1. Physiological response of sunflowers to broomrape parasitism and analysis of the key metabolic pathways

Abstract

[Objective] To study the physiological response of sunflowers to broomrape parasitism and the related metabolic pathways, as well as understanding the molecular mechanism of sunflower resistance to broomrape parasitism. [Methods] The broomrape-resisant (s41) and -sensitive (s26) sunflowers were used as the testing materials. Transcriptome analysis of 4 samples under the condition of parasitic stress was carried out, and physiological verification analysis of key metabolites was carried out. [Results] (1) Under inoculation, the plant height and root number of susceptible materials were affected significantly, and some of them were even unearthed, while the resistant materials had no obvious changes, and only a few were parasitized. (2) The number of DEGs was 6 362, 6 609, 5 490 and 5 469 by screening the differential genes among the samples. GO analysis showed that the four comparison groups, namely s26-s41, s26CK-s41CK, s26-s26CK, and s41-s41CK, had the most differential genes in biological processes, followed by cellular components, and less in molecular functions. KEGG analysis showed that infection had a great influence on plant signal transduction, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and sugar metabolism in sunflowers. (3) Physiological analyses found that the phenylalanine deaminase, cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase, glutathione, total phenols, and salicylic acid showed an upward trend, indicating that the stress tolerant system was activated under parasitism. However, the trend of the physiological indicators of the sensitive and tolerant materials were different. Also, the genes controlling the physiological responses were differentially expressed. [Conclusion] It was found that inoculation with broomrape significantly affected the plant height and root volume of the susceptible materials, while the resistant materials were not affected. The resistant materials were enhanced in root lignin synthesis, antioxidant enzyme activity, and the expression of key genes of phenylpropanoid metabolism, salicylic acid and signaling pathway, and hence increased the resistance to broomrape.

Abstract

ObjectiveTo analyze the current situation and development trend of food safety standards research in China from a bibliometric perspective.MethodsA total of 1 727 related articles from China National Knowledge Infrastructure were retrieved， screened， and analyzed based on institutions， authors， funds， journals， and keywords. VOSviewer and CiteSpace software were used to conduct a multidimensional knowledge graph visualization and metrological analysis of food safety standards related articles in China.ResultsChina’s food safety standards research had generally shown a growth trend， having gone through three stages of development： A start-up period， a period of rapid development， and a period of fluctuating development from 1993 to 2021. Food safety standards research was concentrated in three institutions： the National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment （CFSA）， the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences， and Renmin University of China. There were four major author networks， mainly represented by researchers from the CFSA. The first source of literature on food standards was the Chinese Journal of Food Hygiene， with 103 articles， accounting for 5.96% of the total number of articles published. The most frequent keywords were food additives （91 times）， national food safety standards （85 times） and food safety law （66 times）， forming 8 categories of research themes， which mainly centered on food safety standards. Keyword analysis revealed that hot topics of research emerging from 2016 to 2021 included tracking and evaluation， vitamins， nutrients， heavy metals， physical and chemical indicators， food labeling， and national standards.ConclusionThis study provides a reference for understanding the overall research status and development trend in the field of food safety standards in China.

3. Identification of potential hub genes involved in alcohol use disorder via bioinformatics analysis

Abstract

BackgroundAlcohol use disorder （AUD） is a type of chronic relapsing brain disorder. Genetic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of AUD. And screening for molecular markers of AUD is of great significance for further elucidating the pathogenesis of the disease， discovering novel therapeutic targets and preventing relapse.ObjectiveTo explore relevant hub genes and potential signal pathways associated with the development of AUD through bioinformatics analysis， and to provide a new direction for the prevention and treatment of AUD.MethodsThe GSE161986 dataset was acquired from the Gene Expression Omnibus （GEO） database. The limma package in R was utilized to identify differentially expressed genes （DEGs）. Gene set enrichment analysis （GSEA） was carried out using the Database for Annotation， Visualization and Integrated Discovery （DAVID）. A protein–protein interaction （PPI） network of DEGs was assessed using the STRING database and visualized by Cytoscape software. Finally， hub genes were validated in GSE44456 dataset.ResultsA total of 114 DEGs were identified. GSEA revealed that these genes were mainly involved in the regulation of signal transduction， protein binding， membrane trafficking and MAPK signaling pathway. PPI network and validation study indicated that GAD1， TIMP1 and CD44 were potential hub genes involved in AUD.ConclusionAberrant expression of GAD1 and TIMP1 as well as MAPK signaling pathway may play a key role in the pathogenesis of AUD， and may serve as potential molecular targets for the diagnosis and treatment of AUD. ［Funded by "Flying Project" of Shanghai Mental Health Center （number， 2022-FX-01）］

