We extend the analysis of elastic pion-nucleon scattering up to $O(p^4)$ level using extended-on-mass-shell subtraction scheme within the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. Numerical fits to partial wave phase shift data up to $\sqrt{s}=1.13$ GeV are performed to pin down the free low energy constants. A good description to the existing phase shift data is achieved. We find a good convergence for the chiral series at $O(p^4)$, considerably improved with respect to the $O(p^3)$-level analyses found in previous literature. Also, the leading order contribution from explicit $\Delta(1232)$ resonance and partially-included $\Delta(1232)$ loop contribution are included to describe phase shift data up to $\sqrt{s}=1.20$ GeV. As phenomenological applications, we investigate chiral correction to the Goldberger-Treiman relation %$\Delta_{GT}$ and find that it converges rapidly, and the $O(p^3)$ correction is found to be very small: $\simeq 0.2%$. We also get a reasonable prediction of pion-nucleon sigma term $\sigma_{\pi N}$ up to $O(p^4)$ by performing fits including both the pion-nucleon partial wave phase shift data and the lattice QCD data. We report that $\sigma_{\pi N}=52\pm7$ MeV from the fit without $\Delta(1232)$, and $\sigma_{\pi N}=45\pm6$ MeV from the fit with explicit $\Delta(1232)$., Comment: The final version published in Phys.Rev. The $O(p^4)$ calculation on pion-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude in EOMS scheme within covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory is reviewed. We study the property of $X(4260)$ resonance by re-analyzing all experimental data available, especially the $e^+e^- \rightarrow J/\psi\,\pi^+\pi^-,\,\,\,\omega\chi_{c0}$ cross section data. The final state interactions of the $\pi\pi$, $K\bar K$ couple channel system are also taken into account. A sizable coupling between the $X(4260)$ and $\omega\chi_{c0}$ is found. The inclusion of the $\omega\chi_{c0}$ data indicates a small value of $\Gamma_{e^+e^-}=23.30\pm 3.55$eV., Comment: Refined analysis with new experimental data included. 13 pages

In a previous paper (Commun. Theor. Phys. 57 (2012) 841), we proposed a method to distinguish poles of different dynamical origin, in a unitarized amplitude of $\pi\pi\, K\bar K$ system. That is based on the observation that `A Breit-Wigner resonance should exhibit two poles on different Riemann sheets which meet each other on the real axis when $N_c=\infty$'. In this paper, we extend our previous work (Commun.Theor.Phys. 57 (2012) 841) to the $\pi\pi$-$K\bar K$-$\eta\eta$ three channel system. We reconfirm most of the previous predictions. We analyze $\pi\pi-K\bar{K}$ and $\pi\eta-K\bar{K}$ couple channel [1,1] matrix Pad\'e amplitudes of $SU(3)\times SU(3)$ chiral perturbation theory. By fitting phase shift and inelasticity data, we determine pole positions in different channels ($f_0(980)$, $a_0(980)$,$f_0(600)$, $K_0^*(800)$, $K^*(892)$, $\rho(770)$) and trace their $N_c$ trajectories. We stress that a couple channel Breit--Wigner resonance should exhibit two poles on different Riemann sheets and meet each other on the real axis when $N_c=\infty$. Poles are hence classified using this criteria and we conclude that $K^*(892)$ and $\rho(770)$ are unambiguous Breit--Wigner resonances. For scalars the situation is much less clear. We find that $f_0(980)$ is a molecular state rather than a Breit--Wigner resonance, while $a_0(980)$, though behaves oddly when varying $N_c$, does maintain a twin pole structure., Comment: 16 pages

Positivity constraints on the LECs of $\cO(p^6)$ $\chi$PT lagrangian are discussed. We demonstrate that the constraints are automatically satisfied inside the Mandelstam triangle for $\pi\pi$ scatterings, when $N_C$ is large. Using dispersion relation technique and experimental data, a coupled channel analysis on $\gamma\gamma\to\pi\pi$ process is made. Di-photon coupling of $f_0(600)$ and $f_0(980)$ resonances are extracted and their dynamical properties are discussed. Especially we study the physical meaning of the coupling constant $g^2_{\sigma\pi\pi}$, which maintains a negative real part as determined through dispersive analyses., Comment: Talk given by H. Q. We estimate the di-photon coupling of $f_0(600)$, $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ resonances in a coupled channel dispersive approach. The $f_0(600)$ di-photon coupling is also reinvestigated using a single channel $T$ matrix for $\pi\pi$ scattering with better analyticity property, and it is found to be significantly smaller than that of a $\bar qq$ state. Especially we also estimate the di-photon coupling of the third sheet pole located near $\bar KK$ threshold, denoted as $f_0^{III}(980)$. It is argued that this third sheet pole may be originated from a coupled channel Breit-Wigner description of the $f_0(980)$ resonance., Comment: 24 pages and 13 eps figures. An analysis including most recent Belle data on X(3872) is performed, using coupled channel Flatt\'e formula. A third sheet pole close to but \textit{below} $D^0D^{*0}$ threshold is found, besides the bound state/virtual state pole discussed in previous literature. The co-existence of two poles near the $D^0D^{*0}$ threshold indicates that the X(3872) may be of ordinary $c\bar c$ $2 ^3P_1$ state origin, distorted by strong coupled channel effects. We propose a measurement on the elastic $\pi\pi$ scattering phase shift difference $\delta^0_0-\delta^2_0$ through $\Psi'\to J/\Psi \pi^+ \pi^-$ process in future high statistics BES-III experiment. The decay amplitude is constructed with seven Lorentz invariant form-factors and is compared with their theoretical estimation. It is found that the phase shift difference can be obtained, based on a Monte Carlo study and it is expected the phase shift in the energy region between 350 MeV to 550 MeV can be measured at future BES-III., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure

Continuing our previous work(JHEP 0706:030,2007), large--$N_C$ techniques and partial wave dispersion relations are used to discuss $\pi\pi$ scattering amplitudes. We discuss the lightest scalar resonances, $f_0(600)$, $\kappa(800)$, $a_0(980)$ and $f_0(980)$ in the extended Nambu Jona-Lasinio model. We find that the model parameters can be tuned, but unnaturally, to accommodate for those scalars except the $f_0(980)$. Using $1/N_C$ expansion and dispersion theory techniques, without relying on any explicit resonance lagrangian, we generalize the KSRF relation beyond the leading chiral order. Two sum rules for the low energy constants $L_2$, $L_3$ and a new relation between resonance couplings are derived. We study the problem whether the $\sigma$ meson is generated `dynamically'. A pedagogical analysis on the toy O(N) linear sigma model is performed and we find that the large $N_c$ limit and the $m_\sigma\to \infty$ limit does not commute. The sigma meson may not necessarily be described as a dynamically generated resonance. O(N) linear $\sigma$ model is solvable in the large $N$ limit and hence provides a useful theoretical laboratory to test various unitarization approximations. We find that the large $N_c$ limit and the $m_\sigma\to \infty$ limit do not commute. In order to get the correct large $N_c$ spectrum one has to firstly take the large $N_c$ limit. We argue that the $f_0(600)$ meson may not be described as generated dynamically. On the contrary, it is most appropriately described at the same level as the pions, i.e, both appear explicitly in the effective lagrangian. We review the spectrum of lightest scalar resonances recently determined using dispersion techniques. The conceptual difference between the pole mass and the bare mass (or the line--shape mass) is stressed. The nature of the lightest scalars are discussed and we argue, without relying on any model details, that the $\sigma(500)$, $\kappa(700)$, $a_0(980)$ and $f_0(980)$ may be understood as chiral partners of the Nambu--Goldstone bosons in the linear realization of chiral symmetry. We point out that the dispersion relation for the left hand cut integral presented in one of our previous paper (Nucl. Phys. {\bf A}733(2004)235) is actually free of subtraction constant, even for unequal mass elastic scatterings. A new fit to the LASS data~\cite{Aston} is performed and firm evidence for the existence of $\kappa$ pole is found. The correct use of analyticity also put strong constraints on threshold parameters -- which are found to be in good agreement with those obtained from chiral theories. We also determined the pole parameters of $K_0^*(1430)$ on the second sheet, and reconfirm the existence of $K_0^*(1950)$ on the third sheet. We study I=0 $d$ wave $\pi\pi$ scattering phase shift using a proper unitarization approach. It is verified that the $f_2(1270)$ resonance corresponds to a twin pole structure: one on the second sheet, another one on the third sheet. Also we find fair agreement on $f_2(1270)$ pole's mass and width between our results and the PDG values. Besides, our analysis reveals the existence of a virtual state in this channel. Its pole location is determined by fitting experimental data and it is found to be in good agreement with the prediction from chiral perturbation theory. Our analysis demonstrates that partial wave amplitudes calculated in chiral perturbation theory are reliable in the small $|s|$ region, contrary to some unitarization models., Comment: replaced by the version published in JHEP 0512 (2005) 019. We explore the nature of the$\sigma$ or $f_0(600)$ meson using large $N_c$ technique, assuming that the $\sigma$ pole dominates low energy physics in the IJ=00 channel. We trace the $N_c$ dependence of the $\sigma$ pole position using [1,1] Pad\'e approximation of SU(3) chiral amplitude, [1,2] Pad\'e approximation of SU(2) chiral amplitudes, and the PKU parametrization form. We find that in all 3 cases the $\sigma$ pole moves to the real axis of the complex $s$-plane. By studying $\pi\pi$ scattering amplitudes in the large $N_c$ limit, we clarify the $N_c$ dependence of the $S$ matrix pole position. It is demonstrated that analyticity and the $N_c$ counting rule exclude the existence of $S$ matrix poles with ${\cal M}, \Gamma\sim O(1)$. Especially the properties of $\sigma$ and $f_0(980)$ with respect to the $1/N_c$ expansion are discussed. We briefly review the recent progresses in the new unitarization approach being developed by us. Especially we discuss the large $N_c$ $\pi\pi$ scatterings by making use of the partial wave $S$ matrix parametrization form. The pole structure of the low energy $\pi\pi$ scattering amplitudes is studied using a proper chiral unitarization method combined with crossing symmetry and the low energy phase shift data. It is found that the $\sigma$ pole position is at $M_\sigma=470\pm 50MeV$, $\Gamma_\sigma=570\pm 50MeV$. The existence of the virtual state pole in the IJ=20 channel is reconfirmed. Various threshold parameters are estimated and are found in general in good agreement with the results obtained from the Roy equation analyses., Comment: Minor corrections made and references added. A new unitarization approach incorporated with chiral symmetry is established and applied to study the $\pi K$ elastic scatterings. We demonstrate that the $\kappa$ resonance exists, if the scattering length parameter in the I=1/2, J=0 channel does not deviate much from its value predicted by chiral perturbation theory. The mass and width of the $\kappa$ resonance is found to be $M_\kappa=594\pm 79MeV$, $\Gamma_\kappa=724\pm 332MeV$, obtained by fitting the LASS data up to 1430MeV. A new unitarization approach is discussed and applied to study the elastic $\pi K$ scattering process. The existence of the light $\kappa$ resonance is firmly established if the scattering length in the I=1/2 channel does not deviate too much from its value obtained from chiral perturbation theory, and a precise determination to the mass and width of the $\kappa$ resonance requires a precise determination of the scattering length parameter., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. A canonical formalism for Lagrangians of maximal nonlocality is established. The method is based on the familiar Legendre transformation to a new function which can be derived from the maximally nonlocal Lagrangian. The corresponding canonical equations are derived through the standard procedure in local theory and appear much like those local ones, though the implication of the equations is largely expanded., Comment: 17 pages with 1 eps figure

