Abstract

Photodetectors with broadband optical response have promising applications in many advanced optoelectronic and photonic devices. Especially, those with the detection range up to mid-infrared at room temperature are very challenging and highly desired. Recently, Weyl semimetal has been discovered and proposed to be favorable for photodetection since in general it breaks Lorentz invariance to have tilted chiral Weyl cones around Fermi level, which leads to chirality dependent photocurrents at arbitrarily long wavelength. Furthermore, the linear dispersion bands in Weyl cones result in very high carrier mobility and much reduced thermal carrier compared with the parabolic ones in narrow-gap semiconductors. Here, we report that the Weyl semimetal TaAs based photodetector can operate at room temperature with spectral range from blue (438.5 nm) to mid-infrared (10.29 {\mu}m) light wavelengths and the responsibility and detectivity is more than 78 uA W-1 and 1.88*107 Jones, respectively. This is the first photodetector made by a Weyl semimetal and shows its promising in room-temperature mid-infrared photodetection.

Abstract

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light, which is associated with the rotation of the phase structure, gives rise to numerous novel physical phenomena inlight–matter interactions. However, the direct generation of scalar OAM lasers with power‐handling capability and controllable states at the source remains challenging owing to mode degeneracy, handedness selection, and nonlinear thermal effects, which can even lead to topological charge splitting. This paper proposes a novel approach that allows spatial mode‐conversion‐controlled laser oscillation in a high‐gain OAM laser cavity with an integrated spiral‐face output coupler (SFOC). By adapting position‐dependent resonant modes, scalar optical vortices with a record power level (>60 W), high purity (>90%), and controllable OAM states (ħ or −8ħ) are demonstrated. Further, the dynamic process of OAM generation and evolution in the cavity is revealed. The concept presented herein opens a new route for the generation of OAM laser sources toward high power levels and holds promise for advancing classical and quantum optics, particularly in the area of light–matter interactions. Abstract

We demonstrated the continuous-wave (cw) and pulsed optical vortex with topological charges driven by heat generated during the lasing process without introducing the astigmatism effect and reducing lasing efficiency. During the lasing process, the topological charges were changeable by the thermal-induced lens and selected by the mode-matching between the pump and oscillating beams. With a graphene sample as the saturable absorber, the pulsed optical vortex was achieved at the wavelength of 1.36 {\mu}m, which identified that graphene could be used as a pulse modulator for the generation of pulsed optical vortex. It could be believed that the thermally driven cw and pulsed optical vortex should have various promising applications based on the compact structure, changeable topological charges and specific wavelength, Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In this paper, we demonstrate a SESAM mode-locked Tm:CaYLuAlO4 (a-cut) laser in the 2-μm spectral range. A birefringent filter (BF) is employed to shift the emission wavelength above 2 μm to support the stable mode locking through avoiding the structured water vapor absorption. Pulses as short as 288 fs are generated with a central wavelength of 2037 nm and an average power of 166 mW at a repetition rate of ~ 77.6 MHz. Moreover, wavelength tunable femtosecond laser with a tuning range from 2031.8 to 2081.1 nm is realized simply by rotating the birefringent filter around its surface normal. This work experimentally shows that birefringent filter is a simple and low-cost way to support the stable mode locking of Tm-bulk femtosecond lasers with an emission peak in the water vapor absorption region.
