The traditional machine learning models to solve optimal power flow (OPF) are mostly trained for a given power network and lack generalizability to today's power networks with varying topologies and growing plug-and-play distributed energy resources (DERs). In this paper, we propose DeepOPF-U, which uses one unified deep neural network (DNN) to solve alternating-current (AC) OPF problems in different power networks, including a set of power networks that is successively expanding. Specifically, we design elastic input and output layers for the vectors of given loads and OPF solutions with varying lengths in different networks. The proposed method, using a single unified DNN, can deal with different and growing numbers of buses, lines, loads, and DERs. Decarbonizing electric grids is a crucial global endeavor in the pursuit of carbon neutrality. Taking carbon emissions from generation into account when pricing electricity usage is an essential way to achieve this goal. However, such pricing is not trivial due to the requirements of an effective electricity market, such as maintaining budget balance, providing incentives to motivate participants to follow the dispatch schedule, and minimizing the impact on affected parties compared to when they were in the traditional electricity market. Although existing joint electricity-carbon pricing mechanisms have shown promising performance in reducing emissions in power networks, they can hardly meet all the requirements. This paper proposes a novel joint electricity-carbon pricing mechanism based on primal-dual optimality condition-enabled transformation. An algorithm for determining the critical market parameter is developed. The proposed pricing mechanism is proven to possess all the desired properties, including budget balance, individual rationality, dispatch-following incentive compatibility, and truthful-bidding incentive compatibility. These properties ensure the proposed mechanism can incentivize market participants to achieve carbon-aware social optimum in a self-organized and sustainable way. Linear approximation commonly used in solving alternating-current optimal power flow (AC-OPF) simplifies the system models but incurs accumulated voltage errors in large power networks. Such errors will make the primal-dual type gradient algorithms converge to the solutions at which the power networks may be exposed to the risk of voltage violation. In this paper, we improve a recent hierarchical OPF algorithm that rested on primal-dual gradients evaluated with a linearized distribution power flow model. Specifically, we propose a more accurate gradient evaluation method based on a three-phase unbalanced nonlinear distribution power flow model to mitigate the errors arising from model linearization. The resultant gradients feature a blocked structure that enables us to further develop an improved hierarchical primal-dual algorithm to solve the OPF problem. Numerical results on the IEEE $123$-bus test feeder and a $4,518$-node test feeder show that the proposed method can enhance the overall voltage safety while achieving comparable computational efficiency with the linearized algorithm.

The wide deployment of distributed renewable energy sources and electric vehicles can help mitigate climate crisis. This necessitates new business models in the power sector to hedge against uncertainties while imposing a strong coupling between the connected power and transportation networks. To address these challenges, this paper first proposes an energy sharing mechanism considering AC power network constraints to encourage local energy exchange in the power system. Under the proposed mechanism, all prosumers play a generalized Nash game. We prove that the energy sharing equilibrium exists and is socially optimal. Furthermore, a hierarchical game is built to characterize the interactions both inside and between the power and transportation systems. Externally, the two systems are engaged in a generalized Nash game because traffic flows serve as electric demands by charging behaviors, and each driver pays the energy sharing price for charging. The hierarchical game is then converted into a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) with the help of optimality conditions and linearization techniques. In this paper, we revisit the problem of Differentially Private Stochastic Convex Optimization (DP-SCO) in Euclidean and general $\ell_p^d$ spaces. Specifically, we focus on three settings that are still far from well understood: (1) DP-SCO over a constrained and bounded (convex) set in Euclidean space; (2) unconstrained DP-SCO in $\ell_p^d$ space; (3) DP-SCO with heavy-tailed data over a constrained and bounded set in $\ell_p^d$ space. For problem (1), for both convex and strongly convex loss functions, we propose methods whose outputs could achieve (expected) excess population risks that are only dependent on the Gaussian width of the constraint set rather than the dimension of the space. Moreover, we also show the bound for strongly convex functions is optimal up to a logarithmic factor. Power distribution networks are approaching their voltage stability boundaries due to the severe voltage violations and the inadequate reactive power reserves caused by the increasing renewable generations and dynamic loads. In the broad endeavor to resolve this concern, we focus on enhancing voltage stability through stochastic distribution network reconfiguration (SDNR), which optimizes the (radial) topology of a distribution network under uncertain generations and loads. We propose a deep learning method to solve this computationally challenging problem. Specifically, we build a convolutional neural network model to predict the relevant voltage stability index from the SDNR decisions. Then we integrate this prediction model into successive branch reduction algorithms to reconfigure a radial network with optimized performance in terms of power loss reduction and voltage stability enhancement. Numerical results on two IEEE network models verify the significance of enhancing voltage stability through SDNR and the computational efficiency of the proposed method.

