We enrolled patients with oral and maxillofacial surgery who underwent endotracheal intubation under general anesthesia in the Stomatology Hospital, Zhejiang University School Of Medicine between April 2020 and April 2021. They were divided into the POST group and the without POST group. The distribution Of various characteristics in the two groups was firstly analyzed. Then, logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the independent predictors for POST occurrence. Following this, logistic regression and random forest models were constructed and their performance was evaluated to predict POST occurrence.Results: A total of 891 participants were enrolled in the study. Female gender and cough during extubation were significantly associated with increased POST occurrence in multivariate analysis (all P < 0.05). Stratified logistic regression analysis results showed that the female gender was an independent predictor for POST occurrence in the 4≤age≤ 14 and 14 60 group after adjusting American Society of Anesthesiologists status and throat and lung disease (all P < 0.05). The logistic regression model had a similar effect to the random forest model in predicting POST occurrence. Interestingly, the female gender had a higher important weight compared to the cough during extubation.Conclusion: This research reveals female gender and cough during extubation as potential risk factors for POST occurrence, which may provide guidance for the effective prevention of POST in oral and maxillofacial surgery.Keywords: oral and maxillofacial surgery, postoperative sore throat, female gender, cough during extubation, predictors

Food-derived angiotensin-converting enzyme-inhibitory (ACE-I) peptides have attracted extensive attention. Herein, the ACE-I peptides from Scomber japonicus muscle hydrolysates were screened, and their mechanisms of action and inhibition stability were explored. The quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model based on 5z-scale metrics was developed to rapidly screen for ACE-I peptides. Two novel potential ACE-I peptides (LTPFT, PLITT) were predicted through this model coupled with in silico screening, of which PLITT had the highest activity (IC 50 : 48.73 ± 7.59 μM). PLITT inhibited ACE activity with a mixture of non-competitive and competitive mechanisms, and this inhibition mainly contributed to the hydrogen bonding based on molecular docking study. PLITT is stable under high temperatures, pH, glucose, and NaCl. The zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) and copper ions (Cu 2+ ) enhanced ACE-I activity. Objective: This study aimed to compare the audiological characteristics between children with unilateral auditory neuropathy (UAN) and single-sided deafness (SSD) to establish a valid basis for the differential diagnosis of children with UAN. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on audiological and imaging evaluations of children with UAN and SSD who were treated at Beijing Children's Hospital of Capital Medical University between May 2015 and June 2023. There were 17 children with UAN, comprising 10 males and 7 females, with an average age of 4.7 years. Additionally, there were 43 children with SSD, consisting of 27 males and 16 females, with an average age of 6.5 years. Audiological assessments included Auditory brainstem response (ABR), Steady-state auditory evoked potential (ASSR), Behavioural audiometry, Cochlear microphonic potential (CM), Distortino-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), and acoustic immittance test. The results of the audiological assessment and imaging phenotypic between the two groups of children were compared and analyzed by applying SPSS 27.0 statistical software. Results: (1) The UAN group (77.8%) had a significantly higher rate of ABR wave III L than the SSD group (20.9%) ( P <0.01). The PA thresholds at 500 Hz and 1 000 Hz of children with SSD were higher than those of children with UAN, while the ASSR thresholds at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2 000 Hz, and 4 000 Hz of children with SSD were significantly higher than those of children with UAN ( P <0.05). (2) The degree of hearing loss in both UAN and SSD children was predominantly complete hearing loss. The percentage of complete hearing loss was significantly higher (χ²=4.353, P =0.037) in the SSD group (93.0%, 40/43) than in the UAN group (63.6%, 7/11). However, the percentage of profound hearing loss was significantly higher in the UAN group (27.3%, 3/11) than in the SSD group (2.3%, 1/43) ( Fisher's exact test, P= 0.023). In terms of hearing curve configuration, the percentage of flat type was significantly higher in the SSD group (76.7%, 33/43) than in the UAN group (36.4%, 4/11). The proportion of the UAN group (27.3%, 3/11) was significantly higher than that in the SSD group (2.3%, 1/43) in ascending type ( P <0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the hearing curves of the declining type and other types between the two groups ( P >0.05). (3) The proportion of imaging assessment without abnormality was significantly more common in the UAN group (81.8%) than in the SSD group (37.1%) (χ²=6.695, P =0.015). Conclusions: Compared to children with SSD, the occurrence of wave III L on the ABR test was significantly more common in children with UAN. The percentage of ascending hearing curves was significantly higher in children with UAN than in children with SSD. ASSR thresholds were significantly lower in children with UAN. The normal imaging phenotype was significantly more common in children with UAN than in children with SSD.