Based on a $J/\psi$ data sample of $7.8 \times 10^6$ events at BESI, the decay of $ J/\psi \to \bar{K}^*(892)^0 K^+ \pi^-$ is studied and a low mass enhancement, which is believed not coming from the phase space effect or background, is visible in the $K^+ \pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum recoiling against $\bar{K}^*(892)^0$. Partial wave analysis of this channel favors this low mass enhancement being a broad $0^{+}$ resonance with the mass and width of $771^{+164}_{-221}\pm 55$ MeV/c$^2$ and $220^{+225}_{-169} \pm 97$ MeV/c$^2$, respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

A new dispersion relation for the partial wave $\pi\pi$ scattering $S$ matrix is set up. Using the dispersion relation we generalize the single channel unitarity condition, $SS^+=1$, to the entire complex $s$ plane, which is equivalent to the generalized unitarity condition in quantum mechanics. The pole positions of the $\sigma$ resonance and the $f_0(980)$ resonance are estimated based on the theoretical relations we obtained. The central value of the $\sigma$ pole position is $M_\sigma\simeq 410$MeV, $\Gamma_\sigma\simeq 550$MeV, obtained after including the the constraint of the Adler zero condition., Comment: 10 pages with 4 figures, revised version to appear in Phys. By applying analyticity and single channel unitarity we derive a new formula which is useful to analyze the role of the left-hand singularities in hadron form factors and in the determination of the resonance parameters. Chiral perturbation theory is used to estimate the left-hand cut effects in $\pi\pi$ scattering processes. We find that in the IJ=11 channel the left-hand cut effect is negligible and in the IJ=20 channel the phase shift is dominated by the left-hand cut effect. In the IJ=00 channel the left-hand cut contribution to the phase shift has the wrong sign comparing with the experimental data and therefore it necessitates the $\sigma$ resonance. A coupled channel model is used to study the nature of the f0(980) resonance. It is shown that the existence of two poles close to KKbar threshold, as found in many data fits and confirmed here, can be reconciled with the KKbar molecular origin of the f0(980). Due to a strong coupling between channels the number of the S-matrix poles close to the physical region in the physical case exceeds the number of bare states introduced in the model., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, published in Eur. Final state interactions in the $S$--wave $\pi\pi$ system (I=0,2) are re-examined on the basis of the Omn\`es-Mus\-khe\-li\-shvili equation and the coupled channel formalism. The contributions to the pion scalar form factor from $\rho$ and $f_2(1270)$ exchange in the $t$--channel and from the $f_0(980)$ $s$--channel resonance are separately evaluated and the role of the nontrivial polynomial in the Omn\`es function in a coupled channel situation is elucidated. Applications are made to $K\to \pi\pi$ and $pp\to pp\pi\pi$. Quantitative analysis of statolith sedimentation behavior was accomplished using videomicroscopy of living columella cells of corn (Zea mays) roots, which displayed no systematic cytoplasmic streaming. Following 90 degrees rotation of the root, the statoliths moved downward along the distal wall and then spread out along the bottom with an average velocity of 1.7 microm min(-1). When statolith trajectories traversed the complete width or length of the cell, they initially moved horizontally toward channel-initiation sites and then moved vertically through the channels to the lower side of the reoriented cell where they again dispersed. These statoliths exhibited a significantly lower average velocity than those sedimenting on distal-to-side trajectories. In addition, although statoliths undergoing distal-to-side sedimentation began at their highest velocity and slowed monotonically as they approached the lower cell membrane, statoliths crossing the cell's central region remained slow initially and accelerated to maximum speed once they reached a channel. The statoliths accelerated sooner, and the channeling effect was less pronounced in roots treated with cytochalasin D. Parallel ultrastructural studies of high-pressure frozen-freeze-substituted