Humanized mouse models with functional human genes, cells, and tissues are typically used for in vivo studies of diseases. Decades of studies on humanized mouse models have improved our understanding of hematopoiesis, infectious diseases, cancer biology, innate and adaptive immunity, and regenerative medicine. This review discusses the establishment and development of humanized mouse models and how they are used to model red blood cell-related diseases facilitating research in several biomedical disciplines. Furthermore, we provide approaches to overcome the limitations of these models.

Phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) are usually involved simultaneously in the immobilization of heavy metals in sewage sludge during pyrolysis, and thus their speciation in sewage sludge-derived biochar (SSB) profoundly affects the recycling of the nutrients and the environmental risks of sewage sludge. Here, we investigated the speciation evolution of P and S in SSB induced by ageing processes in soil using X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy. Results showed that Ca-bound compounds like hydroxyapatite dominated the P forms, while over 60% of S existed as reduced inorganic sulfides in the SSB. The stable Ca-associated P species in SSB tended to be transformed gradually into relatively soluble species during ageing in soil. The speciation composition of S in SSB remained almost unaffected when aged in pot soils, whereas about 33.6% of reduced sulfides were transformed into oxidized species after 1-year ageing in field soils. SSB significantly increased the proportion of sulfides and the contents of available P and S in the amended soil but showed relatively weak effects on the speciation distribution of P in the soil because of their similar compositions. These findings provide insights into biogeochemistry of nutrients and behaviors of heavy metals in SSB after its application to the soil environments.

A more comprehensive view on the energy properties could contribute to the deepening of thermodynamic theories and efficient utilization of energy, which has both theoretical and practical significance. As derivative concepts of exergy, energy quality and energy grade, which characterize the quality of energy, have been fully applied in the field of engineering thermophysics during the past four decades. However, their concepts and calculations have not been fully clarified, and summaries of related applications are very rare in the literature. This has led to a considerable degree of ambiguity and confusion in the utilization of these concepts, which is not conducive to the application and promotion of the concepts, and would also hinder the process of the cognition for energy properties. Based on literature research, this paper explains the history of the energy quality and energy grade concepts and expands the calculations and related benchmark issues (environmental reference states) in detail. Moreover, in order to better understand the functions of energy quality and energy grade, analysis methods derived from the concepts and their applications are reviewed. Through summarizing existing research, future research needs on energy quality and energy grade is elaborated. This paper will help to clarify the physical meanings and calculations of energy quality and energy grade, as well as contribute to in-depth thinking on the energy quality and energy grade and other potential energy properties.

The effects of temperature and CaO introduction on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contents, distribution patterns and toxicity of the products from hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of swine manure (SM) were investigated in this study for the first time. The results indicated that increasing temperature decreased total PAHs content of the hydrochar, while the PAHs toxicity firstly decreased and then increased during HTC of SM. For the aqueous product, the total PAHs content and toxicity gradually decreased with increasing temperature. CaO introduction during HTC of SM significantly suppressed the PAHs formation and promoted the transformation from higher molecular weight PAHs into lower molecular weight PAHs in HTC products, resulting in the remarkably decreased content and toxicity of PAHs. The lowest total PAHs content (1428.57 μg/kg) and TEQ value (21.33 μg/kg) of the hydrochar were obtained by 15% CaO introduction at 200 °C and 180 °C, respectively, and compared to SM, they were decreased by 73.73% and 79.51%, respectively. Moreover, 3-ring PAHs were the predominant PAHs in HTC products regardless of CaO introduction. The present study demonstrated that CaO assisted HTC at temperature lower than 220 °C was effective to reduce the total content and toxicity of PAHs in SM, and the prepared hydrochar was a promising soil amendment in view of the elimination of PAHs toxicity.

We design and demonstrate the asymmetric acoustic transmission based on the combination of a binary metasurface (BM) and a gradient index metasurface (GIM). It yields efficient asymmetric acoustic transmission for two opposite incident directions: nearly total transmission for positive incidence but nearly total reflection for negative incidence. The underlying mechanism is ascribed to the diffraction characteristics of the BM and the GIM. We exemplify the BM and the GIM by coating unit cells consisting of three-layers of acoustic labyrinthine metamaterials, which provide full phase control and total transmission. Numerical simulations agree well with the theoretical analysis.