Objective: This study was to investigate the main characteristics and related factors of wideband absorbance (WBA) in children with normal hearing and to obtain age-specific reference range of WBA. Methods: 384 children between 0-12 years old (615 ears) who visited the Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University from October 2019 to February 2021 were enrolled, including 230 males (376 ears) and 154 females (239 ears), with totally 306 left ears and 309 right ears. Wideband tympanometry (WBT) was performed and normative WBA data were analyzed by SPSS 24.0 statistical software. Repeated measures and multivariate analysis of variance were applied to the data from 16 points at 1/3-octave frequencies (226, 324, 408, 500, 667, 841, 1 000, 1 297, 1 682, 2 000, 2 670, 3 364, 4 000, 5 339, 6 727 and 8 000 Hz) to evaluate the effects of frequency, age, external auditory canal pressures, gender and ear on WBA. Results: According to the WBT frequency-absorbance curve, the subjects were divided into seven groups: 1-month old group, 2-month old group, 3-month old group, 4-5 month old group, 6-24 month old group,>2-6 year old group and>6-12 year old group. The WBA of normal-hearing children underwent a series of developmental changes with age at both ambient pressure and tympanometric peak pressures. WBA results for 1-month group and 2-month old group exhibited a multipeaked pattern, with the peaks occurring around 2 000 and 4 897 Hz, and a notch around 3 886 Hz. WBA results for 3-month group and 4-5 month old group exhibited a single broad-peaked pattern, with the peak occurring between 2 000-4 757 Hz. The WBA of 1-month old group to 4-5 month old group decreased gradually at low frequency (226-408 Hz) and 6 727 Hz, and increased at middle to high frequency (2 670-4 000 Hz). The WBA of 6-24 month old group were significantly lower than that of 2-month old group to 4-5 month old group at all frequencies except 3 364 and 4 000 Hz. WBA results for 6-24 month old group,>2-6 year old group and>6-12 year old group exhibited a single-peaked pattern, and the peak frequency of WBA moved to the lower frequency successively. From 6-24 month old group to>6-12 year old group, the WBA gradually increased at low to middle frequencies (667-2 670 Hz) and 8 000 Hz, and decreased at middle to high frequencies (3 364-5 339 Hz). Among the 16 frequencies of all age groups, the difference between WBA under ambient pressure and tympanometric peak pressure were -0.09-0.06, and 43.75%-81.25% frequency points had statistically significant difference, which was mainly manifested in that WBA under ambient pressure were lower than that under tympanometric peak pressure at 226-1 682 Hz. There was no significant ear effect on all of the age groups. Similarly, there was no significant gender effect except for 3-month old group and 4-5 month old group. Conclusions: The WBA of normal-hearing children measured at ambient pressure and tympanometric peak pressure varied across the frequencies with age from 1 month to 12 years old, and different frequencies followed different change patterns (increase vs. decrease) in WBA. There was also significant external auditory canal pressures effect on all of the age groups. The establishment of age-specific reference range of WBA for 0-12 years old normal-hearing children in this study would be useful for clinical practice of determining normative data regarding WBT.

Oxyresveratrol (Oxy) has attracted much attention by employing it as an antibrowning agent in fruits and vegetables. In this study, the formation of cyclodextrin (CD) inclusion exhibited a certain protective effect on Oxy oxidative degradation, while hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) inclusion complex showed stronger stabilizing effects than those of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The combined use of CD and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) greatly improved the stability of Oxy-CD inclusion complexes, with approximately 70% of the trans -Oxy retained after 30 days of storage under light conditions at 25 °C. The results of the interaction between CD and Oxy determined by phase solubility studies and fluorescence spectroscopic analysis showed that the binding strength of CD and Oxy increased in the presence of HPMC. Moreover, Oxy combined with ascorbic acid and HPMC showed an excellent antibrowning effect on fresh-cut apple slices during the 48 h test period, indicating that adding HPMC as the third component will not influence the antibrowning activity of Oxy.

We sampled Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolata in both plantation and natural forests in central and western Fujian Province, China. Using tree-ring width, tree-ring width index, and basal area increment, we reconstructed the annual growth of 109 conifer individuals from four sites for the 20-year period from 1993 to 2012. We then calculated resistance, recovery, and resilience indices of those trees in response to two consecutive extreme droughts (2003-2004 and 2011) and analyzed the differences in resistance and resilience between plantations and natural fore-sts. The results showed that there were temporal differences in moisture requirements between P. massoniana and C. lanceolata , which accounted for their inconsistent responses to drought in 2003-2004. For both species, drought induced a marked growth reduction, without any clear lag effect. The growth responses during and following the 2003-2004 drought were significantly stronger than that for the 2011 drought. Those results indicated that P. massoniana was more resilient to drought stress than C. lanceolata , and the natural forests were more sensitive than plantations, but with stronger capacity to recover. C. lanceolata plantations were more susceptible to frequent extreme drought events. To mitigate the vulnerability of plantation trees to more frequent droughts in the future, we suggested select trees from genetic provenances with strong drought resistance.

Objective: To analyze the characteristics and prognosis of hearing loss in children with bacterial meningitis. Methods: This was a single-center retrospective cohort study. Patients diagnosed with bacterial meningitis who were hospitalized in Beijing Children's Hospital between 2010 and 2016 and older than 28 days and younger than 18 years at symptom onset were included in this study ( n =573). All clinical information including hearing assessment results during hospitalization were reviewed. All patients with hearing loss were followed up to repeat their hearing test and assess their hearing condition with parents' evaluation of aural and (or) oral performance of children (PEACH). Patients were grouped according to their hearing assessment results, and Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors for hearing loss in patients with bacterial meningitis. Results: Five hundred and seventy-three patients were enrolled in this study, including 347 males and 226 females. The onset age ranged from 29 days to 15.8 years. Two hundred and forty-six patients had identified causative pathogens, among whom 92 cases (37.4%) were pneumococcal meningitis cases. Hearing loss was found in 160 cases (27.9%) during hospitalization, involving 240 ears. Permanent hearing loss was found in 20 cases (16.9%), involving 32 ears. In the patients with permanent hearing loss, 87.5% (28/32) of ears were identified as severe or profound hearing loss during hospitalization. Logistic regression analysis showed that dystonia, the protein concentration level in cerebrospinal fluid>1 g/L, glucose concentration level lower than 1 mmol/L and subdural effusion were independent risk factors for hearing loss ( OR =2.426 (1.450-4.059), 1.865 (1.186-2.932), 1.544 (1.002-2.381) and 1.904 (1.291-2.809)). Conclusions: Hearing loss is a common sequela of bacterial meningitis in children. Most patients have transient hearing loss, but patients with severe or profound hearing impairment have a higher risk of developing permanent hearing loss.

Cardiac implantable devices are commonly used for superior vena cava stenosis, but there have been few reports of electrode replacement in the stenosed superior vena cava. A 73-year-old man was diagnosed with second-degree type II atrioventricular block and a permanent dual-chamber, rate-modulated pacing pacemaker was implanted 10 years previously. Because of depletion of the pacemaker battery and an increase in the ventricular pacing threshold, replacement of the pacemaker and ventricular electrode was required. During the operation, we found that the patient had severe superior vena cava stenosis on angiography, and this caused obstruction when a common guidewire was used to pass through the superior vena cava. After attempting various methods, we successfully passed through the vascular stenosis with a super slide guidewire and a long sheath, and completed replacement of the pacemaker and ventricular electrode. We summarize the related literature of superior vena cava stenosis related to a cardiac implantable device, and discuss the replacement strategy of this complication and other treatment options.

