First-principles computational studies under density functional theory (DFT) framework were used to investigate the structural stability, conductivity and voltage profile of LiFe1−nNnP1−mMmO4 (N, M = Si or S) electrode materials. It is found that the LiFeP7/8Si1/8O4 system has the most stable structure. After doping, the band gap values of the systems decrease gradually, and LiFe7/8S1/8PO4 system has a minimum band gap of 1.553 eV, attributed to the hybridization of the Fe-d and S-p orbital electrons. The LiFeP7/8S1/8O4 system demonstrates the characteristic of n-type semiconductor, and other doping systems have the feature of p-type semiconductor. Charge density difference maps show that the covalent property of Si–O bond is enhanced in the LiFeP7/8Si1/8O4 system. The average distance of Li and O atoms in the S doping systems increases from 0.21026 to 0.21486 and 0.21129 nm, respectively, indicating that doping broadens significantly the channel of Li ion de-intercalation in LiFe7/8S1/8PO4 and LiFeP7/8S1/8O4. Additionally, the results of lithium intercalation potential imply that the voltages of the doping systems fall into the range of 2.23–2.86 V.

To explore the clinicopathological features of a rare dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) with meningothelial-like whorls, we retrospectively analyzed 46 reported cases and 1 case that we encountered. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of the MDM2 amplification status of our case was also performed. Our case involved a 73-year-old male patient who had a mass in the upper part of his left arm for 10 years and was treated by surgical ablation of the tumor because of the mass' recent rapid enlargement. Microscopically, the tumor tissues showed coexistence of well-differentiated and dedifferentiated components, the latter of which included meningothelial-like whorls and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor-like structures. The dedifferentiated components diffusely expressed vimentin, MDM2, CDK4, p16, and smooth muscle actin. They were also focally positive for desmin but negative for S-100, CD117, CD34, ALK, EMA, SOX-10, p53, and β-catenin. FISH detection showed MDM2 amplification. In conclusion, subcutaneous DDLPS with meningothelial-like whorls and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor-like features is rare. This case broadens the histopathological lineage of DDLPS, and confirms DDLPS with myogenic differentiation. The use of the combination of MDM2, CDK4, p16, and FISH to detect MDM2 amplification is a reliable basis for the diagnosis of DDLPS with meningothelial-like whorls.

Although TC2N has proven to be an oncogene in lung cancer, its biological function and molecular mechanisms in other cancer still remains unclear. Here, we investigate in breast cancer that TC2N expression is sharply overexpressed in breast cancer specimens compared with normal breast specimens, and the low TC2N expression was associated with advanced stage, lymphatic metastasis, larger tumors and shorter survival time. Upregulation of TC2N significantly restrains breast cancer cell proliferation in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, TC2N blocks AKT signaling in a PI3K dependent and independent way through weakening the interaction between ALK and p55γ or inhibiting the binding of EBP1 and AKT. To sum up, these results unmask an ambivalent role of TC2N in cancer, providing a promising inhibitor for PI3K-AKT signaling.

This study aimed to investigate the situations of pornography use among male college students of China, to explore the addiction possibility for pornography use, and to study the associations between pornography use and reproductive hormone levels and semen quality. Five hundred sixty-eight participants met the inclusion criteria and finished all of the questionnaires and hormone level and semen parameter examinations. A majority of participants (except one) had pornography use experience, 94.2% participants started pornography use before college, and 95.9% participants reported they had masturbation experience when using pornography. Early contact to pornography, frequent pornography use, high amount of time spending on pornography use, and frequent masturbation during pornography use were correlated with addiction trends. Earlier pornography use was found to be associated with lower serum prolactin (PRL), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and progesterone (Prog), as well as lower sperm concentration and total sperm count. Higher frequency of pornography use was associated with lower serum estrogen (E2). In conclusion, pornography use was common among male college students in China. Early contact, high frequent use, and high frequency of masturbation during pornography use could lead to addiction trends and aberrant reproductive hormone levels and semen quality.

