The increasing demands of electronic devices and electric transportation necessitate lithium-ion batteries with simultaneous high energy and power capabilities. However, rate capabilities are often limited in high-loading electrodes due to the lengthy and tortuous ion transport paths with their electrochemical behaviors governed by complicated electrode architectures still elusive. Here, we report the electrode-level tortuosity engineering design enabling improved charge storage kinetics in high-energy electrodes. Both high areal capacity and high-rate capability can be achieved beyond the practical level of mass loadings in electrodes with vertically oriented architectures. The electrochemical properties in electrodes with various architectures were quantitatively investigated through correlating the characteristic time with tortuosity. The lithium-ion transport kinetics regulated by electrode architectures was further studied via combining the three-dimensional electrode architecture visualization and simulation. The tortuosity-controlled charge storage kinetics revealed in this study can be extended to general electrode systems and provide useful design consideration for next-generation high-energy/power batteries.

Developing advanced electrode architectures through modifying active materials, conductive fillers, binders, and electrolytes as well as processing methods has drawn significant research interest. Due to the insufficient electrical conductivity of many active materials, adding conductive carbon fillers to composite electrodes provides the necessary electrical conductivity. The dimensionality effect among different conductive fillers has a significant impact on electrochemistry, which can be associated with morphological and chemical heterogeneities of electrodes. Here, synchrotron X-ray mosaic nanotomography and X-ray spectroscopy nanoimaging provided direct three-dimensional (3D) visualization and quantification capabilities to investigate the dimensionality effects of Super P (SP) and single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) fillers on the capacity retention of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC111). The results indicate that NMC/SWCNT electrodes, with a wrapping effect from the SWCNTs, exhibited more homogeneous particle size distributions, morphological changes, and chemical states than NMC/SP electrodes, without the wrapping effect. This work developed a framework of 3D quantification methods to study the capacity fading behavior associated with morphological and chemical heterogeneities and paved the way toward designing electrodes for high rate energy storage applications.

Electronic conduction in solid-polymer electrolytes is generally not desired, which causes leakage of electrons or energy loss, and the electronically conductive domains at electrode-electrolyte interfaces can lead to continuous decomposition of electrolytes and shorting issues. However, it is noticed in this work that in an insulating matrix, the conductive domains at certain aspects could also have positive effects on the electrolyte performance with proper control. This work evaluates the limitation and benefits of electronically conductive domains in a solid-polymer electrolyte system and discusses the approach to improve the electrolyte physicochemical properties with densified local electric field distribution, enhanced bulk dielectric property, and charge transfer. By deliberately introducing the conductive domains in a regular solid-polymer electrolyte, stable cycle life, low overpotential, and promising full cell performance could be achieved.

A thick electrode with high areal capacity is a straightforward approach to maximize the energy density of batteries, but the development of thick electrodes suffers from both fabrication challenges and electron/ion transport limitations. In this work, a low-tortuosity LiFePO4 (LFP) electrode with ultrahigh loadings of active materials and a highly efficient transport network was constructed by a facile and scalable templated phase inversion method. The instant solidification of polymers during phase inversion enables the fabrication of ultrathick yet robust electrodes. The open and aligned microchannels with interconnected porous walls provide direct and short ion transport pathways, while the encapsulation of active materials in the carbon framework offers a continuous pathway for electron transport. Benefiting from the structural advantages, the ultrathick bilayer LiFePO4 electrodes (up to 1.2 mm) demonstrate marked improvements in rate performance and cycling stability under high areal loadings (up to 100 mg cm-2). Simulation and operando structural characterization also reveal fast transport kinetics. Combined with the scalable fabrication, our proposed strategy presents an effective alternative for designing practical high energy/power density electrodes at low cost.