Soy protein is wildly used in food industry due to its high nutritional value and good functionalities. However, the poor storage stability of commercial soy protein products has puzzled both the producers and the users for a long time. The current study assessed the changes in protein solubility, aggregation, oxidation, and conformation of soy protein isolate (SPI) with various soluble aggregates formed at different pH values (pH 5-8) during storage. During storage, SPI samples showed a reduced protein solubility ( p  < .05), an increased protein oxidation ( p  < .05), and an attenuated conformational enthalpy (∆H). SPI with a higher pH produced more disulfide-mediated aggregates at the expense of sulfhydryl groups and experienced greater losses of protein tertiary structure and a faster reduction in solubility. Yet, all samples nearly shared similar rising trend during 8-week storage, which indicated the production of protein carbonyls was insensitive to pH. Soluble aggregates present in fresh SPI samples appeared to induce instability of SPI during storage. These findings suggested SPI prepared at pH 6 was in favor of its storage stability, and soluble aggregates presented in fresh samples should be paid more attention for further study of storage stability kinetics., (© 2020 The Authors. Taking advantages of both azide and cyanide bridges in magnetism and synthesis, an azido-cyanide mixed-bridged octanuclear [Fe III 4 Ni II 4 ] SMM of [{(enbzpy)Ni 2 (μ 1,1 -N 3 ) 2 ·(DMF)}{Tp*Fe(CN) 3 } 2 ] 2 ·2DMF·14H 2 O (1) was explored and characterized, which exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization and an S = 6 ground state benefit from the end-on azido bridges.

Central vein perforation associated with a mediastinal lesion is a rare complication of catheterization. A 50-year-old woman was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and required hemodialysis treatment. The patient developed central vein injury during attempted placement of a double-channel catheter. A computed tomographic scan and venography showed that the catheter had punctured the mediastinum from the central vein. After comprehensive assessment and multidisciplinary consultation, percutaneous catheter thrombin injection with follow-up balloon dilatation under fluoroscopy guidance successfully fixed the perforation. We summarize the therapeutic strategy of this complication and other treatment options, and discuss the related literature of central vein injury.

Mean sensitivity (MS) of tree ring is a key index representing the sensitivity of tree rings to climate. Understanding the variation of MS and its influencing factors at a large area is helpful to understand the interaction between tree growth and climate. We used 573 tree-ring width chronologies in Asia from the International Tree Ring Date Bank (ITRDB) to examine the variation of tree-ring sensitivity and potential influencing factors. The results showed that the MS of trees was high in the arid regions and cold regions. Precipitation was more important than temperature in diriving MS. Consistent with the pattern of up-down-up for precipitation, MS showed a down-up-down fluctuation with increasing altitude, indicating that precipitation affected by altitude was a key climate factor for the MS. MS had great difference due to different physiological traits among tree species. Light-adapted species, such as Juniperus przewalskii and Pinus gerardiana, had high MS due to drought tole-rance. Shade-adapted species, such as Picea and Abies, had low MS. Old trees may have high MS.

In this study, the encapsulation mechanism of oxyresveratrol and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) was studied. As this research shows, oxyresveratrol and two cyclodextrins (CDs) were able to form inclusion complexes in a 1:1 stoichiometry. However, the interaction with HP-β-CD was more efficient, showing up as higher encapsulation constant ( K F ) (35,864.72 ± 3415.89 M -1 ). The K F values exhibited a strong dependence on temperature and pH, which decreased as they increased. From the thermodynamic parameters (Δ H ⁰, Δ S ⁰, and Δ G ⁰) of the oxyresveratrol loaded β-CD (oxyresveratrol-β-CD) and HP-β-CD (oxyresveratrol-HP-β-CD), it could be seen that the complexation process was spontaneous and exothermic, and the main driving forces between oxyrsveratrol and CDs were hydrogen bonding and van der waals force. Besides, molecular docking combined with ¹H-NMR were used to explain the most possible mode of interactions between oxyresveratrol and CDs., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Oil-in-water microemulsions (O/W MEs) allow the preparation of insoluble compounds into liquid. In this study, we prepared O/W MEs to improve the solubility and stability of steppogenin (S) in aqueous liquid, and studied their ability to inhibit fresh apple juice browning. The ME technique greatly increased steppogenin solubility up to 3000-fold higher than that in water. All SMEs demonstrated good stability after acceleration and long-term storage. In particular, 0.01% SME was associated with dramatic inhibition of fresh apple juice browning after 24h at room temperature and 7days at 4°C, and its antibrowning effects were further improved when combined with 0.05% ascorbic acid. On the other hand, simultaneous encapsulation of steppogenin with vitamin E or butylated hydroxytoluene into ME did not greatly improve SME antibrowning effects. Flavonoids are an important type of natural tyrosinase inhibitor, but their inhibitory activity and mechanism against tyrosinase are very different because of their different structures. In this study, the inhibitory activity and mechanism differences between norartocarpetin and luteolin for tyrosinase were investigated by a combination of kinetic studies and computational simulations. The kinetic analysis showed that norartocarpetin reversibly inhibited tyrosinase in a competitive manner, whereas luteolin caused reversible noncompetitive inhibition. Both norartocarpetin and luteolin showed a single type of quenching and a static-type quenching mechanism. A computational simulation indicated that the hydroxyl groups of the B ring of norartocarpetin interacted with tyrosinase residues Asn81 and His85 in the active pocket, while the hydroxyl groups of the B ring of luteolin bound residues Asn81 and Cys83. HPLC and UPLC-MS/MS further confirmed that luteolin acted as a substrate or a suicide inhibitor, yet norartocarpetin acted as an inhibitor., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of noise competition on word perception in normal hearing (NH) children and children with cochlear implantation (CI). Methods: To estimate the contribution of noise competition on speech perception, word perception in speech-shaped noise(SSN)and 4-talker babble noise(BN) with Mandarin Lexical Neighborhood Test were performed in 80 NH children and 89 children with CI. Corrected perception percentages were acquired in each group. Results: Both signal to noise ratio (SNR) and noise type influenced the word perception. In NH group, corrected percentages of disyllabic word perception in SSN were 24.2%, 55.9%, 77.1%, 85.1% and 88.9% at -8, -4, 0, 4 and 8 dB SNR, corresponding corrected percentages of monosyllabic word were 13.9%, 39.5%, 60.1%, 68.8% and 80.1%, respectively. In BN noise, corrected percentages of disyllabic word were 2.4%, 24.3%, 55.6%, 74.3% and 86.2%, corresponding monosyllabic word were 2.3%, 20.8%, 47.2%, 61.1% and 74.8%, respectively. In CI group, corrected percentages of dissyllabic word in SSN and BN at 10 dB SNR were 65.5% and 58.1%, respectively. Corresponding monosyllabic word were 49.0% and 41.0%. For SNR=5 dB, corrected percentages of disyllabic word in SSN and BN were 50.0% and 38.1%, corresponding corrected percentages of monosyllabic word were 40.8% and 25.1%, respectively. Analysis indicated that the masking effect were significantly higher in BN compared with SSN. Conclusions: Noise competition influence word perception performance significantly. In specific, the influence of noise on word perception is bigger in children with CI than in NH children. The masking effect is higher in BN noise when compared with SSN.