The protein containing the C2 domain has been well documented for its essential roles in endocytosis, cellular metabolism and cancer. Tac2-N (TC2N) is a tandem C2 domain-containing protein, but its function, including its role in tumorigenesis, remains unknown. Here, we first identified TC2N as a novel oncogene in lung cancer. TC2N was preferentially upregulated in lung cancer tissues compared with adjacent normal lung tissues. High TC2N expression was significantly associated with poor outcome of lung cancer patients. Knockdown of TC2N markedly induces cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest with repressing proliferation in vitro, and suppresses tumorigenicity in vivo, whereas overexpression of TC2N has the opposite effects both in vitro and in vivo. Using a combination of TCGA database and bioinformatics, we demonstrate that TC2N is involved in regulation of the p53 signaling pathway. Mechanistically, TC2N attenuates p53 signaling pathway through inhibiting Cdk5-induced phosphorylation of p53 via inducing Cdk5 degradation or disrupting the interaction between Cdk5 and p53. Moreover, the blockade of p53 attenuates the function of TC2N knockdown in the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis. In addition, downregulated TC2N is involved in the apoptosis of lung cancer cells induced by doxorubicin, leading to p53 pathway activation. Overall, these findings uncover a role for the p53 inactivator TC2N in regulating the proliferation and apoptosis of lung cancer cells. Our present study provides novel insights into the mechanism of tumorigenesis in lung cancer.

OBJECTIVE Behavioral and psychosocial factors have been associated with a decline of the quality of semen. However, the relationship of depression and physical activity (PA) with semen quality remains unclear. METHODS Data were obtained from 587 young male Chinese college students in June 2013. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing life-style factors, the Zung self-rated depression scale, and three items related to PA. They underwent a physical examination and provided a semen sample and a blood sample for reproductive hormones (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and prolactin). RESULTS Men with high depression scores (n = 63, 10.7%) had lower sperm concentration (M (SD) = 66.9 (74.5) versus 72.6 (56.9) [10/ml], p = .043) and total sperm count (M (SD) = 241.6 (299.7) versus 257.0 (204.0) [10], p = .024) than nondepressed men. Participants with low PA levels (n = 99, 16.9%) had lower total sperm count (M (SD) = 204.4 (153.7) versus 265.8 (225.8) [10/ml], p = .017) than participants with higher activity levels. After adjusting for potential confounders, depressed men had 18.90% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.14%-33.47%) lower sperm concentration and 21.84% (95% CI = 3.39%-36.90%) lower total sperm count than nondepressed men. Men with low PA levels had 23.03% (95% CI = 2.80%-46.89%) lower total sperm count than physically active participants. An interaction effect between depression and PA on sperm concentration was detected (p = .033). There were no significant associations of depression and PA with reproductive hormones (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS Depression and low levels of PA are associated with lower levels of semen quality, which may have implications for reproductive health.

Sertoli cells (SCs) provide physical and nutritional support for spermatogenesis. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a plasticizer that has male reproductive toxicity. The collapse of vimentin in DBP-exposed SCs is thought to induce the sloughing of spermatocytes from seminiferous tubules. In this study, we explored methods to rescue vimentin from collapse in DBP-exposed SCs. DBP not only induced the hyperphosphorylation of vimentin but also triggered endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and apoptosis in SCs. Treatment with BAPTA-AM, an antagonist of Ca2+, significantly decreased the level of phosphorylated vimentin, while LY294002, an inhibitor of Akt1, did not. ER stress and apoptosis remained at high levels, and the distribution of vimentin was not improved. ZnSO4 treatment did not decrease the level of phosphorylated vimentin. However, after treatment, ER stress and apoptosis were obviously inhibited, and the distribution of vimentin was reconverted. These results indicated that ZnSO4 could alleviate the collapse of vimentin by attenuating ER stress and apoptosis. This study suggested that an appropriate zinc supply might be a choice to alleviate DBP-induced adverse reproductive effects.

To study the associations between pubertal timing and semen quality and reproductive hormones, 680 volunteers were recruited from universities in Chongqing, China. Pubertal timing was obtained using a questionnaire. The main measurements were five routine semen parameters and six reproductive hormones. After adjusting for potential confounders, we found that early pubertal timing was associated with lower sperm concentration. An one-year increase in age of peak height velocity was associated with a 4.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.0 to 8.6) increase in sperm concentration. An one-year increase in age of first spermatorrhea was associated with a 6.4% increase in sperm concentration and a 2.9% decrease in semen volume (95% CI = 1.7 to 11.3, −5.5 to −0.3; respectively). Regarding reproductive hormones, an one-year increase in age of height spurt and peak height velocity was associated with a 6.5% and a 6.7% decrease in estrogen (95% CI = −9.8 to −3.0, −10.4 to −2.8; respectively). While an one-year increase in age of height spurt was associated with higher follicle-stimulating hormone (% change = 2.6, 95% CI = 0.2 to 4.7). This was the first report that has suggested that early pubertal timing is associated with lower sperm concentration. However, further study is still needed to validate this association and fully elucidate the mechanism behind it.

