Abstract

Video surveillance can be significantly enhanced by using both top-view data, e.g., those from drone-mounted cameras in the air, and horizontal-view data, e.g., those from wearable cameras on the ground. Collaborative analysis of different-view data can facilitate various kinds of applications, such as human tracking, person identification, and human activity recognition. However, for such collaborative analysis, the first step is to associate people, referred to as subjects in this paper, across these two views. This is a very challenging problem due to large human-appearance difference between top and horizontal views. In this paper, we present a new approach to address this problem by exploring and matching the subjects' spatial distributions between the two views. More specifically, on the top-view image, we model and match subjects' relative positions to the horizontal-view camera in both views and define a matching cost to decide the actual location of horizontal-view camera and its view angle in the top-view image. We collect a new dataset consisting of top-view and horizontal-view image pairs for performance evaluation and the experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract

The concept of a global Internet of Things (IoT), as proposed by Bart, revolutionizes connectivity by assigning unique digital identities to everyday objects, thereby enabling the development of smarter devices. However, the advancement and expansion of the IoT face significant obstacles and constraints, including energy efficiency and memory usage, which require further investigation. To address these challenges, this study presents a novel framework named IoT.js. This framework aims to facilitate the interconnection of lightweight devices within the web-based IoT ecosystem. These devices, ranging from microcontrollers to those with limited memory capacities, stand to benefit from IoT.js’s utilization of JavaScript for IoT application development. By promoting collaboration among lightweight devices with small memory sizes, IoT.js offers a promising solution to the resource constraints encountered in IoT deployments. This study contributes to the advancement of the IoT landscape by introducing a new approach that not only enables the efficient use of limited resources but also facilitates the seamless interconnection of lightweight devices within the IoT network. Additionally, the study conducts performance analysis to measure the efficacy of the proposed framework. Through rigorous evaluation of key metrics, such as energy efficiency and memory usage, the research findings validate the effectiveness of IoT.js in addressing the challenges associated with IoT deployment. Overall, the proposed IoT.js based approach represents a significant step forward in enhancing interconnectivity within the IoT ecosystem, thereby unlocking new possibilities for the development of innovative IoT applications and services. 15. The extraction of high value chemicals from heather (Calluna vulgaris) and bracken (Pteridium aquilinum)

Abstract

The aim of the project is to extract and identify high value chemicals with potential applications as pharmaceutical drugs or precursors from heather (Calluna vulgaris) and bracken (Pteridium aquilinum). Supercritical carbon dioxide extracts of heather were analysed for their triterpenoid content. Several triterpenoids were identified in heather supercritical carbon dioxide extracts and many of them were already reported to have potential valuable biological activities. Seasonal variation of total triterpenoid content in heather was also evaluated. The result indicated that summer flowering heather contains the highest concentration of total triterpenoid (15400 ug/g dry plant) and spring heather picked in March exhibited the second highest total triterpenoid content (11200 ug/g dry plant). Optimal harvest and extraction time of heather is also identified based on its triterpenoid seasonal variation trend. In this study, supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of bracken was achieved for the first time. Naturally occurring pterosin B and pterosin F were identified in bracken supercritical CO2 extract and the seasonal variation in pterosin content and other major compounds in bracken were also evaluated. Bracken crozier was found to contain the highest content of pterosins, and the pterosin content reduced dramatically when the frond grew towards its maturity. Geographical difference was also found to cause significant variation in the level of pterosins. It was found that Welsh bracken contains much less pterosin B and pterosin F compared to the Yorkshire sample. This distinct difference may be due to different pH value of the soil in Kilburn (Yorkshire) and Wales. Pterosins were recently proved to have strong anti-diabetic and anti-obesity activities. Although pterosin B and F were not identified to have certain anti-diabetic or anti-obesity activities in previous research, these pterosins, especially pterosin F, have high possibility to be used as precursors to other more effective pterosins because of its active chlorinated side chain.