A novel non-targeted isoflavone profiling method was developed using the diagnostic fragment-ion-based extension strategy, based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with photo-diode array detector and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS). 16 types of isoflavones were obtained in positive mode, but only 12 were obtained in negative mode due to the absence of precursor ions. Malonyldaidzin and malonylgenistin glycosylated at the 4'-O position or malonylated at the 4″-O position of glucose were indicated by their retention behavior and fragmentation pattern. Three possible quantification methods in one run based on UPLC-PDA and UPLC-ESI-MS were validated and compared, suggesting that methods based on UPLC-ESI-MS possess remarkable selectivity and sensitivity. Impermissible quantitative deviations induced by the linearity calibration with 400-fold dynamic range was observed for the first time and was recalibrated with a 20-fold dynamic range. These results suggest that isoflavones and their stereoisomers can be simultaneously determined by positive-ion UPLC-ESI-MS in soymilk., (Copyright © 2016. Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Scope: Quercetin, a flavonoid, widely distributed in edible fruits and vegetables, was reported to effectively inhibit 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4, 5-b]pyridine (PhIP) formation in a food model (roast beef patties) with itself being converted into a novel compound 8-C-(E-phenylethenyl)quercetin (8-CEPQ). Here we investigated whether 8-CEPQ could be formed in a real food system, and tested its anticancer activity in human colon cancer cell lines., Methods and Results: LC-MS was applied for the determination of 8-CEPQ formation in onion/beef soup. Anticancer activity of 8-CEPQ was evaluated by using cell viability assay and flow cytometry. Results showed that 8-CEPQ suppressed proliferation and caused G 2 phase arrest in colon cancer cells. Based on immunofluorescent staining assay, western blot assay, and RNA knockdown data, we found that 8-CEPQ did not cause apoptotic cell death. Instead, it induced autophagic cell death. Moreover, treatment with 8-CEPQ induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Inhibition of ERK phosphorylation by the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK)/ERK inhibitor U0126 attenuated 8-CEPQ-induced autophagy and reversed 8-CEPQ-mediated cell growth inhibition., Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that 8-CEPQ, a novel quercetin derivative, could be formed in onion/beef soup. 8-CEPQ inhibited colon cancer cell growth by inducing autophagic cell death through ERK activation., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The purpose of this study is to prepare an oxyresveratrol (Oxy) microemulsion (ME) with improved Oxy's solubility and stability and to investigate its antibrowning effects on fresh-cut lotus root slices. The formula of OxyME consisted of ethyl butyrate, Tween 80, PEG400, and water with w/w of 4%, 10.67%, 5.33%, and 80%, respectively. Encapsulating Oxy into OxyME greatly increased its solubility and stability compared with that of in water. Strong antibrowning effects were observed on fresh-cut lotus root slices treated with OxyME, even better than 4-hexylresorcinol. The addition of ascorbic acid (VC) into OxyME greatly improved the Oxy stability in long-term storage and antibrowning effects on fresh-cut lotus root slices. However, the simultaneous addition of calcium chloride and VC did not obviously improve the antibrowning effects compared with the addition of VC alone. The twigs of Morus alba L. were found to show strong tyrosinase inhibition activity, and the responsible active components in the extract were further investigated in this study. A flavone, named morusone (1), and sixteen known compounds 2-17 were isolated from M. alba twigs and their structures were identified by interpretation of the corresponding ESI-MS and NMR spectral data. In the tyrosinase inhibitory test, the compounds steppogenin (IC50 0.98 ± 0.01 µM), 2,4,2',4'-tetrahydroxychalcone (IC50 0.07 ± 0.02 µM), morachalcone A (IC50 0.08 ± 0.02 µM), oxyresveratrol (IC50 0.10 ± 0.01 µM), and moracin M (8.00 ± 0.22 µM) exhibited significant tyrosinase inhibition activities, much stronger than that of the positive control kojic acid. These results suggest that M. alba twig extract should served as a good source of natural tyrosinase inhibitors for use in foods as antibrowning agents or in cosmetics as skin-whitening agents.

Antisense noncoding RNA in the INK4 locus (ANRIL) has been reported to be upregulated in various types of human cancer, and is also highly expressed in normal human tissue. The aim of the present study was to identify whether ANRIL may be a possible target for colorectal cancer (CRC) therapy. Reverse transcription‑quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to quantify the expression levels of the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) ANRIL in 97 paired CRC and adjacent non‑neoplastic tissue samples. In addition, the HT29 and RKO human CRC cell lines underwent ANRIL RNA interference, and knockdown efficiency was evaluated by western blotting. Cell viability, and migratory and invasive ability were subsequently assessed. The CRC tissues were revealed to express higher levels of ANRIL lncRNA compared with the adjacent non‑neoplastic tissues (P<0.05). Furthermore, high ANRIL expression was significantly associated with reduced survival rate (P<0.05). ANRIL gene expression was successfully silenced in human CRC cells. ANRIL knockdown decreased proliferation, inhibited migration and invasion, and reduced the colony‑forming ability of the cells. These data indicated that the lncRNA ANRIL is upregulated in CRC tissues, and is associated with CRC cell pathogenesis. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms of these effects may be exploited for therapeutic benefit.