Studies have shown that the effects of ambient particulate matter (PM) may be related to particle's size. However, results on the relationships between different PM and reproductive health are controversial. To explore the impacts of various PM fractions on male reproductive health, a total of 796 eligible subjects recruited in 2013 baseline investigation. In addition, there were 656 (82.4%) and 568 (71.3%) subjects participated follow-up surveys in 2014 and 2015, respectively. We used multivariable regression analysis and mixed-effect model to investigate the associations between air pollutants PM10, PM10-2.5, and PM2.5 exposures and semen quality, sperm DNA fragmentation and serum reproductive hormones of subjects. In the preliminary regression analysis, PM10, PM10-2.5, and PM2.5 exposure all associated with sperm concentration, morphology, sperm high DNA stainability (HDS), serum estradiol and testosterone levels. However, in mixed models, we only found that PM10 exposure were negatively associated with sperm normal morphology (95% CI: -14.13, -24.47) but positively associated with sperm progressive motility (95% CI: 23.00, 8.49), and PM10-2.5 exposure was inversely associated with sperm concentration (95% CI: -9.06, -27.31) after multiplicity adjustment. Our results provide the evidence that air PM10 and PM10-2.5 exposures, not PM2.5, are risk factors of semen quality.

Background: Environment-Protection-Agency Reference Doses (EPA RfDs) for phthalate intakes are based on limited evidence, especially regarding low-dose male-reproductive toxicity. This study investigates the association between phthalate exposure and semen parameters and reproductive hormones in a general population with low phthalate exposure compared to the EPA RfDs. Methods: The MARHCS (Male-Reproductive-Health-in-Chongqing-College-Students) cohort recruited 796 male students, who experienced a relocation of campuses and shifting environmental exposure. Urine, semen and blood before and after the relocation was collected and investigated for: (1) the associations between 13 urinary phthalate metabolites and 11 semen/hormone outcomes (five semen parameters including semen volume, sperm concentration, total sperm number, progressive motility, normal morphology) and six serum reproductive hormones including estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, progesterone, testosterone; (2) re-analysis of the metabolite-outcome associations in the subjects with estimated phthalate intakes below the RfDs; (3) a change in phthalate metabolites and change in semen/hormone outcomes after the relocation; (4) the association between these changes. Results: (1) All but two semen/hormone outcomes were associated with at least one phthalate metabolite, e.g., each quartile monoethyl phthalate was associated with a 5.3%, 5.7% and 2.6% decrease of sperm concentration, total sperm number and progressive motility respectively. How to improve the diffusion coefficient of Lithium ions in active materials is very necessary, which is responsible for the electrochemical performance. In this present contribution, LiFe10/12Co1/12Mn1/12P11/12S1/12 O4(LF(CM)P(S)O) are designed and the stability, lithium ion diffusion rate, lithium intercalation potential, discharge curve, and electronic performances are systematically explored. The LF(CM)P(S)O shows the better stability with the formation energy of 2.01 eV. The lithium ion diffusion barrier of the system is reduced from 1.02 to 0.57 eV after doping, predicting that the lithium ion diffusion rate in LF(CM)P(S)O is 10 orders of magnitude faster than that of intrinsic system. The characteristic transition from p-type to n-type semiconductor is present due to the doping of S, and the doping of Mn and Co leads to the generation of impurity bands and the reduction of band gap from 3.78 to 0.737 eV. The effective mass of electrons in the doped system is 1.59m0, much greater than 1m0, which is conducive to the improvement of its conductivity. The charge density difference and electron localization function (ELF) demonstrates that the disappearance of electron enrichment and the decrease of the localization are responsible for the rapid migration of the lithium ion. The high operating voltage, charge-discharge platform of 4.7 V and the voltage difference contribute to the promotion of electrochemical performance, which open a window for the commercialization application of Li-ion battery.

