A typical El Niño event often results in suppressed tropical cyclone (TC) genesis frequency (TCGF) over the North Atlantic (NA) and a distinct northwest-southeast dipole pattern in TCGF anomaly over the western North Pacific (WNP). The 2023 saw a strong El Niño event but surprisingly active NA and suppressed WNP TC activities. Here, we present that these unprecedented deviations were driven by the record-warm NA, a record-breaking negative phase of the Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM), and background global warming. Results from high-resolution global model experiments demonstrate that extraordinary Atlantic warming dominated the increased NA TCGF and contributed equally with the PMM to the suppressed WNP TCGF, overshadowing El Niños impact. Global warming also contributed to the observed TCGF anomalies. Our findings demonstrate that the typical influence of strong El Niño events on regional TC activity could be markedly altered by other climate modes, highlighting the complexity of TC genesis in a warming world.

How much the observed long-term variability of tropical cyclone (TC) activity is due to anthropogenic global warming (GW) or internal climate variability remains unclear, limiting the confidence in projected future change in TC activity. Here, the relative contributions of GW and the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) to the long-term variability of TC track density (TCTD) over the North Pacific (NP) are quantified on the basis of statistical analyses and climate model simulations. Results show that historical GW mainly reduced (increased) TCTD over the western (eastern) NP, while the positive (negative) IPO corresponds to a NP basin-wide increase (decrease) in TCTD except in some coastal regions. The IPO has a much greater impact on TCTD over the western NP than GW, while the IPO and GW impacts are about equal over the eastern NP during 1960-2019. These findings have important implications for projecting future TC activity over the NP.

The interdecadal variability of tropical cyclone precipitation (TCP) over the western North Pacific (WNP) has not been thoroughly explored in previous studies. Here, we show that the TCP variations are modulated by both the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) as evidenced by reanalysis data and model experiments. A clustering analysis of tropical cyclone tracks shows that the AMO dominates a dipole pattern of TCP anomalies in the South China Sea and along the coastal eastern China. Meanwhile, the IPO dominates TCP over the southeastern WNP. Further analyses show that the AMO, particularly its extratropical component, affects TCP over the WNP by triggering an eastward‐propagating Rossby‐wave train, resulting in a pair of anomalous gyres over the WNP. Contrastly, the IPO modulates TCP by stimulating tropical circulation anomalies via the tropical pathway. These findings shed light on improving near‐term TCP forecast and its regional influence on East Asia. Here, we find that TCP over the western North Pacific (WNP) exhibits significantly interdecadal variability and regional characteristics, a departure from the previous studies focusing on the entire WNP. The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) mainly causes a dipole response of decadal changes in TCP over the South China Sea and coastal eastern China. Moreover, the AMO primarily affects TCP over the sub‐regional WNP through the extra‐tropical pathway by exciting a Rossby wave train. On the other hand, the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) predominantly affects TCP over the southeastern part of the WNP through the tropical pathway, inducing significant circulation anomalies over the tropical WNP. These findings offer valuable insights for future research and forecasting of TCP. Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most devastating natural hazards for coastal regions, and their response to human activities has broad socio-economic relevance. So far, how TC responds to climate change mitigation remains unknown, complicating the design of adaptation policies. Using net-zero and negative carbon emission experiments, we reveal a robust hemisphere-asymmetric hysteretic TC response to CO2 reduction. During the decarbonization phase, the Northern Hemisphere TC frequency continues to decrease for several more decades, while the Southern Hemisphere oceans abruptly shifts to a stormier state, with the timescales depending on mitigation details. Such systematic changes are largely attributed to the planetary-scale reorganization of vertical wind shear and midlevel upward motion associated with the hysteretic southward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, underpinned by the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and El Niño-like mean state changes. The hemispheric contrast in TC response suggests promising benefits for most of the world's population from human action to mitigate greenhouse gas warming, but it may also exacerbate regional socioeconomic disparities, for example by putting more pressure on small open-ocean island states in the Southern Hemisphere to adapt to TC risks. Current coupled climate models contain large biases in simulating tropical cyclogenesis, reducing the confidence in tropical cyclone (TC) projection. In