Norartocarpetin, quercetin and naringenin were found to effectively inhibit 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) formation through trapping its phenylacetaldehyde and form their adducts in roast beef patties. Six adducts [8-C- or 6-C-(E-phenylethenyl) flavonoids] formed between phenylacetaldehyde and three flavonoids were detected in roast beef patties by UPLC-MS analyses and compared with their synthetic references. These flavonoid-phenylacetaldehyde adducts were synthesised and further subjected to cytotoxicity tests on three liver cancer cell lines HepG2, SMMC-7721 and QGY-7703. The adduct 8-C-(E-phenylethenyl)norartocarpetin (NARA1) was found to significantly induce cancer cell death with IC50 values about 7 μM. After pre-treating with MAPK and caspase inhibitors, alteration of the cell morphology and cleaved-PARP were detected in liver cancer cell lines administered with NARA1. These data indicated that norartocarpetin could inhibit PhIP formation in roast beef patties and form norartocarpetin-phenylacetaldehyde adducts. Chalcones and their derivatives have attracted great interests in recent years for their comprehensive biological activities. In this study, 2,4,2',4'-tetrahydroxychalcone and its two derivatives, 1,3,5-tris-(2,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)pentane-1,5-dione (new compound) and 7,2',4'-trihydroxyflavanone, were synthesized through one-pot green procedure catalyzed by boric acid in polyethylene glycol 400. Their structures were identified by ESI-MS and NMR spectral. Tyrosinase inhibitory activity and antibrowning test results showed that compounds 1-3 exhibited strong tyrosinase inhibitory activities and significant antibrowning effects on the fresh-cut lotus root slices at room temperature in 48 h. Among them, 0.01% 1,3,5-tris-(2,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)pentane-1,5-dione combined with 0.5% VC showed the best antibrowning ability. In brief, this study offers a protocol for one-pot green synthesis of high efficiency tyrosinase inhibitors which may be suitable as antibrowning agents for fresh-cut vegetables. In this study, the inhibitory effects of eight kinds of dietary flavonoids on the formation of heterocyclic amines (HAs) were investigated in roast beef patties. The results showed that most of them exhibited significant inhibition on both total HAs and 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), one of the most abundant HAs. Among the studied flavonoids, phlorizin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and quercetin were found to be the most effective in both the reductions of total HAs (55-70%) and PhIP (60-80%). The reaction activity between the flavonoid and phenylacetaldehyde, a key intermediate in PhIP formation, showed a good correlation with the inhibition of PhIP formation in an aqueous model system (R(2) = 0.8904) and a di(ethylene) glycol reaction system (R(2) = 0.6514). However, no significant correlation was found between the flavonoid antioxidant capacity and PhIP formation (R(2) = 0.2359). The postulated adducts of flavonoids-phenylacetaldehyde were further confirmed by LC-MS analysis in the chemical models. Since phenylacetaldehyde is the chief intermediate in PhIP formation, these results suggest that the inhibitory effects of flavonoids on PhIP formation are mainly dependent on their abilities to trap phenylacetaldehyde as opposed to their antioxidant capacities.

The aim of this study is to improve artocarpanone solubility by developing an O/W microemulsion with the evaluation of its antibrowning effects. The chemical and physical stabilities as well as antibrowning effects in apple juice were also evaluated. The formulation of artocarpanone microemulsion consisted of 4% w/w of ethyl butyrate, 10.67% w/w of Tween 80, 5.33% w/w of polyethylene glycol 400, and 80% w/w of water, with a maximum solubility of artocarpanone up to 10.54 ± 0.01 mg/mL, at least 3000-folds increase in solubility compared that in water. Encapsulating artocarpanone and ascorbic acid (VC) into microemulsion simultaneously decreased modest artocarpanone solubility whereas improving its stability in long-term storage. Blank, artocarpanone and artocarpanone-Vc-loaded microemulsions demonstrated steadily during accelerated and long-term storage. Artocarpanone-Vc-loaded microemulsion showed strong antibrowning effects in apple juice at room temperature in 24h, suggesting that artocarpanone-Vc-loaded microemulsion is a good antibrowning agent for apple juices., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. A new method was developed for one-pot green synthesis 1,3,5-triarylpentane-1,5-dione, triarylmethane, and flavonoid derivatives from the reaction between 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and hydroxyacetophenones via Aldol, Michael, and Friedel-Crafts additions using boric acid as catalyst in polyethylene glycol 400. The synthetic compounds demonstrated significant tyrosinase inhibitory activities much stronger than that of kojic acid. Lysozyme is an important component of the innate immunity system against invading pathogens. An invertebrate (i-type) lysozyme from the hepatopancreas of Kuruma shrimp Marsupenaeus japonicus (Mj-ilys) was identified. The full-length cDNA of Mj-ilys was 580bp with a 429 bp open reading frame encoding a 142 amino acid polypeptide. The encoded polypeptide was predicted to have a 17 amino acid signal peptide, and a 125 amino acid mature protein with a theoretical mass of 14.099 kDa and an isoelectric point (pI) of 4.18. A Destabilase conserved domain was predicted in Mj-ilys amino acid sequences which may be stable by 10 cysteine residues forming 5 disulfide bonds. Mj-ilys may loss the muramidase and isopeptidase activities due to the lack of the key catalytic residues. Mj-ilys had high homologous of 80-82% with i-type lysozymes of penaeid shrimps. It was first grouped with other i-type lysozyme of shrimps and crabs in a phylogenetic tree predicted by the Neighbor-Joining method. Mj-ilys mRNA was expressed mainly in hepatopancreas and almost undetectable in other tissues. The mRNA expression of Mj-ilys were all found from fertilized eggs to post-larvae of 17 days (PL17), and its expression exhibited significant differences among each developmental stage. After white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) challenge (3.6 × 10(8) virions/μl), the time-dependent expression pattern of Mj-ilys in hepatopancreas and gills showed significantly different. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are important components of the innate immune system and function as the first line of defense against invading pathogens. In current study we identified, cloned and characterized a novel stylicin AMP from Kuruma shrimp Marsupenaeus japonicus (Mj-sty). The full-length cDNA of Mj-sty was 428 bp with an open reading frame of 315 bp that encoded 104 amino acids. The theoretical molecular mass of mature Mj-sty was 8.693 kDa with an isoelectric point (pI) of 4.79. A proline-rich N-terminal region and a C-terminal region contained 13 cysteine residues were identified. Genomic sequence analysis with respect to its cDNA showed that Mj-sty was organized into two exons interrupted by one intron. Tissue-specific expression revealed that Mj-sty was mainly transcribed in gills and hemocytes. Expression of Mj-sty in early developmental stages demonstrated that Mj-sty mRNA were present from fertilized eggs to post-larvae of 17 days (PL17), and the expression levels showed a significant variation in different developmental stages. After challenge of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), the time-dependent expression pattern of Mj-sty in both gills and hepatopancrease showed down-regulation at the early hours of infection, subsequently up-regulation and down-regulation, and then up-regulation at the end hours to almost the half of the controls. Norartocarpetin is a flavone widely distributed in Moraceae plants with strong tyrosinase inhibitory activity. However, its poor solubility in aqueous systems and in food grade solvents (oils) limits its extensive applications. The aim of this study was to improve the solubility of norartocarpetin by developing an oil-in-water (o/w) microemulsion with food grade components. A microemulsion was developed and characterized, and its chemical and physical stabilities were also evaluated within 8 weeks. Using the construction of pseudoternary phase diagrams, the optimized formulation of 2% w/w of ethyl oleate, 12% w/w of Tween 80, 6% w/w of polyethylene glycol 400, and 80% w/w of water was obtained, with a maximum solubility of norartocarpetin up to 1.73 ± 0.21 mg/mL, at least a 1000-fold increase in solubility. The microemulsion base and norartocarpetin-loaded microemulsion were demonstrated to be stable after accelerated and long-term conditions (8 weeks). The norartocarpetin microemulsion still showed strong tyrosinase inhibitory activity and antibrowning effect on fresh-cut apple slices. These combined results indicated that norartocarpetin microemulsion may be suitable as an antibrowning agent for fresh-cut fruits.

