Background: Little is known about the long-term risks of stroke and ischemic heart disease (IHD) in women who had a hysterectomy alone (HA) or with bilateral oophorectomy (HBO) for benign diseases, particularly in China where the burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is high. We assessed mean levels of cardiovascular risk factors and relative risks of stroke and IHD in Chinese women who had a HA or HBO. Methods: A total of 302 510 women, aged 30 to 79 years were enrolled in the China Kadoorie Biobank from 2004 to 2008 and followed up for a mean of 9.8 years. The analysis involved premenopausal women without prior cardiovascular disease or cancer at enrollment. We calculated adjusted hazard ratios for incident cases of CVD and their pathological types (ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and IHD) after HA and HBO. Analyses were stratified by age and region and adjusted for levels of education, household income, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, diabetes, self-reported health, and number of pregnancies. Results: Among 282 722 eligible women, 8478 had HA, and 1360 had HBO. Women who had HA had 9% higher risk of CVD after HA (hazard ratio, 1.09 [95% CI, 1.06–1.12]) and 19% higher risk of CVD after HBO (1.19 [95% CI, 1.12–1.26]) compared with women who did not. Both HA and HBO were associated with higher risks of ischemic stroke and IHD but not with hemorrhagic stroke. The relative risks of CVD associated with HA and HBO were more extreme at younger age of surgery. Conclusions: Women who had either HA or HBO have higher risks of ischemic stroke and IHD, and these risks should be evaluated when discussing these interventions. Additional screening for risk factors for CVD should be considered in women following HA and HBO operations, especially if such operations are performed at younger age.

Inspired by the distinct functions of desert beetles with efficient droplet nucleation and lotus leaves with excellent droplet removal, an integrated method is presented for the design of a superhydrophobic surface decorated with hydrophilic groups that can efficiently nucleate and remove water droplets. We constructed a cellulose-based superhydrophobic surface containing numerous olefin terminal groups by solvent exchange and spray coating. This surface is different from most of the reported biomimicking water harvesting surfaces that rely on complicated lithography and micropatterning techniques requiring special instruments. The obtained superhydrophobic surface was further modified using various thiol compounds via a thiol-ene reaction to manipulate the water harvesting property. The modified surfaces containing hydrophobic groups (e.g., 1-octadecanethiol and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol) or a strong hydrophilic group (e.g., 3-mercaptopropionic acid and 6-mercapto-1-hexanol) exhibited insufficient fog collecting abilities due to poor water droplet nucleation or strong water adhesion. By contrast, the modified surface decorated with moderately hydrophilic amino groups combines the advantages of biological surfaces with distinct wetting features (such as fog-harvesting beetles and water-repellent lotus leaves), resulting in accelerated water nucleation and less compromise of the water removal efficiency. Molecular dynamic simulations revealed that the efficient droplet nucleation is attributed to the hydrophilic amino groups whereas the rapid droplet removal is due to the maintained superhydrophobicity of the amino group-modified surface. This strategy of decorating a superhydrophobic surface with moderately hydrophilic functional groups provides insight into the manipulation of droplet nucleation and removal for water collection efficiency.

Lower consumption of whole grains is associated with higher risks of diabetes and coronary heart disease in Western populations, but evidence is still limited for stroke. Moreover, little is known in China, where the rates of cardiometabolic diseases are high and the grain types consumed are different from those in Western countries.To examine the associations between coarse-grain (e.g., millet, corn, and sorghum) consumption and incident cardiometabolic diseases among Chinese adults.The prospective China Kadoorie Biobank enrolled0.5 million adults aged 30-79 years from 10 urban and rural areas during 2004-2008. At baseline, consumption frequencies (in 5 categories from "never" to "daily") of 12 major food groups, including coarse grains, were collected using a validated FFQ. After a median of 11 years of follow-up, 17,149 cases of diabetes, 29,876 ischemic strokes, 6097 hemorrhagic strokes, and 6704 major coronary events were recorded among 461,047 participants without a prevalence of major chronic diseases at baseline. Cox regression analyses were used to yield adjusted HRs for each disease associated with coarse-grain consumption.Overall, 13.8% of participants reported regularly consuming (i.e., ≥4 days/week, regular consumers) and 29.4% reported never or rarely consuming coarse grains (i.e., nonconsumers) at baseline. Compared with nonconsumers, regular consumers had lower risks of diabetes (adjusted HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.78-0.98) and ischemic stroke (adjusted HR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.81-0.93), but not hemorrhagic stroke (adjusted HR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.76-1.20) or major coronary events (adjusted HR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.81-1.12). For diabetes and ischemic stroke, each 100 g/day increase in the usual intake of coarse grains was associated with 14% (adjusted HR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.76-0.97) and 13% (adjusted HR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.81-0.94) lower risks, respectively, with similar results in various subgroups.In Chinese adults, higher coarse-grain consumption is associated with lower risks of diabetes and ischemic stroke, supporting the promotion of coarse-grain consumption in China.