this study, we investigated the influence of sea surface temperature (SST) biases on TC genesis in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 simulations from 1979 to 2014. Positive TC genesis biases were found over the tropical central North Pacific (CNP) in most of climate models, including the high-resolution models. Compared to coupled models, TC genesis density (TCGD) simulations over CNP in uncoupled models forced by observational SST improved obviously. A warm SST bias over the tropical CNP in the coupled models is the main cause of TC genesis biases. The SST bias–induced diabatic heating leads to an anomalous Gill-type atmospheric circulation response, which contributes to a series of favorable environmental conditions for TC formation over the CNP. Numerical experiments were also performed with HiRAM to demonstrate the influence of SST biases on the TCGD simulation, further confirming our conclusion. A prominent feature of the western North Pacific tropical cyclone genesis frequency (TCGF) anomaly in response to El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a distinct west‐east dipole structure in the present‐day (PD) climate. Here, large ensemble high‐resolution simulations show that the current dipole may transform into a monopole under global warming (GW). In the PD climate, the ENSO‐induced dipole effect on TCGF is mainly observed in late autumn. However, GW accelerates this effect into the summer by amplifying atmospheric circulation anomalies. Consequently, this leads to a significant increase in the coastal TCGF during the development phase of El Niño under GW. Meanwhile, it weakens the anomalous anticyclonic circulation during late autumn, leading to an increase in coastal TCGF during the mature phase of El Niño, and vice versa. Therefore, the combined effect suggests a potential trend toward spatial homogenization during ENSO phases under GW. During the warm phase of ENSO, there is a significant increase in TCGF over the southeastern part of the WNP (open‐sea region), but a decrease over its northwestern part (coastal region). The opposite pattern occurs during the cold phase of ENSO. However, under global warming (GW), this dipole pattern could transform into a basin‐uniform change in TCGF. In the present climate, ENSO primarily affects TCGF only over the open‐sea region during the summer (June to August) but causes a dipole pattern of TCGF anomalies in the autumn (September–November). The summer TCGF over the coastal region is less influenced by ENSO. Hence, the dipole pattern of TCGF anomalies from summer to autumn is mainly contributed by the anomaly in autumn TCGF over the coastal region. However, GW could extend the ENSO impact on coastal TCGF to summer. Therefore, the TCGF anomaly in summer offsets the opposite TCGF anomaly in autumn over the coastal region during the ENSO phase, resulting in a more consistent change in TCGF anomalies across the region under GW. Sand and dust storm (SDS) weather has caused several severe hazards in many regions worldwide, e.g., environmental pollution, traffic disruptions, and human casualties. Widespread surveillance cameras show great potential for high spatiotemporal resolution SDS observation. This study explores the possibility of employing the surveillance camera as an alternative SDS monitor. Based on SDS image feature analysis, a Multi-Stream Attention-aware Convolutional Neural Network (MA-CNN), which learns SDS image features at different scales through a multi-stream structure and employs an attention mechanism to enhance the detection performance, is constructed for an accurate SDS observation task. Moreover, a dataset with 13,216 images was built to train and test the MA-CNN. Eighteen algorithms, including nine well-known deep learning models and their variants built on an attention mechanism, were used for comparison. The experimental results showed that the MA-CNN achieved an accuracy performance of 0.857 on the training dataset, while this value changed to 0.945, 0.919, and 0.953 in three different real-world scenarios, which is the optimal performance among the compared algorithms. Therefore, surveillance camera-based monitors can effectively observe the occurrence of SDS disasters and provide valuable supplements to existing SDS observation networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How future multiple tropical cyclone events (MTCEs) could change is crucial for effective risk management and ensuring human safety, however, it remains unclear. This study projects changes in MTCEs by 2050 in the major basins of the Northern Hemisphere using high‐resolution climate models. Results show a significant increase in the frequency and duration of MTCEs over the North Atlantic (NA), a notable decrease over the western North Pacific (WNP), and little change over the eastern North Pacific (ENP). The increase in MTCEs over the NA is concentrated in August–September, while the decrease over the WNP occurs in most months. In contrast, the ENP exhibits large yet insignificant seasonal variation, suggesting considerable uncertainty in this basin. Further analysis shows that mid‐level vertical motion dominates the MTCE changes over the WNP, while vertical wind shear contributes the most to the NA, which may be linked to future changes in tropical convection.
