detection efficiency of LNM (p > 0.05), there was no difference between two stages. Thus, systematic lymphadenectomy and SLN biopsy provided similar success rates. The location of tumor site was also important for deciding whether pelvic or para-aortic SLN should be sampled for LNM., Conclusions: Precise SLN biopsy for EC confined to the uterus showed comparable LNM detection rate as systematic lymphadenectomy. Introduction: Although glymphatic function is involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD), its potential for predicting the pathological and clinical progression of AD and its sequential association with core AD biomarkers is poorly understood., Methods: Whole-brain glymphatic activity was measured by diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) in participants with AD dementia (n = 47), mild cognitive impairment (MCI; n = 137), and normal controls (n = 235) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative., Results: ALPS index was significantly lower in AD dementia than in MCI or controls. Lower ALPS index was significantly associated with faster changes in amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) burden and AD signature region of interest volume, higher risk of amyloid-positive transition and clinical progression, and faster rates of amyloid- and neurodegeneration-related cognitive decline. Furthermore, the associations of the ALPS index with cognitive decline were fully mediated by amyloid PET and brain atrophy., Discussion: Glymphatic failure may precede amyloid pathology, and predicts amyloid deposition, neurodegeneration, and clinical progression in AD., Highlights: The analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS) index is reduced in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia, prodromal AD, and preclinical AD. Background: Chronic renal failure (CRF) patients are predisposed to arrhythmias, while the detailed mechanisms are unclear. We hypothesized the chronic inflammatory state of CRF patients may lead to cardiac sympathetic remodeling, increasing the incidence of ventricular arrhythmia (VA) and sudden cardiac death. And explored the role of atorvastatin and etanercept in this process., Methods: A total of 48 rats were randomly divided into sham operation group (Sham group), CRF group, CRF + atorvastatin group (CRF + statin group), and CRF + etanercept group (CRF + rhTNFR-Fc group). Sympathetic nerve remodeling was assessed by immunofluorescence of growth-associated protein 43 (GAP-43) and tyrosine hydroxylase positive area fraction. Electrophysiological testing was performed to assess the incidence of VA by assessing the ventricular effective refractory period and ventricular fibrillation threshold. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1beta were determined by Western blotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay., Results: Echocardiogram showed that compared with the Sham group, left ventricular end-systolic diameter and ventricular weight/body weight ratio were significantly higher in the CRF group. Hematoxylin-eosin and Masson staining indicated that myocardial fibers were broken, disordered, and fibrotic in the CRF group. Western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunofluorescence and electrophysiological examination suggested that compared with the Sham group, GAP-43 and TNF-α proteins were significantly upregulated, GAP-43 and tyrosine hydroxylase positive nerve fiber area was increased, and ventricular fibrillation threshold was significantly decreased in the CRF group. The above effects were inhibited in the CRF + statin group and the CRF + rhTNFR-Fc group., Conclusions: In CRF rats, TNF-α was upregulated, cardiac sympathetic remodeling was more severe, and the nephrogenic cardiac sympathetic remodeling existed. Compensatory Health Beliefs (CHBs), the notion that healthy behaviors can offset the negative effects of unhealthy actions, have been widely explored in Western contexts. Yet, their relevance within the Chinese cultural milieu remains underexplored. The primary objective of this research was to develop and validate a Chinese version of the CHBs scale (CHBs-C), addressing the gap in the literature regarding the applicability of CHBs within the Chinese cultural context. A multi-stage translation (from English to Chinese) was first completed, and exploratory factor analysis was conducted ( n = 476), yielding the 14-item scale (CHBs-C scale). Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to assess the validity, and the 2-week test-retest reliability, internal consistency and convergent validity of the scale were also assessed ( n = 308). Predict validity was verified through testing the relationships between CHBs and health behaviors and habits ( n = 274). Factor analysis showed a different factor structure in Chinese context, with only one factor identical to the original version. The fitness index of the new factor structure was good. However, while the scale exhibited acceptable internal consistency and high test-retest reliability, its convergent validity and predictive validity was found to be limited on a general level. Despite this, significant correlations at the subscale level were identified, highlighting nuanced interactions between CHBs and specific