Rheological behaviors of microbial polysaccharides with different substituents in aqueous solutions have been systematically investigated. Both the saccharide side chains and acetyl substituents improve the gelation of welan gum (WG), diutan gum (DG) and gellan gum (GG) in pure water at 25 °C. For the polysaccharides with saccharide side chains (WG and DG), the relationship between the apparent viscosity and concentration conforms to the linear equation, while that of the polysaccharide with acetyl (GG) is exponential. More importantly, the roles of substituents on the stability of the molecular conformation of polysaccharides are significantly depended on the surrounding environment. Disaccharide side chains promote the stability of helical conformation and gel aggregates of GG at high temperature (85 °C) or in the presence of inorganic salts with the ionic strength of 2.0 mol L−1. The stability of gel structure containing acetyl (GG) shows higher temperature/salt sensitivity. Additionally, deacylated gellan gum (GG(d)) solutions transform into hydrogels in the presence of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). This study will help to obtain a better understanding on the rheological properties of polysaccharides with respect to the conformation and applications.

Optically transparent wood (TW) is an emerging candidate for applications in energy efficient buildings. In this study, anti-ultraviolet and infrared heat shielding TW was prepared based on the delignification of the wood's substrate. This was followed by infiltration of pre-polymerized methyl methacrylate (PMMA) with modified antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) nanoparticles. The ATO addition enhanced the interfacial bonding among the compounds, which improved the fracture strength, leading to a high fracture strength of 96.4 MPa and modulus of 4.27 GPa with addition of 0.3% ATO. Furthermore, the obtained ATO/TW exhibited high transparency, excellent near infrared (NIR) heat shielding performance, and ultraviolet (UV) shielding properties according to the ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer measurement, the infrared heat shielding simulation test, and the UV-shielding test. The TW treated with 0.3% ATO still maintained a very low thermal conductivity of around 0.2 W m−1 K−1. After addition of 0.7% ATO, the obtained TW had a quite low UV transmittance of ＜20%. The Aspergillus niger maintained high viability after UV irradiation treatment when shielded with TW treated with 0.7% ATO. The findings indicate that the multifunctional and durable ATO/TW has a potential to be used as energy-saving building material.

In winemaking, large amounts of grape skin (GS) are produced as by-products, which contain not only abundant degradable cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin but various functional polyphenols. In contrast to most studies focusing on the utilization of extractives, the current study investigates the use of an ultrasonicated grape skin (UGS) containing all components to develop a multifunctional composite film. Owing to dissociation during ultrasonication, all GS components were well dispersed in water to obtain the UGS suspension. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that the celluloses were successfully transformed into cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), which can improve the uniformity of the composite film. Subsequently, biodegradable and multifunctional composite films were fabricated by combining the UGS and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The UGS and PVA formed a good interface owing to strong hydrogen bonds, and the resulting films exhibited excellent thermal stability and moisture-sensitive mechanical properties. The polyphenols in the UGS suspension endowed the composite film with multiple functions, including pH-responsive color change, excellent antioxidant activity, ultraviolet shielding, and antimicrobial properties. The use of PVA enhanced the flexibility, strength, and elongation of the UGS film. The easily prepared, tailored, multifunctional, and biodegradable UGS/PVA composite film exhibits excellent potential for application in agriculture, cosmetics, and healthcare.