Multi-scale physics-based models, which have been parameterized and validated with discharge experiments, are optimized by varying porosity and mass loading to achieve maximum energy density. Although transport losses occur on both the electrode and particle scales, the electrode-scale optimal design is independent of the smaller scale properties. Electrode-scale properties such as tortuosity, electrolyte concentration, and Li-ion diffusion coefficient all impact optimal design. However, the impact can be generalized and the optimal results follow a general design rule that is captured in convenient correlations: ϵ = 0.13 log 10 ( k ϵ C r τ F D 0 c 0 ) and Q a = k Q / k ϵ C r τ / ( F D 0 c 0 ) , which provide guidelines for optimization of electrode architectures. The correlations are also in agreement with prior optimization results in the literature.

Thick electrodes, although promising toward high-energy battery systems, suffer from restricted lithium-ion transport kinetics due to prolonged diffusion lengths and tortuous transport pathways. Despite the emerging low-tortuosity designs, capacity retention under higher current densities is still limited. Herein, we employ a modified ice-templating method to fabricate low-tortuosity porous electrodes with tunable wall thickness and channel width and systematically investigate the critical impacts of the fine structural parameters on the thick electrode electrochemistry. While the porous electrodes with thick walls show diminished capability under a C-rate larger than 1.5 C, those with thinner walls could maintain ∼70% capacity under 2.5 C. The superior capacity retention is ascribed to the fast diffusion into the thin lamellar walls compared with their thicker counterparts. This study provides deeper insights into structure-affected electrochemistry and opens up new perspective of 3D porous architectural designs for high-energy and high-power electrodes.

Increasing the energy density of lithium-sulfur batteries necessitates the maximization of their areal capacity, calling for thick electrodes with high sulfur loading and content. However, traditional thick electrodes often lead to sluggish ion transfer kinetics as well as decreased electronic conductivity and mechanical stability, leading to their thickness-dependent electrochemical performance. Here, free-standing and low-tortuosity N, O co-doped wood-like carbon frameworks decorated with carbon nanotubes forest (WLC-CNTs) are synthesized and used as host for enabling scalable high-performance Li-sulfur batteries. EIS-symmetric cell examinations demonstrate that the ionic resistance and charge-transfer resistance per unit electro-active surface area of S@WLC-CNTs do not change with the variation of thickness, allowing the thickness-independent electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries. With a thickness of up to 1200 µm and sulfur loading of 52.4 mg cm−2, the electrode displays a capacity of 692 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 C with a low E/S ratio of 6. Moreover, the WLC-CNTs framework can also be used as a host for lithium to suppress dendrite growth. With these specific lithiophilic and sulfiphilic features, Li-S full cells were assembled and exhibited long cycling stability., Improving the energy density of lithium-sulfur batteries is necessary for their practical application. Here, the authors report free-standing and low-tortuosity carbon frameworks as host for sulfur and lithium, enabling scalable thickness independent electrochemical performance.

In this work, the Na-K liquid alloy with a charge selective interfacial layer is developed to achieve an impressively long cycling life with small overpotential on a sodium super-ionic conductor solid-state electrolyte (NASICON SSE). With this unique multi-cation system as the platform, we further propose a unique model that contains a chemical decomposition domain and a kinetic decomposition domain for the interfacial stability model. Based on this model, two charge selection mechanisms are proposed with dynamic chemical kinetic equilibrium and electrochemical kinetics as the manners of control, respectively, and both are validated by the electrochemical measurements with microscopic and spectroscopic characterizations. This study provides an effective design for high-energy-density solid-state battery with alkali Na-K anode, but also presents a novel approach to understand the interfacial chemical processes that could inspire and guide future designs.