This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based approach for optimal transient frequency control in power systems with stability and safety guarantees. Building on Lyapunov stability theory and safety-critical control, we derive sufficient conditions on the distributed controller design that ensure the stability and transient frequency safety of the closed-loop system. Our idea of distributed dynamic budget assignment makes these conditions less conservative than those in recent literature, so that they can impose less stringent restrictions on the search space of control policies. We construct neural network controllers that parameterize such control policies and use reinforcement learning to train an optimal one. Simulations on the IEEE 39-bus network illustrate the guaranteed stability and safety properties of the controller along with its significantly improved optimality.

We propose an improved successive branch reduction (SBR) method to solve stochastic distribution network reconfiguration (SDNR), a mixed-integer program that is known to be computationally challenging. First, for a special distribution network with a single redundant branch, we propose an improved design for a one-stage SBR algorithm in the literature to incorporate uncertain renewable generations and loads. Based on solving stochastic optimal power flow, the improved algorithm identifies and searches through a small set of candidate branches, from which it determines the optimal branch to open and obtains a radial network with the minimum expected operational cost. Then, for a general network with multiple redundant branches, we design a heuristic two-stage SBR algorithm based on a close-and-open procedure that iteratively runs the proposed one-stage SBR algorithm. Numerical results on the IEEE 33-bus and 123-bus distribution network models verify the proposed method in terms of optimality and computational efficiency.

Existing algorithms to solve alternating-current optimal power flow (AC-OPF) often exploit linear approximations to simplify system models and accelerate computations. In this paper, we improve a recent hierarchical OPF algorithm, which rested on primal-dual gradients evaluated in a linearized distribution power flow model. Specifically, we identify a risk of voltage violation arising from the model linearization, and propose a more accurate gradient evaluation method to eliminate that risk. We further develop a hierarchical primal-dual algorithm to solve OPF based on the proposed gradient evaluation method. Numerical results on IEEE networks show that our algorithm can enhance voltage safety with satisfactory computational efficiency.

In this paper, we propose an optimal control-estimation architecture for distribution networks, which jointly solves the optimal power flow (OPF) problem and static state estimation (SE) problem through an online gradient-based feedback algorithm. The main objective is to enable a fast and timely interaction between the optimal controllers and state estimators with limited sensor measurements. First, convergence and optimality of the proposed algorithm are analytically established. Then, the proposed gradient-based algorithm is modified by introducing statistical information of the inherent estimation and linearization errors for an improved and robust performance of the online control decisions. Overall, the proposed method eliminates the traditional separation of control and operation, where control and estimation usually operate at distinct layers and different time-scales. Hence, it enables a computationally affordable, efficient and robust online operational framework for distribution networks under time-varying settings.

As the number of prosumers with distributed energy resources (DERs) grows, the conventional centralized operation scheme may suffer from conflicting interests, privacy concerns, and incentive inadequacy. In this paper, we propose an energy sharing mechanism to address the above challenges. It takes into account network constraints and fairness among prosumers. In the proposed energy sharing market, all prosumers play a generalized Nash game. The market equilibrium is proved to have nice features in a large market or when it is a variational equilibrium. To deal with the possible market failure, inefficiency, or instability in general cases, we introduce a price regulation policy to avoid market power exploitation. The improved energy sharing mechanism with price regulation can guarantee existence and uniqueness of a socially near-optimal market equilibrium. Some advantageous properties are proved, such as prosumer's individual rationality, a sharing price structure similar to the locational marginal price, and the tendency towards social optimum with an increasing number of prosumers. For implementation, a practical bidding algorithm is developed with convergence condition. Distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution networks can be aggregated as a virtual power plant (VPP) for transmission-level operations. A critical challenge for such coordination is the complexity of the AC-feasible power transfer region between a VPP and the transmission system at their point of common coupling. To overcome this challenge, this paper develops a characterization method for such regions. The proposed method constructs linear constraints to inner-approximate the AC-feasible power transfer regions. To guarantee AC-feasibility, the parameters in these constraints are determined by applying the Brouwer fixed point theorem to the second-order Taylor expansion of the nonlinear Dist-Flow equations. Based on the power transfer regions characterized with our method, a transmission-level operation problem with VPP participation is formulated and solved through big-M linearization. The proposed methods are verified by numerical experiments in the IEEE 33-bus and IEEE 136-bus test systems.

