1. Composite fermions and parton wavefunctions in twisted graphene on hexagonal boron nitride

Abstract

In a twisted graphene on hexagonal Boron Nitride, the presence of a gap and the breaking of the symmetry between carbon sublattices leads to multicomponent fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) due to the electrons correlation. We report on the FQHE at filling factors nu = k/2 and nu = k/3 with nu > 1, and on the composite fermions at in the nu < 1 lowest landau Level nu = 4/5, 5/7 and 2/3. These fractional states can be described with a partons model, in which the electron is broken down into sub-particles each one residing in an integer quantum Hall effect state; partons are fictitious particles that, glued back together, recover the physical electrons. The parton states host exotic anyons that could potentially form building blocks of a fault-tolerant topological quantum computer.

Abstract

The PTOLEMY experiment aims at detecting the cosmic neutrino background, generated approximately one second after the Big Bang, in accordance with Standard Cosmology. Given the extremely low energy of these neutrinos, reliable experimental detection can be accomplished through neutrino captures on beta-unstable nuclides, eliminating the need for a specific energy threshold. Tritium implanted on a carbon-based nanostructure emerges as a promising candidate among the various isotopes due to its favorable cross-section and low-endpoint energy. The Ptolemy collaboration plans to integrate a solid-state tritium source with a novel compact electromagnetic filter, based on the dynamic transverse momentum cancellation concept. This filter will be employed in conjunction with an event-based preliminary radio-frequency preselection. The measurement of neutrino mass and the exploration of light sterile neutrinos represent additional outcomes stemming from the Ptolemy experiment’s physics potential, even when utilizing smaller or intermediate-scale detectors. To finalize the conceptualization of the detector, a demonstrator prototype will be assembled and tested at LNGS in 2024. This prototype aims at addressing the challenging aspects of the Ptolemy experiment.

4. A full superconducting dome of strong Ising protection in gated monolayer WS2

Abstract

Many recent studies show that superconductivity not only exists in atomically thin monolayers but can exhibit enhanced properties such as higher transition temperature and stronger critical field. Nevertheless, besides being air unstable, weak tunability in these intrinsically metallic monolayers has posed a severe limitation in exploring monolayer superconductivity, hence hindering possible applications in electronic devices. Using field effect gating, we prepared monolayer superconductivity in easily accessible CVD-grown WS2, a typical ambient stable semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD). Here, we present a complete set of competitive electronic phases over an unprecedented range from band insulator, superconductor, to an unexpected re-entrant insulator. Throughout the superconducting dome, the Cooper pair spin is pinned by a strong internal spin-orbit interaction, making this material arguably the most resilient superconductor in a magnetic field. The re-entrant insulating state at positive high gating voltages is plausibly attributed to localization induced by the characteristically weak screening of the monolayer, providing the key insight into many dome-like superconducting phases observed in field induced quasi-2D superconductors.

12. Josephson coupled Ising pairing induced in suspended MoS2bilayers by double-side ionic gating

Abstract

Superconductivity in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is characterized by Ising-type pairing induced via a strong Zeeman-type spin–orbit coupling. When two transition metal dichalcogenides layers are coupled, more exotic superconducting phases emerge, which depend on the ratio of Ising-type protection and interlayer coupling strength. Here, we induce superconductivity in suspended MoS2bilayers and unveil a coupled superconducting state with strong Ising-type spin–orbit coupling. Gating the bilayer symmetrically from both sides by ionic liquid gating varies the interlayer interaction and accesses electronic states with broken local inversion symmetry while maintaining the global inversion symmetry. We observe a strong suppression of the Ising protection that evidences a coupled superconducting state. The symmetric gating scheme not only induces superconductivity in both atomic sheets but also controls the Josephson coupling between the layers, which gives rise to a dimensional crossover in the bilayer.