Converting CO2 and H2 O into carbon-based fuel by IR light is a tough task. Herein, compared with other single-component photocatalysts, the most efficient IR-light-driven CO2 reduction is achieved by an element-doped ultrathin metallic photocatalyst-Ni-doped CoS2 nanosheets (Ni-CoS2 ). The evolution rate of CH4 over Ni-CoS2 is up to 101.8 μmol g-1 h-1 . The metallic and ultrathin nature endow Ni-CoS2 with excellent IR light absorption ability. The PL spectra and Arrhenius plots indicate that Ni atoms could facilitate the separation of photogenerated carriers and the decrease of the activation energy. Moreover, in situ FTIR, DFT calculations, and CH4 -TPD reveal that the doped Ni atoms in CoS2 could effectively depress the formation energy of the *COOH, *CHO and desorption energy of CH4 . This work manifests that element doping in atomic level is a powerful way to control the reaction intermediates, providing possibilities to realize high-efficiency IR-light-driven CO2 reduction.

Because it has been demonstrated to be effective toward faster ion diffusion inside the pore space, low-tortuosity porous architecture has become the focus in thick electrode designs, and other possibilities are rarely investigated. To advance current understanding in the structure-affected electrochemistry and to broaden horizons for thick electrode designs, we present a gradient electrode design, where porous channels are vertically aligned with smaller openings on one end and larger openings on the other. With its 3D morphology carefully visualized by Raman mapping, the electrochemical properties between opposite orientations of the gradient electrodes are compared, and faster energy storage kinetics is found in larger openings and more concentrated active material near the separator. As further verified by simulation, this study on gradient electrode design deepens the knowledge of structure-related electrochemistry and brings perspectives in high-energy battery electrode designs.

The ever-growing energy demand of modern society calls for the development of high-loading and high-energy-density batteries, and substantial research efforts are required to optimize electrode microstructures for improved energy storage. Low-tortuosity architecture proves effective in promoting charge transport kinetics in thick electrodes; however, heterogeneous electrochemical mass transport along the depth direction is inevitable, especially at high C-rates. In this work, we create an active material gradient in low-tortuosity electrodes along ion-transport direction to compensate for uneven reaction kinetics and the nonuniform lithiation/delithiation process in thick electrodes. Solvents play an essential role in many areas of chemistry and is the cornerstone of understanding reactivity in solution-phase reactions. Solvent effects have been widely observed in intercalation reactions; however, understanding of the influence of solvents on the thermodynamics and kinetics remains largely elusive in intercalation chemistry. Now, the solvent-dependent kinetics of ferrocene intercalation into a layered vanadyl phosphate (VOPO4 ⋅2 H2 O) host is presented, with a special focus on primary alcohols. From methanol to 1-hexnaol, the intercalation rate peaks in 1-propanol (80 times faster than the slowest case in methanol). Similar kinetics of exfoliation are also found in these solvents without ferrocene. The correlation between intercalation and exfoliation is understood at atomic level by DFT calculations, which reveal the role of pre-intercalated solvent molecules play in intralayer interactions, interlayer expansion, and layer sliding.

A common practice in thick electrode design is to increase porosity to boost charge transport kinetics. However, a high porosity offsets the advantages of thick electrodes in both gravimetric and volumetric energy densities. Here we design a freestanding thick electrode composed of highly densified active material regions connected by continuous electrolyte-buffering voids. By wet calendering of the phase-inversion electrode, the continuous compact active material region and continuous ion transport network are controllably formed. Rate capabilities and cycling stability at high LiFePO4 loading of 126 mg cm-2 were achieved for the densified cathode with porosity as low as 38%. The decreased porosity and efficient void utilization enable high gravimetric/volumetric energy densities of 330 Wh kg-1 and 614 Wh L-1, as well as improved power densities. The versatility of this method and the industrial compatible "roll-to-roll" fabrication demonstrate an important step toward the practical application of thick electrodes.