A virtual power plant (VPP) facilitates the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) for the transmission-level operation. A challenge in operating a VPP is to characterize the cost function over its feasible power transfer region under DERs' uncertainties. To address this challenge, a characterization method is presented in this paper for the intraday operation of a VPP based on the concepts of nonanticipativity and robustness to DERs' uncertainties. The characterization stems from designing a second-order cone programming (SOCP) problem, based on which a feasible power transfer region across all time periods is constructed by exploring boundary points at each time period and establishing time coupling constraints. Furthermore, a cost function over the feasible power transfer region is formulated as a convex piecewise surface whose breakpoints are obtained by solving SOCP problems, together with a constant compensation cost from a linear programming problem. Finally, to alleviate the heavy computational burden brought by numerous DERs, an approximation method is presented by identifying the critical DERs whose uncertainties have dominant impacts. The effectiveness of the presented methods is verified by the numerical experiments in a 3-bus system and the IEEE 136-bus system.

The concept of dispatchable region is useful in quantifying how much renewable generation power the system can handle. In this paper, we aim to provide an improved dispatchable region approximation method in distribution networks. First, based on the nonlinear Dist-Flow model, an optimization problem that minimizes the sum of slack variables is formulated to describe the dispatchable region. The nonconvexity caused by alternating-current (AC) power flow constraints makes it intractable. To deal with this issue, the problem is relaxed to a second-order cone program (SOCP) whose strong dual problem is derived. Then, an SOCP-based projection algorithm is developed to construct a convex polytopic approximation. We prove that the proposed algorithm can generate the accurate SOCP-relaxed dispatchable region under certain conditions. Furthermore, a heuristic method is proposed to approximately remove the regions that make the SOCP relaxation inexact. The final region obtained is the difference of several convex sets and can be nonconvex. Thus, the proposed approach may provide a better approximation of the actually nonconvex dispatchable region than previous work that could construct convex sets only. The development of distributed generation technology is endowing consumers the ability to produce energy and transforming them into "prosumers". This transformation shall improve energy efficiency and pave the way to a low-carbon future. However, it also exerts critical challenges on system operations, such as the wasted backups for volatile renewable generation and the difficulty to predict behavior of prosumers with conflicting interests and privacy concerns. The conventionally independent power, water, and heating networks are becoming more tightly connected, which motivates their joint optimal energy scheduling to improve the overall efficiency of an integrated energy system. However, such a joint optimization is known as a challenging problem with complex network constraints and couplings of electric, hydraulic, and thermal models that are nonlinear and nonconvex. We formulate an optimal power-water-heat flow (OPWHF) problem and develop a computationally efficient heuristic to solve it. The proposed heuristic decomposes OPWHF into subproblems, which are iteratively solved via convex relaxation and convex-concave procedure. Simulation results validate that the proposed framework can improve operational flexibility and social welfare of the integrated system, wherein the water and heating networks respond as virtual energy storage to time-varying energy prices and solar photovoltaic generation. Moreover, we perform sensitivity analysis to compare two modes of heating network control: by flow rate and by temperature. Distribution grid agents are obliged to exchange and disclose their states explicitly to neighboring regions to enable distributed optimal power flow dispatch. However, the states contain sensitive information of individual agents, such as voltage and current measurements. These measurements can be inferred by adversaries, such as other participating agents or eavesdroppers. To address the issue, we propose a privacy-preserving distributed optimal power flow (OPF) algorithm based on partially homomorphic encryption (PHE). First of all, we exploit the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to solve the OPF in a distributed fashion. In this way, the dual update of ADMM can be encrypted by PHE. We further relax the augmented term of the primal update of ADMM with the $\ell_1$-norm regularization. In addition, we transform the relaxed ADMM with the $\ell_1$-norm regularization to a semidefinite program (SDP), and prove that this transformation is exact. The SDP can be solved locally with only the sign messages from neighboring agents, which preserves the privacy of the primal update. At last, we strictly prove the privacy preservation guarantee of the proposed algorithm. The increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the distribution networks has turned the conventionally passive load buses into active buses that can provide grid services for the transmission system. To take advantage of the DERs in the distribution networks, this letter formulates a transmission-and-distribution (T&D) systems co-optimization problem that achieves economic dispatch at the transmission level and optimal voltage regulation at the distribution level by leveraging large generators and DERs. A primal-dual gradient algorithm is proposed to solve this optimization problem jointly for T&D systems, and a distributed market-based equivalent of the gradient algorithm is used for practical implementation. The results are corroborated by numerical examples with the IEEE 39-Bus system connected with 7 different distribution networks.