Abstract

The Zeeman effect, which is usually detrimental to superconductivity, can be strongly protective when an effective Zeeman field fromintrinsic spin-orbit coupling locks the spins of Cooper pairs in a direction orthogonal to an external magnetic field. We performed magnetotransport experiments with ionic-gated molybdenum disulfide transistors, in which gating prepared individual superconducting states with different carrier dopings, and measured an in-plane critical field Bc2 far beyond the Pauli paramagnetic limit, consistent with Zeeman-protected superconductivity. The gating-enhanced Bc2 is more than an order of magnitude larger than it is in the bulk superconducting phases, where the effective Zeeman field is weakened by interlayer coupling. Our study provides experimental evidence of an Ising superconductor, in which spins of the pairing electrons are strongly pinned by an effective Zeeman field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

17. Quantum Hall effect in a CVD-grown oxide.

Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) electron systems are promising for investigating correlated quantum phenomena. In particular, 2D oxides provide a platform that can host various quantum phases such as quantized Hall effect, superconductivity, or magnetism. The realization of such quantum phases in 2D oxides heavily relies on dedicated heterostructure growths. Here we show the integer quantum Hall effect achieved in chemical vapor deposition grown Bi 2 O 2 Se - a representative member of a more accessible oxide family. A single or few subband 2D electron system can be prepared in thin films of Bi 2 O 2 Se, where the film thickness acts as the key subband design parameter and the occupation is determined by the electric field effect. This oxide platform exhibits characteristic advantages in structural flexibility due to its layered nature, making it suitable for scalable growth. 18. Orbital Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in an Ising superconductor.

Abstract

In superconductors possessing both time and inversion symmetries, the Zeeman effect of an external magnetic field can break the time-reversal symmetry, forming a conventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state characterized by Cooper pairings with finite momentum 1,2 . In superconductors lacking (local) inversion symmetry, the Zeeman effect may still act as the underlying mechanism of FFLO states by interacting with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Specifically, the interplay between the Zeeman effect and Rashba SOC can lead to the formation of more accessible Rashba FFLO states that cover broader regions in the phase diagram 3-5 . However, when the Zeeman effect is suppressed because of spin locking in the presence of Ising-type SOC, the conventional FFLO scenarios are no longer effective. Instead, an unconventional FFLO state is formed by coupling the orbital effect of magnetic fields with SOC, providing an alternative mechanism in superconductors with broken inversion symmetries 6-8 . Here we report the discovery of such an orbital FFLO state in the multilayer Ising superconductor 2H-NbSe 2 . Transport measurements show that the translational and rotational symmetries are broken in the orbital FFLO state, providing the hallmark signatures of finite-momentum Cooper pairings. We establish the entire orbital FFLO phase diagram, consisting of a normal metal, a uniform Ising superconducting phase and a six-fold orbital FFLO state. This study highlights an alternative route to achieving finite-momentum superconductivity and provides a universal mechanism to preparing orbital FFLO states in similar materials with broken inversion symmetries., (© 2023. 19. Correlated States in Strained Twisted Bilayer Graphenes Away from the Magic Angle.

Abstract

Graphene moiré superlattice formed by rotating two graphene sheets can host strongly correlated and topological states when flat bands form at so-called magic angles. Here, we report that, for a twisting angle far away from the magic angle, the heterostrain induced during stacking heterostructures can also create flat bands. Combining a direct visualization of strain effect in twisted bilayer graphene moiré superlattices and transport measurements, features of correlated states appear at "non-magic" angles in twisted bilayer graphene under the heterostrain. Observing correlated states in these "non-standard" conditions can enrich the understanding of the possible origins of the correlated states and widen the freedom in tuning the moiré heterostructures and the scope of exploring the correlated physics in moiré superlattices.

20. Continuous Low-Bias Switching of Superconductivity in a MoS 2 Transistor.

Abstract

Engineering the properties of quantum electron systems, e.g., tuning the superconducting phase using low driving bias within an easily accessible temperature range, is of great interest for exploring exotic physical phenomena as well as achieving real applications. Here, the realization of continuous field-effect switching between superconducting and non-superconducting states in a few-layer MoS 2 transistor is reported. Ionic-liquid gating induces the superconducting state close to the quantum critical point on the top surface of the MoS 2 , and continuous switching between the super/non-superconducting states is achieved by HfO 2 back gating. The superconducting transistor works effectively in the helium-4 temperature range and requires a gate bias as low as ≈10 V. The dual-gate device structure and strategy presented here can be easily generalized to other systems, opening new opportunities for designing high-performance 2D superconducting transistors., (© 2018 The Authors.
