1. Research on the treatment of sulfide-containing wastewater from oilwell production using segmented progressive sulfide removal process

Abstract

In response to the challenge of sulfide removal from oilwell produced wastewater, a segmented progressive sulfide removal process was adopted to treat the oilwell produced wastewater through UASB bioreactor and biomimetic reactor for segmented progressive reflux treatment. The experimental results showed that under the conditions of adopting the segmented progressive sulfide removal process, adjusting the S/N ratio of 5.2∶2 in the produced wastewater,supplementing a certain amount of HCO3-, and setting the reflux ratio of 2.7∶1, the removal efficiency of sulfide (S2-) in the produced wastewater arrived to 95.8%, and the maximum sulfide volumetric load was 6.46 kg/(m3·d). The removal efficiency of nitrate (NO3--N) reached 99.6%, with the maximum nitrate volumetric load of 1.13 kg/(m3·d). The key metabolite of sulfide metabolism was elemental sulfur, with a recovery rate of 83.8%, which was verified by SEM and XRD simultaneously, and followed by SO42- and S2O32-. While the key metabolite of nitrate metabolism was N2, with a yield of 72.4%, and followed by NO2-. The new process not only solved the problem of efficient removal of sulfide and nitrate from the produced wastewater, but also realized resource recovery(S0) and non-pollution emission of metabolic end products(such as N2).

Abstract

This study presents a novel approach for the reuse of uncontaminated fracturing flowback fluids to improve the inhibitory and lubricating properties of water-based drilling fluids (WBFs), curb environmental pollution arising from flowback fluids, and substantially mitigate the expenses associated with WBFs. The experimental design was optimized using orthogonal experiments and range analyses, whereby the modified rubber powder was set at 2.0%, xanthan gum at 0.15%, and a plant phenol to modified complexing agent ratio of 1:0.01. The assessment of the performance evaluation tests indicated that the use of uncontaminated fracturing flowback fluids as the base water can remarkably enhance the inhibitory and lubricating properties of WBFs. Precisely, this approach reduces the linear expansion rate from 62.31% to 21.25%, the reduction rate of extreme pressure lubrication coefficient by 87.98%, and the reduction rate of mud cake sticking factor by 59.86%. This investigation has established the potential environmental and economic benefits of reusing clean fracturing flowback fluids in WBFs.

Abstract

Nanosized energy storage, energy-harvesting, and functional devices are the three key components for integrated self-power systems. Here, we report on nanoscale electrochemical devices with a nearly three-fold enhanced stored charge under the field effect. We demonstrated the field-effect transistor can not only work as a functional component in nanodevices but also serve as an amplifier for the nanosized energy storage blocks. This unusual increase in energy storage is attributed to having a wide range of accessible electronic density of states (EDOS), hence redox reactions are occurring within the nanowire and not being confined to the surface. Initial results with MoS2 suggest that this field effect modulated energy storage mechanism may also apply to many other redox-active materials. Our work demonstrates the novel application of the field-effect in energy storage devices as a universal strategy to improve ion diffusion and the surface-active ion concentration of the active material, which can greatly enhance the charge storage ability of nanoscale devices. Abstract

Sodium ion capacitors (SICs) are designed to deliver both high energy and power densities at low cost. Electric double-layer capacitive cathodes are typically used in these devices, but they lead to very limited capacity. Herein, we apply a pseudocapacitive layered ferric vanadate (Fe-V-O) as cathode to construct non-aqueous SICs with both high energy and power densities. The Fe-V-O nanosheets cathode displays remarkable rate capability and cycling stability. The pseudocapacitive sodium storage mechanism of Fe-V-O, with over 83% of total capacity from capacitive contribution, is confirmed by kinetics analysis and ex situ characterizations. The capacitive-adsorption mechanism of hard carbon (HC) anode is demonstrated, and it delivers excellent rate capability. Based on as-synthesized materials, the assembled HC//Fe-V-O SIC delivers a maximum energy density of 194 Wh kg-1 and power density of 3,942 W kg-1. Our work highlights the advantages of pseudocapacitive cathodes for achieving both high energy and power densities in sodium storage devices.

49. Impact of the Nano-SiO2Particle Size on Oil Recovery Dynamics: Stability, Interfacial Tension, and Viscosity Reduction

Abstract

Nanofluids, as a novel material for tertiary oil recovery, have shown promising potential in enhancing water flooding efficiency in low-permeability reservoirs and increasing oil recovery rates. However, the risk of particle agglomeration arises when the particle size is too small. Challenges such as maintaining dispersion stability, efficient long-distance transportation of nanofluids, and preventing particle retention and agglomeration have emerged as key obstacles hindering the widespread adoption and large-scale implementation of nanoflooding technology in enhancing oil recovery in various reservoir conditions. With issues such as poor nanoparticle dispersion stability, costly reprocessing, and limited reservoir fluid compatibility addressed, nano-SiO2particles with average sizes of 45, 170, and 625 nm were synthesized using an enhanced particle size control technique based on the Stöber method. The impact of these different particle sizes on dispersion, emulsion stability, oil–water interfacial tension (IFT), and viscosity reduction before and after modification with fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether (AEO) were investigated. The findings demonstrate that modified nano-SiO2exhibits enhanced stability and reduced oil–water IFT. At a primary AEO concentration of 0.25 wt %, micellar structure formation synergizes with SiO2to achieve optimal IFT reduction. Smaller SiO2particle sizes are more amenable to surface modification and exhibit superior adsorption capacity at the oil–water interface compared to larger particles, facilitating the interaction with asphaltene aggregates and, thereby, enhancing crude oil flowability. In a study, 170 nm nanosized SiO2demonstrated a substantial viscosity reduction effect, with an apparent viscosity reduction rate of 95.3% at 0.0025 wt % SiO2+ 0.25 wt % AEO under test conditions of 45 °C and 5 s–1, indicating a significant viscosity reduction effect. This research introduces a novel concept for designing nanofluids to repel oil in low-permeability tight oil reservoirs, establishing an oil repulsion system. These findings not only advance the theoretical understanding of enhanced recovery in such reservoirs but also contribute to the efficient development of conventional and unconventional oil and gas fields, including deep shale gas and ultraheavy and thick oil reservoirs.