Male reproductive damage in the general population comprises different disorders in various biomarkers, which could be respectively caused by a number of exposure factors. However, researchers considering the environmental/behavioral/psychological exposures together to evaluate their contribution to male reproductive damage are still lacking. The present study investigated the comprehensive association between 138 environmental/behavioral/psychological exposures and 32 male reproductive biomarkers in 796 young Chinese men using graph-guided fused lasso (GFLASSO) and hierarchical clustering methods. All biomarkers were found to be associated with various exposures. A combination of these exposures not only predicted the levels of single biomarkers in another test dataset, but also identified the comprehensive reproductive features by clustering the men into five subgroups with distinct damages representing disrupted spermatogenesis with abnormal sperm morphology, low sperm motility with DNA fragmentation, chromatin immaturity, aberrant endocrine, or DNA strand breakage. The findings can be used to suggest a novel way to identify the males with a high risk of reproductive damage and develop personalized preventive strategies.

The structure stability, electronic and optical properties of B and Al doped T-Carbon have been investigated by first-principles calculation under DFT framework. The calculated results show that the stability of B doping system is higher than that of the Al doping system and site 1 and 2 positions have equal contribution on the stability of systems. The mh*/me* value of T-carbon is 0.107 far away from 1, indicating that is conducive to the improvement of its conductivity. The doping of B and Al promotes the generation of impurity bands, and the disappearance of band gap, which is beneficial to the conductivity improvement of T-carbon. In Al doping systems, the absorption, reflection and loss peaks of light are reduced in the ultraviolet region, especially for the Al2 system, which exhibits the application foundation and opens a window in the fields of photoelectron and microelectronics devices.

Bisphenol A (2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, BPA) is ubiquitous in the environment, wildlife, and humans. Evidence from past studies suggests that BPA is associated with decreased semen quality. However, the molecular basis for the adverse effect of BPA on male reproductive toxicity remains unclear. We evaluated the effect of BPA on mouse spermatocytes GC-2 cells and adult mice, and we explored the potential mechanism of its action. The results showed that BPA inhibited cell proliferation and increased the apoptosis rate. The testes from BPA-treated mice showed fewer spermatogenic cells and sperm in the seminiferous tubules. In addition, BPA caused reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Previous study has verified that mitochondrion was the organelle affected by the BPA-triggered ROS accumulation. We found that BPA induced damage to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in addition to mitochondria, and most ER stress-related proteins were activated in cellular and animal models. Knocking down of the PERK/EIF2α/chop pathway, one of the ER stress pathways, partially recovered the BPA-induced cell apoptosis. In addition, an ROS scavenger attenuated the expression of the PERK/EIF2α/chop pathway-related proteins. Taken together, these data suggested that the ROS regulated PERK/EIF2α/chop pathway played a vital role in BPA-induced male reproductive toxicity.

Parkinson's disease is a common neurodegenerative disease in the elderly, and mitochondrial defects underlie the pathogenesis of PD. Impairment of mitochondrial homeostasis results in reactive oxygen species formation, which in turn can potentiate the accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria, forming a vicious cycle in the neuron. Mitochondrial fission/fusion and biogenesis play important roles in maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis. It has been reported that PGC-1α is a powerful transcription factor that is widely involved in the regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis, oxidative stress, and other processes. Therefore, we explored mitochondrial biogenesis, mitochondrial fission/fusion, and especially PGC-1α as the key point in the signaling mechanism of their interaction in rotenone-induced dopamine neurotoxicity. The results showed that mitochondrial number and mass were reduced significantly, accompanied by alterations in proteins known to regulate mitochondrial fission/fusion (MFN2, OPA1, Drp1, and Fis1) and mitochondrial biogenesis (PGC-1α and mtTFA). Further experiments proved that inhibition of mitochondrial fission or promotion of mitochondrial fusion has protective effects in rotenone-induced neurotoxicity and also promotes mitochondrial biogenesis. By establishing cell models of PGC-1α overexpression and reduced expression, we found that PGC-1α can regulate MFN2 and Drp1 protein expression and phosphorylation to influence mitochondrial fission/fusion. In summary, it can be concluded that PGC-1α-mediated cross talk between mitochondrial biogenesis and fission/fusion contributes to rotenone-induced dopaminergic neurodegeneration.

