• A fluorine-free multifunctional integrated superhydrophobic coating is prepared by simple large-scale spraying. • The coating exhibits antibacterial adhesion and photothermal bactericidal activity. • The coating exhibits excellent mechanical-chemical stability, long-term anticorrosion and photothermal self-healing properties. • The coating exhibits excellent self-cleaning, anticorrosion and antibacterial abilities after abrasion. Superhydrophobic surface is a promising strategy for antibacterial and corrosion protection. However, the use of harmful fluorine-containing materials, poor mechano-chemical stability, the addition of fungicides and poor corrosion resistance often limit its practical application. In this paper, a high-robustness photothermal self-healing superhydrophobic coating is prepared by simply spraying a mixture of hydrophobically modified epoxy resin and two kinds of modified nanofillers (carbon nanotubes and SiO 2) for long-term anticorrosion and antibacterial applications. Multi-scale network and lubrication structures formed by cross-linking of modified carbon nanotubes and repeatable roughness endow coating with high robustness, so that the coating maintains superhydrophobicity even after 100 Taber abrasion cycles, 20 m sandpaper abrasion and 100 tape peeling cycles. The synergistic effect of antibacterial adhesion and photothermal bactericidal activity endows coating with excellent antibacterial efficiency, which against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) separately reaches 99.6% and 99.8%. Moreover, the influence of modified epoxy resin, superhydrophobicity, organic coating and coating thicknesses on the anticorrosion of magnesium (Mg) alloy is systematically studied and analyzed. More importantly, the prepared coating still exhibits excellent self-cleaning, anticorrosion and antibacterial abilities after 20 m abrasion. Furthermore, the coating exhibits excellent adhesion (level 4B), chemical stability, UV radiation resistance, high-low temperature alternation resistance, stable heat production capacity and photothermal self-healing ability. For settling the recycling problem of waste polyurethane sponges (PU) and environment pollution of oil spills simultaneously, this work exploited the multifunctional superhydrophobic PU materials via the dip-coating method, which were prepared by anchoring modified Fe3O4and expandable graphite (EG) on PU sponges under the adhesion effect of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The water contact angle and sliding angle of as-prepared PU sponges reached 154.1 ± 1.6 and 8°, respectively. Most importantly, the superhydrophobic PU sponges were endowed with the multipath oil treatment ability, which consisted of magnetically driven, gravity-driven, peristaltic pump-driven, and photothermally driven modes. Besides, the light oil absorption capacity, separation flux, and efficiency for superhydrophobic PU sponges reached 23.9 g/g, 27779 L m–2h–1, and 99.5%, respectively. Owing to the photothermal conversion ability of Fe3O4and EG, the temperature of superhydrophobic PU sponges was raised to 71.5 °C within 233 s under 1.2 solar irradiation (1200 W/m2), demonstrating its absorption potential for high-viscosity crude oils. In addition, the prepared sponges exhibited good chemical/mechanical stability, self-cleaning, and flame retardancy. In a nutshell, this article has evolved an environmentally benign and practical method for fabricating the multifunctional materials in oil spill treatment, which will efficiently accomplish the targets of low carbon and environmental management.

Traditionally, many coatings were merely concentrated on settling the inherent fire protection problem of steel structures, while surface contamination and corrosion susceptibility should also be considered. Concurrently addressing these problems in fireproof efficiency and surface multifunctionality has become an issue of great significance in further expanding the application value in industrial and daily scenarios. Based on this condition, ecofriendly, graphene-based, and superhydrophobic coatings with multifunctional integration were constructed on steel via a one-step spraying method. The as-prepared coatings mainly consist of epoxy resin (EP), silicone resin (SR), a cyclodextrin-based flame retardant (MCDPM), expandable graphite (EG), and multilayered graphene (MG). The results demonstrate that the water contact angle (WCA) and water sliding angle (WSA) of as-prepared coatings can reach 156.8 ± 1.6 and 5.8 ± 0.7°, respectively, revealing good water repellency and self-cleaning properties. The coatings can also exhibit adequate adaptability for various substrates including wood, polyurethane foam, and cotton fabrics. Besides, good durability and robustness of coatings have been also verified via acid/alkali immersion, outdoor exposure, O2/plasma etching, and linear abrasion tests. Simultaneously, the coatings can exhibit excellent anticorrosion capacity for steel materials via a double barrier effect. Most importantly, the coatings have exhibited the lowest backside temperature (234.5 °C) during fire impact tests, suggesting excellent fireproof and heat insulation performance. This fact can be ascribed to the conjunct action between the physical/chemical charring process of flame retardants and the remarkable thermal stability of graphene. Consequently, this article can be expected to further promote the development and application of multifunctional-integrated coatings for steel structures in more fields.
