In electrochemical systems, the structure of electrical double layers (EDLs) near electrode surfaces is crucial for energy conversion and storage functions. While the electrodes in real-world systems are usually heterogeneous, to date the investigation of EDLs is mainly limited to flat model solid surfaces. To bridge this gap, here we image the EDL structure of an ionic liquid-based electrolyte at a heterogeneous graphite electrode using our recently developed electrochemical 3D atomic force microscopy. These interfaces feature the formation of thin, nanoscale adlayer/cluster domains that closely mimic the early-stage solid-electrolyte interphases in many battery systems. We observe multiple discrete layers in the EDL near the flat electrode, which restructures at the heterogeneous interphase sites. Depending on the local size of the interphase clusters, the EDLs exhibit bending, breaking, and/or reconnecting behaviors, likely due to the combined steric and long-range interaction effects. These results shed light on the fundamental structure and reconfiguration mechanism of EDLs at heterogeneous interfaces.

Electrode-electrolyte interfaces are crucial for electrochemical energy conversion and storage. At these interfaces, the liquid electrolytes form electrical double layers (EDLs). However, despite more than a century of active research, the fundamental structure of EDLs remains elusive to date. Experimental characterization and theoretical calculations have both provided insights, yet each method by itself only offers incomplete or inexact information of the multifaceted EDL structure. Here we provide a survey of the mainstream approaches for EDL quantification, with a particular focus on the emerging 3D atomic force microscopy (3D-AFM) imaging which provides real-space atomic-scale EDL structures. To overcome the existing limits of EDL characterization methods, we propose a new approach to integrate 3D-AFM with classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, to enable realistic, precise, and high-throughput determination and prediction of EDL structures. As examples of real-world application, we will discuss the feasibility of using this joint experiment-theory method to unravel the EDL structure at various carbon-based electrodes for supercapacitors, batteries, and electrocatalysis. Looking forward, we believe 3D-AFM, future versions of scanning probe microscopy, and their integration with theory offer promising platforms to profile liquid structures in many electrochemical systems.

Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a powerful analytical method for not only the chemical identification of solid, liquid, and gas species, but also the quantification of their concentration. However, the chemical quantification capability of FTIR is significantly hindered when the analyte is surrounded by a strong IR absorbing medium, such as liquid solutions. To overcome this limit, here we develop an IR fiber microprobe that can be inserted into liquid medium, and obtain full FTIR spectra at points of interest. To benchmark this endoscopic FTIR method, we insert the microprobe into bulk water covering a ZnSe substrate and measure the IR transmittance of water as a function of the probe-substrate distance. The obtained vibrational modes, overall transmittance vs z profiles, quantitative absorption coefficients, and micro z-section IR transmittance spectra are all consistent with the standard IR absorption properties of water. The results pave the way for endoscopic chemical profiling inside bulk liquid solutions, promising for applications in many biological, chemical, and electrochemical systems.

By using the pulsed-laser-ablation technique, we have successfully grown the La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7-\delta}$ thin films with $c$-axis orientation perpendicular to the film surface. X-ray diffraction shows that the (00l) peaks can be well indexed to the La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7-\delta}$ phase. Resistive measurements show that the samples can be tuned from weak insulating to metallic behavior through adjusting the growth conditions. Surprisingly, all curves of $\rho-T$ in the temperature region of 2$\sim$300~K do not show the anomalies corresponding to either the spin density wave or the charge density wave orders as seen in bulk samples. Hall effect measurements show a linear field dependence with the dominant hole charge carriers, but the Hall coefficient $R_{H}=\rho_{xy}/H$ exhibits strong temperature dependence. The magnetoresistance above about 50~K is positive but very weak, indicating the absence of multiband effect. However, a negative magnetoresistance is observed at low temperatures, which shows the delocalization effect. Detailed analysis on the magnetoresistance suggests that the delocalization effect at low temperatures is due to the Kondo-like effect, rather than the Anderson weak localization. Our transport results suggest that, the electronic conduction is fulfilled by the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ orbital with holes as the dominant charge carriers, while the interaction through Hund's coupling with the localized $d_{z^{2}}$ orbital plays an important role in the charge dynamics.

We propose Nodewise Loreg, a nodewise $L_0$-penalized regression method for estimating high-dimensional sparse precision matrices. We establish its asymptotic properties, including convergence rates, support recovery, and asymptotic normality under high-dimensional sub-Gaussian settings. Notably, the Nodewise Loreg estimator is asymptotically unbiased and normally distributed, eliminating the need for debiasing required by Nodewise Lasso. We also develop a desparsified version of Nodewise Loreg, similar to the desparsified Nodewise Lasso estimator. The asymptotic variances of the undesparsified Nodewise Loreg estimator are upper bounded by those of both desparsified Nodewise Loreg and Lasso estimators for Gaussian data, potentially offering more powerful statistical inference. Extensive simulations show that the undesparsified Nodewise Loreg estimator generally outperforms the two desparsified estimators in asymptotic normal behavior. Moreover, Nodewise Loreg surpasses Nodewise Lasso, CLIME, and GLasso in most simulations in terms of matrix norm losses, support recovery, and timing performance. Application to a breast cancer gene expression dataset further demonstrates Nodewise Loreg's superiority over the three $L_1$-norm based methods.