Epidemiological and experimental evidence for detrimental effects of cell phone use on semen quality is still equivocal. And that recruiting participants from infertility clinic not from general population may raise the possibility of a selection bias. To investigate effects of cell phone use on semen parameters in a general population,We screened and documented the cell phone use information of 794 young men from the Male Reproductive Health in Chongqing College students (MARHCS) cohort study in 2013, followed by 666 and 568 in 2014 and 2015, respectively. In the univariate regression analyses, we found that the daily duration of talking on the cell phone was significantly associated with decreased semen parameters, including sperm concentration [β coefficient = −6.32% per unit daily duration of talking on the cell phone (h); 95% confidence interval (CI), −11.94, −0.34] and total sperm count (−8.23; 95% CI, −14.38, −1.63) in 2013; semen volume (−8.37; 95% CI, −15.93, −0.13) and total sperm count (−16.59; 95% CI, −29.91, −0.73) in 2015]. Internet use via cellular networks was also associated with decreased sperm concentration and total sperm counts in 2013 and decreased semen volume in 2015. Multivariate analyses were used to adjust for the effects of potential confounders, and significant negative associations between internet use and semen parameters remained. Consistent but nonsignificant negative associations between talking on the cell phone and semen parameters persisted throughout the three study years, and the negative association was statistically significant in a mixed model that considered all three years of data on talking on the cell phone and semen quality. Our results showed that certain aspects of cell phone use may negatively affect sperm quality in men by decreasing the semen volume, sperm concentration, or sperm count, thus impairing male fertility. The research on electronic properties of graphene/β-Si3N4(0001) heterostructure are carried out by regulating the interlayer spacing employing DTF calculations. The calculated results show that all interfaces are bonded by van der Waals (vdW) force, the configuration of Nt1 atom relative to the center of C ring is more stable with the equilibrium interlayer distance D0 of 2.908 A and binding energy per C atom of −0.531 eV. The energy band structure is similar to the superposition of two parts of heterojunction and retains the shape of the Dirac cone with a direct band gap of 67 meV. Combined with differential density map and population analysis, it is found that 0.03 e spontaneously flow from the graphene layer to the β-Si3N4(0001) layer, results in the presence of a built-in electric field, which is conducive to the separation of electrons and holes. It is noteworthy that the band gap decreases obviously when the layer spacing gradually increases from 2.0 A to 3.2 A. The present results are beneficial for the designing of microelectronic devices containing vdWhs and open a window for the applications of graphene-ceramic heterojunctions.

An insight into electronic structure and optical feature of S-adsorbed 3C–SiC (111) surface is carried out employing first-principles calculation. It is found that the [Formula: see text] and B position systems with adsorption energies of 3.880 and 3.895, respectively, are relatively stable compared to the [Formula: see text] and C systems. Impurity energy levels are present near Fermi level in C and [Formula: see text] position adsorption systems and the band-gap decreases obviously in the two systems. A raindrop-like electron cloud of S atom can be observed in [Formula: see text] adsorption system and the order of the chemical bond strength in the adsorption system is [Formula: see text]. The B and [Formula: see text] adsorption systems have good light permeability in the visible and infrared regions, while the C and [Formula: see text] adsorption systems are relatively suitable as dielectric materials and have high service life when they as devices in the ultraviolet region.

Objectives. To study the associations between kisspeptin levels in seminal plasma and blood plasma and semen quality. Materials and Methods. We conducted a male reproductive health survey in June 2014. A total of 666 volunteers were recruited from colleges in Chongqing, China. All volunteers completed a questionnaire including information on domestic characteristics and some potential confounders. We tested the kisspeptin levels in both blood and seminal plasma. Total seminal kisspeptin was calculated as the concentration of kisspeptin in seminal plasma multiplied by semen volume. Semen samples were tested according to the 2010 World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidelines. Spearman correlation and multivariate linear regression were used to explore the association between kisspeptin concentrations in seminal plasma and blood plasma and semen quality. Potential confounders that were adjusted for included age, abstinence time, body mass index (BMI), grade, and smoking. Results. The median of kisspeptin levels in seminal plasma was 60,000 times higher than kisspeptin in blood plasma (28.0 × 106 pg/ml versus 448.9 pg/ml). Each interquartile range (IQR) of kisspeptin in seminal plasma was associated with a 4.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.6%–7.6%) increase in sperm concentration. Each IQR of total kisspeptin was associated with a 7.7% (95% CI: 4.4%–11.0%) increase in total sperm number and a 7.8% (95% CI: 4.0%–11.7%) increase in total motile sperm count. Kisspeptin levels were further classified into quartiles and Q1 was set as the reference level. Subjects in the high total kisspeptin group had 57.5% (95% CI: 33.2%–86.2%) higher total sperm number than the reference group. Conclusion. The positive association between kisspeptin levels in seminal plasma and semen quality supported an important role for the KISS1/GPR54 system in male reproductive health. Kisspeptin may be a potential marker of male reproductive health and an alternative strategy for treating infertility.