This paper considers a wireless network with a base station (BS) conducting timely status updates to multiple clients via adaptive non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)/orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Specifically, the BS is able to adaptively switch between NOMA and OMA for the downlink transmission to optimize the information freshness of the network, characterized by the Age of Information (AoI) metric. If the BS chooses OMA, it can only serve one client within each time slot and should decide which client to serve; if the BS chooses NOMA, it can serve more than one client at the same time and needs to decide the power allocated to the served clients. For the simple two-client case, we formulate a Markov Decision Process (MDP) problem and develop the optimal policy for the BS to decide whether to use NOMA or OMA for each downlink transmission based on the instantaneous AoI of both clients. The optimal policy is shown to have a switching-type property with obvious decision switching boundaries. A near-optimal policy with lower computation complexity is also devised. For the more general multi-client scenario, inspired by the proposed near-optimal policy, we formulate a nonlinear optimization problem to determine the optimal power allocated to each client by maximizing the expected AoI drop of the network in each time slot. We resolve the formulated problem by approximating it as a convex optimization problem. We also derive the upper bound of the gap between the approximate convex problem and the original nonlinear, nonconvex problem. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the adopted approximation. With the advent of prosumers, the traditional centralized operation may become impracticable due to computational burden, privacy concerns, and conflicting interests. In this paper, an energy sharing mechanism is proposed to accommodate prosumers' strategic decision-making on their self-production and demand in the presence of capacity constraints. Under this setting, prosumers play a generalized Nash game. We prove main properties of the game: an equilibrium exists and is partially unique; no prosumer is worse off by energy sharing and the price-of-anarchy is 1-O(1/I) where I is the number of prosumers. In particular, the PoA tends to 1 with a growing number of prosumers, meaning that the resulting total cost under the proposed energy sharing approaches social optimum. We prove that the corresponding prosumers' strategies converge to the social optimal solution as well. Finally we propose a bidding process and prove that it converges to the energy sharing equilibrium under mild conditions. The mushrooming of distributed energy resources turns end-users from passive price-takers to active market participants. To manage those massive proactive end-users efficiently, virtual power plant (VPP) as an innovative concept emerges. It can provide some necessary information to help consumers improve their profits and trade with the electricity market on behalf of them. One important information that is desired by the consumers is the prediction of renewable outputs inside this VPP. Presently, most VPPs run in a centralized manner, which means the VPP predicts the outputs of all the renewable sources it manages and provides the predictions to every consumer who buys this information. We prove that by providing predictions, the social total surplus can be improved. However, when more consumers and renewables participate in the market, this centralized scheme needs extensive data communication and may jeopardize the privacy of individual stakeholders. In this paper, we propose a decentralized prediction provision algorithm in which consumers from each subregion only buy local predictions and exchange information with the VPP. Convergence is proved under a mild condition, and the demand gap between centralized and decentralized schemes is proved to have zero expectation and bounded variance. We propose a framework for integrating optimal power flow (OPF) with state estimation (SE) in the loop for distribution networks. Our approach combines a primal-dual gradient-based OPF solver with a SE feedback loop based on a limited set of sensors for system monitoring, instead of assuming exact knowledge of all states. The estimation algorithm reduces uncertainty on unmeasured grid states based on a few appropriate online state measurements and noisy "pseudo-measurements". We analyze the convergence of the proposed algorithm and quantify the statistical estimation errors based on a weighted least squares (WLS) estimator. In this paper, we investigate the continuous time partial primal-dual gradient dynamics (P-PDGD) for solving convex optimization problems with the form $ \min\limits_{x\in X,y\in\Omega}\ f({x})+h(y),\ \textit{s.t.}\ A{x}+By=C $, where $ f({x}) $ is strongly convex and smooth, but $ h(y) $ is strongly convex and non-smooth. Affine equality and set constraints are included. We prove the exponential stability of P-PDGD, and bounds on decaying rates are provided. Moreover, it is also shown that the decaying rates can be regulated by setting the stepsize.

