7. An Improved Convolutional Neural Network for Plant Disease Detection Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Images

Abstract

Accurate and fast locating of diseased plants is critical for the sustainability of forest management. Recent developments in computer vision made by deep learning provide a new way for diseased plant detection from images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). In this paper, we developed an anchor-free detector, an enhanced CenterNet named as Enhanced CenterNet (ECenterNet) model, which significantly improved the overall accuracy over the original CenterNet model without any increase in the running speed or number of parameters. Compared with the original model, in the newly proposed model improvements had been made in the training stage to increase the accuracy of the detector, while procedures in the test stage remained unchanged. Under the hold-out dataset, the proposed model is trained on 5,281 tiles and tested on 3,842 images, the results showed that the overall detection accuracy of ECenterNet reached 54.7% by COCO Challenge metrics (mean average precision (mAP) @[0.5, 0.95]), while mAP accuracy of the original CenterNet was 49.8%. This research indicates that the proposed deep learning detection model provides a better solution for detecting diseased plants from UAV images with high accuracy and real-time speed.

8. 3D multi-scale characterization and modelling of damage in ceramic matrix composites

Abstract

The SiC/SiC composite has been proposed as a candidate material for the fuel cladding component in advanced nuclear reactors. The present thesis aims to characterize the damage evolution within a SiC/SiC composite in different conditions and then validate a multiscale damage model. In order to gain insight into the damage mechanisms, in situ experimental methods are required to detect damage development and quantify the mechanical response at different scale to support the reliability assessment and simulation modelling of the components. In this thesis, in situ 3D laboratory and synchrotron X-ray computed tomography and quantitative digital volume correlation have been applied to characterize the damage evolution in a SiC/SiC composite, with respect to its heterogeneous microstructure and macroscale mechanical response. The quantified information from tomography further helps the development of an advanced multiscale model with the microstructure sensitivity. Experimental methods for the direct in situ observation of damage have been developed for SiC/SiC C-ring specimens at both room temperature and elevated temperature. The time-resolved tomography allows the continuous observation of the damage within the heterogenous microstructure and the macroscale deformation. The development of the damage in the composite depends on the loading history, and the high temperature (900°C) in air degenerates the mechanical properties of the SiC/SiC composite as shown in the observations of the crack paths. The hoop pressurization test of the SiC/SiC composite tube via an expanding plug revealed the distribution of the matrix cracks at both the interior and outer surfaces of tube sample for the first time. The full-field multiscale in situ observation quantifies the non-uniform deformation of the composite tube under internal pressure with the corresponding strain measurement. It also allows a more accurate experimental measurement of the mechanical response in the composite tube component. Damage simulations have been performed in the finite-element microstructure meshfree (FEMME) model. The 3D experimental observation provided the statistical description of the microstructure for the model. The virtual damage simulated by the FEMME model is compared with the experimental observations in both the C-ring and hoop pressurization tests. The capability of the microstructure sensitive model has been demonstrated with a high fidelity of the simulated damage evolution and mechanical response in the composite. This coupled experimental and simulation studies could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the damage mechanisms in the SiC/SiC composite.

14. On the stress state of a pressurised pipe with an initial thickness variation, subjected to non-homogeneous internal corrosion

Abstract

The paper concerns 2D problem of an elastic thick-walled pipe with an initial thickness variation, subjected to internal pressure and mechanochemical corrosion. The inner perimeter of the pipe cross-section is elliptical, while the outer is circular. The linear Dolinskii corrosion kinetics model is used. In the general case, structural instability of initial boundary value problems with unknown evolving boundaries can cause the divergence of numerical procedures when modelling the processes under study. It is observed that the attempts to circumvent the divergence of numerical procedure can suppress the manifestation of mechanochemical effect and yield inaccurate results. Thus, it is necessary to find a compromise between competing computational processes. Calculations revealed that the variation of the initial pipe wall thickness within the acceptable pipe wall tolerance can noticeably accelerate the growth of stresses and, consequently, reduce the durability of the pipe. The applicability of analytical solutions for a perfect circular pipe with a reduced thickness, equal to the minimum thickness of the imperfect pipe, to the case under study is also discussed.

Abstract

The article discusses research which was conducted to analyze the prognostic factors for survival in 75 Chinese patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). Researchers evaluated patients with PTCL who were newly diagnosed between April 2004 and November 2011 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University. They found that the three year overall survival rate of all patients was 49% and that age and bone marrow involvement were factors which affected overall survival.