As batteries revolutionize all technological areas – from miniaturized electronic devices to electric vehicles and to large-scale energy storage, understanding the complex morphological, chemical and structural evolution and their interplays has been at the forefront of the research. Synchrotron X-ray characterization techniques provide insights into the electrochemical reactions and multiscale, multiphysics environments to address the fundamental mechanisms in these systems. The presentation will highlight the application of synchrotron X-ray analysis in two Li-ion battery systems, including both aqueous and non-aqueous systems. X-ray nano-tomography via transmission X-ray microscopy and spectroscopic imaging, complemented by other diffraction, spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, will be discussed. We will present how synchrotron X-ray nano-tomography and quantitative 3D morphological analysis were instrumental in revealing the dimensionality effect of conductive carbon fillers in LiNi 1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC111) cathode [1]. Additionally, we will discuss how a multimodal characterization approach offered insights when probing kinetics of water-in-salt aqueous batteries with thick, porous LiV3O8-LiMn2O4 electrodes [2, 3]. Through the morphological and chemical analyses, the work aims to facilitate the design of future advanced energy storage materials, as well as provide a novel characterization framework for studying a wider range of electrochemical systems. Charge transport is a key process that dominates battery performance, and the microstructures of the cathode, anode, and electrolyte play a central role in guiding ion and/or electron transport inside the battery. Rational design of key battery components with varying microstructure along the charge-transport direction to realize optimal local charge-transport dynamics can compensate for reaction polarization, which accelerates electrochemical reaction kinetics. Here, the principles of charge-transport mechanisms and their decisive role in battery performance are presented, followed by a discussion of the correlation between charge-transport regulation and battery microstructure design. The design strategies of the gradient cathodes, lithium-metal anodes, and solid-state electrolytes are summarized. Future directions and perspectives of gradient design are provided at the end to enable practically accessible high-energy and high-power-density batteries.

The ever-growing needs for renewable energy demand the pursuit of batteries with higher energy/power output. A thick electrode design is considered as a promising solution for high-energy batteries due to the minimized inactive material ratio at the device level. Most of the current research focuses on pushing the electrode thickness to a maximum limit; however, very few of them thoroughly analyze the effect of electrode thickness on cell-level energy densities as well as the balance between energy and power density. Here, a realistic assessment of the combined effect of electrode thickness with other key design parameters is provided, such as active material fraction and electrode porosity, which affect the cell-level energy/power densities of lithium-LiNi0.6 Mn0.2 Co0.2 O2 (Li-NMC622) and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cells as two model battery systems, is provided. Based on the state-of-the-art lithium batteries, key research targets are quantified to achieve 500 Wh kg-1 /800 Wh L-1 cell-level energy densities and strategies are elaborated to simultaneously enhance energy/power output. Furthermore, the remaining challenges are highlighted toward realizing scalable high-energy/power energy-storage systems.

Organic–inorganic superlattices are a class of artificial structures of significant scientific and technological importance. Forming these hybrid materials can be achieved via controlled intercalation of organic molecules into inorganic layered hosts, which is a complex course involving multiple physicochemical processes. In solution phase, it is further complicated by interaction of solvent molecules with the intercalant and/or host. Here we describe an intercalation system exhibiting strong solvent-dependent kinetics and phase evolution. In revisiting intercalation of ferrocene into layered VOPO4·2H2O material by taking into account the influence of solvent, we are able to unravel molecular configurations of ferrocene molecules. An exclusive orientation of ferrocene but different arrangements among the layers are concluded in two model solvents. The applications of lithium-ion batteries are limited, as they cannot fulfill the requirements for high power output and reversible energy storage. The main challenges are centered around developing electrode architectures to produce both high energy and power. As one of the key components, conductive fillers play a vital role in battery electrodes, contributing to the electrical conductivity and shaping electrode structures, which significantly determine the rate capability. In this study, the dimensionality effect of conductive fillers on electrochemical performance is elucidated in thick electrodes for scalable energy storage. In particular, three types of conductive fillers: single-walled carbon nanotubes, graphene nanosheets, and Super P, are studied using commercial LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 as the model material. The role of these conductive fillers on electrode morphology, electrical percolation, and electrochemical properties of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 electrodes is comparatively investigated. Notably, electrodes with single-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit superior rate performance owing to both high electrical conductivity and tight wrapping architecture, which was further revealed by various advanced structural and electrochemical characterization. This work demonstrates the dimensionality effect of conductive fillers on both electrochemistry and electrode architecture and highlights the advantages of 1D conductive filler in thick electrodes, which brings new insights in future high energy/power systems.

