Purpose: The paper aims to propose a virtual reality (VR) wisdom teaching model in open university English course from the perspective of "Metaverse". The study aims to testify the stimulation for English learning and the effectiveness of English-expressing with VR tools for adult learners from the practice in a pilot reform project. Design/methodology/approach: The paper opted for an exploratory study using ICARE Design Model as the framework, under the grounded theories of constructivism and multi-modal teaching. The study compared the evaluation data of one-semester English learning performance between the experimental class (67 students) with VR practice and the controlled class (67 students), including speaking test score, qualitative feedback and in-depth experience analysis. The data were complemented by reflection paper analysis, including manual evaluation (the criteria of semantics, pronunciation, fluency and completeness), questionnaire survey (in the form of five-point Likert scale) and semi-structured interview. Findings: The paper provides empirical insights about the VR wisdom teaching model in English language teaching and learning in a Chinese Open University. The empirical results suggest that "3I" features of VR technology could make up for the shortcomings of traditional English classes in open universities in China, and VR resources designed with curriculum teaching materials could also be helpful for students' command of knowledge points and language skills. What's more, the sense of authentic experience in virtual could promote the teaching and learning effect in college English classes. Research limitations/implications: The present study focuses on a wisdom mode of foreign language teaching and learning for adult learners in open education, so the research results may lack generalizability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to further explore the deep integration of VR/artificial intelligence in foreign language teaching and learning. Originality/value: This paper fulfills an identified need to study how VR tools provide an engaging, fun and immersive language learning environment, to enhance autonomous learning and learning engagement.

In the milieu of modern food consumption, public health is beleaguered by the prevalence of processed foods and a dearth of clear nutritional information, factors that are intimately linked to the surge of global health issues. Our exploration into the interplay between food labeling, dietary education, regulatory policies, and community interventions reveals a complex landscape where each element is critical to steering public health toward a more nutritious future. Through a synthesis of multi-disciplinary research and pragmatic case studies, we dissect the efficacy of current nutritional transparency practices and propose a suite of actionable strategies aimed at catalyzing improvement. We argue for the necessity of a robust, unified approach where policy reform, comprehensive education, and grassroots empowerment converge to enact substantive change. This article posits that such a collaborative and systemic endeavor is not merely beneficial but imperative for engendering informed dietary choices, mitigating the tide of nutrition-related diseases, and ultimately sculpting a framework for sustained public health advancement. Our findings illuminate the potential for significant public health outcomes through concerted action and suggest that the path to a healthier society is paved by the collective efforts of policymakers, educators, and community advocates working in tandem to combat the complexities of the contemporary food environment.

Segmenting clouds and their shadows is a critical challenge in remote sensing image processing. The shape, texture, lighting conditions, and background of clouds and their shadows impact the effectiveness of cloud detection. Currently, architectures that maintain high resolution throughout the entire information-extraction process are rapidly emerging. This parallel architecture, combining high and low resolutions, produces detailed high-resolution representations, enhancing segmentation prediction accuracy. This paper continues the parallel architecture of high and low resolution. When handling high- and low-resolution images, this paper employs a hybrid approach combining the Transformer and CNN models. This method facilitates interaction between the two models, enabling the extraction of both semantic and spatial details from the images. To address the challenge of inadequate fusion and significant information loss between high- and low-resolution images, this paper introduces a method based on ASMA (Axial Sharing Mixed Attention). This approach establishes pixel-level dependencies between high-resolution and low-resolution images, aiming to enhance the efficiency of image fusion. In addition, to enhance the effective focus on critical information in remote sensing images, the AGM (Attention Guide Module) is introduced, to integrate attention elements from original features into ASMA, to alleviate the problem of insufficient channel modeling of the self-attention mechanism. Our experimental results on the Cloud and Cloud Shadow dataset, the SPARCS dataset, and the CSWV dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, surpassing the state-of-the-art techniques for cloud and cloud shadow segmentation. As the aging population intensifies, the service supply of elderly care institutions such as nursing homes and community elderly care service centers is relatively insufficient, failing to adequately address the diverse elderly care needs. The combination of mutual assistance elderly care and the framework of “Family + Community + Institution” enables the elderly to have a better elderly care experience within their familiar environment. This approach better fulfills the demands of home-based elderly care and optimizes the efficient allocation of elderly care resources. It is a new elderly care model widely accepted by urban community residents. A survey of mutual assistance elderly care practices across nine districts of the main city of Chongqing revealed representative models of community mutual assistance elderly care, including community mutual care organizations, “time bank” mutual care models, elderly care service organizations, and elderly community universities. Some practices and innovations in urban mutual assistance elderly care in Chongqing have provided useful exploration for actively addressing the issue of aging. However, there are still issues such as an incomplete urban community mutual assistance elderly care system, poor management and supervision, low social participation, and resource scarcity. Hence, this study seeks to explore the developmental obstacles encountered by mutual assistance and elderly care in Chongqing urban communities. It aims to propose practical and feasible suggestions and plans, ultimately promoting the healthy and sustainable development of the mutual assistance and elderly care model in urban communities in Chongqing.

