Abstract During coal mining operations, the coal will be deformed and damaged due to multiple mining disturbances (MMD), often resulting in disasters, like rock burst. To understand the evolution rules of coal deformation under MMD and its final fracture characteristics after impact dynamic load loading, reduce the adverse effects of mining disturbances, and improve disaster prevention and control capabilities, quasi-static uniaxial cyclic loading-unloading (L-U) and dynamic axial compression tests were conducted on large-sized coal-like samples. During the tests, three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring technology were utilized to accurately capture the full-field deformation and AE response data, facilitating a systematic analysis of deformation and fracture characteristics. The results show that: (1) Under the cyclic L-U effect induced by MMD, each loading cycle causes compression deformation with partial recovery during unloading, presenting an overall “wavy” variation trend. (2) The maximum load is the most critical factor affecting the damaged coal deformation, with smaller load resulting in less overall sample deformation. (3) After the impact dynamic loading, the damaged samples suffered large-scale impact splitting failure, with the compressive-shear layer failure mainly occurred inside the holes. (4) Lower loading during cyclic L-U process correlate with reduced damage degree, and smaller debris particles with a higher fractal dimension when impact failure occurs, indicating a more severe impact failure. (5) With multiple cycles of L-U, the cracks inside the sample gradually extend and expand from around the hole to the outside. The greater the load and the number of cycles, the more serious the crack damage will be. (6) In the practical mining process, it is crucial to reinforce roadway interiors while minimizing low-loading cyclic disturbances induced by MMD. The study has obtained the deformation evolution rules and failure characteristics of coal under MMD, providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of corresponding engineering disasters.

In view of the current situation that mine impact risk evaluation mainly focuses on the design stage or prior to the implementation of anti-impact measures, and lacks the safety evaluation of mining face after the implementation of anti-impact measures, the types of rock burst are divided into five types: coal type, coal pillar type, roof type, fault type and comprehensive type, taking into account the occurrence location, failure form, load type and focal location; based on the idea of classification prevention and control, a classification weighted evaluation method is proposed, considering the impact of impact risk, roadway surrounding rock, monitoring and early warning system, anti-impact support system, anti-impact rock pressure prevention measures and anti-impact management ability on anti-impact safety; the calculation formula of safety factor of anti-impact is given. The safety level of anti-impact is divided into three levels: safety, basic safety and unsafe. Taking the 31119 working face of a mine as an example, the complete process and result of anti-impact safety evaluation are given. The safety evaluation of some typical mining face with impact risk is carried out by using the classification weighting evaluation method, and the reliability of the evaluation results is verified by combining with the actual impact occurrence.

Abstract Coal burst is a serious hazard in deep coal mining. To investigate the coal burst proneness evolution during multiple mining disturbances (MMD), this paper implemented a range of uniaxial cyclic loading–unloading tests coupled with acoustic emission (AE) measurement to simulate the loading–unloading effects of the MMD. The maximum load was used to simulate the highest load that the coal has endured in history, the loading–unloading rate was used to simulate the mining speed, and the loading–unloading cycles were used to simulate the number of mining disturbances. Finally, the burst proneness indexes of the damaged coal sample are measured and compared with the origin coal sample. Analysis on the experiment results suggest that, the burst proneness increases when the maximum load is 30% of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), interestingly, when the low loading–unloading rate is applied, 50% of the UCS enlarge the burst proneness as well. However, it decreases when the maximum load is 70% of the UCS. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the maximum load, loading–unloading rate, and loading–unloading cycles exhibit decreasing influence sensitivity to the elastic modulus, as well as to the UCS and duration of dynamic fracture. Similarly, the influence sensitivity of maximum load, loading–unloading cycles, and loading–unloading rate to the elastic strain energy index decreases, as well as to the bursting energy index. To ensure the safety of coal mining, it is crucial to avoid the disturbances that would put the coal under low loading and low loading rate.