Solving optimal power flow (OPF) problems for large distribution networks incurs high computational complexity. We consider a large multi-phase distribution network of tree topology with a deep penetration of active devices. We divide the network into collaborating areas featuring subtree topology and subareas featuring subsubtree topology. We design a multi-level implementation of the primal-dual gradient algorithm to solve the voltage regulation OPF problems while preserving nodal voltage information and topological information within areas and subareas. Conventional optimal power flow (OPF) solvers assume full observability of the involved system states. However, in practice, there is a lack of reliable system monitoring devices in the distribution networks. To close the gap between the theoretic algorithm design and practical implementation, this work proposes to solve the OPF problems based on the state estimation (SE) feedback for the distribution networks where only a part of the involved system states are physically measured. The SE feedback increases the observability of the under-measured system and provides more accurate system states monitoring when the measurements are noisy. We analytically investigate the convergence of the proposed algorithm. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach is more robust to large pseudo measurement variability and inherent sensor noise in comparison to the other frameworks without SE feedback.

The increasing distributed and renewable energy resources and controllable devices in distribution systems make fast distribution system state estimation (DSSE) crucial in system monitoring and control. We consider a large multi-phase distribution system and formulate DSSE as a weighted least squares (WLS) problem. We divide the large distribution system into smaller areas of subtree structure, and by jointly exploring the linearized power flow model and the network topology, we propose a gradient-based multi-area algorithm to exactly and efficiently solve the WLS problem. The proposed algorithm enables distributed and parallel computation of the state estimation problem without compromising any performance. Numerical results on a 4,521-node test feeder show that the designed algorithm features fast convergence and accurate estimation results. Comparison with traditional Gauss-Newton method shows that the proposed method has much better performance in distribution systems with a limited amount of reliable measurement. The real-time implementation of the algorithm tracks time-varying system states with high accuracy.