4. A study on predictive analysis and rules for international financial risk considering debt crisis

Abstract

This paper first establishes a system of international financial risk early warning indicators, constructs a VAR forecasting model for international financial risk, and uses the ADF test to identify the best amount of lags for the model before doing a smoothness test on the variables. The lagged values are used as independent variables to establish equations to describe the dynamic relationship between multiple variables. Then the model is tested for cointegration and Grange causality. The VAR model is then used to estimate the financial risk profile from the standpoint of a global economy and to examine the extent to which the debt crisis has affected international financial risk. The results show that at the 5% significant level, national debt expansion is the cause of asset price volatility, macroeconomic volatility, and debt risk. The forecasted inflation rate for 2023-2025 is 4.18, output gap is 4.94, and the policy interest rate is 4.18 for emerging Asian countries and regions.

5. Clinical characteristics and establishment of hospital transfer system of 659 transferred patients with COVID-19 in makeshift hospital

Abstract

Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics of patients in makeshift COVID-19 hospital and discuss how to establish and optimize the transfer system for a large number of critical cases. Methods From April 10 to May 24 of 2022, 659 patients with COVID-19 who needed to be transferred due to emergency in makeshift hospital located in National Convention and Exhibition Center were included, and their basic information, including the age, gender, underlying diseases and reasons for transfer, were analyzed. According to the key elements of the transfer process, a fast and efficient transfer system was established. Results Among the 659 transferred patients, 131 patients had respiratory system related diseases whose mean age was 58.47(95%CI: 55.62~61.33), with a male to female ratio of 1∶0.37(95/36). There were 528 patients had non-respiratory system diseases, whose mean age was 52.57(95%CI: 50.87~54.28), with a male to female ratio of 1∶1.01 (263/265). The types of diseases of the transferred patients mainly were 86 cases of endocrine diseases, 69 cases of cardiovascular system diseases, 34 cases of fever, 38 cases of nervous system diseases, 36 cases of tumor diseases, 34 cases of trauma, 32 cases of digestive system diseases and 199 cases of other diseases. Conclusion The effective treatment of patients in critical condition in makeshift hospital depends on the linkage mechanism run effectively, and the establishment of a fast, smooth, efficient and safe transport system can improve the treatment level of critical cases in large makeshift hospital.

6. The spatial distribution of interleukin-4 (IL-4) reference values in China based on a back propagation (BP) neural network

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the geospatial distribution of normal reference values of Interleukin 4 (IL-4) in healthy Chinese adults and to provide a basis for the development of standard references. IL-4 values of 5,221 healthy adults from 64 cities in China were collected and analyzed for a potential correlation with 24 topographical, climatic and soil factors. Seven of these factors were extracted and used to build a back propagation (BP) neural network model that was used to predict IL-4 reference values in healthy individuals from 2,317 observation sites nationwide. The predicted values were tested for normality and geographic distribution by analytic Kriging interpolation to map the geographic distribution of IL-4 reference values in healthy Chinese subjects. The results showed that IL-4 values generally decreased and then increased from the South to the North. We concluded that the BP neural network model applies to this approach, where certain geographical factors determine levels of various biochemical and immunological standards in healthy adults in regions with different topography, climate and soil indices.