It is hard to control roadways effectively with a heightened burst risk using conventional support techniques, which may cause burst fatalities in the coal mine. Thus, an in-situ modification method, which involves artificially constructing a cracked zone and a reinforced zone, was proposed to improve the stability of the roadways with heightened burst risk. This paper investigated the efficiency to non of the in-situ modification method in improving burstroadway safety by performing a physical experiment. The results of the experiment indicated that the dynamic stress was obviously reduced in the modified roadway. Accordingly, the influence factors of the in-situ modification method were explored using numerical simulation. It was found that the thickness and the degree of damage to the cracked zone were key governing factors in reducing energy and improving roadway stability. The energy dissipation value increased as the thickness and the degree of damage to the cracked zone increased but showed a slower growth trend when the thickness and the degree of damage to the cracked zone increased to a certain value. In addition, the high sensitivity to dynamic load was found in parts of the roadway side exhibiting a larger stress reduction rate even with thinner cracked zone thickness and a lower degree of damage. This research provides an effective and economical method for coal roadways with heightened burst risk.

Monitoring and providing warnings for coal mine rockburst disasters is a worldwide problem. Several rockburst accidents have occurred in a 1301 belt transport chute near a 1300 fully mechanized caving mine face. To address this issue, an empirical study of the occurrence mechanism of rockbursts in the adjacent area of the fully mechanized top-coal caving face was carried out. This paper mainly addresses the following issues: (1) based on microseismic monitoring technology, the distribution characteristics of the host-rock-supported pressure of the 1300 working face were measured, and the evolution and distribution of the deep-well caving working face host-rock-supported pressure were analyzed. It is revealed that the occurrence mechanism of rockburst in the adjacent area is actually caused by the evolution and superposition of the lateral abutment pressure of the 1300 stope, and the stress of the original rock along the 1301 belt transport down chute; (2) a theoretical calculation model of dynamic and static abutment pressure in longwall stope is built, and an example is tested. The results show that the peak position of lateral abutment pressure of the coal body outside the 1300 goaf is around 63 m, and the peak value of abutment pressure is around 47 MPa; (3) coal body stress monitoring, bolt dynamometer detection, and other means are compared and analyzed. At the same time, with the help of CT geophysical prospecting and drilling cutting measurements, it is concluded that the 1301 belt transport down chute is in the bearing pressure influence zone (superimposed zone), which further verifies the validity of microseismic analysis results and the accuracy of the above theoretical model. Based on this, the early warning system and prevention measures for rockburst based on microseismic monitoring are proposed. The engineering practice shows that the dynamic and static bearing pressure distribution and evolution law of the working face can be dynamically obtained by using microseismic technology, which provides a basis for the accurate prediction and treatment of rockbursts.

Abstract The revelation of the distribution characteristics of stress and fractures in the floor strata is of great significance to improve the regional gas drainage efficiency and to eliminate or reduce the risk of coal and gas outburst in adjacent coal seams during multi‐seam mining. In this paper, the stress distribution in the floor under mining condition was derived, and the characteristics of stress zones in the floor were elaborated while mining the 22201 working face in Shaqu coal mine in Shanxi province, China. Besides, the propagation laws of fractures in different stress zones were theoretically analyzed, and the distribution law of fracture angles in the floor strata under different mining‐induced stresses was obtained. The research results demonstrate that the compression and transition zones show high vertical stress and less developed fractures and are dominated by fractures with a large angle (>60°), which is unfavorable for gas drainage. The expansion zone in the floor within 2‐40 m in the rear of the working face is characterized by high unloading degree of vertical stress and developed fractures. Tunnels in several mines in Shaanxi Province, China, which are subject to multiple stress fields, are used as case studies to clarify the structural problems associated with rock bursts that occur in high-stress mines. Field studies featuring field measurements and theoretical analysis are used to investigate the modes and mechanisms of failure. The following are the main findings: (1) a model for distributing the dominant pressure features around the goaf was established by analyzing the stress distribution induced by the goafs on both sides of the excavated zone in a coal seam. The model reveals the pressure distribution in the tunnel-cut area, which is the mechanical factor responsible for rockburst. (2) Because of the goafs acting on both sides of the tunnel, an area of concentrated stress was formed, and stress was transferred to the coal seam. The intense tunnel-cutting action can reduce the stability of the coal. The plastic area caused by tunnel mining and a reduction in the elastic area of the tunnel-cut coal pillars in each segment, increase the possibility for rockburst under the application of dynamic-static stress; this process is known as a stabilizing factor. (3) Due to the combined effect of the tunnel-cut and goafs on both sides, most of the microseismic incidents happened in the core area of coal pillar and in the side of tunnels. When the stress applied on coal pillar is more than critical strength, burst and mine earthquake can be induced. Our study focused mainly on rockburst incidents that occurred in coal mines in Shaanxi Province, which were caused by tunnel-cut coal seams that were subject to multiple stress fields. The study has direct implications for developing new and improved guidelines for preventing rockburst in mines.