2D face recognition encounters challenges in unconstrained environments due to varying illumination, occlusion, and pose. Recent studies focus on RGB-D face recognition to improve robustness by incorporating depth information. However, collecting sufficient paired RGB-D training data is expensive and time-consuming, hindering wide deployment. In this work, we first construct a diverse depth dataset generated by 3D Morphable Models for depth model pre-training. Then, we propose a domain-independent pre-training framework that utilizes readily available pre-trained RGB and depth models to separately perform face recognition without needing additional paired data for retraining. To seamlessly integrate the two distinct networks and harness the complementary benefits of RGB and depth information for improved accuracy, we propose an innovative Adaptive Confidence Weighting (ACW). This mechanism is designed to learn confidence estimates for each modality to achieve modality fusion at the score level. Our method is simple and lightweight, only requiring ACW training beyond the backbone models. Experiments on multiple public RGB-D face recognition benchmarks demonstrate state-of-the-art performance surpassing previous methods based on depth estimation and feature fusion, validating the efficacy of our approach., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

In recent years, large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated notable success across various tasks, but the trustworthiness of LLMs is still an open problem. One specific threat is the potential to generate toxic or harmful responses. Attackers can craft adversarial prompts that induce harmful responses from LLMs. In this work, we pioneer a theoretical foundation in LLMs security by identifying bias vulnerabilities within the safety fine-tuning and design a black-box jailbreak method named DRA (Disguise and Reconstruction Attack), which conceals harmful instructions through disguise and prompts the model to reconstruct the original harmful instruction within its completion. We evaluate DRA across various open-source and closed-source models, showcasing state-of-the-art jailbreak success rates and attack efficiency. Notably, DRA boasts a 91.1% attack success rate on OpenAI GPT-4 chatbot.

The pressure-induced color change in the nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride has triggered extensive discussions about the underlying physics. Here, we study the optical response of LuH$_{2 \pm x}$N$_{y}$ in a broad frequency range at ambient pressure and its evolution with pressure in the visible spectral range. The broad-band optical spectra at ambient pressure reveal a Drude component associated with intra-band electronic transitions and two Lorentz components (L1 and L2) arising from inter-band electronic transitions. The application of pressure causes a spectral weight transfer from L1 to the Drude component, leading to a blue shift of the plasma edge in the reflectivity spectrum alongside a reduction of the high-frequency reflectivity. Our results suggest that the pressure-induced color change in LuH$_{2 \pm x}$N$_{y}$ is closely related to the transformation between intra- and inter-band electronic transitions, providing new insights into the mechanism of the pressure-induced color change in LuH$_{2 \pm x}$N$_{y}$., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures. Although face recognition has made impressive progress in recent years, we ignore the racial bias of the recognition system when we pursue a high level of accuracy. Previous work found that for different races, face recognition networks focus on different facial regions, and the sensitive regions of darker-skinned people are much smaller. Based on this discovery, we propose a new de-bias method based on gradient attention, called Gradient Attention Balance Network (GABN). Specifically, we use the gradient attention map (GAM) of the face recognition network to track the sensitive facial regions and make the GAMs of different races tend to be consistent through adversarial learning. This method mitigates the bias by making the network focus on similar facial regions. In addition, we also use masks to erase the Top-N sensitive facial regions, forcing the network to allocate its attention to a larger facial region. This method expands the sensitive region of darker-skinned people and further reduces the gap between GAM of darker-skinned people and GAM of Caucasians. Flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) is an emerging technology enabled through the integration of advanced semiconductor devices and 3D printing technology. It unlocks tremendous market potential by realizing low-cost flexible circuits and systems that can be conformally integrated into various applications. However, the operating frequencies of most reported FHE systems are relatively low. It is also worth to note that reported FHE systems have been limited to relatively simple design concept (since complex systems will impose challenges in aspects such as multilayer interconnections, printing materials, and bonding layers). Here, we report a fully 3D-printed flexible four-layer millimeter-wave Doppler radar (i.e., a millimeter-wave FHE system). The sensing performance and flexibility of the 3D-printed radar are characterized and validated by general field tests and bending tests, respectively. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of developing fully 3D-printed high-frequency multilayer FHE, which can be conformally integrated into irregular surfaces (e.g., vehicle bumpers) for applications such as vehicle radars and wearable electronics.

Although deep learning has significantly improved Face Recognition (FR), dramatic performance deterioration may occur when processing Low Resolution (LR) faces. To alleviate this, approaches based on unified feature space are proposed with the sacrifice under High Resolution (HR) circumstances. To deal with the huge domain gap between HR and LR domains and achieve the best on both domains, we first took a closer look at the impacts of several resolution augmentations and then analyzed the difficulty of LR samples from the perspective of the model gradient produced by different resolution samples. Besides, we also find that the introduction of some resolutions could help the learning of lower resolutions. Based on these, we divide the LR samples into three difficulties according to the resolution and propose a more effective Multi-Resolution Augmentation. Then, due to the rapidly increasing domain gap as the resolution decreases, we carefully design a novel and effective metric loss based on a LogExp distance function that provides decent gradients to prevent oscillation near the convergence point or tolerance to small distance errors; it could also dynamically adjust the penalty for errors in different dimensions, allowing for more optimization of dimensions with large errors. Combining these two insights, our model could learn more general knowledge in a wide resolution range of images and balanced results can be achieved by our extremely simple framework. Moreover, the augmentations and metrics are the cornerstones of LRFR, so our method could be considered a new baseline for the LRFR task. Experiments on the LRFR datasets: SCface, XQLFW, and large-scale LRFR dataset: TinyFace demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods, while the degradation on HRFR datasets is significantly reduced., Comment: AAAI 2023 R2HCAI Workshop