In recent years, the complex and heterogeneous structure of ionic liquids has been demonstrated; however, the consequences on the dynamics have remained elusive. Here, we use femtosecond IR spectroscopy to elucidate the local structural dynamics in protic alkylammonium-based ionic liquids. The structural relaxation after an ultrafast temperature increase, following vibrational excitation and subsequent relaxation of the N-D (or N-H) stretching vibration, is found to vary substantially between the ionic and hydrophobic subdomains. The dynamics in the ionic domains are virtually unaffected by the alkyl chain length and is, therefore, decoupled from viscosity. Equilibration within the hydrophobic subdomains, as evident from the dynamics of the C-H stretching vibration, is faster than that in the ionic domains and shows a remarkably low thermal activation., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A novel method allowing simultaneous analysis of PhIP, 4'-OH-PhIP, and their precursors (phenylalanine, tyrosine, creatine, creatinine, glucose) has been developed as a robust kinetic study tool by using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). A direct hydrochloric acid (HCl) extraction was applied to achieve the simultaneous extraction of all seven analytes, with the mean recoveries ranging from 60% to 120% at two concentration levels. Then, an Atlantis dC18 column selected from four different chromatographic columns was ultimately used to separate these compounds within 15 min. The limits of detection range of allseven analytes were calculated as 0.14-325.00 μg L(-1). The intra- and interday precision of the proposed method were less than 15.4 and 19.9%, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to depict the kinetic profiles of PhIP, 4'-OH-PhIP, and their precursors in pork model, reducing the analysis time and cost in the kinetic study.

Four low-dimensional ytterbium(iii)-organic compounds through hydrothermal reactions of quinoline-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (2,3-H2qldc) and oxalic acid (H2ox) with Yb2O3, namely, [Yb(2,3-qldc)(ox)1/2(H2O)3·(H2O)4]n (1), [Yb(2,3-qldc)(ox)1/2(H2O)2·(H2O)2]n (2), [Yb(2,3-Hqldc)(ox)(H2O)2·(H2O)]n (3) and [Yb(2,3-Hqldc)(ox)(H2O)·(H2O)2]n (4), were first synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis (EA), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. When the reactant ratio of 2,3-H2qldc : H2ox : Yb2O3 is 2 : 1 : 1, 1-D chain-like complex 1 with three coordinated water molecules around the Yb(iii) ion was obtained in mixed solvents of H2O and CH3OH (v : v = 10 : 1) at 70 °C, and with the increase of temperature to 100 °C, the same reactants gave 2-D 6(3) topological layer-like complex 2 with two coordinated water molecules in the coordination sphere of the Yb(iii) ion. However, when the reactant ratio was changed to 1 : 1 : 1, two 2-D 6(3) topological layer-like complexes 3 (70 °C) and 4 (100 °C) were obtained at different temperatures, in which the coordination water molecules in 3 and 4 are two and one, respectively. Obviously, these results reveal that the reaction temperature and reactant ratios play critical roles in the structural direction of these low-dimensional compounds. Interestingly, with the gradual loss of coordination water molecules to the Yb(iii) ion, the near infrared (NIR) emission of four Yb(iii)-based compounds 1-4 can be gradually strengthened with increasing order of 1 < 3 < 2 < 4, indicating that these ytterbium(iii) complexes have tunable near infrared luminescence.

Four anion-dependent 0D Zn(II)-Yb(III) heterometallic Schiff base complexes, [YbZn2L2(OAc)4]·ClO4 (2), YbZnL2(NO3)3 (3), [(YbL)2(H2O)Cl(OAc)]2·[ZnCl4]2 (4), and YbZnL(OAc)4 (5), were assembled through central metal substitution or reconstruction from homotrinuclear Zn(II) complex {[(Zn(OAc)(H2O)L]2Zn}(ClO4)2·4H2O [1; HL = 2-ethoxy-6-[(pyridin-2-ylmethylimino)methyl]phenol] with different Yb(III)X3 salts [X = ClO4 (2), NO3 (3), Cl (4), and OAc (5)], in which the Zn(II)-sensitized near-infrared luminescent performances in the four complexes 2-5 are closely related to their structural models.

