While laser surface texturing (LST) is a promising manufacturing technique for surface functionalization, simultaneously realizing high precision and high efficiency in the LST of complex curved surface is challenging, due to continuously varied geometries of laser-matter incidence. In the present work, we propose a novel manufacturing system of 7-axis on-the-fly LST for complex curved surface, based on the integrated synchronization of 5-axis linkage motion platform with 2-axis galvanometer. Specifically, the algorithm for decomposing spatial texture trajectory on curved surface into low-frequency and high-frequency parts is established, based on which the kinematic model of synchronized 7-axis system is developed to derive the motion of each axis in both 5-axis linkage motion platform and 2-axis galvanometer simultaneously. Subsequently, the synchronized 7-axis LST system is experimentally realized, including the setup of mechanical stages integrated with optical path, the configuration of numerical control unit, and the development of processing software. Finally, case study of 7-axis on-the-fly LST of freeform aluminum surface is performed, and the advantages in terms of processing efficiency and texturing accuracy over 5-axis linkage LST are demonstrated. The correlation of reduced following errors between mechanical stages with the promoted performance of curved surface texturing by the 7-axis on-the-fly LST is further analyzed. Current work provides a feasible solution for establishing the manufacturing system for high performance LST of complex curved surface.

Smart contracts on Ethereum can be used to encode business logic and have been applied to many different areas, such as token exchanges and games. Unlike general programs, the computations of contracts on Ethereum are restricted by the gas limit. If a transaction runs out of the gas limit before an execution finishes, the Ethereum virtual machine throws an out-of-gas exception, and the entire transaction fails, which reverts to the state before the transaction started, although the transaction fee is still deducted. It is therefore, essential to conduct a gas estimation before sending a transaction. Existing studies have mostly failed in estimating the gas for a loop function because the number of iterations of the loops cannot be statically determined. However, we found that a quarter of all contracts have loop functions, and the gas cost for the loops is higher than for the other functions. Therefore, it is necessary to apply a gas estimation for the loop functions. In this study, we propose a gas estimation approach based on the transaction trace to dynamically estimate the gas for the loop functions. Our belief is that we can learn the relationship between the historical transaction traces and their gas costs to estimate the gas for new transactions. We considered three different abstractions of the original transaction trace and fed them to different machine learning models. The results show that our approach is effective in gas estimation and that a random forest can achieve the most accurate estimation.

While laser surface texturing is promising for the fabrication of planar surface microstructures, the continuously patterning with micrometer accuracy of non-planar surface on miniature parts with large curvature by laser ablation is challenging. In the present work, we demonstrate the feasibility of applying the proposed multi-axis laser milling in continuous patterning of 25 mm diameter spherical stainless steel with high uniformity and precision, based on a strategy of simultaneously adjusting the position and the posture of laser-surface interaction point for enabling the constant coincidence of laser beam with ablated surface normal. Specifically, a miniaturized five-axis platform for controlling workpiece motion with high degree-of-freedom is designed and integrated with a fixed nanosecond pulsed laser beam operating at 1064 nm. The precise path of laser-surface interaction point is derived based on the projection and transformation of pre-determined planar pattern on spherical surface. Meanwhile, a virtual prototype of the multi-axis laser milling with embedded interpolation algorithm is established, which enables the generation of NC codes for subsequent laser milling experiments. Furthermore, the sampling of laser processing parameters particularly for spherical surface is carried out. Finally, complex patterns are continuously structured on the spherical surface by employing the proposed multi-axis laser milling method, and subsequent characterization demonstrates both long range uniformity and local high accuracy of the fabricated patterns. Current work provides a feasible method for the continuous laser surface texturing of non-planar surfaces for miniature parts with large curvature.

To develop an innovative aerostatic guideway without cable drag force that can be widely applied to ultra-precision machining and measurement technology, it is necessary to analyze the static performance of the aerostatic guideway. The structural properties of the cableless aerostatic guideway, i.e., the bearing capacity and internal pressure distribution, directly affect the accuracy of processing and measurement. In this work, the relevant flow equations of the cableless aerostatic guideway are established by considering the unbalanced micro-scale air film. Moreover, the finite difference method is used to solve the calculation of the global analysis of air film at different positions. In addition, this work compares and analyzes the pressure and fluid velocity vector distributions in balanced and unbalanced states and investigates the effect of varying the thicknesses of the air film on static characteristics such as bearing capacity and stiffness. By comparing the balanced and unbalanced states under the same conditions, the obtained results show that in the unbalanced situation, the bearing capacity is lower by 11.69 percent and the stiffness is slightly higher (by 16.67 percent). Furthermore, the related experiments verify the predicted dependence of the bearing capacity on the thickness of the air film, and further demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed structure of the cableless aerostatic guideway. This work provides a technical reference for the design of a cableless aerostatic guideway.