7. Characteristics of Gut Microbiota and Their Association with Lymphocyte Subsets and Disease Activity in Ankylosing Spondylitis

Abstract

Objective To investigate the characteristics of gut microbiome and their associations with lymphocyte subsets and disease activity in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Methods This study was a retrospective analysis. The subjects of the study were AS patients who were hospitalized in the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from December 2019 to June 2020, as well as gender- and age-matched healthy controls (HCs). The fecal samples were collected, and the V3-V4 variable regions of 16S rRNA gene of gut microbiome were sequenced for bioinformatics analysis. Peripheral venous blood was collected from AS patients to determine peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets and disease activity indicators. Spearman correlation test was used to analyze the correlations between the relative abundances of gut microbiota and peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets as well as disease activity in AS patients. Results A total of 62 AS patients (11 with low disease activity, 26 with high disease activity, and 25 with extremely high disease activity) and 62 healthy people who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled. As for α-diversity, ACE and Chao1 indices were lower in AS than in HCs(P < 0.05). Bray curtis distance-based β-diversity analysis revealed significant difference in the microbial community between AS and HCs (P < 0.01). As for the composition of the gut microbiome, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla in the gut microbiota of both groups, but there were differences in the abundance of various bacteria at the phylum and genus levels. In Stamp analysis, fecal microbial communities in AS differed significantly from those in HCs, which were characterized by higher abundances of phylum Proteobacteria and Patescibacteria(all P < 0.05) and a lower abundance of phylum Firmicutes and Fusobacteriota (all P < 0.05). At the genus level, the abundances of Escherichia-Shigella, Klebsiella and Enterococcus were increased while those of Prevotella and Faecalibacterium were decreased in AS patients compared to HCs(all P < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that the relative abundances of Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcus and Klebsiella in AS patients were significantly positively correlated with disease activity or its related indicators(all P < 0.05). There were positive correlations between Agathobacter and T cell (r=0.302, P=0.017), CD4+T cell (r=0.310, P=0.014), B cell (r=0.292, P=0.021), Th2 cell (r=0.429, P < 0.001), Th17 cell (r=0.288, P=0.023), Streptococcus and B cell (r=0.270, P=0.034), Prevotella and Th1 cell (r=0.279, P=0.028), Th17 cell (r=0.262, P=0.040), CAG-352 and Th1 cell (r=0.283, P=0.030). There were negative correlations between Escherichia-Shigella and Th2 cell(r=-0.261, P=0.040), other Enterobacteriaceae and CD4+T cell (r=-0.255, P=0.046). Conclusions The diversity of gut microbiota is reduced in AS patients. The abundance of pathogenic bacteria in AS patients is increased, which is correlated with changes in peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets and disease activity. Dysbiosis may be involved in the occurrence and development of AS.

8. Real estate expansion and manufacturing wage increase in China: From the perspective of labor reallocation

Abstract

The massive expansion of China's real estate sector has raised manufacturing wage through the channel of reallocating low-skilled labor from manufacturing sectors to the real estate sector. Using data of manufacturing firms in 35 major cities from 2000–2007, we find that the expansion of the real estate sector resulted in higher manufacturing wage. Additionally, we find that this positive effect was more pronounced among labor-intensive firms, among non-SOEs, and among firms in cities with a low development level of the labor market. By investigating the occupation choice of rural-to-urban migrant workers, we find that real estate expansion made migrant workers less likely to choose manufacturing jobs while more likely to choose construction jobs, which further confirms the labor reallocation story.

Abstract

With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technologies such as ChatGPT, AI agents and video generation,contemporary mobile systems have begun integrating these AI capabilities on local devices to enhance privacy and reduce response latency. To meet the computational demands of AI tasks, current mobile SoCs are equipped with diverse AI accelerators, including GPUs and Neural Processing Units (NPUs). However, there has not been a comprehensive characterization of these heterogeneous processors, and existing designs typically only leverage a single AI accelerator for LLM inference, leading to suboptimal use of computational resources and memory bandwidth. In this paper, we first summarize key performance characteristics of mobile SoC, including heterogeneous processors, unified memory, synchronization, etc. Drawing on these observations, we propose different tensor partition strategies to fulfill the distinct requirements of the prefill and decoding phases. We further design a fast synchronization mechanism that leverages the unified memory address provided by mobile SoCs. By employing these techniques, we present HeteroLLM, the fastest LLM inference engine in mobile devices which supports both layer-level and tensor-level heterogeneous execution. Evaluation results show that HeteroLLM achieves 9.99 and 4.36 performance improvement over other mobile-side LLM inference engines: MLC and MNN.