Background and aims Observational studies have associated resting heart rate with incident diabetes. Whether the associations are causal remains unclear. We aimed to examine the shape and strength of the associations and assessed the causal relevance of such associations in Chinese adults. Methods and results The China Kadoorie Biobank enrolled 512,891 adults in China. Cox proportional hazard regression models was conducted to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for the associations of resting heart rate with type 2 diabetes and total diabetes. Among 92,724 participants, 36 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to resting heart rate were used to construct genetic risk score. We used Mendelian randomization analyses to make the causal inferences. During a median follow-up of 9 years, 7872 incident type 2 diabetes and 13,349 incident total diabetes were documented. After regression dilution bias adjustment, each 10 bpm higher heart rate was associated with about a 26% higher risk of type 2 diabetes (HR, 1.26 [95% CI, 1.23, 1.29]) and 23% higher risk of total diabetes (HR, 1.23 [95% CI, 1.20, 1.26]). Instrumental variable analyses showed participants at top quintile compared with those at bottom quintile had 30% higher risk for type 2 diabetes (HR, 1.30 [95% CI, 1.17, 1.43]), and 10% higher risk for total diabetes (HR, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.02, 1.20]). Conclusions This study provides evidence that resting heart rate is an important risk factor for diabetes risk. The results suggest that novel treatment approaches targeting reduction of high heart rate for incidence of diabetes may be worth further investigation.

The solid wastes of Chinese materia dedica industrialization represented by Salvia miltiorrhiza residues have a strong small-molecule bio-recalcitrance in the process of high-value utilization of biotransformation. Highly tolerant strains were bred to break bio-recalcitrance of Salvia miltiorrhiza residues and produce high-value added cellulose, which has a significant significance for recycling and industrial utilization of solid waste. In this study, a strain of fungus, Penicillium expansum SZ13, was found with small-molecule antibacterial substance tanshinone contained in Salvia miltiorrhiza residues by a biological method. The optimal enzyme production process and peak period of SZ13 were determined. It was found that SZ13 could maintain peak enzyme production for 5 days by degrading residues under the conditions of temperature 35 ℃, rotation speed 180 r·min~(-1), 5% of residues addition, and 5% seed solution addition. Meanwhile, the ability of SZ13 to degrade the enzyme production of multiple types of residues was explored. The results showed a high enzyme activity and stable enzyme production of SZ13 in the process of degrading residues. SZ13 could efficiently utilize various types of Chinese medicine residues, such as Salvia miltiorrhiza residues, to realize the high-value utilization of cellulose in multiple types of residues.

ObjectiveTo examine the associations between egg consumption and cardiovascular disease (CVD), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), major coronary events (MCE), haemorrhagic stroke as well as ischaemic stroke.MethodsDuring 2004–2008, over 0.5 million adults aged 30–79 years were recruited from 10 diverse survey sites in China. Participants were asked about the frequency of egg consumption and were followed up via linkages to multiple registries and active investigation. Among 461 213 participants free of prior cancer, CVD and diabetes, a total of 83 977 CVD incident cases and 9985 CVD deaths were documented, as well as 5103 MCE. Stratified Cox regression was performed to yield adjusted hazard ratios for CVD endpoints associated with egg consumption.ResultsAt baseline, 13.1% of participants reported daily consumption (usual amount 0.76 egg/day) and 9.1% reported never or very rare consumption (usual amount 0.29 egg/day). Compared with non-consumers, daily egg consumption was associated with lower risk of CVD (HR 0.89, 95% CI 0.87 to 0.92). Corresponding multivariate-adjusted HRs (95% CI) for IHD, MCE, haemorrhagic stroke and ischaemic stroke were 0.88 (0.84 to 0.93), 0.86 (0.76 to 0.97), 0.74 (0.67 to 0.82) and 0.90 (0.85 to 0.95), respectively. How to protect the sensitivity of gas sensing system in the case of persistent leakage in a closed environment? Background Lean body mass has been identified as a key determinant of left ventricular mass and wall thickness. However, the importance of lean body mass or other body‐size measures as normative determinants of carotid intima‐media thickness ( cIMT ), a widely used early indicator of atherosclerosis, has not been well established. Methods and Results Carotid artery ultrasound measurements of cIMT and carotid artery plaque burden (derived from plaque number and maximum size) and measurements of body size, including height, body mass index, weight, body fat proportion, and lean body mass ([1−body fat proportion]×weight), were recorded in 25 020 participants from 10 regions of China. Analyses were restricted to a healthy younger subset (n=6617) defined as never or long‐term ex‐regular smokers aged cIMT , but was not associated with plaque burden: overall, each 10 kg higher lean body mass was associated with a 0.03 (95% CI , 0.03–0.04) mm higher cIMT ( P =5×10 −33 ). Fat mass, height, and other body‐size measures were more weakly associated with cIMT . Conclusions The strong association of lean body mass with cIMT, but not with plaque burden, in healthy adults suggests a normative relationship rather than reflecting atherosclerotic pathology. Common mechanisms may underlie the associations of lean body mass with cIMT and with nonatherosclerotic vascular traits.