This work addresses the distributed frequency control problem in power systems considering controllable load with a nonsmooth cost. The nonsmoothness exists widely in power systems, such as tiered price, greatly challenging the design of distributed optimal controllers. In this regard, we first formulate an optimization problem that minimizes the nonsmooth regulation cost, where both capacity limits of controllable load and tie-line flow are considered. Then, a distributed controller is derived using the Clark generalized gradient. We also prove the optimality of the equilibrium of the closed-loop system as well as its asymptotic stability. Simulations carried out on the IEEE 68-bus system verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We propose a hierarchical distributed algorithm to solve optimal power flow (OPF) problems that aim at dispatching controllable distributed energy resources (DERs) for voltage regulation at minimum cost. The proposed algorithm features unprecedented scalability to large multi-phase distribution networks by jointly exploring the tree/subtrees structure of a large radial distribution network and the structure of the linearized distribution power flow (LinDistFlow) model to derive a hierarchical, distributed implementation of the primal-dual gradient algorithm that solves OPF. The proposed implementation significantly reduces the computation loads compared to the centrally coordinated implementation of the same primal-dual algorithm without compromising optimality. With a large-scale integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), distribution systems are expected to be capable of providing capacity support for the transmission grid. To effectively harness the collective flexibility from massive DER devices, this paper studies distribution-level power aggregation strategies for transmission-distribution interaction. In particular, this paper proposes a method to model and quantify the aggregate power flexibility, i.e., the net power injection achievable at the substation, in unbalanced distribution systems over time. Incorporating the network constraints and multi-phase unbalanced modeling, the proposed method obtains an effective approximate feasible region of the net power injection. For any aggregate power trajectory within this region, it is proved that there exists a feasible disaggregation solution. In addition, a distributed model predictive control (MPC) framework is developed for the practical implementation of the transmission-distribution interaction. With the increasing penetration of renewable energy resources, power systems face new challenges in balancing power supply and demand and maintaining the nominal frequency. This paper studies load control to handle these challenges. In particular, a fully distributed automatic load control (ALC) algorithm, which only needs local measurement and local communication, is proposed. We prove that the load control algorithm globally converges to an optimal operating point which minimizes the total disutility of users, restores the nominal frequency and the scheduled tie-line power flows, and respects the load capacity limits and the thermal constraints of transmission lines. It is further shown that the asymptotic convergence still holds even when inaccurate system parameters are used in the control algorithm. In addition, the global exponential convergence of the reduced ALC algorithm without considering the capacity limits is proved and leveraged to study the dynamical tracking performance and robustness of the algorithm. We propose a novel algorithm to solve optimal power flow (OPF) that aims at dispatching controllable distributed energy resources (DERs) for voltage regulation at minimum cost. The proposed algorithm features unprecedented scalability to large distribution networks by utilizing an information structure based on networked autonomous grids (AGs). Specifically, each AG is a subtree of a large distribution network that has a tree topology. The topology and line parameters of each AG are known only to a regional coordinator (RC) that is responsible for communicating with and dispatching the DERs within this AG. The reduced network, where each AG is treated as a node, is managed by a central coordinator (CC), which knows the topology and line parameters of the reduced network only and communicates with all the RCs. We jointly explore this information structure and the structure of the linearized distribution power flow (LinDistFlow) model to derive a hierarchical, distributed implementation of the primal-dual gradient algorithm that solves the OPF. The proposed implementation significantly reduces the computation burden compared to the centrally coordinated implementation of the primal-dual algorithm. Numerical results on a 4,521-node test feeder show that the proposed hierarchical distributed algorithm can achieve an improvement of more than tenfold in the speed of convergence compared to the centrally coordinated primal-dual algorithm.

We present a framework based on spectral graph theory that captures the interplay among network topology, system inertia, and generator and load damping in determining the overall grid behavior and performance. Specifically, we show that the impact of network topology on a power system can be quantified through the network Laplacian eigenvalues, and such eigenvalues determine the grid robustness against low frequency disturbances. Moreover, we can explicitly decompose the frequency signal along scaled Laplacian eigenvectors when damping-inertia ratios are uniform across buses. The insight revealed by this framework partially explains why load-side participation in frequency regulation not only makes the system respond faster, but also helps lower the system nadir after a disturbance. Finally, by presenting a new controller specifically tailored to suppress high frequency disturbances, we demonstrate that our results can provide useful guidelines in the controller design for load-side primary frequency regulation. This improved controller is simulated on the IEEE 39-bus New England interconnection system to illustrate its robustness against high frequency oscillations compared to both the conventional droop control and a recent controller design.

With the rapid adoption of distributed photovoltaics (PVs) in certain regions, issues such as lower net load valley during the day and more steep ramping of the demand after sunset start to challenge normal operations at utility companies. Urban transportation systems also have high peak congestion periods and steep ramping because of traffic patterns. We propose using the emerging electric vehicles (EVs) and the charing/discharging stations (CDSs) to coordinate the operation between power distribution system (PDS) and the urban transportation system (UTS), therefore, the operation challenges in each system can be mitigated by utilizing the flexibility of the other system. We conducted the simulation and numerical analysis using the IEEE 8,500-bus for the PDS and the Sioux Falls system with about 10,000 cars for the UTS. Frequency restoration in power systems is conventionally performed by broadcasting a centralized signal to local controllers. As a result of the energy transition, technological advances, and the scientific interest in distributed control and optimization methods, a plethora of distributed frequency control strategies have been proposed recently that rely on communication amongst local controllers. In this paper we propose a fully decentralized leaky integral controller for frequency restoration that is derived from a classic lag element. We study steady-state, asymptotic optimality, nominal stability, input-to-state stability, noise rejection, transient performance, and robustness properties of this controller in closed loop with a nonlinear and multivariable power system model. We demonstrate that the leaky integral controller can strike an acceptable trade-off between performance and robustness as well as between asymptotic disturbance rejection and transient convergence rate by tuning its DC gain and time constant. We compare our findings to conventional decentralized integral control and distributed-averaging-based integral control in theory and simulations.