10. De-singularity Subgradient for the $q$-th-Powered $\ell_p$-Norm Weber Location Problem

Abstract

The Weber location problem is widely used in several artificial intelligence scenarios. However, the gradient of the objective does not exist at a considerable set of singular points. Recently, a de-singularity subgradient method has been proposed to fix this problem, but it can only handle the $q$-th-powered $\ell_2$-norm case ($1\leqslant q<2$), which has only finite singular points. In this paper, we further establish the de-singularity subgradient for the $q$-th-powered $\ell_p$-norm case with $1\leqslant q\leqslant p$ and $1\leqslant p<2$, which includes all the rest unsolved situations in this problem. This is a challenging task because the singular set is a continuum. The geometry of the objective function is also complicated so that the characterizations of the subgradients, minimum and descent direction are very difficult. We develop a $q$-th-powered $\ell_p$-norm Weiszfeld Algorithm without Singularity ($q$P$p$NWAWS) for this problem, which ensures convergence and the descent property of the objective function. Extensive experiments on six real-world data sets demonstrate that $q$P$p$NWAWS successfully solves the singularity problem and achieves a linear computational convergence rate in practical scenarios., Comment: AAAI 2025

11. Rapid determination of the residues of β-blockers in porcine tissues by new solid phase extraction and ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract

ObjectiveA sensitive and rapid method was developed for the determination of 17 β-adrenergic receptor blockers(β-blockers) by ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS).MethodsThe β-blockers were extracted from porcine sample with acetonitrile, purified by solid phase extraction column Oasis Prime HLB. The analytes were then separated by the Endeavorsil C18 chromarographic column with methanol and 0.1% formic acid as gradient mobile phase. The ion fragment information analytes were obtained using ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry under multiple reaction monitoring mode and the isotope internal standards were used to quantify by calibration curves.ResultsThe linear ranges of 17 β-blockers were from 0.2 to 20 μg/kg, with correlation coefficient (R)>0.999. The limits of detection (LOD) were 0.05-0.07 μg/kg, and the limits of quantification (LOQ) were 0.15-0.2 μg/kg. The average recoveries of β-blockers(added into blank porcine samples at three concentration levels) ranged from 84.97% to 123.40%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 0.41% to 13.94%.ConclusionThe method is simple, sensitive, accurate and is suitable for the confirmation and quantification of β-blockers in porcine samples.

Abstract

The Tian Ma Radio Telescope (TMRT), which is mainly used for deep space exploration and radio astronomy observations, is the largest fully steerable radio telescope in Asia. For promoting the automation of the telescope, an automatic early warning system is designed and implemented. The system can conveniently aggregate heterogeneous sensor data, make use of established strategies to implement an alert system, and send real-time alarms through multiple channels, which is helpful to promote unmanned operation. In addition, we adopt DevOps (a compound of development (Dev) and operations (Ops) which means end-to-end automation in software development and delivery) to simplify the development, upgrading, and maintenance of the telescope automatic early warning system.

14. A Globally Optimal Portfolio for m-Sparse Sharpe Ratio Maximization

Abstract

The Sharpe ratio is an important and widely-used risk-adjusted return in financial engineering. In modern portfolio management, one may require an m-sparse (no more than m active assets) portfolio to save managerial and financial costs. However, few existing methods can optimize the Sharpe ratio with the m-sparse constraint, due to the nonconvexity and the complexity of this constraint. We propose to convert the m-sparse fractional optimization problem into an equivalent m-sparse quadratic programming problem. The semi-algebraic property of the resulting objective function allows us to exploit the Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz property to develop an efficient Proximal Gradient Algorithm (PGA) that leads to a portfolio which achieves the globally optimal m-sparse Sharpe ratio under certain conditions. The convergence rates of PGA are also provided. 15. A Krasnoselskii-Mann Proximity Algorithm for Markowitz Portfolios with Adaptive Expected Return Level

