Hydrodynamic pressures in soils caused by rainfalls and reservoir water fluctuations can result in increased loads and decreased shear strength of soils and have been identified as one of the most important factors affecting the stability of soil slopes. Presently, several methods have been adopted to calculate the hydrodynamic pressures for slope stability analyses. Considering the importance of large-scale slope works, the reliability of these methods should be examined. This paper is intended to review the errors occurring in a rainfall infiltration analysis for the purpose of slope stability analysis. The errors from model representation and from variability of model parameters are discussed separately. Several methods for quantifying the errors due to the uncertainty of model parameters are reviewed and illustrated. It is shown that different design assumptions and models for calculating the hydrodynamic pressures in a slope can result in significantly different factors of safety of the slope. It is also indicated that several important issues, such as the establishment of proper initial pore-water pressure conditions, flows along discontinuities, and volume changes of soils upon wetting and drying, do not appear to have been sufficiently studied.