Non-maximum suppression is an integral and last part of object detection. Traditional NMS algorithm sorts the detection boxes according to their class scores. The detection boxes with maximum score are always selected while all other boxes with a sufficient overlap with the preserved boxes are discarded. This strategy is simple and effective. However, there still need some improvements in this process because the algorithm makes a ‘hard’ decision (accept or reject) for each box. In this paper, we formulate the non-maximum suppression as a rescoring process and construct a network called NmsNet which utilizes graph convolution and self attention mechanism to predict each box as an object or redundant one. We evaluate our method on the VOC2007 dataset. The experimental results show that our method achieves a higher MAP compared with the traditional greedy NMS and the Soft NMS.

Developing epoxy composites with high thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical properties becomes imperative in electronic and aerospace industries. This study investigates and compares the effect of adding boron nitride (BN) sheets and graphene platelets (GnPs) on the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of epoxy resin. The study shows that incorporation of BN or GnPs into epoxy matrix significantly enhanced both mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of epoxy composites. At fractions ranging 1-4 wt%, GnPs/epoxy composites provide higher Young's modulus, fracture toughness (K1c) and critical stress energy release rate (G1c) compared to BN/epoxy composites. The thermal conductivity of the epoxy composites is up to the maximum of 0.33 Wm−1K−1 at 4 wt% of GnP loading, which is much higher than that of the composites filled with the same loading of BN (0.23 Wm−1K−1). The study emphasizes the importance of adding thin nanosheets (thickness 3-5 nm) at low loadings in developing epoxy composites to achieve desired mechanical and thermal properties. The study aims to improve the rheological behaviors and oil recovery of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) at high salinity by introducing nanosilicas. It was found that the combination of hydrophobically associating polyacrylamide (HAHPAM) and cetyl-modified nanoparticles (CMNPs) has a more substantial synergy for improving rheological behaviors of hybrid dispersions at high salinity, comparing with other HPAM/NP hybrids. The CMNPs markedly facilitate the cross-links among clumpy molecular aggregates of HAHPAM and made the hybrids more elastic. At a given HAHPAM concentration, there exists an optimal CMNP concentration at which the adsorption of nanosilicas on the polymer molecular chains is maximized. Under reservoir conditions, the HAHPAM/CMNP hybrid is more efficient than the HAHPAM/NP hybrid for enhanced oil recovery. The oil displacement mechanism of the HAHPAM/CMNP hybrid is attributed to the synergistic thickening and wettability change. The hydrophobic effect between HAHPAM and the CMNPs effectively improves the salt tolerance of the hybrids.

Owing to advantageous properties attributed to well-organized structures, multifunctional materials with reversible hierarchical and highly ordered arrangement in solid-state assembled structures have drawn tremendous interest. However, such materials rarely exist. Based on the reversible phase transition of phase-change materials (PCMs), phase-change nanocrystals (C18-UCNCs) are presented herein, which are capable of self-assembling into well-ordered hierarchical structures. C18-UCNCs have a core-shell structure consisting of a cellulose crystalline core that retains the basic structure and a soft shell containing octadecyl chains that allow phase transition. The distinct core-shell structure and phase transition of octadecyl chains allow C18-UCNCs to self-assemble into flaky nano/microstructures. These self-assembled C18-UCNCs exhibit efficient thermal transport and light-to-thermal energy conversion, and thus are promising for thermosensitive imaging. Specifically, flaky self-assembled nano/microstructures with manipulable surface morphology, surface wetting, and optical properties are thermoreversible and show thermally induced self-healing properties. By using phase-change nanocrystals as a novel group of PCMs, reversible self-assembled multifunctional materials can be engineered. This study proposes a promising approach for constructing self-assembled hierarchical structures by using phase-change nanocrystals and thereby significantly expands the application of PCMs.