2D nanosheets have been widely explored as electrode materials owing to their extraordinarily high electrochemical activity and fast solid-state diffusion. However, the scalable electrode fabrication based on this type of material usually suffers from severe performance losses due to restricted ion-transport kinetics in a large thickness. Here, a novel strategy based on evaporation-induced assembly to enable directional ion transport via forming vertically aligned nanosheets is reported. The orientational ordering is achieved by a rapid evaporation of mixed solvents during the electrode fabrication process. Compared with conventional drop-cast electrodes, which exhibit a random arrangement of the nanosheets and obvious decrease of rate performance with increasing thickness, the electrode based on the vertically aligned nanosheets is able to retain the original high rate capability even at high mass loadings and electrode thickness. Combined electrochemical and structural characterization reveals the electrode composed of orientation-controlled nanosheets to possess lower charge-transfer resistances, leading to more complete phase transformation in the active material.

Directly splitting water into H2 and O2 with solar light is extremely important; however, the overall efficiency of water splitting still remains extremely low. Two types of ultrathin semiconductor layers with the same elements and the same thicknesses were designed to uncover how different atomic arrangements influence water-splitting efficiency thermodynamically and kinetically. As an example, tetrahedrally coordinated blende and octahedrally coordinated rocksalt CoO atomic layers with nearly the same thicknesses were synthesized for the first time. The blende CoO atomic layers have a smaller Eg and abundant d-d internal transition features relative to the rocksalt CoO atomic layers, which ensure enhanced visible-light harvesting ability. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Bader charge for Co atoms in blende CoO atomic layers is larger than that of the rocksalt CoO atomic layers, which facilitates photocarrier transfer kinetics, as verified by photoluminescence spectra and time-resolved fluorescence emission decay spectra. In situ FTIR spectra and energy calculations reveal that the *OOH dissociation step is the rate-limiting step, where the blende CoO atomic layers possess a smaller *OOH dissociation energy thanks to their higher Bader charge and stronger steric effect, as confirmed by the elongated Co-OOH bonds. The blende CoO atomic layers exhibit visible-light-driven H2 and O2 formation rates of 4.43 and 2.63 μmol g-1 h-1 , roughly 3.7 times higher than those of the rocksalt CoO atomic layers.

Structural parameters of ternary transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) alloy usually obey Vegard law well, while interestingly it often exhibits boosted electrocatalytic performances relative to its two pristine binary TMDs. To unveil the underlying reasons, we propose an ideal model of ternary TMDs alloy monolayer. As a prototype, MoSeS alloy monolayers are successfully synthesized, in which X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy manifests their shortened Mo-S and lengthened Mo-Se bonds, helping to tailor the d-band electronic structure of Mo atoms. Density functional theory calculations illustrate an increased density of states near their conduction band edge, which ensures faster electron transfer confirmed by their lower work function and smaller charge-transfer resistance. Energy calculations show the off-center charge around Mo atoms not only benefits for stabilizing COOH* intermediate confirmed by its most negative formation energy, but also facilitates the rate-limiting CO desorption step verified by CO temperature programmed desorption and electro-stripping tests. As a result, MoSeS alloy monolayers attain the highest 45.2 % Faradaic efficiency for CO production, much larger than that of MoS2 monolayers (16.6 %) and MoSe2 monolayers (30.5 %) at -1.15 V vs. RHE. This work discloses how the partially delocalized charge in ternary TMDs alloys accelerates electrocatalytic performances at atomic level, opening new horizons for manipulating CO2 electroreduction properties.