Photocatalytic oxidation treatment is an emerging and fast developed eco-friendly, energy-saving, and efficient advanced oxidation technology for degrading hazardous pesticides. The conventional chemical detection to evaluate the effects for this process depends on the broken chemical structure, only giving residual content and product chemical composition. However, it misses direct visual detection on the toxicity and the quantitative analysis of pesticide detoxification. Here, we develop a novel strategy to combine photocatalytic oxidation with a zebrafish biological model to provide a direct visual detection on the environmental detoxification. The mortality or deformity of zebrafish embryos (ZEs) acts as an indicator. Over the irradiation duration threshold, the mortality of ZEs decreases to 23.3% for pure chlorothalonil (CTL-P) after photocatalytic oxidation treatment for 1 h, and the deformity reduces to 13.3% for commercial CTL (CTL-C) after 30 min and to 3.33% for tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMTD) after 20 min. The toxicity of CTL-C and TMTD could be completely removed by photocatalytic oxidation treatment and causes no damage to the ZE developmental morphology. Chemical analyses demonstrate the degradation of CTL into inorganic compounds and TMTD into small organic molecules. Among these highlighted heterogeneous photocatalysts (g-C3N4, BiVO4, Ag3PO4, and P25), g-C3N4 exhibits the highest photocatalytic detoxification for CTL-P, CTL-C, and TMTD.

The modified hydrochar was prepared by a facile one-pot lime-assisted hydrothermal synthesis approach and the modified hydrochar and pristine hydrochar were investigated to immobilize the heavy metals (HMs) of Pb and Cd in contaminated soils. The results showed that the modified hydrochar exerted significantly enhanced effectiveness in immobilizing Pb and Cd comparing to pristine hydrochar, resulting from the increased surface functionality and non-crystalline properties, increased pH value and enhanced electronegativity of hydrochar. By introduction with 5% modified hydrochar, the contaminated soils showed the highest value of 34.5% (Pb) and 8.1% (Cd) reductions in leaching toxicity, and significant improvements of 95.1% (Pb) and 64.4% (Cd) were observed. In addition, the concentrations of acid soluble fraction were remarkably reduced by 54.0% (Pb) and 27.0% (Cd), and the reductions were much higher than that of 29.5% (Pb) and 8.3% (Cd) for 5% pristine hydrochar treatment. The enhanced surface complexation, precipitation and cation-π interaction played an important role in the immobilization of HMs in soils. The present study offered a novel and cost-effective approach to prepare soil amendment from waste biomass towards HMs immobilization in contaminated soils.

Pyrolysis is one of the most important approaches to convert waste biomass into renewable energy and biomaterials, and the tar is the inevitable by-product of this process. In this study, carbon foams were prepared innovatively with biomass tar as the precursor through spontaneous gas foaming approach and used for dicamba removal from aqueous solution. The results showed that prepared carbon foams had unique properties including rich microporous structure and high specific surface area (reaching 1667 m2/g). In addition, the prepared carbons had high thermal stability due to the high graphitic degree. The adsorption results indicated that pH showed a great effect on the adsorption of dicamba onto the prepared carbon foams. The carbon foam exhibited ultra-fast dicamba removal and ultra-high adsorption capacity of 891.74 mg/g at room temperature. The adsorption process was well described by pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. The thermodynamic study indicated dicamba adsorption onto the prepared carbon foams was a spontaneous and exothermic process. In addition, the good reusability from recovery test demonstrated that the prepared carbon foams had promising potential for dicamba removal from aqueous solution.