This paper formalizes an optimal water-power flow (OWPF) problem to optimize the use of controllable assets across power and water systems while accounting for the couplings between the two infrastructures. Tanks and pumps are optimally managed to satisfy water demand while improving power grid operations; {for the power network, an AC optimal power flow formulation is augmented to accommodate the controllability of water pumps.} Unfortunately, the physics governing the operation of the two infrastructures and coupling constraints lead to a nonconvex (and, in fact, NP-hard) problem; however, after reformulating OWPF as a nonconvex, quadratically-constrained quadratic problem, a feasible point pursuit-successive convex approximation approach is used to identify feasible and optimal solutions. In addition, a distributed solver based on the alternating direction method of multipliers enables water and power operators to pursue individual objectives while respecting the couplings between the two networks. We propose a framework to engineer synthetic-inertia and droop-control parameters for distributed energy resources (DERs) so that the system frequency in a network composed of DERs and synchronous generators conforms to prescribed transient and steady-state performance specifications. Our approach is grounded in a second-order lumped-parameter model that captures the dynamics of synchronous generators and frequency-responsive DERs endowed with inertial and droop control. A key feature of this reduced-order model is that its parameters can be related to those of the originating higher-order dynamical model. This allows one to systematically design the DER inertial and droop-control coefficients leveraging classical frequency-domain response characteristics of second-order systems. Time-domain simulations validate the accuracy of the model-reduction method and demonstrate how DER controllers can be designed to meet steady-state-regulation and transient-performance specifications.

In Part I of this paper we propose a decentralized optimal frequency control of multi-area power system with operational constraints, where the tie-line powers remain unchanged in the steady state and the power mismatch is balanced within individual control areas. In Part II of the paper, we propose a distributed controller for optimal frequency control in the network power balance case, where the power mismatch is balanced over the whole system. With the proposed controller, the tie-line powers remain within the acceptable range at equilibrium, while the regulation capacity constraints are satisfied both at equilibrium and during transient. It is revealed that the closed-loop system with the proposed controller carries out primal-dual updates with saturation for solving an associated optimization problem. To cope with discontinuous dynamics of the closed-loop system, we deploy the invariance principle for nonpathological Lyapunov function to prove its asymptotic stability. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of our controller.

This paper addresses the distributed optimal frequency control of multi-area power system with operational constraints, including the regulation capacity of individual control area and the power limits on tie-lines. Both generators and controllable loads are utilized to recover nominal frequencies while minimizing regulation cost. We study two control modes:the per-node balance mode and the network balance mode. In Part I of the paper, we only consider the per-node balance case, where we derive a completely decentralized strategy without the need for communication between control areas. It can adapt to unknown load disturbance. The tie-line powers are restored after load disturbance, while the regulation capacity constraints are satisfied both at equilibrium and during transient. We show that the closed-loop systems with the proposed control strategies carry out primal-dual updates for solving the associated centralized frequency optimization problems. We further prove the closed-loop systems are asymptotically stable and converge to the unique optimal solution of the centralized frequency optimization problems and their duals. Finally, we present simulation results to demonstrate the effectiveness of our design. This paper considers unbalanced multiphase distribution systems with generic topology and different load models, and extends the Z-bus iterative load-flow algorithm based on a fixed-point interpretation of the AC load-flow equations. Explicit conditions for existence and uniqueness of load-flow solutions are presented. These conditions also guarantee convergence of the load-flow algorithm to the unique solution. The proposed methodology is applicable to generic systems featuring (i) wye connections; (ii) ungrounded delta connections; (iii) a combination of wye-connected and delta-connected sources/loads; and, (iv) a combination of line-to-line and line-to-grounded-neutral devices at the secondary of distribution transformers. Further, a sufficient condition for the non-singularity of the load-flow Jacobian is proposed. Finally, linear load-flow models are derived, and their approximation accuracy is analyzed. Theoretical results are corroborated through experiments on IEEE test feeders.