Deep granite is the ideal surrounding rock for nuclear waste geological disposal reservoir and its permeability is the key factor for nuclide migration. In order to study the permeability evolution characteristics of surrounding rocks in the near field of the disposal reservoir under different confining pressures during excavation, the mechanical and permeability properties of granite were explored through triaxial compression experiments associated with acoustic emission techniques. Experiment results suggest that the permeability exhibited typical pore percolation and fracture flow during the compressive damage process and it has an obvious relationship with the volumetric strain before and after dilation. According to such a relationship, a full-stage permeability model was proposed which is characterized by only 2 parameters. This permeability model was verified by the experiment data to be of good feasibility and effectiveness, exhibiting well fitness to the experiment under various confining pressures. According to the elastoplastic mechanical model that is available from other researchers, discussion was implemented and which convinced us that it is feasible to reproduce the real conditions of hydromechanical processes by combing the proposed permeability model and damage-based elastoplastic model in numerical modelling.

Determining the parameters of boreholes drilled for relieving pressure in coal seams is the key preventing and controlling rock bursts in boreholes of large diameter. In this study, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, literature research, and other analysis methods are applied to study the angles of elastic energy dissipation and stress transfer, the distribution law of the pressure relief area, and the areas of stress concentration, energy, stress, displacement, and plastic behavior of large-diameter pressure relief boreholes in coal seams under high-stress conditions. The results are then used to evaluate the relationship between large-diameter pressure relief boreholes and the borehole arrangement. The following results are obtained. (1) A large-diameter results in a large amount of elastic energy released by the surrounding coal, low residual elastic energy density, strong interaction between boreholes, large pressure relief range of the borehole, and high pressure relief efficiency. (2) The main evaluation factor of the borehole pressure relief effect is its thickness and stress concentration area; secondary evaluation is based on the areas of energy, displacement, stress, and plastic behavior. (3) Six evaluation index systems are established to evaluate the effects of borehole pressure relief, which are found to be the thicknesses of the borehole pressure relief area and stress concentration area, reduction degree of energy density, percentage of stress reduction, displacement, and penetration degree of the plastic area. (4) It is determined that when the diameters of the pressure relief boreholes are 100, 120, 180, and 200 mm, a single-row borehole arrangement is adopted; a three-pattern borehole arrangement is adopted with diameters of 140 and 160 mm. These research results can provide theoretical support in selecting reasonable borehole arrangements for pressure relief boreholes of different diameters.

In order to prevent the multi-dynamic disasters induced by rock burst and roof water inrush in strong rock burst coal seams under multi-aquifers, such as is the case with the 207 working face in the Tingnan coal mine considered in this study, the exhibited characteristics of two types of dynamic disasters, namely rock burst and water inrush, were analyzed. Based on the lithology and predicted caving height of the roof, the contradiction between rock burst and water inrush was analyzed. In light of these analyses, an integrated method, roof pre-splitting at a high position and shattering at a low position, was proposed. According to the results of numerical modelling, pre-crack blasting at higher rock layers enables a cantilever roof cave in time, thereby reducing the risk of rock burst, and pre-crack blasting at underlying rock layers helps increase the crushing degree of the rock, which is beneficial for decreasing the caving height of rock layers above goaf, thereby preventing the occurrence of water inrush. Finally, the proposed method was applied in an engineering case, and the effectiveness of this method for prevention and control of multi-dynamics disasters was evaluated by field observations of the caving height of rock layers and micro-seismic monitoring. As a result, the proposed method works well integrally to prevent and control rock burst and water inrush.

The mechanism of preventing rockburst through deep-hole precracking blasting was studied based on experimental test, numerical simulation, and field testing. The study results indicate that the deep-hole precracking could change the bursting proneness and stress state of coal-rock mass, thereby preventing the occurrence of rockburst. The bursting proneness of the whole composite structure could be weakened by the deep-hole precracking blasting. The change of stress state in the process of precracking blasting is achieved in two ways: (1) artificially break the roof apart, thus weakening the continuity of the roof strata, effectively inducing the roof caving while reducing its impact strength; and (2) the dynamic shattering and air pressure generated by the blasting can structurally change the properties of the coal-rock mass by mitigating the high stress generation and high elastic energy accumulation, thus breaking the conditions of energy transfer and rock burst occurrence.