Objective: To observe the effect of Qingfei Peiyuan Micro-pill (QPM) on HIV/AIDS patients with pulmonary infection of phlegm heat obstructing lung syndrome (PHOLS)., Methods: Totally 141 HIV/AIDS patients with pulmonary infection of PHOLS were randomly assigned to the treatment group (94 cases) and the control group (47cases). On the basis of Western medicine, patients in the treatment group took QPM. The therapeutic course for all was 28 days. The improvement of symptoms and signs was observed. The body temperature (BT), chest X ray, and white blood cells (WBCs) were detected., Results: The Chinese medical syndrome score was lower in the treatment group than in the control group at the 7th, 21st, and 28th day of treatment, showing statistical difference (P < 0.05). The efficacy was better in the treatment group than in the control group at the 7th, 21st, and 28th day of treatment, showing statistical difference (P < 0.05). The BT was lower in the treatment group than in the control group on the 7th day. There was no statistical difference in the patient number with normal WBCs on the 7th day (P > 0.05). But there was statistical difference in the patient number with normal WBCs on the 14th, 21st, and 28th day of treatment (P < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in the patient number with normal chest X ray on the 7th and 28th day of treatment (P > 0.05). But there was statistical difference in the patient number with normal chest X ray on the 14th and 21 st day of treatment (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: QPM had certain complementary effect on HIV/AIDS patients with pulmonary infection of PHOLS.

Artocarpus heterophyllus is an evergreen fruit tree cultivated in many tropical regions. Previous studies have shown that some of its compositions exhibited potential tyrosinase inhibition activities. This study indentified 8 new phenolic compounds, artoheterophyllins E-J (1-6), 4-geranyl-2',3,4',5-tetrahydroxy-cis-stilbene (7), and 5-methoxymorican M (8) and 2 new natural compounds (9 and 10), 2,3-dihydro-5,7-dihydroxy-2-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-benzopyran-4-one and 6-[(1S,2S)-1,2-dihydroxy-3-methylbutyl]-2-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-5-hydroxy-7-methoxy-3-(3-methyl-2-buten-1-yl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one, together with 23 known compounds (11-33), from the ethanol extract of the wood of A. heterophyllus. The structures of the eight new compounds (1-8) and two new natural compounds were established by extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments. The anticancer effects of the isolated compounds were examined in MCF-7, H460, and SMMC-7721 human cancer cell lines by MTT assay. Compounds 5, 11, 12, and 30 significantly reduced the cell viabilities of these cell lines. Especially, compounds 11 and 30 resulted in more potent cytotoxicity than the positive control, 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu), in SMMC-7721 cell line, with IC50 values of 15.85 and 12.06 μM, whereas compound 30 exhibited more potent cytotoxicity than 5-Fu in NCI-H460 cell line, with an IC50 value of 5.19 μM. In addition, this study suggests that compounds 11 and 30 from the wood of A. heterophyllus have anticancer potential via MAPK pathways.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a potentially fatal illness caused by infection with the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. TSS toxin-1 (TSST-1) contains a T-cell epitope with specificity for human V-beta-2. Binding of TSST-1 to the human major histocompatibility complex and T cell receptors activates T cells and triggers the secretion of high amounts of inflammatory cytokines, leading to TSS and potentially death. During this process, CD4+ T cells are inhibited by TSST-1, while regulatory T cells are increased. This suggests a protective immune response by the body in TSS. Thus, TSST-1 can trigger both, an inflammatory response that attacks the body and a protective response. In this review, we discuss the interaction between TSST-1 and T lymphocytes in TSS.

The absorption features of DNA nucleobases cytosine and thymine were measured by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) from 0.1 to 3.5 THz. Our experimental results clearly show that these important biomolecules exhibit distinctive absorption features in THz region. To the best of our knowledge, the subtle absorption peak of cytosine at 2.53 THz is reported for the first time. Moreover, geometry optimizations and lattice dynamic calculations on cytosine crystal were also performed with the pseudo-potential plane wave method of density functional theory by taking periodic boundary conditions into account. All measured terahertz absorption features of cytosine were assigned successfully and its absorption spectrum was reproduced according to our calculations. Furthermore, our results show that absorption features of cytosine below 3.5 THz arise from external modes in translation and rotation motions, which are dominated by the intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important cereal crops worldwide, and increasing the grain yield and biomass has been among the most important goals of maize production. The plant architecture can determine the grain yield and biomass to some extent; however, the genetic basis of the link between the plant architecture and grain yield/biomass is unclear. In this study, an immortal F9 recombinant inbred line population, derived from the cross Mo17 x Huangzao4, was used to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for 3 traits associated with plant architecture under two nitrogen regimes: plant height, ear height, and leaf number. As a result, 8 and 10 QTLs were identified under the high nitrogen regime and low nitrogen regime, respectively. These QTLs mapped to chromosomes 1 (six QTLs), 2 (one QTL), 3 (one QTL), 7 (two QTLs), and 9 (eight QTLs), and had different genetic distances to their closest markers, ranging from 0 to 22.0 cM, explaining 4.7 to 20.5% of the phenotypic variance. Because of an additive effect, 9 and 9 could make the phenotypic values of traits increase and decrease to some extent, respectively. These results are beneficial for understanding the genetic basis of agronomic traits associated with plant architecture and for performing marker-assisted selection in maize breeding programs.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy was employed to measure the terahertz absorption spectra of benzoic acid and sodium benzoate at room temperature. The origins of the measured features of benzoic acid were summarized based on previous study. Density functional theory was used to compute and analyze the molecular structure and vibrational modes of sodium benzoate in monomer. Based on the obtained results, the authors found that the THz spectral features can be used to distinguish benzoic acid and sodium benzoate totally; the essential reason for the THz spectral difference between benzoic acid and sodium benzoate is that the electrovalent bond of sodium benzoate affects the values of covalent bond lengths and bond angles, as well as the molecular interactions and arrangement in unit cell; the measured features of benzoic acid and sodium benzoate come from the collective vibrations except the peaks located at 107 cm-1 of benzoic acid and 54 cm-1 of sodium benzoate.

