High-order wave-making theories are becoming available but are limited to certain ranges of waves and wavemaker types in their applicability. Alternatively, machine learning can be considered to find nonlinear functional relationships. Therefore, this paper proposes a simple and universal framework for generating and absorbing waves based on machine learning. This framework trains neural networks to establish the transfer function between the free-surface elevation on the wavemaker and the wavemaker velocity. Significantly, penalty term and data augmentation techniques based on wave-making mechanisms are introduced to increase the generalization ability of neural networks, rather than pure data-driven. Therefore, once the target wave profiles in front of the wavemaker are given, it can realize generating waves and absorbing reflected waves at the same time. Taking piston and plunger wavemakers as examples, an in-house numerical solver is applied to simulate both wave generation and absorption. The simulated wave profiles and wave orbital velocities are validated with analytical solutions, showing that the proposed framework is effective at eliminating the re-reflection wave. Then, the validation for generating the solitary wave and the New-year wave is performed, indicating that the generated waves agree quite well with the desired wave elevation. The proposed framework can facilitate the wavemaker design in the future, and no complex theoretical derivation is required.

The moment-of-fluid (MOF) method is an extension of the volume-of-fluid method with piecewise linear interface construction (VOF-PLIC). By minimizing the least square error of the centroid of the cutting polyhedron, the MOF method reconstructs the linear interface without using any neighboring information. Traditional MOF involves iteration while finding the optimized linear reconstruction. Here, we propose an alternative approach based on a machine learning algorithm: Decision Tree algorithm. A training data set is generated from a list of random cuts of a unit cube by plane. The Decision Tree algorithm extracts the input-output relationship from the training data, so that the resulting function determines the normal vector of the reconstruction plane directly, without any iteration. The present method is tested on a range of popular interface advection test problems. The moment-of-fluid method (MOF) is an extension of the volume-of-fluid method with piecewise linear interface construction (VOF-PLIC). In MOF reconstruction, the optimized normal vector is determined from the reference centroid and the volume fraction by iteration. The state-of-art work by \citet{milcent_moment--fluid_2020} proposed an analytic gradient of the objective function, which greatly reduces the computational cost. In this study, we further accelerate the MOF reconstruction algorithm by using Gauss-Newton iteration instead of Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) iteration. We also propose an improved initial guess for MOF reconstruction, which improves the efficiency and the robustness of the MOF reconstruction algorithm. Our implementation of the code and test cases are available on our Github repository.

The performance of interFoam (a widely used solver within OpenFOAM package) in simulating the propagation of water waves has been reported to be sensitive to the temporal and spatial resolution. To facilitate more accurate simulations, a numerical wave tank is built based on a high-order accurate Navier-Stokes model, which employs the VPM (volume-average/point-value multi-moment) scheme as the fluid solver and the THINC/QQ method (THINC method with quadratic surface representation and Gaussian quadrature) for the free-surface capturing. Simulations of regular waves in an intermediate water depth are conducted and the results are assessed via comparing with the analytical solutions. The performance of the present model and interFoam solver in simulating the wave propagation is systematically compared in this work. The results clearly demonstrate that compared with interFoam solver, the present model significantly improves the dissipation properties of the propagating wave, where the waveforms as well as the velocity distribution can be substantially maintained while the waves propagating over long distances even with large time steps and coarse grids. It is also shown that the present model requires much less computation time to reach a given error level in comparison with interFoam solver., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures
