12. Physical Characteristics of the Compressibility of Saturated Cohesive Soil

Abstract

Water content and liquid limit are basic physical properties in saturated cohesive soils. Through the statistical analysis of compression index and these two physical properties, trends showed that compression index increases with increasing water content and liquid limit. Very loose and soft saturated cohesive soils with high water content have high compressibility; however, very stiff and hard saturated cohesive soils have low compressibility. Based on these tests, the correlations of compression index and physical properties were established for soils in China. These correlations provide a good approach to predict compression index based on physical properties and can be used for geotechnical parameter analysis.

Abstract

We propose a new model of a Josephson junction array embedded in a resonant cavity. The model considers the excitation of the resonance mode by the array and the influence of the resonance mode on the array. The phase-locking properties of the junction array are investigated in the frame of the model. Resonant steps in the current–voltage characteristics due to the interaction between the array and the resonant cavity and many other features of the phase-locking behaviors have been produced. The results include the influence of the quality factor, the strength of the coupling, as well as the junction number of the array on the phase-locking properties. The model can successfully explain many features of the real situation and provide useful new predictions.

24. Inductance of Long Intrinsic Josephson Junction Arrays Composed of Misaligned Tl 2 Ba 2 CaCu 2 O 8 Thin Films

Abstract

We observe and measure the inductance of long intrinsic Josephson junction arrays composed of misaligned Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 thin films grown on LaAlO3 substrates. The array consists of about 9.1×103 intrinsic Josephson junctions, where 90° phase shift between ac voltage across the array and ac current flowing through has been measured. Furthermore, the voltage is proportional to the frequency of the current. The measured inductance values of the intrinsic Josephson junction arrays are basically consistent with the theoretically calculated results, confirming that the inductance is mainly due to the Josephson effect. The dependence of the array inductance on its critical current is also discussed.

Abstract

Tl2Ba2CaCu2Ox (Tl-2212) thin films were prepared by the two-step technique. A precursor film was first prepared by the pulsed laser deposition method, and then experienced the incorporation of thalliation in a one-step or two-step annealing process. The experimental results show that the two-step annealing process produces dense and smooth films, and that the one-step annealing process produces a high critical temperature film of 101K, but the transition width is wide. Precursor films with homogeneous Ba2Ca1.3Cu2.1Ox composition are essential for producing high-quality Tl-2212 films.

Abstract

The reoccurrence of pits has been found on the surfaces of c-axis YBa2Cu3O7-? (YBCO) films grown epitaxially on 10? vicinal SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. They are always associated with films with a step-terrace structure, while polycrystalline films have no pits. Pit formation is attributed to the large interfacial stress induced by vicinal substrate and oxygen deficiency of the YBCO film during the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic (T-O) phase transition, which cannot be released by forming twins, and leads to rupturing of the film surface. By reducing the oxidation partial pressure for the T-O phase transition to 80?Pa, no pits were formed, and the YBCO film is superconducting at 60?K. PACS: ?62.?20.?Hk, 74.?76.?Bz, 81.?15.

Abstract

In this paper, compact high temperature superconducting (HTS) multiplexers are presented for satellite communication applications. The first multiplexer consists of an input coupling node and three high-order bandpass filters, which is named triplexer. The node is realized by a loop microstrip line instead of conventional T-junction to eliminate the redundant susceptance due to combination of three filters. There are two eight-pole band-pass filters and one ten-pole band-pass filter with cascaded quadruplet structure for realizing high isolation. Moreover, the triplexer is extended to a multiplexer with six channels so as to verify the expansibility of the suggested approach. The triplexer is fabricated using double-sided YBa2Cu3O7 thin films on a 38 × 25 mm2 LaAlO3 substrate. The experimental results, when compared with those ones from the T-junction multiplexer, show that our multiplexer has lower insertion loss, smaller sizes and higher isolation between any two channels. Also, good agreement has been achieved between simulations and measurements, which illustrate the effectiveness of our methods for the design of high performance HTS multiplexers.

35. The Growth of (00l)-Oriented CeO2 Buffer Layers on R-Cut Sapphire Substrates for the Epitaxy of Tl-2212 Superconducting Films

Abstract

Tl-2212 superconducting films were fabricated on r-cut sapphire substrates buffered with (00l)-oriented CeO2 films. The buffer layers were deposited by the cerium dioxide sputtering target and the RF magnetron sputtering method. The epitaxial growth of CeO2 films on r-cut sapphire substrates was obtained over a wide range of sputtering parameters, such as temperature, pressure, power and Ar/O2 ratio. The Tl-2212 films grown on these buffer layers subsequently were purely c-axis orientation. The critical transition temperature of the best film was 105.6 K, the critical current density was 2.8 MA/cm2 (77 K, 0 T) and the surface resistance was 435 μΩ (10 GHz, 77 K).

Abstract

For obtaining pure phase Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 (Tl-2223) films with good superconducting properties, the growth technique is improved by dc magnetron sputtering and a triple post-annealing process. The triple post-annealing process comprises annealing twice in argon and once in oxygen at different temperatures. In the first low-temperature annealing phase in argon, Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl-2212) is obtained to effectively minimize evaporation in the next step. With the increase of temperature in the second annealing stage in argon, the previously prepared Tl-2212 inter-phase is converted into Tl-2223 phase. An additional annealing in oxygen is also adopted to improve the properties of Tl-2223 films, each containing an optimal oxygen content value. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) θ–2θ scans, ω scans and rotational scans show that each of the Tl-2223 films has a high phase purity and an epitaxial structure. Smooth films are observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The critical temperatures Tc of the films are measured to be about 120 K and the critical current densities Jc can reach 4.0 MA/cm2 at 77 K at self field.