Particles depositing is a severe damage to the aerodynamic and cooling performance of turbine guide vanes and a technique to decrease depositing is transverse trench. In this paper, the experiments are conducted to study the effects of different transverse trenches on the particles depositing and temperature on a plate. The particles are generated by atomizing molten wax. All the models are made based on a plate and have film cooling holes. Different transverse trenches with different widths and depths are installed along the row of the film cooling holes. The experimental results show that the trenches could alter the depositing mass and distribution on the pressure surface of the model. The narrower or deeper trench could result in the lighter depositing mass and more uniform depositing distribution on the vicinity downstream of the row of film cooling holes. However, the trenches have little effect on the depositing upstream of the row of film cooling holes on the pressure surface of the model. The more depositing under the experimental conditions leads to higher temperature on the pressure surface of the model. The temperature distribution on the vicinity downstream of the row of film cooling holes could also be altered by the trenches. The narrower or deeper trench could make the temperature distribution more uniform. This could be attributed to the effect of the trench on the depositing and the direct effect of itself on the temperature distribution.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization (co-HTC) is recognized as a promising pretreatment for upgrading fuel quality of high moisture biomass prior to further thermal conversion. The properties of the hydrochar derived from co-HTC of sewage sludge (SS) and sawdust (SD), and CO2 gasification characteristics of the hydrochar were investigated. The results showed that the hydrochar had enhanced aromatic degree and increased metals content compared to raw sludge. The hydrochar also exhibited an enhanced gasification reactivity, resulting in high carbon monoxide content in the syngas than that from SS under identical conditions. The temperature and SD/SS mass ratio had a significant influence on the syngas composition mainly by the Boudouard reaction and water gas reaction. The gasification reactivity was strongly associated with the inorganic elements, and the KAlSi3O8 inhibited while the K2CO3 promoted the gasification reaction of hydrochars. Under optimal conditions, a high gasification efficiency of 77.73% was obtained, and the lower heating value of the syngas reached 8.15 MJ/Nm3. This study indicated that co-HTC of SS and SD combined with subsequent gasification had promising potential towards syngas production with high quality.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and oxy-fuel combustion were combined for sewage sludge (SS) disposal for the first time. The combustion characteristics of HTC pretreated SS (hydrochar) under air as well as oxy-fuel combustion atmosphere were investigated by thermal-gravimetric analyzer. On the basis of combustion experiments, the kinetics parameters including energy activation, pre-exponential factor and reaction order were evaluated by Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) model and Avrami’s theory. The results showed that the hydrochars had higher ignition temperature, higher ignition index and narrower combustion stage than SS, which implied more stable combustion behaviors of the hydrochars than SS. The lower activation energy of the hydrochar obtained from HTC at the temperature of 200 °C demonstrated that the hydrochars were more easily combusted in comparison to SS under identical oxy-fuel conditions. In addition, the ash problems of the slagging and fouling were mitigated by HTC treatment. In oxy-fuel atmosphere, the burnout temperature of the hydrochars was lower than that in air. More importantly, the dewaterability of SS was substantially improved by HTC and more than 30% of drying energy consumption was saved prior to combustion. This study indicated that the combination of HTC treatment and oxy-fuel combustion offered a promising alternative for SS disposal with the benefits of energy consumption and energy recovery.

The speciation, bioavailability and environmental risk of heavy metals (HMs) in the hydrochar derived from hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of swine manure were investigated in this study. The results indicated that the majority of HMs originally in swine manure were retained in the hydrochar by HTC, and CaO addition substantially reduced the HMs concentration in the hydrochar. HTC especially CaO assisted HTC significantly promoted the HMs transformation from the bioavailable fraction to the relatively stable fraction, and thus decreased their environmental risk in the hydrochar. Moreover, the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure and diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid test revealed that the leachability and plant-bioavailability of HMs in swine manure were greatly declined by HTC especially for HTC with 15% CaO addition. The present study suggested that HTC was an effective disposal approach for swine manure from the perspective of HMs immobilization, especially for CaO assisted HTC.

The hydrochars derived from swine manure were prepared by CaO assisted hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), and their properties were investigated for the first time. The results showed that the pH and yield of the hydrochar were largely increased by CaO addition. HTC of swine manure increased the phosphorus (P) content in the hydrochar, and appropriately 100% of P as apatite-P was enriched in the hydrochar by CaO assisted HTC. Additionally, the CaO addition during HTC improved the porosity of the hydrochar. The FTIR analysis revealed that substantial functional groups were present on the surface of the hydrochar, indicating the facilitated exchange between the hydrochar and hydrophilic soil when the hydrochar was used for soil amendment. This study demonstrated that CaO assisted HTC was a novel strategy to quickly convert swine manure to the promising soil amendment especially for acidic soils.

