For over 50 years, the Xianyang city on the Chinese loess plateau, has been deeply affected by land subsidence and its associated ground fissures. In this study, 67 Sentinel-1A images from 2015 to 2022 were analysed to obtain the spatio-temporal evolution of land subsidence. Subsidence centers identified in Yunyang town and Luqiao town exhibit annual subsidence rates of −31 mm/a and −26.7 mm/a, respectively, culminating in total subsidence of −258 mm in Yunyang town and −139 mm in Luqiao town. Moreover, time series analysis revealed that both towns exhibit pronounced seasonal subsidence patterns. It is believed that human cultivation and groundwater overuse, combined with the effects of active faults, have led to uneven land subsidence. Then, the gradient of land subsidence and its potential relation to ground fissure hazards were evaluated. The results highlight a strong spatial correlation between high subsidence gradient areas and dense ground fissure distribution. Therefore, we proposed for the first time to introduce the land subsidence gradient factors for the susceptibility mapping of ground fissures using the artificial neural network algorithm. The susceptibility zonation results show that integrating the gradient factor can improve the rationality of the susceptibility evaluation. The above understanding provides valuable support for disaster prevention and mitigation in urban areas affected by land subsidence and ground fissures in loess regions.

Since the beginning of spring 2022, successive landslides have occurred in the eastern pit slope of the Wolong Coal Mine in Qipanjing Town, Otog Banner, Inner Mongolia, which has adversely affected the mine’s production safety. This study aims to reveal the deformation patterns and failure mechanisms of landslides. Firstly, this study establishes the stratigraphic structure of the eastern pit slope of the Wolong Coal Mine using extensive field geological surveys combined with unmanned aerial vehicle photography, drilling, and comprehensive physical exploration techniques. Indoor geotechnical tests and microscopic experiments reveal that rock mass typically exhibits the characteristics of expansibility and water sensitivity. Moreover, the mechanical parameters of the rock mass were determined using a combination of the window sampling method, the Geological Strength Index, and the Hoek–Brown strength criterion estimation theory. Finally, this study consolidates the previously mentioned insights and employs FLAC3D (7.0) software to assess the stress–strain characteristics of the excavated slope. The results indicate that the deformation mode of the Wolong open pit coal mine is the toppling failure of soft-hard-interbedded anti-inclined layered rock slopes. The unloading effect and rock expansion-induced softening lead to stress concentration at the slope corners and more substantial deformation, thereby accelerating upper slope deformation. The deformation and destabilization process of landslides is categorized into four stages: the initial deformation stage, the development stage of lateral shear misalignment, the development stage of horizontal tensile-shear damage, and the slip surface development to the preslip stage. This research offers valuable references and engineering insights for future scientific investigations and the prevention of similar slope-related geological hazards.

Landslide susceptibility mapping based on static influence factors often exhibits issues of low accuracy and classification errors. To enhance the accuracy of susceptibility mapping, this study proposes a refined approach that integrates categorical boosting (CatBoost) with small baseline subset interferometric synthetic-aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) results, achieving more precise and detailed susceptibility mapping. We utilized optical remote sensing images, the information value (IV) model, and fourteen influencing factors (elevation, slope, aspect, roughness, profile curvature, plane curvature, lithology, distance to faults, land use type, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), topographic wetness index (TWI), distance to rivers, distance to roads, and annual precipitation) to establish the IV-CatBoost landslide susceptibility mapping method. Subsequently, the Sentinel-1A ascending data from January 2021 to March 2023 were utilized to derive the deformation rates within the city of Lishui in the southern region of China. Based on the outcomes derived from IV-CatBoost and SBAS-InSAR, a discernment matrix was formulated to rectify inaccuracies in the partitioned regions, leading to the creation of a refined information value CatBoost integration (IVCI) landslide susceptibility mapping model. In the end, we utilized optical remote sensing interpretations alongside surface deformations obtained from SBAS-InSAR to cross-verify the excellence and accuracy of IVCI. Research findings indicate a distinct enhancement in susceptibility levels across 165,784 grids (149.20 km2) following the integration of SBAS-InSAR correction. The enhanced susceptibility classes and the spectral characteristics of remote sensing images closely correspond to the trends of SBAS-InSAR cumulative deformation, reflecting a high level of consistency with field-based conditions. These improved classifications effectively enhance the refinement of landslide susceptibility mapping. The refined susceptibility mapping approach proposed in this paper effectively enhances landslide prediction accuracy, providing valuable technical reference for landslide hazard prevention and control in the Lishui region.

Frequent rockfall events pose a major threat to the safe operation of the Taihang Grand Canyon Scenic Area (GCSA) in China. The traditional techniques for identifying potential rockfall sources and hazard assessment methods are often challenged in the alpine canyon landform. This study aims to establish an early identification framework for regional potential rockfall sources applicable to the canyon region and to assess rockfall hazards in potentially hazardous areas using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry. Specifically, by incorporating high-precision topographic information and geotechnical properties, the slope angle distribution method was used for static identification of potential rockfall sources. Moreover, SBAS-InSAR technology was used to describe the activity of potential rockfall sources. Finally, taking the key potentially hazardous area of the Sky City scenic spot as an example, the Rockfall Analyst tool was used to analyze the rockfall frequency, bounce height and energy characteristics based on the high-precision UAV 3D real scene model, and the analytic hierarchy process was introduced to achieve quantitative rockfall hazard assessment. The results show that the potential rockfall source areas in the Taihang GCSA is 33.47 km2 (21.47%), mainly distributed in strips on the cliffs on both sides of the canyon, of which the active rockfall source area is 2.96 km2 (8.84%). Taking the scenic spot of Sky City as example, the proposed UAV-based real scene modeling technology was proven to be able to quickly and accurately construct a 3D high-precision model of the canyon area. Moreover, the 3D rockfall simulation showed that the high-energy rockfall area was mainly distributed at the foot of the steep cliff, which mainly threatens the tourist distribution center below. The early identification and quantitative evaluation scheme of rockfall events proposed in this study can provide technical reference for the prevention and control of rockfall hazards in similar alpine valley areas.