health behaviors within the Chinese population. Background: Competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) is an innovative way of gene expression modulation, which plays a crucial part in neoplasia. However, the intricacy and behavioral characteristics of the ceRNA network in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain dismal., Aim: To establish a cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A)-related ceRNA network and recognize potential prognostic indicators for HCC., Methods: The mutation landscape of CDKN2A in HCC was first explored using the cBioPortal database. Differential expression analysis was implemented between CDKN2A high and CDKN2A low expression HCC samples. The targeted microRNAs were predicted by lncBasev3.0, and the targeted mRNAs were predicted by miRDB, and Targetscan database. The univariate and multivariate analysis were utilized to identify independent prognostic indicators., Results: CDKN2A was frequently mutated and deleted in HCC. The single-cell RNA-sequencing analysis revealed that CDKN2A participated in cell cycle pathways. The CDKN2A-related ceRNA network-growth arrest specific 5 (GAS5)/miR-25-3p/SRY-box transcription factor 11 (SOX11) was successfully established. GAS5 was recognized as an independent prognostic biomarker, whose overexpression was correlated with a poor prognosis in HCC patients. The association between GAS5 expression and methylation, immune infiltration was explored. Besides, traditional Chinese medicine effective components targeting GAS5 were obtained., Conclusion: This CDKN2A-related ceRNA network provides innovative insights into the molecular mechanism of HCC formation and progression. Csn5 is subunit 5 of the COP9 signalosome (CSN), but the mechanism by which it strictly controls the pathogenicity of pathogenic fungi through autophagy remains unclear. Here, we found that Csn5 deficiency attenuated pathogenicity and enhanced autophagy in Magnaporthe oryzae. MoCSN5 knockout led to overubiquitination and overdegradation of MoTor (the core protein of the TORC1 complex [target of rapamycin]) thereby promoted autophagy. In addition, we identified MoCsn5 as a new interactor of MoAtg6. Atg6 was found to be ubiquitinated through linkage with lysine 48 (K48) in cells, which is necessary for infection-associated autophagy in pathogenic fungi. K48-ubiquitination of Atg6 enhanced its degradation and thereby inhibited autophagic activity. Our experimental results indicated that MoCsn5 promoted K48-ubiquitination of MoAtg6, which reduced the MoAtg6 protein content and thus inhibited autophagy. Aberrant ubiquitination and autophagy in ΔMocsn5 led to pleiotropic defects in the growth, development, stress resistance, and pathogenicity of M. oryzae. Introduction: The objective of this study is to investigate the incremental value of amyloid positron emission tomography (Aβ-PET) in a tertiary memory clinic setting in China., Methods: A total of 1073 patients were offered Aβ-PET using 18 F-florbetapir. The neurologists determined a suspected etiology (Alzheimer's disease [AD] or non-AD) with a percentage estimate of their confidence and medication prescription both before and after receiving the Aβ-PET results., Results: After disclosure of the Aβ-PET results, etiological diagnoses changed in 19.3% of patients, and diagnostic confidence increased from 69.3% to 85.6%. Amyloid PET results led to a change of treatment plan in 36.5% of patients. Compared to the late-onset group, the early-onset group had a more frequent change in diagnoses and a higher increase in diagnostic confidence., Discussion: Aβ-PET has significant impacts on the changes of diagnoses and management in Chinese population. Early-onset cases are more likely to benefit from Aβ-PET than late-onset cases., Highlights: Amyloid PET contributes to diagnostic changes and its confidence in Chinese patients. This study conducted an analysis of the variations in nitrogen metabolism pathways within constructed wetlands (CWs) using zeolite (CW-Z), ceramsite (CW-C), and lava (CW-L) under high concentration sulfamethoxazole (SMX) stress. The introduction of SMX hindered the formation of hydrogen bonds on the substrate surfaces; however, these surfaces still maintained a dense and thick biofilm. CW-Z exhibited superior removal efficiencies for ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 - -N) compared to CW-C and CW-L, with removal rates of 92.54 ± 2.88 % and 89.39 ± 6.74 %, respectively. Interestingly, the proportion of genes involved in nitrification, denitrification and nitrate reduction genes in CW-C (36.05 %) were higher than that in CW-C (29.81 %) and CW-L (29.70 %) but the interactions among nitrogen functional bacteria in CW-Z were much more complex. Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of Rivaroxaban in preventing catheter related thrombosis (CRT) in patients with breast cancer who are undergoing central venous catheter chemotherapy, and provide basis for making standardized prevention and treatment strategies. Methods: In this research, a prospective cohort study was adopted, and breast cancer patients who received central venous catheter chemotherapy in Sanhuan Cancer Hospital during September 2020 to March 2022 were selected as a treatment group to take the rivaroxaban anticoagulation therapy with 10 mg.po.qd for one month. The control group got no preventive anticoagulation therapy. Vascular ultrasound examination was taken to confirm the occurrence of CRT, and a chi-square test was done for comparison the disparity between the groups. Logistic regression was applied to analyze the univariate and multivariate factors for the formation of CRT. Results: In the research, a total of 235 patients were selected, and there were a total of 19 035 days of catheterization with 81 days of catheterization on average. While in the control group, the incidence of CRT was 28.0% (33/118), the incidence of CRT in the treatment group was 20.5% (24/117), the difference was no significant ( P =0.183). Subgroup analysis results showed that the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) was performed in 165 cases with the CRT incidence of 18.2% (30/165) and thrombosis was mostly seen around axillary vein, accounting for 63.3%. Subclavian vein catheterization was performed in 63 cases with the CRT incidence of 39.7% (25/63), and thrombosis was mostly seen around subclavian vein, accounting for 88.0% (22/25). Implantable venous access port was implanted in 7 cases around subclavian vein and internal jugular vein with the CRT incidence of 28.6% (2/7). The patients who developed CRT within 30 days after catheterization accounted for 54.4% (31/57), 22.8% (13/57) in a period during 30 days and 60 days) and 22.8% (13/57) in a period during 60 days and 180 days). The diagnosed CRT patients had been treated with rivaroxaban 15 mg.bid.po for 3 months. During the 3 months, 100.0% of the thrombosis waned, 71.9% (41/57) of the thrombosis waned within 30 days, 19.3% (11/57) in a period during 30 and 60days and 8.8% (5/57) in a period during 60 days and 90 days. Univariate and multivariate analysis indicated that the risk of CRT in subclavian vein catheterization was higher than that in PICC, respectively ( OR =2.898, 95% CI: 1.386-6.056 P =0.005), and the type of catheterization was an independent factor for the formation of thrombosis. Safety analysis result showed that in the prevention of CRT, rivaroxaban treatment did not induce drug-related bleeding, liver function damage, bone marrow suppression or any other side effects. While CRT diagnosed patients were treated with anticoagulation, they kept the central venous catheter, and the infusion was smooth. These patients all finished the anti-tumor treatment as planned, and no abnormalities like new thrombosis or pulmonary embolism were observed. Conclusions: In the mid-term analysis, the proportion of Rivaroxaban in preventing anticoagulant CRT decreases, but it don't reach statistical significance. The sample size should be further increased for observation. Rivaroxaban is proved effective and very safe in the treatment of CRT, and does not affect the concurrent chemotherapy. Medical personnel should carry out the policy of "early prevention, early detection and early treatment" for CRT so as to improve the patients' quality of life.

Background: This article aimed to discuss the efficacy and safety of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EDCR) versus external dacryocystorhinostomy (EX-DCR) for the treatment of dacryocystitis by meta-analysis., Methods: All randomized controlled trials that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were collected by searching the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang, from the establishment of the database to June 2023. Meta-analysis was performed using Stata 17.0 software and review manager 5.4 software. In the collected trials, the observation group was treated with EDCR, whereas the control group was treated with EX-DCR., Results: A total of 10 studies involving 969 patients were included in this analysis. There was a similar surgical success rate in the treatment of dacryocystitis between the 2 groups (RR = 1.021, 95% CI [0. 803, 1.297], P = 0. 865). However, compared with the control group, patients in the observation group had a higher total effective rate of treatment (RR = 1. 195, 95% CI [1. 063, 1.343], P = .003), and shorter operative time (WMD = -23.640, 95% CI [-35.533, -11.747], P < .001), and less intraoperative blood loss (WMD = -50.797, 95% CI [-80.339, -21.255], P = .001), shorter length of hospital stays (WMD = -4.570, 95% CI [-5.992, -3.148], P < .001), and lower incidence of adverse events (RR = 0.295, 95% CI [0.173, 0.504], P < .001)., Conclusion: EDCR is an effective and safe surgical procedure for the treatment of dacryocystitis and can be used as an alternative to EX-DCR., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose., (Copyright © 2024 the Author(s). Herein, a Sc(OTf) 3 -catalyzed (3+2) annulation of 2-indolylmethanols with propargylic alcohols is reported. The reaction proceeds via a Friedel-Crafts-type allenylation/5-exo-annulation cascade. In the reaction, 2-indolylmethanol is used as a three-carbon synthon, and propargyl alcohol is used as a two-carbon synthon. This method provides a direct and high-yield pathway for synthetically useful cyclopenta[ b ]indoles. In general, the method features easily accessible substrates with broad scope and generality, the formation of multiple bonds with high efficiency, and easy scale-up.