columella cells suggest that the low-resistance statolith pathway in the cell periphery corresponds to the sharp interface between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-rich cortical and the ER-devoid central region of these cells. The central region is also shown to contain an actin-based cytoskeletal network in which the individual, straight, actin-like filaments are randomly distributed. To explain these findings as well as the results of physical simulation experiments, we have formulated a new, tensegrity-based model of gravity sensing in columella cells. This model envisages the cytoplasm as pervaded by an actin-based cytoskeletal network that is denser in the ER-devoid central region than in the ER-rich cell cortex and is linked to stretch receptors in the plasma membrane. Sedimenting statoliths are postulated to produce a directional signal by locally disrupting the network and thereby altering the balance of forces acting on the receptors in different plasma membrane regions.

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of columella root cap cells has been postulated to play a role in gravity sensing. We have re-examined the ultrastructure of columella cells in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) root tips preserved by high-pressure freezing/freeze-substitution techniques to gain more precise information about the organization of the ER in such cells. The most notable findings are: the identification of a specialized form of ER, termed "nodal ER," which is found exclusively in columella cells; the demonstration that the bulk of the ER is organized in the form of a tubular network that is confined to a peripheral layer under the plasma membrane; and the discovery that this ER-rich peripheral region excludes Golgi stacks, vacuoles, and amyloplasts but not mitochondria. Nodal ER domains consist of an approximately 100-nm-diameter central rod composed of oblong subunits to which usually seven sheets of rough ER are attached along their margins. These domains form patches at the interface between the peripheral ER network and the ER-free central region of the cells, and they occupy defined positions within central and flanking columella cells. Over one-half of the nodal ER domains are located along the outer tangential walls of the flanking cells. Cytochalasin D and latrunculin A cause an increase in size and a decrease in numbers of nodal ER domains. We postulate that the nodal ER membranes locally modulate the gravisensing signals produced by the sedimenting amyloplasts, and that the confinement of all ER membranes to the cell periphery serves to enhance the sedimentability of the amyloplasts in the central region of columella cells.

A hundred years of research has not produced a clear understanding of the mechanism that transduces the energy associated with the sedimentation of starch-filled amyloplast statoliths in root cap columella cells into a growth response. Most models postulate that the statoliths interact with microfilaments (MF) to transmit signals to the plasma membrane (or ER), or that sedimentation onto these organelles produces the signals. However, no direct evidence for statolith-MF links has been reported, and no asymmetric structures of columella cells have been identified that might explain how a root turned by 90 degrees knows which side is up. To address these and other questions, we have (1) quantitatively examined the effects of microgravity on the size, number, and spatial distribution of statoliths; (2) re-evaluated the ultrastructure of columella cells in high-pressure frozen/freeze-substituted roots; and (3) followed the sedimentation dynamics of statolith movements in reoriented root tips. The findings have led to the formulation of a new model for the gravity-sensing apparatus of roots, which envisages the cytoplasm pervaded by an actin-based cytoskeletal network. This network is denser in the ER-devoid central region of the cell than in the ER-rich cell cortex and is coupled to receptors in the plasma membrane. Statolith sedimentation is postulated to disrupt the network and its links to receptors in some regions of the cell cortex, while allowing them to reform in other regions and thereby produce a directional signal.