The synthesis of carbon-based nanomaterials, ideally produced via facile, inexpensive approaches, using sustainable resources as precursors, with modulated structures, morphologies and functionalities is still challenging for energy applications. This work developed a mild one-step hydrothermal synthesis route for the fabrication of highly dispersed metallic nickel nanoparticles on hydrothermal carbons derived from waste biomass. The roles of precursor nickel ion concentration and calcination temperature in modulating the morphology, location and crystalline size of the nickel nanoparticles as well as the metal-support interactions have been delineated. The average grain size of the metallic nickel nanocrystals on the resultant Ni0.5@HCOp nanocatalysts could be tuned to 8–13 nm by varying the preparation conditions. The catalytic abilities of the Ni-based nanocatalysts towards hydrogen-rich syngas production and tar reduction were then tested in a two-stage reactor system using sewage sludge as biomass feedstock. The catalytic tests showed that the Ni0.5@HCOp catalyst calcined at 700 °C was shown to have stronger metal-support interactions compared to other Ni-based nanocomposites, which provided better suppression of coke deposition and resistance of nickel agglomeration during the catalytic gasification process. This highly active catalyst promoted formation of hydrogen-rich syngas, with up to 109.2 g H2/kg sludge, and tar yields as low as 2.12 mg g−1.

Effect of process water recirculation during co-hydrothermal carbonization (co-HTC) of swine manure (SM) and sawdust (SD) on the thermal behavior of hydrochar was investigated in this study. The results showed that process water recirculation promoted the dehydration and decarboxylation reactions, and increased the mass and energy yields of hydrochar during co-HTC. The combustion behavior of hydrochar was changed by the recirculation process with decreased ignition temperature and increased burnout temperature. Additionally, the first process water recirculation decreased the average activation energy (Ea) value of the hydrochar from 156.46 and 154.16 kJ mol−1 to 136.95 and 133.67 kJ mol−1 by Flynn–Wall–Ozawa and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose methods, respectively, and further recirculation had a slight effect on the Ea value. The thermodynamic parameter of entropy change verified that combustion reactivity of the hydrochar was enhanced by process water recirculation. The present study demonstrated that process water recirculation was feasible and environment-friendly for fuel production during co-HTC of SM and SD.

Particle deposition could decrease the aerodynamic performance and cooling efficiency of turbine vanes and blades. The particle motion in the flow and its temperature are two important factors affecting its deposition. The size of the particle influences both its motion and temperature. In this study, the motion of particles with the sizes from 1 to 20 μm in the first stage of a turbine are firstly numerically simulated with the steady method, then the particle deposition on the vanes and blades are numerically simulated with the unsteady method based on the critical viscosity model. It is discovered that the particle deposition on vanes mainly formed near the leading and trailing edge on the pressure surface, and the deposition area expands slowly to the whole pressure surface with the particle size increasing. For the particle deposition on blades, the deposition area moves from the entire pressure surface toward the tip with the particle size increasing due to the effect of rotation. For vanes, the particle capture efficiency increases with the particle size increasing since Stokes number and temperature of the particle both increase with its size. For blades, the particle capture efficiency increases firstly and then decreases with the particle size increasing.

Biochar has attracted increasing attention in water pollution control, attributed to its various merits, e.g., tunable physico-chemical properties. The oxygenated functional groups (OFGs) on biochar are key active sites for removing pollutants from water through interfacial adsorption/redox reaction. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive knowledge and perspective on tuning OFGs on biochar for enhanced performance in water pollution control. Here, this review highlighted the mechanisms of biochar OFGs in water pollution control, analyzed the strategies and mechanisms for tuning OFGs on biochar, and investigated the performances of biochars with tuned OFGs in removing inorganic/organic pollutants via adsorption/redox reactions. Specifically, strategies for tuning OFGs on biochar are far more than the well-recognized ex-situ oxidation of pristine biochar. These strategies include in-situ low temperature preservation of hydroxyl and carboxyl, in-/ex-situ oxidation of biochar, and in-/ex-situ grafting of carboxyl on biochar via cycloaddition/acylation reaction. The resultant biochars showed enhanced performances in adsorption (mainly mediated by hydroxyl, carboxyl and ketone through surface complexation, H-bonding, and electrostatic attraction) and redox reaction (mainly mediated by redox-active hydroxyl and ketone). Finally, this review presented future directions on developing biochar with specially tuned surface OFGs as a sustainable high-performance adsorbent/carbocatalyst for water pollution control.

