(1) Background: Growing evidence indicates that inflammation can induce neural circuit dysfunction and plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD). Nevertheless, whether inflammation affects the integrity of white matter pathways is only beginning to be explored. (2) Methods: We computed quantitative anisotropy (QA) from diffusion magnetic resonance imaging as an index of white matter integrity and regressed QA on C-reactive protein (CRP), controlling for age, sex, and BMI, in 176 participants with MDD. (3) Results: The QA values of several white matter tracts were negatively correlated with CRP concentration (standardized beta coefficient = -0.22, 95%CI = -0.38--0.06, FDR < 0.05). These tracts included the bilateral cortico-striatal tracts, thalamic radiations, inferior longitudinal fasciculi, corpus callosum (the forceps minor portion and the tapetum portion), cingulum bundles, and the left superior longitudinal fasciculus III. Importantly, the association remained robust after regressing up to twelve potential confounders. The bilateral fornix and a small portion of the thalamic radiation showed a positive association with CRP levels, but these associations did not remain significant after adjusting for confounders. (4) Conclusions: Peripheral inflammation may contribute to the etiology of MDD by impacting the microstructural integrity of brain corticolimbic white matter pathways.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a neurotropic herpes virus known to cause neuropathology in patients with impaired immunity. Previously, we reported a reduction in the gray matter volume (GMV) of several brain regions in two independent samples of participants who were seropositive for HCMV (HCMV+) compared to matched participants who were seronegative for HCMV (HCMV-). In addition to an independent replication of the GMV findings, this study aimed to examine whether HCMV+ was associated with differences in resting-state functional connectivity (rsfMRI-FC). After balancing on 11 clinical/demographic variables using inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW), GMV and rsfMRI-FC were obtained from 99 participants with major depressive disorder (MDD) who were classified into 42 HCMV+ and 57 HCMV- individuals. Relative to the HCMV- group, the HCMV+ group showed a significant reduction of GMV in nine cortical regions. Volume reduction in the right lateral orbitofrontal cortex (standardized beta coefficient (SBC) = -0.32, [95%CI, -0.62 to -0.02]) and the left pars orbitalis (SBC = -0.34, [95%CI, -0.63 to -0.05]) in the HCMV+ group was also observed in the previous study. Regardless of the parcellation method or analytical approach, relative to the HCMV- group, the HCMV+ group showed hypoconnectivity between the hubs of the sensorimotor network (bilateral postcentral gyrus) and the hubs of the salience network (bilateral insula) with effect sizes ranging from SBC = -0.57 to -0.99. These findings support the hypothesis that a positive HCMV serostatus is associated with altered connectivity of regions that are important for stress and affective processing and further supports a possible etiological role of HCMV in depression.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection is associated with neuropathology in patients with impaired immunity and/or inflammatory diseases. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with reductions in white matter microstructural integrity as measured by fractional anisotropy (FA), an index derived from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The neurotropic herpesvirus, human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), is a major cause of white matter pathology in immunosuppressed populations but its relationship with FA has never been tested in MDD despite the presence of inflammation and weakened antiviral immunity in a subset of depressed patients. We tested the relationship between FA and HCMV infection in two independent samples consisting of 176 individuals with MDD and 44 healthy controls (HC) (Discovery sample) and 88 participants with MDD and 48 HCs (Replication sample). The balance of supply and demand for agricultural resources in China is becoming increasingly tight due to the multiple effects of high-quality agricultural production, transformation and upgrading of food consumption structure, and climate change. Therefore, it is crucial for China to integrate the international and domestic resources and markets to ensure food security in the medium and long term. Based on a comparative analysis of agricultural resources in China and abroad, we investigate food consumption demand, consumption structure, and supply structure in China by 2035 and 2050. The agricultural resource utilization targets for China by 2035 and 2050 are proposed based on an analysis of the agricultural resource supply-demand gap as well as import potentials and sources of virtual water and virtual arable land. We find that the import of virtual arable land by China will reach a peak around 2048, with nearly 6.147×107 hm2. Virtual water imports will reach a peak around 2045. If estimated by blue water, virtual water imports will be 1.136×108 m3, accounting for 30% of the total agricultural water consumption in 2017. The increase in the import potentials of China’s arable land will mainly come from South America and Africa.