Background In Western populations, a higher level of fruit consumption has been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, but little is known about such associations in China, where the consumption level is low and rates of stroke are high. Methods Between 2004 and 2008, we recruited 512,891 adults, 30 to 79 years of age, from 10 diverse localities in China. During 3.2 million person-years of follow-up, 5173 deaths from cardiovascular disease, 2551 incident major coronary events (fatal or nonfatal), 14,579 ischemic strokes, and 3523 intracerebral hemorrhages were recorded among the 451,665 participants who did not have a history of cardiovascular disease or antihypertensive treatments at baseline. Cox regression yielded adjusted hazard ratios relating fresh fruit consumption to disease rates. Results Overall, 18.0% of participants reported consuming fresh fruit daily. As compared with participants who never or rarely consumed fresh fruit (the “nonconsumption” category), those who ate fresh fruit daily had lower systolic blood pressure (by 4.0 mm Hg) and blood glucose levels (by 0.5 mmol per liter [9.0 mg per deciliter]) (P Conclusions Among Chinese adults, a higher level of fruit consumption was associated with lower blood pressure and blood glucose levels and, largely independent of these and other dietary and nondietary factors, with significantly lower risks of major cardiovascular diseases.

Many phase change materials experience a change in optical properties when undergoing a phase transition, showing great potential in preparation of smart optical materials. In this work, copolymer consisted of monomer styrene (St), butyl acrylate (BA), and 1-octadecene (ODE) was infiltrated into treated wood to obtain a flexible transparent wood (TW) with thermo-reversible optical properties (abbreviated as SBO/TW). The introduction of ODE chains induced obvious revisable endothermic decrystallization and exothermic crystallization behaviors, which indicated that SBO/TW had revisable optical characteristic. The novel phase-change SBO5/TW could repeatedly turn from opaque (~23.7% of transmittance, ~98.3% of haze) to transparent (~74.9% of transmittance, ~36% of haze) with an increase in temperature, and vice versa during the cooling process. In addition, the thermal conductivity of SBO/TW was lower than 0.2 W m−1 k−1, which is the limit value of thermal insulation material. Moreover, SBO/TW showed excellent flexibility with a high breaking elongation (~80%) and low storage modulus (good softness). This study presents a synthetic strategy to control optical properties of TW, promoting the potential application of TW as smart light controlling systems.

Bio-based membranes for emulsion separation are sustainable, low-cost, renewable, biodegradable, and nontoxic. Herein, an antibacterial sandwich-like composite paper was fabricated by a facile process using Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs)-coated pulp fibers and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). The obtained Ag-Pulp/CNF composite paper was superhydrophilic, allowing a 96 % separation efficiency for various oil-in-water emulsions. This outstanding separation efficiency was maintained over 20 separation cycles. The composite paper also showed satisfactory separation performance for water-in-oil emulsions after modification to render the surface hydrophobic. The CNFs provided the composite a nanoscale pore, which rejected nearly 100 % of bacteria when used to filter bacteria-contaminated emulsions due to a physical barrier effect. Attributed to the intrinsic antibacterial capability of Ag NPs, the composite paper exhibited strong antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli. Thus, the composite paper that was mainly derived from sustainable pulp fibers exhibited potential performance for oil/water separation and water purification.

Rationale Little evidence from large-scale cohort studies exists about the relationship of solid fuel use with hospitalization and mortality from major respiratory diseases. Objectives To examine the associations of solid fuel use and risks of acute and chronic respiratory diseases. Methods A cohort study of 277,838 Chinese never-smokers with no prior major chronic diseases at baseline. During 9 years of follow-up, 19,823 first hospitalization episodes or deaths from major respiratory diseases, including 10,553 chronic lower respiratory disease (CLRD), 4,398 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and 7,324 acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI), were recorded. Cox regression yielded adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for disease risks associated with self-reported primary cooking fuel use. Measurements and Main Results Overall, 91% of participants reported regular cooking, with 52% using solid fuels. Compared with clean fuel users, solid fuel users had an adjusted HR of 1.36 (95% confidence interval, 1.32–1.40) for major respiratory diseases, whereas those who switched from solid to clean fuels had a weaker HR (1.14, 1.10–1.17). The HRs were higher in wood (1.37, 1.33–1.41) than coal users (1.22, 1.15–1.29) and in those with prolonged use (≥40 yr, 1.54, 1.48–1.60; Conclusions Among Chinese adults, solid fuel use for cooking was associated with higher risks of major respiratory disease admissions and death, and switching to clean fuels or use of ventilated cookstoves had lower risk than not switching.