Experiments have shown that cholesterol influences the membrane permeability of small molecules, amino acids, and cell-penetrating peptides. However, their exact translocation mechanisms under the influence of cholesterol remain poorly understood. Given the practical importance of cell-penetrating peptides and the existence of varied cholesterol contents in different cell types, it is necessary to examine the permeation of amino acids in cholesterol-containing membranes at atomic level of details. Here, bias-exchange metadynamics simulations were employed to investigate the molecular mechanism of the membrane permeation of two amino acids Arg and Trp important for cell-penetrating peptides in the presence of different concentrations of cholesterol. We found that the free energy barrier of Arg+ (the protonated form) permeation increased linearly as the cholesterol concentration increased, whereas the barrier of Trp permeation had a rapid increase from 0 mol. % to 20 mol. % cholesterol-containing membranes and nearly unchanged from 20 mol. % to 40 mol. % cholesterol-containing membranes. Arg0 becomes slightly more stable than Arg+ at the center of the dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) membrane with 40 mol. % cholesterol concentrations. As a result, Arg+ has a similar permeability as Trp at 0 mol. % and 20 mol. % cholesterol, but a significantly lower permeability than Trp at 40 mol. % cholesterol. This difference is caused by the gradual reduction of water defects for Arg+ as the cholesterol concentration increases but lack of water defects for Trp in cholesterol-containing membranes. Strong but different orientation dependence between Arg+ and Trp permeations is observed. These results provide an improved microscopic understanding of amino-acid permeation through cholesterol-containing DPPC membrane systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to depict the clinical features, including myositis specific or associated antibody (MSA/MAA) profile of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with muscle involvement in a Chinese cohort. Methods: We retrospectively studied a cohort of 1696 SLE inpatients and screened for concurrent myositis features from January 2013 to June 2021. Propensity score matching was applied to enroll controls without myositis features from our cohort. Demographic, clinical and laboratory variables were collected. MSA/MAA panels containing 16 autoantibodies (TIF1‐γ, MDA5, NXP2, Mi‐2α/β, SAE1, Jo‐1, PL‐7, PL‐12, EJ, OJ, SRP, HMGCR, cN‐1A, PM‐Scl75/100, Ku and Ro52) were tested by line‐blotting assay. Binary logistic regression and K‐means clustering were applied. Results: Forty‐one of 1696 (2.42%) SLE patients in our SLE inpatient cohort showed features of myositis. Binary logistic regression revealed that new‐onset SLE (odds ratio [OR] = 4.77, 95% CI = 1.10–20.57), interstitial lung disease (ILD) (OR = 10.07, 95% CI = 1.65–61.51), positive anti‐U1RNP antibody (OR = 4.38, 95% CI = 1.08–17.75), and Raynaud's phenomenon (OR = 7.94, 95% CI = 1.41–44.69) were associated with muscle involvement. Except for anti‐Ro52 (50%), anti‐Ku antibody (38.2%) was the next frequently detected MSA/MAA in the panel, followed by anti‐NXP2 antibody (11.8%). It was noteworthy that multiple MSA/MAAs (≥2, excluding anti‐Ro52) coexisted in 9 patients. Patients with myositis features were clustered into 2 subgroups. Cluster 1 was characterized by anti‐Ku or anti‐Ro52 with high SLE Disease Activity Index, whereas cluster 2 presented with anti‐U1RNP, Raynaud's phenomenon and pulmonary arterial hypertension resembling mixed connective tissue disease. Conclusion: In our Chinese SLE inpatient cohort, muscle involvement was infrequent. Nevertheless, distinct features in these SLE patients deserve further study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