Abstract

Markowitz's criterion aims to balance expected return and risk when optimizing the portfolio. The expected return level is usually fixed according to the risk appetite of an investor, then the risk is minimized at this fixed return level. However, the investor may not know which return level is suitable for her/him and the current financial circumstance. It motivates us to find a novel approach that adaptively optimizes this return level and the portfolio at the same time. It not only relieves the trouble of deciding the return level during an investment but also gets more adaptive to the ever-changing financial market than a subjective return level. In order to solve the new model, we propose an exact, convergent, and efficient Krasnoselskii-Mann Proximity Algorithm based on the proximity operator and Krasnoselskii-Mann momentum technique. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method achieves significant improvements over state-of-the-art methods in portfolio optimization. 16. Mixture of Prompt Learning for Vision Language Models

Abstract

As powerful pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs) like CLIP gain prominence, numerous studies have attempted to combine VLMs for downstream tasks. Among these, prompt learning has been validated as an effective method for adapting to new tasks, which only requiring a small number of parameters. However, current prompt learning methods face two challenges: first, a single soft prompt struggles to capture the diverse styles and patterns within a dataset; second, fine-tuning soft prompts is prone to overfitting. To address these challenges, we propose a mixture of soft prompt learning method incorporating a routing module. This module is able to capture a dataset's varied styles and dynamically selects the most suitable prompts for each instance. Additionally, we introduce a novel gating mechanism to ensure the router selects prompts based on their similarity to hard prompt templates, which both retaining knowledge from hard prompts and improving selection accuracy. We also implement semantically grouped text-level supervision, initializing each soft prompt with the token embeddings of manually designed templates from its group and applied a contrastive loss between the resulted text feature and hard prompt encoded text feature. This supervision ensures that the text features derived from soft prompts remain close to those from their corresponding hard prompts, preserving initial knowledge and mitigating overfitting. Our method has been validated on 11 datasets, demonstrating evident improvements in few-shot learning, domain generalization, and base-to-new generalization scenarios compared to existing baselines. 17. Assessment on erosion risk based on GIS in typical Karst region of Southwest China

Abstract

This study evaluates the potential danger of soil erosion with regard to the current poor situation in the typical karst area of Anshun City in Guizhou Province (China) and provides a reference for the prevention and control of soil erosion in karst areas. The criteria of the Standards for classification and gradation of soil erosion and Techniques standard for comprehensive control of soil erosion and water loss in karst area in non-karst and karst areas, respectively, GIS, and high-resolution remote sensing image interpretation results of land use are used to explain the intensity of soil erosion and soil loss tolerance. Results show that soil erosion rate calculated by different standards in the karst area is consistent with the monitoring value. The average erosion modulus of Guizhou Anshun is 446.83 t/(km2·a), the soil erosion area is 2,861.01 km2 with a ratio of 30.9%, the soil erosion potential danger index (SEPDI) value is relatively small and mainly includes free- and light-danger types, and the average SEPDI value is 1.7. Abstract

Neuromorphic computing exhibits great potential to provide high-performance benefits in various applications beyond neural networks. However, a general-purpose program execution model that aligns with the features of neuromorphic computing is required to bridge the gap between program versatility and neuromorphic hardware efficiency. The dataflow model offers a potential solution, but it faces high graph complexity and incompatibility with neuromorphic hardware when dealing with control flow programs, which decreases the programmability and performance. Here, we present a dataflow model tailored for neuromorphic hardware, called neuromorphic dataflow, which provides a compact, concise, and neuromorphic-compatible program representation for control logic. The neuromorphic dataflow introduces "when" and "where" primitives, which restructure the view of control. The neuromorphic dataflow embeds these primitives in the dataflow schema with the plasticity inherited from the spiking algorithms. Our method enables the deployment of general-purpose programs on neuromorphic hardware with both programmability and plasticity, while fully utilizing the hardware's potential.