The morphological and optical properties of microstructured silicon substrates (M–Si) and inverted top‐emitting organic light‐emitting diodes (ITOLEDs) based on the M–Si/Ti/TiN/Al composite electrodes are studied. The developed M–Si/Ti/TiN/Al composite electrodes function well in improving the performance of red, green, and blue ITOLED. The Al thin film deposited on TiN silicon substrate could significantly improve the reflectivity of the electrode, and the microstructured substrate could further increase the reflective path for lights inside OLEDs. Meanwhile, by adopting a light output‐coupling layer on top of the device and using the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of the top‐emitting structure, the angle‐dependent effect of ITOLEDs based on the composite electrodes is reduced. Through employing the M–Si/Ti/TiN/Al composite electrodes, all the red, green, and blue OLEDs achieve an improved performance, and the red OLED shows the best performance enhancement, with the luminance of 26 247 cd m−2, maximum current efficient of 30.7 cd A−1, and maximum external quantum efficiency of 17.4%. As critical equipment in nuclear power systems, the stability of circulating water pumps (CWP) directly impacts the efficiency of power plants. To investigate the impact mechanisms of the unsteady flow characteristics and flow-induced forces on the rotation system, numerical simulation methods were employed to calculate the internal flow of a volute mixed-flow CWP under different flow rates (0.8Qd, 1.0Qd, 1.2Qd). The flow field results indicate that, under the part-load condition, the flow within the volute is chaotic with high energy losses, while under the over-load condition, there is a significant velocity gradient within the impeller, leading to relatively severe flow losses. Additionally, the rotor–stator interface is a major factor in flow-induced pulsations, and the asymmetric pressure distribution within the volute results in radial force imbalance. The finite element method (FEM) results indicate that the position of maximum stress on the pump shaft is closely related to the ratio of radial and axial force. Increasing the flow rate appropriately has been noted to be advantageous in reducing flow-induced forces and their amplitude, consequently diminishing the forces on the rotation system and improving the long-term operational stability of the CWP. The thermal stability of organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) has attracted great attention with their application in display areas. In this article, the expansion of films under heat shock is studied. With the increase of annealing temperature, the contact between the organic and inorganic layers becomes inferior. Doping the host material uniformly in the adjacent light‐emitting layer is proposed to improve the stability of OLEDs under thermal shock. The results show that the optimized device still maintains a stable optoelectrical performance after thermal shock at 85 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetic ciliopathy characterized by dysfunction of motile cilia. Currently, approximately 50 causative genes accounting for 60%–70% of all PCD cases have been identified in PCD‐affected individuals, but the etiology in approximately 30%–40% of PCD cases remains unknown. Methods: We analyzed the clinical and genetic data of two PCD individuals who were suspected of having PCD. Whole‐exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing were performed to identify and verify the variants in CFAP47. We also evaluated the expression of CFAP47 by real‐time quantitative PCR and immunofluorescence. Transmission electron microscopy in respiratory epithelial cells was also conducted to analyze ciliary function. Results: Two hemizygous missense variants of X‐linked CFAP47 in two unrelated PCD individuals were identified. The expression of CFAP47 in two PCD individuals was significantly reduced in vivo and in vitro assays. A reduction in the amount of epithelial ciliary cells and basal bodies from PCD individuals was also observed. Conclusions: We describe two hemizygous missense variants of X‐linked CFAP47 in two unrelated PCD individuals and prove CFAP47 variants are related to a reduced number of epithelial ciliary cells. Therefore, we suggest that CFAP47 should be known as a novel pathogenic gene of human PCD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