While curved surface microstructures have wide applications in optical components and devices, how to achieve high machining accuracy of the microstructures is crucial for their applications. In the present work, we fabricate sinusoidal modulation microstructures on a curved copper surface by ultra-precision diamond cutting, with the combination of a rotary B-axis and a fast tool servo system. Specifically, tool path planning, together with the consideration of a curved, sinusoidal surface meshing and tool tip arc segmentation compensation, is carried out. Preliminary cutting experiments are firstly carried out on a homemade four-axis ultra-precision lathe, which demonstrates the advantages of additionally applying the rotary B-axis in suppressing burr formations and over-cutting phenomenon over the sole utilization of the fast tool servo system. Subsequent experiments are carried out to evaluate the effects of feed rate and the number of sampling points on the machining accuracy of the microstructures under the combination of a rotary B-axis and a fast tool servo system. With the optimized machining parameters, sinusoidal modulation microstructures, which have a wavelength of 700.6 μm, a peak-to-valley of 18.7 μm, a surface roughness of 18.9 nm and a deviation of profile tolerance of 4.326 μm, are successfully fabricated on a curved copper surface with a face radius of 10 mm and a curvature radius of 500 mm.

In this paper, a novel positioner fixture with a high repeated positioning accuracy and a high stiffness is proposed and investigated. A high-precision end-toothed disc is used to achieve the high repeated positioning accuracy of the designed positioner fixture. The mathematical models of the cumulative error of the tooth pitch, the tooth alignment error and the error of the tooth profile half-angle of the end-toothed disc are analyzed. The allowable tolerance values of the cumulative error of the tooth pitch, the tooth alignment error and the error of the tooth profile half-angle of the end-toothed disc are given. According to the theoretical calculation results, a prototype positioner fixture is fabricated and its repeated positioning accuracy and stiffness are tested. The test results indicate that the stiffness of the proposed positioner fixture is 1050.5 N/μm, which is larger than the previous positioner fixtures of the same type. The repeated positioning accuracy of the proposed positioner fixture in the x, y and z directions are ±0.48 μm, ±0.45 μm and ±0.49 μm, respectively, which is significantly higher than the previous positioner fixtures.

With its standardized and unified interface, the quick-change fixture is an important part for maintaining high efficiency without compensation of precision in the metal-turning process because it can conveniently realize high-precision repeated clamping and multi-station conversion without complex positioning and adjustment steps. However, the existing quick-change fixture products and related research cannot fully meet the needs of repeatability and applicability raised from ultra-precision, single-point diamond turning with ultra-high accuracy and ultra-small depth of cut. In this paper, we develop a quick-change fixture for ultra-precision diamond turning, in which the end-toothed disc acts as the positioning element. Specifically, the main parameters of two key components of the end-toothed disc and slotted disc spring are calculated analytically to ensure the positioning accuracy of the designed fixture used in the rotation condition, which is further ensured by controlling the machining tolerance of the tooth profile of the end-toothed disc. Additionally, finite element simulations are performed to investigate the static and modal states of the quick-change fixture, which demonstrate a maximum deformation of about 0.9 μm and a minimum natural frequency of 5655.9 Hz for the designed fixture. Two high-precision sensors are used to detect the radial jump and end run-out values after repeated clamping actions, which are employed to verify the repetitive positioning accuracy of the fixture. Subsequent finite-element simulation of the clamping of small-diameter copper bar, as well as the diamond turning experiment, jointly demonstrate that the designed fixture can achieve a precision of 1 μm. Current work provides an effective quick-change fixture to reduce the deformation of a weak-stiffness workpiece caused by clamping deformation in ultra-precision diamond cutting.

The manufacturing of precise surface microstructures with low cost is needed for surface texturing-based surface engineering. In this paper, a device for the fabrication of surface microgroove texture on stainless steel based on ultrasonic impact peening (UIP) is proposed and investigated. First, the principle of applying the UIP into the fabrication of surface texture is analytically described. Then, the design of the UIP device, particularly the design of functional systems and mechanical structures, is carried out. Next, a UIP experimental device is built, and is further applied to fabricate microgroove textures on 316L stainless steel. The subsequent experimental characterization of microgroove morphology demonstrates the feasibility of the designed UIP device for the fabrication of stainless steel surface texture.

In this paper, a novel single-driven ultrasonic elliptical vibration cutting (SDUEVC) device with a succinct structure and a simple assembly is proposed and investigated. A tailored horn with a tilted-slot structure was employed in the designed SDUEVC device. Also, the elliptical trajectory formation mechanism of the designed SDUEVC device was described by using the theory of mechanical vibration. Furthermore, the finite element method (FEM) was used to optimize the tilted-slot structure parameters and there are four parameters selected as the optimization factors. The results indicated that the proposed SDUEVC device can generate larger vertical amplitude than previous SDUEVC devices, which provides an important and positive effect for the cutting performance of the proposed SDUEVC device. According to the optimized results, a prototype SDUEVC device was fabricated and its vibration characteristic was tested. When the excitation signal voltage was 500 Vp-p, the test results indicated that the amplitudes in the axial and vertical directions were 8.7 μm and 6.8 μm, respectively. Furthermore, an elliptical trajectory was generated at the cutting tool tip. Finally, the proposed SDUEVC device was used to fabricate microdimple patterns as the initial application to confirm the feasibility of the proposed SDUEVC device.
