15. High‐Performance All‐Printed Flexible Micro‐Supercapacitors with Hierarchical Encapsulation.

Abstract

Printed micro‐supercapacitors (MSCs) have shown broad prospect in flexible and wearable electronics. Most of previous studies focused on printing the electrochemically active materials paying less attention to other key components like current collectors and electrolytes. This study presents an all‐printing strategy to fabricate in‐plane flexible and substrate‐free MSCs with hierarchical encapsulation. This new type of "all‐in‐one" MSC is constructed by encapsulating the in‐plane interdigital current collectors and electrodes within the polyvinyl‐alcohol‐based hydrogel electrolyte via sequential printing. The bottom electrolyte layer of this fully printed MSCs helps protect the device from the limitation of conventional substrate, showing excellent flexibility. The MSCs maintain a high capacitance retention of 96.84% even in a completely folded state. An optimal electrochemical performance can be achieved by providing ample and shorter transport paths for ions. The MSCs using commercial activated carbon as the active material are endowed with a high specific areal capacitance of 1892.90 mF cm−2 at a current density of 0.3 mA cm−2, and an outstanding volumetric energy density of 9.20 mWh cm−3 at a volumetric power density of 6.89 mW cm−3. For demonstration, a thermo‐hygrometer is stably powered by five MSCs which are connected in series and wrapped onto a glass rod. This low‐cost and versatile all‐printing strategy is believed to diversify the application fields of MSCs with high capacitance and excellent flexibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

17. Stress Prerelease‐Driven Dendrite‐Free Growth Mechanism to Stabilize Zn Anodes.

Abstract

The mechanical properties of zinc anodes in rechargeable zinc‐based batteries are neglected. Indeed, electrode stress in zinc crystallization (ESZC) contributes to excess chemical potential under enormous deposition stress, severely impacting zinc crystal patterns and reaction kinetics. Herein, a stress prerelease mechanism to minimize ESZC and drive dendrite‐free zinc anode growth is proposed. The internal stress of the freestanding electrode is prereleased by full‐contact soft‐substrate constraints during fabrication. Under the compression of crystallization stress, the freestanding electrode rapidly deforms and self‐releases into microstrains to reduce ESZC. Furthermore, the weakening of ESZC under the stress‐prerelease mechanism is modified to the actual reaction kinetics, which establishes a direct link between electrode stress and zinc deposition pattern. The processes of crystalline stress transfer and self‐release under the stress prerelease mechanism are revealed using in situ strain monitors. Stress‐prereleased freestanding electrodes drive uniform zinc nucleation and subsequent radial diffusion, guiding Zn epitaxial growth on the nanofibers surface. During repeated deposition/stripping, the stress prerelease mechanism steadily diminishes the possibility of dendrite growth and guarantees the stable operation of dendrite‐free zinc anodes. The stress prereleased freestanding electrodes induce symmetric and full cells to achieve stable and excellent performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Organic Nitrate Additive for High‐Rate and Large‐Capacity Lithium Metal Anode in Carbonate Electrolyte.

Abstract

Lithium nitrate has been widely used to improve the interfacial stability of Li metal anode in ether electrolyte. However, the low solubility limits its application in carbonate electrolytes for high‐voltage Li metal batteries. Herein, nitrated polycaprolactone (PCL‐ONO2), which is prepared via the acylation of polycaprolactone diol (PCL‐diol) followed by the grafting of nitrate group, has been proposed as an electrolyte additive to introduce high‐concentration NO3− into carbonate electrolytes for the first time. The theoretical calculations and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling demonstrate that the PCL‐ONO2 additive preferentially reacts with Li metal and in situ constructs a stable dual‐layered solid electrolyte interphase film, presenting an inner nitride‐rich layer and an outer flexible PCL‐based layer on the surface of Li metal anode. As a result, the Li metal anode delivers an impressive long‐term cycling performance over 1400 h at an elevated area capacity of 10.0 mAh cm−2 and an ultrahigh current density of 10.0 mA cm−2 in the Li symmetrical cells. Moreover, the PCL‐ONO2 additive enables the full cells constructed by coupling high‐loading LiFePO4 (20.0 mg cm−2) or LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3 (16.5 mg cm−2) cathode and thin Li metal anode (≈50 µm) to demonstrate greatly improved cycling stability and rate capability.