An unprecedented increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) is increasingly attractive in response to waste-to-energy. MSW pretreatment is an essential step due to the inherent properties of MSW. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) offers an efficient approach for converting MSW into carbonaceous hydrochars. In this chapter, the formation and transformation of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during HTC of MSW were determined. The results indicated that HTC can homogenize the density and size of MSW and also increase carbon content. Moreover, the concentrations of heavy metals in the leachates of the hydrochars were lower than the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) maximum limits. Compared to MSW, the concentrations of Cr, Cd, Hg, and Zn in the hydrochars were low and the concentrations of Pb, As, Ni, and Cu were high. The concentrations of PAHs in the hydrochars increased with increasing temperature in the range of 1298.71–177698.20 μg/kg, which were much higher than that in MSW, except for H-160. The dominant PAH rings in MSW and the hydrochars were four-ring PAHs and three-ring PAHs, respectively. These findings suggest that 180°C is an appropriate hydrothermal temperature to reduce heavy metals and the toxicity PAHs of MSW.

Thermochemical conversion of biomass yields large quantities of tar as a by-product, which is a potential precursor for the synthesis of renewable carbon-based functional materials. In this study, high-performance photo-Fenton catalyst of graphite‑carbon-supported iron nanoparticles was synthesized using a self-reduction and solvent-free approach. The results showed that the tar-derived catalyst had unique properties including a defect-rich graphitic structure, high surface area, and an abundant porous structure resulting from the inherent properties of biomass tar. The iron nanoparticles were highly dispersed within the prepared catalysts and were stably anchored on the carbonaceous surface by the FeC bond. Thermal treatment can not only efficiently remove volatile pollutants but also distinctly alter the speciation of organic carbon (C) and the behaviors of residual pollutants in contaminated soils. Here we examined the distribution and bioaccessibility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in industrially contaminated site soils affected by thermal treatment (temperature ranging of 105–650 ℃) using synchrotron-based infrared microspectroscopy and n-butanol extraction (a mild solvent extractant). In the pristine soils, the sequestration and distribution of PAHs were simultaneously controlled by aromatic C, aliphatic C and clay minerals. Desorption efficiency of PAHs was substantially increased with increasing temperature, whereas the residual PAHs were strongly immobilized within their binding sites evidenced by their dramatically decreased bioaccessibility. Aliphatic and carboxylic C were gradually decomposed and/or carbonized with increasing temperature. In contrast, aromatic C remained relatively recalcitrant during the thermal treatment and was the key controlling factor for the desorption of residual PAHs in the soils with either thermal treatment or n-butanol extraction. This study is the first to visualize the changes in the binding sites and bioaccessibility of PAHs induced by thermal treatment, which have important implications for understanding the sequestration mechanisms of organic pollutants in soil and optimizing the remediation technique.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of sewage sludge (SS) with and without calcium oxide (CaO) introduction was conducted at 160–240 °C, and the yield and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were evaluated for the first time. PAHs (2972.99 μg/kg) and toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) (373.09 μg/kg) yields in SS decreased by 13.61% and 14.65%, respectively, after treatment at 160 °C and substantially increased as temperatures increased. More PAHs were distributed in the hydrochar than in the aqueous products. Hydrochar yields decreased linearly with temperature, thus increasing PAH concentration in hydrochar; 6221.98 μg/kg of PAHs in hydrocar at 240 °C exceeded agricultural use standard limits. PAH and TEQ yields at 200 °C decreased by 5.55–15.98% and 2.88–3.54%, respectively, when 3–9% CaO was added, which could be ascribed to CaO inhibition in the free radical reaction for PAH generation. Additionally, 6% CaO addition substantially weakened the acceleration effect of high temperatures on PAH formation; the decrease of PAH yield at 240 °C was 22.14%, which is higher than that at other temperatures. Consequently, the PAH concentration in hydrochar declined by 2.33–22.37%. PAH content in hydrochar obtained from CaO-assisted HTC of SS fell within agriculture use standard limit and exhibits potential for use as a soil conditioner. However, condition with a CaO amount of 15% would significantly increase TEQ yields. Considering both PAH and TEQ yields and the ecological risks of PAHs in hydrochar derived from HTC of SS, the appropriate reaction conditions were found to be 200 °C with 3–6% added CaO.