Abstract

Big mobility datasets (BMD) have shown many advantages in studying human mobility and evaluating the performance of transportation systems. However, the quality of BMD remains poorly understood. This study evaluates biases in BMD and develops mitigation methods. Using Google and Apple mobility data as examples, this study compares them with benchmark data from governmental agencies. Spatio-temporal discrepancies between BMD and benchmark are observed and their impacts on transportation applications are investigated, emphasizing the urgent need to address these biases to prevent misguided policymaking. This study further proposes and tests a bias mitigation method. It is shown that the mitigated BMD could generate valuable insights into large-scale public transit systems across 100+ US counties, revealing regional disparities of the recovery of transit systems from the COVID-19. This study underscores the importance of caution when using BMD in transportation research and presents effective mitigation strategies that would benefit practitioners., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment under construction in South China. This paper presents an updated estimate of JUNO's sensitivity to neutrino mass ordering using the reactor antineutrinos emitted from eight nuclear reactor cores in the Taishan and Yangjiang nuclear power plants. This measurement is planned by studying the fine interference pattern caused by quasi-vacuum oscillations in the oscillated antineutrino spectrum at a baseline of 52.5~km and is completely independent of the CP violating phase and neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{23}$. The sensitivity is obtained through a joint analysis of JUNO and Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) detectors utilizing the best available knowledge to date about the location and overburden of the JUNO experimental site, local and global nuclear reactors, JUNO and TAO detector responses, expected event rates and spectra of signals and backgrounds, and systematic uncertainties of analysis inputs. Abstract

This paper presents an energy resolution study of the JUNO experiment, incorporating the latest knowledge acquired during the detector construction phase. The determination of neutrino mass ordering in JUNO requires an exceptional energy resolution better than 3\% at 1~MeV. To achieve this ambitious goal, significant efforts have been undertaken in the design and production of the key components of the JUNO detector. Various factors affecting the detection of inverse beta decay signals have an impact on the energy resolution, extending beyond the statistical fluctuations of the detected number of photons, such as the properties of the liquid scintillator, performance of photomultiplier tubes, and the energy reconstruction algorithm. To account for these effects, a full JUNO simulation and reconstruction approach is employed. This enables the modeling of all relevant effects and the evaluation of associated inputs to accurately estimate the energy resolution. The results of study reveal an energy resolution of 2.95\% at 1~MeV. Furthermore, this study assesses the contribution of major effects to the overall energy resolution budget. This analysis serves as a reference for interpreting future measurements of energy resolution during JUNO data collection. Moreover, it provides a guideline for comprehending the energy resolution characteristics of liquid scintillator-based detectors.

Abstract

We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. Abstract

The $\ell_0$-constrained mean-CVaR model poses a significant challenge due to its NP-hard nature, typically tackled through combinatorial methods characterized by high computational demands. From a markedly different perspective, we propose an innovative autonomous sparse mean-CVaR portfolio model, capable of approximating the original $\ell_0$-constrained mean-CVaR model with arbitrary accuracy. The core idea is to convert the $\ell_0$ constraint into an indicator function and subsequently handle it through a tailed approximation. We then propose a proximal alternating linearized minimization algorithm, coupled with a nested fixed-point proximity algorithm (both convergent), to iteratively solve the model. Autonomy in sparsity refers to retaining a significant portion of assets within the selected asset pool during adjustments in pool size. 30. A De-singularity Subgradient Approach for the Extended Weber Location Problem

Abstract

The extended Weber location problem is a classical optimization problem that has inspired some new works in several machine learning scenarios recently. However, most existing algorithms may get stuck due to the singularity at the data points when the power of the cost function $1\leqslant q<2$, such as the widely-used iterative Weiszfeld approach. In this paper, we establish a de-singularity subgradient approach for this problem. We also provide a complete proof of convergence which has fixed some incomplete statements of the proofs for some previous Weiszfeld algorithms. Moreover, we deduce a new theoretical result of superlinear convergence for the iteration sequence in a special case where the minimum point is a singular point. We conduct extensive experiments in a real-world machine learning scenario to show that the proposed approach solves the singularity problem, produces the same results as in the non-singularity cases, and shows a reasonable rate of linear convergence. 31. Invariant Risk Minimization Is A Total Variation Model

Abstract

Invariant risk minimization (IRM) is an arising approach to generalize invariant features to different environments in machine learning. While most related works focus on new IRM settings or new application scenarios, the mathematical essence of IRM remains to be properly explained. We verify that IRM is essentially a total variation based on $L^2$ norm (TV-$\ell_2$) of the learning risk with respect to the classifier variable. Moreover, we propose a novel IRM framework based on the TV-$\ell_1$ model. It not only expands the classes of functions that can be used as the learning risk and the feature extractor, but also has robust performance in denoising and invariant feature preservation based on the coarea formula. We also illustrate some requirements for IRM-TV-$\ell_1$ to achieve out-of-distribution generalization. Abstract