Pedestrian detection as a key problem of computer vision has many comprehensive applications such as smart transportation, video surveillance and self-driving car. In this work, we explore the application of Faster R-CNN for pedestrian detection. We found that Faster R-CNN has not shown competitive results as we expected. The main challenges for Faster R-CNN may be small objects and hard negative examples. More interestingly, we found that when the RPN and the proposal classifier are trained separately and simply combined, the detection results can be significantly improved. Based on these observations, we designed a multi-map network and a multi-ROI network to solve these two problems. The multi-map network not only utilizes the convolutional feature maps output by last convolutional layer but also exploits the previous feature maps which have higher resolution but less semantic information. The multi-ROI network converts one bounding box to three bounding boxes including enlarged one, shrinking one and original one. Then, the network fuses the features of these three bounding boxes into one robust and discriminative feature. In addition to comparing these two networks with Faster R-CNN, we also merged them into one unified and end to end network called multi-ROI-map (MRM) network. Finally, we trained the RPN and MRM separately and fused their detection results. Overall, our method achieves a competitive result compared with some leading methods on the Caltech dataset and executes 2 times faster than these methods.

This improvement can be seen through increasing the number of the researchers use IoT as their research topic. Nevertheless, creating an application by using internet of thing will have the challenge in online data transferring process because of the heterogenic and massive data that needs to be analyzed and processed. This paper applied the application of the internet of thing for household appliances in existing electronic product that combined with ZigBee module and database to build an IoT network architecture. In the experiment, we use TCP/IP protocol and Microsoft Visual Studio ASP.NET to develop a monitoring system that can monitor and analyze the big data. In controlling and monitoring the process, the electronic devices are given the individual numbers in order to recognize, identify, and then manage or instruct it by ZigBee module that combines with a user-friendly web interface. As the result, people can monitor and get the information about their houses even though they are going outside, then when they forgot to turn off the lamp, air conditioner, and other household appliances so it still possible for them to turn off it as well as they have an internet connection.

Background While the high-temperature tea consumption has been suggested as a risk factor for esophageal cancer (EC), this has not been consistently observed and whether it is independent of alcohol and tobacco exposure has not been evaluated. Objective To examine the joint association of high-temperature tea consumption and established risk factors of alcohol consumption and smoking on EC risk. Design China Kadoorie Biobank, prospective cohort study established during 2004-08. Setting Ten areas across China Participants 456,155 participants aged 30-79 years after excluding participants with cancer at baseline and those who had cut down consumption of tea, alcohol, or tobacco before baseline. Measurements The usual temperature at which tea was consumed, other tea consumption metrics, and lifestyle behaviors were self-reported once at baseline. Outcome was EC incidence until 2015. Results During a median of 9.2 years of follow-up, we documented 1,731 incident EC cases. We found that high-temperature tea consumption in combination with either alcohol consumption or smoking had a greater risk of developing EC than high-temperature tea consumption alone. Compared with participants who consumed tea less than weekly and consumed alcohol Limitations Tea consumption was self-reported once at baseline, leading to the possibility of nondifferential misclassification and attenuation of the association. Conclusion Our findings highlight the importance of abstaining from high-temperature tea in excessive alcohol consumers and smokers on EC prevention.