In this study, Ni nanoparticles supported on renewable porous carbon were prepared using hydrochar as a carbon precursor via in situ formation and self-reduction. The structure properties of the prepared nanocatalysts were characterized by multiple techniques, including XRD, SEM, and HR-TEM, and the dry reforming of methane (DRM) performance of the nanocatalysts in terms of conversion efficiency and reactivity stability was evaluated. The results revealed that the Ni2+ was uniformly anchored on the surface of the hydrochar, and subsequently the Ni nanoparticles were well dispersed in the composite with a diameter of less than 8 nm and had a narrow particle size distribution at a temperature lower than 800 &deg, C. With an increased temperature from 800 to 900 &deg, C, the significant sintering and agglomeration of nickel particles and the transformation from amorphous carbon to graphitic structure were observed in the composite. The nanocatalysts prepared at a temperature of 700 &deg, C (Ni@C-700) and 800 &deg, C (Ni@C-800) exhibited a high reforming conversion rate and catalytic stability of CH4 by CO2 (around 52% for Ni@C-700 and 70% for Ni@C-800 after 800 min of run-time, respectively). As for the composite obtained at 900 (Ni@C-900), the highly graphitic degree was coupled with the significantly increased nickel particle size, and this resulted in a remarkably decreased conversion efficiency. The present study offers a valuable application of the hydrochar and a facile and green approach to prepare highly active and cost-efficient Ni nanoparticles on porous carbons towards the dry reforming of methane.

Particle deposition tests were conducted in a turbine deposition facility with an internally staged single-tube combustor to investigate the individual effect of the gas temperature and angle of attack. Sand particles were seeded to the combustor and deposited on a turbine blade with film-cooling holes at temperatures representative of modern engines. Fuel-air ratios were varied from 0.022 to 0.037 to achieve a gas temperature between 1272 and 1668 K. Results show that capture efficiency increased with increasing gas temperature. A dramatic increase in capture efficiency was noted when gas temperature exceeded the threshold. The deposition formed mostly downstream of the film-cooling holes on the pressure surface, while it concentrated on the suction surface at the trailing edge. Deposition tests at angles of attack between 10° and 40° presented changes in both deposition mass and distribution. The capture efficiency increased with the increase in the angle of attack, and simultaneously the growth rate slowed down. On the blade pressure surface, sand deposition was distributed mainly downstream of the film-cooling holes near the trailing edge in the case of the small angle of attack, while it concentrated on the region around the film-cooling holes near the leading edge, resulting in the partial blockage of holes, in the case of the large angle of attack.

The physicochemical properties and combustion behavior of the hydrochar derived from hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of cattle manure were thermogravimetrically investigated. The kinetic and thermodynamic analyses based on Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) methods were also carried out. The results showed that HTC of cattle manure increased the carbon content (12.79-18.87%), fixed carbon content (22.90-57.76%) and higher heating value (14.73-21.02%) of the hydrochar. The thermogravimetric analysis indicated that cattle manure and the derived hydrochars had three decomposition stages during combustion process, and the hydrochars had higher ignition temperature, lower burnout temperature and lower comprehensive combustion index than that of cattle manure. The kinetic and thermodynamic analyses demonstrated that the hydrochar prepared at 200 °C with the lowest average activation energy value (137.40 and 134.06 kJ/mol by FWO and KAS, respectively) showed the highest combustion reactivity. These findings suggested that HTC offered an effective and alternative approach for the disposal of cattle manure to produce the energy-dense hydrochar with improved fuel properties and combustion performance.

An unreported cause of vehicle fire has been identified using a series of scientific approaches including fracture analysis. A fracture was found adjacent to the welding joint of right catalytic converter and exhaust manifold, which was the probable point of origin, of the burned vehicle. Using fracture analysis, it was verified that the fracture initiate due to the welding crack and formed far before the fire. Thus, it was confirmed that the hot air ejected from right catalytic converter via the fracture ignite the pipeline and/or fuel nearby, initiate the vehicle fire.