Background: To better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of patellar fractures, MRI was utilized to identify the imaging signs of various types of patellar fractures., Methods: A retrospective study was performed using MRI images of 52 patients with patellar fractures. Observing the development of patellar and femoral morphology and the imaging manifestations of different fracture types, such as fracture displacement, and damage to accessory ligaments, tendons, and meniscus, type of joint cavity effusion, and damage to surrounding accessory bones were identified., Results: There were 21 tangential fractures (40.4%), 8 transverse fractures (15.4%), 8 longitudinal fractures (15.4%), 4 oblique fractures (7.7%), and 11 comminuted fractures (21.2%) among the 52 patients with patellar fracture. Tangential fractures begin at a younger age than the other four forms of fractures. When tangential fractures were compared to other types of fractures, medial patellar retinaculum and anterior and posterior cruciate ligament injuries were statistically significant (P< 0.05). The detection rate of trochlear dysplasia, type II and type III patellar was higher in patients with tangential fractures than in other fractures., Conclusions: Tangential fractures are less common to cause anterior and posterior cruciate ligament injuries than other types of fractures, but they are more likely to cause medial patellar retinaculum injuries., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Hua et al. Previous in vitro and post-mortem studies have reported the role of inflammation in neurodegenerative disorders. However, the association between inflammation and brain structure in vivo and the transcriptome-driven functional basis with relevance to neurodegenerative disorders remains elusive. The aim of the present study is to identify the association among inflammation, brain structure, and neurodegenerative disorders at genetic and transcriptomic levels. Genetic variants associated with inflammatory cytokines were selected from the latest and largest genome-wide association studies of European ancestry. Neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and brain structure imaging measures were selected as the outcomes. Two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses were conducted to identify the causal associations. Single-nucleus transcriptome data of the occipitotemporal cortex was further analyzed to identify the differential expressed genes in AD, which were tested for biological processes and protein interaction network. MR analysis indicated that genetically predicted TREM2 and sTREM2 were significantly associated with AD (TREM2: z-score = -9.088, p-value = 1.02 × 10 -19 ; sTREM2: z-score = -7.495, p-value = 6.61 × 10 -14 ). The present study found no evidence to support the causal associations between other inflammatory cytokines and the risks of AD, PD, ALS, or DLB. Genetically predicted TREM2 was significantly associated with the cortical thickness of inferior temporal (z-score = -4.238, p-value = 2.26 × 10 -5 ) and pole temporal (z-score = -4.549, p-value = 5.40 × 10 -6 ). In the occipitotemporal cortex samples, microglia were the main source of TREM2 gene and showed increasing expression of genes associated with inflammation and immunity. The present study has leveraged genetic and transcriptomic data to identify the association among TREM2, temporal lobe, and AD and the underlying cellular and molecular basis, thus providing a new perspective on the role of TREM2 in AD and insights into the complex associations among inflammation, brain structure, and neurodegenerative disorders, particularly AD., (© 2023. Herein, the preparation process, morphology, structure, and magnetic properties of La 1.85 Sr 0.15 CuO 4 (LSCO) cobweb-like nanofibers are reported. LSCO nanofibers with a regular grain size distribution are successfully prepared via electrospinning, followed by calcination. We conducted morphology analysis and elemental distribution using electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. Additionally, magnetic property testing was performed using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) to confirm the superconducting properties of the samples. Interestingly, our samples exhibited a superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of 25.21 K, which showed some disparity compared to similar works. Furthermore, we observed a ferromagnetic response at low temperatures in the superconducting nanofibers. We attribute these phenomena to the effects generated by surface states of nanoscale superconducting materials.

SO 2 (Sulfur dioxide) is the major precursor to the production of sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ), contributing to acid rain and atmospheric aerosols. Sulfuric acid formed from SO 2 generates light-reflecting sulfate aerosol particles in the atmosphere. This property has prompted recent geoengineering proposals to inject sulfuric acid or its precursors into the Earth's atmosphere to increase the planetary albedo to counteract global warming. SO 2 oxidation in the atmosphere by the hydroxyl radical HO to form HOSO 2 is a key rate-limiting step in the mechanism for forming acid rain. However, the dynamics of the HO + SO 2 → HOSO 2 reaction and its slow rate in the atmosphere are poorly understood to date. Herein, we use photoelectron spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled HOSO 2 - anion to access the neutral HOSO 2 radical near the transition state of the HO + SO 2 reaction. Spectroscopic and dynamic calculations are conducted on the first ab initio-based full-dimensional potential energy surface to interpret the photoelectron spectra of HOSO 2 - and to probe the dynamics of the HO + SO 2 reaction. In addition to the finding of a unique pre-reaction complex (HO⋯SO 2 ) directly connected to the transition state, dynamic calculations reveal that the accessible phase space for the HO + SO 2 → HOSO 2 reaction is extremely narrow, forming a key reaction bottleneck and slowing the reaction rate in the atmosphere, despite the low reaction barrier.
