Abstract

The aim of this research is to reveal and determine the sizes of plastically deformed areas in metallic non-magnetic materials with the eddy current method. The manuscript contains computational studies to assess the feasibility of using the eddy current method to determine the size of the plastically deformed areas in the metal. The authors developed a two-dimensional mathematical model of the interaction of the electromagnetic field with the control object. The model included poly-harmonic field excitation in a locally deformed plate, and the deformation was modeled in the form of plastically deformed areas under the indents obtained by the ball indentation. The developed model helped to establish the correlation dependencies and linked the informative parameters of the eddy current method with the size of the metal's plastically deformed zone. The authors obtained the calibration curve for copper, the values of which allowed to determine the factual sizes of the plastically deformed area.

Abstract

Wood is known as a sustainable material with several advantageous for various applications. One restrictive factor for wider use is the sensitivity of wood to weathering factors. The effects of coatings on Scots pine wood, after treatment and accelerated weathering and freeze - thaw cycles, were examined in this study. The studied coating materials were made from combinations of hydrated magnesium compounds with hydrated minerals and a combination of polymineral fire retardant with sulfonated graphene. The adhesion properties were measured by the tape method, and the results were calculated with the Python Programming Language. We found that each coating had an individual adhesion feature on wood and differing resistance to the stresses of weathering and freeze - thaw cycles. Weathering stress could be eliminated to a certain degree, but the influence of freeze - thaw cycles on the coating's adhesion was high, indicating the large effect of moisture on the coating. Abstract

The one-dimensional (1D) linear location technique has been considered as one of the methods for determining the position of acoustic emission (AE) sources in metallic objects. However, this approach does not take into account the heterogeneity of materials and that leads to poor accuracy of AE sources localization. To estimate the positioning error of the linear location technique which is typically used to determine the AE source location a new approach based on the combination of experimental and simulation methods is proposed. This approach for error estimation contains a finite element model construction of the AE signals localization. The model consists of transmitting and receiving transducers mounted on the test object, the frequency response of which selected close to the characteristics of acoustic emission transducers applied in the preliminary experiments. The application of the approach in current research showed that a reduced positioning error on a flat steel plate reaches 15%. The proposed technique can be used to optimize the number of preliminary tests required to calculate the reduced error of the 1D linear location technique applied for the AE sources localization during the inspection of the structure.