Horizontal spray tower technology is a new flue gas desulfurization system technology that was developed at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, Center for the Environment, overcoming the shortcomings of the vertical spray tower with regard to high desulfurization efficiency, small pressure loss, low operation cost, and easy maintenance, among others. However, the actual project still requires further improvement. In order to study the influence of the layout pattern of different spray on the internal flow field of the horizontal spray tower, the physical model of the horizontal spray tower was built, the grid was divided by Icem software, the Fluent software was used to simulate the numerical simulation. K-epsilon turbulence and stochastic models were selected for numerical simulation. The simulation results, obtained by the SIMPLE algorithm, show that the double spray sets the spray cone angle at 90°, the upper spray height is at 0.9 m from the top, the lower part of the spraying height is at 2.4 m from the top layer, the spray distance is 1.5 m, the desulfurization tower effectively reduces the pressure loss and energy consumption, the absorption area of the flue gas flow rate is uniform, and the gas-liquid contact frequency increases. The gas temperature is suitable for a gas-liquid reaction. The overall increase in the efficiency of flue gas desulphurization provides guidance for the design of practical engineering applications.

Abstract

Agent-based models (ABMs) stand as an essential paradigm for proposing and validating hypothetical solutions or policies aimed at addressing challenges posed by complex systems and achieving various objectives. This process demands labor-intensive endeavors and multidisciplinary expertise. Large language models (LLMs) encapsulating cross-domain knowledge and programming proficiency could potentially alleviate the difficulty of this process. However, LLMs excel in handling sequential information, making it challenging for analyzing the intricate interactions and nonlinear dynamics inherent in ABMs. Additionally, due to the lack of self-evaluation capability of LLMs, relying solely on LLMs is insufficient to effectively accomplish this process. In this paper, we present SAGE, a general solution-oriented ABM generation framework designed for automatic modeling and generating solutions for targeted problems. Unlike approaches reliant on expert handcrafting or resource-intensive neural network training, SAGE establishes a verifier-assisted iterative in-context learning process employing large language models (LLMs) to leverages their inherent cross-domain knowledge for tackling intricate demands from diverse domain scenarios. In SAGE, we introduce an semi-structured conceptual representation expliciting the intricate structures of ABMs and an objective representation to guide LLMs in modeling scenarios and proposing hypothetical solutions through in-context learning. To ensure the model executability and solution feasibility, SAGE devises a two-level verifier with chain-of-thought prompting tailored to the complex interactions and non-linear dynamics of ABMs, driving the iterative generation optimization. Moreover, we construct an evaluation dataset of solution-oriented ABMs from open sources.It contains practical models across various domains.

37. Diagnosing and Rectifying Fake OOD Invariance: A Restructured Causal Approach

Abstract

Invariant representation learning (IRL) encourages the prediction from invariant causal features to labels de-confounded from the environments, advancing the technical roadmap of out-of-distribution (OOD) generalization. Despite spotlights around, recent theoretical results verified that some causal features recovered by IRLs merely pretend domain-invariantly in the training environments but fail in unseen domains. The \emph{fake invariance} severely endangers OOD generalization since the trustful objective can not be diagnosed and existing causal surgeries are invalid to rectify. In this paper, we review a IRL family (InvRat) under the Partially and Fully Informative Invariant Feature Structural Causal Models (PIIF SCM /FIIF SCM) respectively, to certify their weaknesses in representing fake invariant features, then, unify their causal diagrams to propose ReStructured SCM (RS-SCM). RS-SCM can ideally rebuild the spurious and the fake invariant features simultaneously. Given this, we further develop an approach based on conditional mutual information with respect to RS-SCM, then rigorously rectify the spurious and fake invariant effects. It can be easily implemented by a small feature selection subnet introduced in the IRL family, which is alternatively optimized to achieve our goal. Abstract

This study reports the performance and light yield of 1% concentration water-based liquid scintillator (WbLS) deployed in a 1000-liter detector. A light yield of 99$\pm$15 photons per MeV is determined by comparing data with simulation. This result aligns with our previous light yield determination using smaller detectors, thus establishing a solid foundation for the ongoing development and deployment of WbLS in larger-scale detectors.