Summary Background The age-specific association between blood pressure and vascular disease has been studied mostly in high-income countries, and before the widespread use of brain imaging for diagnosis of the main stroke types (ischaemic stroke and intracerebral haemorrhage). We aimed to investigate this relationship among adults in China. Methods 512 891 adults (59% women) aged 30–79 years were recruited into a prospective study from ten areas of China between June 25, 2004, and July 15, 2008. Participants attended assessment centres where they were interviewed about demographic and lifestyle characteristics, and their blood pressure, height, and weight were measured. Incident disease was identified through linkage to local mortality records, chronic disease registries, and claims to the national health insurance system. We used Cox regression analysis to produce adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) relating systolic blood pressure to disease incidence. HRs were corrected for regression dilution to estimate associations with long-term average (usual) systolic blood pressure. Findings During a median follow-up of 9 years (IQR 8–10), there were 88 105 incident vascular and non-vascular chronic disease events (about 90% of strokes events were diagnosed using brain imaging). At ages 40–79 years (mean age at event 64 years [SD 9]), usual systolic blood pressure was continuously and positively associated with incident major vascular disease throughout the range 120–180 mm Hg: each 10 mm Hg higher usual systolic blood pressure was associated with an approximately 30% higher risk of ischaemic heart disease (HR 1·31 [95% CI 1·28–1·34]) and ischaemic stroke (1·30 [1·29–1·31]), but the association with intracerebral haemorrhage was about twice as steep (1·68 [1·65–1·71]). HRs for vascular disease were twice as steep at ages 40–49 years than at ages 70–79 years. Usual systolic blood pressure was also positively associated with incident chronic kidney disease (1·40 [1·35–1·44]) and diabetes (1·14 [1·12–1·15]). Summary Background China has high stroke rates despite the population being relatively lean. Uncertainty persists about the relevance of adiposity to risk of stroke types. We aimed to assess the associations of adiposity with incidence of stroke types and effect mediation by blood pressure in Chinese men and women. Methods The China Kadoorie Biobank enrolled 512 891 adults aged 30–79 years from ten areas (five urban and five rural) during 2004–08. During a median 9 years (IQR 8–10) of follow-up, 32 448 strokes (about 90% confirmed by neuroimaging) were recorded among 489 301 participants without previous cardiovascular disease. Cox regression analysis was used to produce adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for ischaemic stroke (n=25 210) and intracerebral haemorrhage (n=5380) associated with adiposity. Findings Mean baseline body-mass index (BMI) was 23·6 kg/m2 (SD 3·2), and 331 723 (67·8%) participants had a BMI of less than 25 kg/m2. Throughout the range examined (mean 17·1 kg/m2 [SD 0·9] to 31·7 kg/m2 [2·0]), each 5 kg/m2 higher BMI was associated with 8·3 mm Hg (SE 0·04) higher systolic blood pressure. BMI was positively associated with ischaemic stroke, with an HR of 1·30 (95% CI 1·28–1·33 per 5 kg/m2 higher BMI), which was generally consistent with that predicted by equivalent differences in systolic blood pressure (1·25 [1·24–1·26]). The HR for intracerebral haemorrhage (1·11 [1·07–1·16] per 5 kg/m2 higher BMI) was less extreme, and much weaker than that predicted by the corresponding difference in systolic blood pressure (1·48 [1·46–1·50]). Other adiposity measures showed similar associations with stroke types. After adjustment for usual systolic blood pressure, the positive associations with ischaemic stroke were attenuated (1·05 [1·03–1·07] per 5 kg/m2 higher BMI); for intracerebral haemorrhage, they were reversed (0·73 [0·70–0·77]). High adiposity (BMI >23 kg/m2) accounted for 14·7% of total stroke (16·5% of ischaemic stroke and 6·7% of intracerebral haemorrhage). Interpretation In Chinese adults, adiposity was strongly positively associated with ischaemic stroke, chiefly through its effect on blood pressure. For intracerebral haemorrhage, leanness, either per se or through some other factor (or factors), might increase risk, offsetting the protective effects of lower blood pressure. Background Self‐rated health ( SRH ) is a strong predictor of mortality in different populations. However, the associations between SRH measures and risk of ischemic heart disease ( IHD ) have not been extensively explored, especially in a Chinese population. Methods and Results More than 500 000 adults from 10 cities in China were followed from baseline (2004–2008) through December 31, 2013. Global and age‐comparative SRH were reported from baseline questionnaires. Incident IHD cases were identified through links to well‐established disease registry systems and the national health insurance system. During 3 423 542 person‐years of follow‐up, we identified 24 705 incident cases of IHD . In multivariable‐adjusted models, both global and age‐comparative SRH was significantly associated with incident IHD . Compared with excellent SRH , the hazard ratios for good, fair, and poor SRH were 1.02 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.98–1.07), 1.32 (95% CI, 1.27–1.37), and 1.76 (95% CI, 1.68–1.85), respectively. Compared with better age‐comparative SRH , the hazard ratios for same and worse age‐comparative SRH were 1.23 (95% CI, 1.19–1.27) and 1.78 (95% CI, 1.70–1.86), respectively. The associations persisted in all subgroup analyses, although they were slightly modified by study location, education, and income levels. Conclusions A simple questionnaire for self‐assessment of health status was significantly associated with incident IHD in Chinese adults. Individuals and healthcare providers can use SRH measures as a convenient tool for assessing future IHD risk.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to a combination of healthy lifestyle factors has been related to a considerable reduction of cardiovascular risk in white populations; however, little is known whether such associations persist in nonwhite populations like the Asian population. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the associations of a combination of modifiable, healthy lifestyle factors with the risks of ischemic cardiovascular diseases and estimate the proportion of diseases that could potentially be prevented by adherence to these healthy lifestyle patterns.