The ear leaf is one of the most important leaves in maize (Zea mays); it affects plant morphology and yield. To better understand its genetic basis, we examined ear leaf length, ear leaf width, and ear leaf area for quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping in a recombinant inbred line population under two nitrogen regimes. Nine QTLs, on chromosomes 1 (one), 2 (one), 3 (one), 4 (three), 7 (one), and 8 (two), were mapped under the high nitrogen regime, which explained phenotypic variation ranging from 5.4 to 14.8%. Under the low nitrogen regime, 7 QTLs were located on chromosomes 1 (one), 4 (two), 7 (one), and 8 (three), which accounted for phenotypic variation ranging from 5.5 to 20.5%. These QTLs had different mapping intervals to their nearest markers, ranging from 0.3 to 21.0 cM. Due to additive effects, 3 and 13 QTLs can cause phenotypic values of these traits to increase or decrease to some extent, respectively. This information will help understand the genetic basis of ear leaf formation and will be useful for developing marker-assisted selection in maize-breeding projects.

Based on 106×10(6)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII facility, a partial wave analysis of ψ(3686)→ppπ0 is performed. The branching fraction of this channel has been determined to be B(ψ(3686)→ppπ0)=(1.65±0.03±0.15)×10(-4). In this decay, 7 N* intermediate resonances are observed. Among these, two new resonances, N(2300) and N(2570) are significant, one 1/2+ resonance with a mass of 2300(-30-0)(+40+109)  MeV/c2 and width of 340(-30-58)(+30+110)  MeV/c2, and one 5/2- resonance with a mass of 2570(-10-10)(+19+34)  MeV/c2 and width of 250(-24-21)(+14+69)  MeV/c2. For the remaining 5 N* intermediate resonances [N(1440), N(1520), N(1535), N(1650) and N(1720)], the analysis yields mass and width values that are consistent with those from established resonances.

The twigs of Cudrania tricuspidata were found to show strong tyrosinase inhibitory activity, and further detailed component analysis resulted in the isolation of a new flavanol glucoside, (2S,3S)-2,3-trans-dihydromorin-7-O-β-d-glucoside (1), plus twenty-seven known compounds (2-28). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of ESI-MS and NMR spectral data. Among the isolated compounds, trans-dihydromorin (8), oxyresveratrol (9), and steppogenin (12) were found to exhibit significant tyrosinase inhibition activities. The two-photon transition ψ(3686)→γγJ/ψ is studied in a sample of 1.06×10(8) ψ(3686) decays collected by the BESIII detector. The branching fraction is measured to be (3.1±0.6(stat)(-1.0)(+0.8)(syst))×10(-4) using J/ψ→e(+)e(-) and J/ψ→μ(+)μ(-) decays, and its upper limit is estimated to be 4.5×10(-4) at the 90% confidence level. This work represents the first measurement of a two-photon transition among charmonium states. The orientation of the ψ(3686) decay plane and the J/ψ polarization in this decay are also studied. In addition, the product branching fractions of sequential E1 transitions ψ(3686)→γχ(cJ) and χ(cJ)→γJ/ψ(J=0,1,2) are reported.

A series of 0-D, 1-D, and 2-D metal-organic compounds through reactions of quinoline-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (2,3-H(2)qldc) with transition metal salts MCl(2), namely, M(2,3-Hqldc)(2)(H(2)O)(2) (M = Co(1), Zn(4) and Cd(7)), [M(3-qlc)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](n) (M = Co(2), Zn(5) and Cd(8)), M(2-qldc-3-OCH(3))(2)(CH(3)OH)(2) (M = Co(3) and Zn(6)) and [Cd(2,3-qldc-OCH(3))(μ(2)-Cl)](2n) (9) (where, 3-Hqlc = quinoline-3-carboxylic acid and 2-qldc-3-OCH(3) = 3-(methoxycarbonyl)quinoline-2-carboxylic acid), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. When the temperature ranged from room temperature to 70 °C, three isomorphous mononuclear complexes 1, 4 and 7 were obtained in H(2)O/H(2)O + CH(3)OH. As the temperature rose further to above 90 °C, due to the decomposition of 2-position carboxyl group in ligand 2,3-H(2)qldc, the same reactions, respectively, produced three isomorphous 2-D layer-like structures 2, 5 and 8 with 4(4) topology in water. By contrast, when the mixed solvent of H(2)O + CH(3)OH at a 1 : 1 ratio (v/v) was applied, the three above-mentioned reactions respectively gave compounds 3, 6 and 9 with the 3-position esterification of 2,3-H(2)qldc. Compounds 3 and 6 are mononuclear and isomorphous, while complex 9 has a 1-D double-stranded chain-like structure connected by two μ(2)-Cl bridges. Obviously, these results reveal that the reaction temperature and solvent play a critical role in structural direction of these low-dimensional compounds. Meanwhile, the photoluminescent property of the selected compounds is also investigated.

The phytochemical profiles of Morus australis roots, stems and twigs were firstly compared by HPLC analysis. It was found that Morus australis stem extract mainly contained one known tyrosinase inhibitor, oxyresveratrol, while its root and twig extract might contain some unknown potential tyrosinase inhibitors. The root extract of Morus australis was further investigated in this study. One new compound, austraone A, together with 21 known compounds, was isolated and their structures were identified by interpretation of MS and NMR data. In the tyrosinase inhibitory testing, some of them, such as oxyresveratrol, moracenin D, sanggenon T, and kuwanon O, exhibited stronger tyrosinase inhibitory activities than that of kojic acid. These results suggested the Morus australis root extract as a good source of natural tyrosinase inhibitors with a great potential to be used in foods as anti-browning agents and in cosmetics as skin-whitening agents., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