Dysfunctional sperm maturation is the primary reason for the poor sperm motility and morphology in infertile men. Spermatozoa from infertile men were fractioned on three-layer density gradient (80%, 60%, and 40%). Fraction 1 (F1) refers to the least mature stage having the lowest density, whereas the fraction 4 (F4) includes the most dense and morphologically mature motile spermatozoa. Fraction 2 (F2) and fraction 3 (F3) represent the intermediate stages. Proteins were extracted and separated by 1-dimensional gel. Bands were digested with trypsin and analyzed on a LTQ-Orbitrap Elite hybrid mass spectrometer system. Functional annotations of proteins were obtained using bioinformatics tools and pathway databases. A total of 1585 proteins were detected in the four fractions of spermatozoa. A dysregulated protein turnover and protein folding may lead to accumulation of defective proteins or proteins that otherwise would have been eliminated during the process of maturation, resulting in the impairment of sperm function. Aberrant chaperone expression may be a major contributing factor to the defective sperm function. Androgen receptor was predicted as a transcription regulator in one of the networks and the affected pathways were chaperone-mediated stress response, proteosomal pathway, and sperm function. The downregulation of key pathways and proteins which compromises the fertilizing potential of spermatozoa may provide insight into the mechanisms that lead to male infertility.

Studies have shown that the effects of ambient particulate matter (PM) may be related to particle's size. However, results on the relationships between different PM and reproductive health are controversial. To explore the impacts of various PM fractions on male reproductive health, a total of 796 eligible subjects recruited in 2013 baseline investigation. In addition, there were 656 (82.4%) and 568 (71.3%) subjects participated follow-up surveys in 2014 and 2015, respectively. The aim of the study was to examine the association between polymorphisms of DNA repair genes and chromosomal damage of 1,3-butadiene- (BD-) exposed workers. The study was conducted in 45 pairs of occupationally exposed workers in a BD product workshop and matched control workers in an administrative office and a circulatory water workshop in China. Newly developed biomarkers (micronuclei, MNi; nucleoplasmic bridges, NPBs; nuclear buds, NBUDs) in the cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus (CBMN) cytome assay were adopted to detect chromosomal damage. PCR and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) are adopted to analyze polymorphisms of DNA repair genes, such as X-ray repair cross-complementing Group 1 (XRCC1), O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), poly (adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerases (ADPRT), and apurinic/apyrimidinic endonucleases (APE1). The BD-exposed workers exhibited increased frequencies of MNi and NPBs when compared to subjects in the control group. The results also show that the BD-exposed workers carryingXRCC1diplotypesTCGA-CCGG(4.25±2.06‰) (FR=2.10, 95% CI: 1.03–4.28) andTCGG-TCGA(5.80±3.56‰) (FR=2.75, 95% CI: 0.76–2.65) had statistically higher NBUD frequencies than those who carried diplotypeTCGG-TCGG(1.89±1.27‰). Our study suggests that polymorphisms ofXRCC1gene may influence chromosomal damage in BD-exposed workers.

Nonobstructive azoospermia (NOA) patients present with high levels of serum FSH. At the protein level, the aetiology and pathways underlying different subtypes of NOA are unclear. The aim was to evaluate quantitatively differences in proteomic profiles of NOA patients presenting with normal serum FSH and normal testicular volume and high serum FSH and small testicular volume. The study comprised of 14 nonobstructive azoospermic men (N = 4; normal FSH and normal testicular volume and N = 10; high FSH and small testicular volume) and seven normozoospermic men. Proteomic analysis was done using LC-MS. GSTM3 and PGK2 were less abundant in the normal and high FSH group compared to controls. HSPA4L and HSPA4 were exclusively present in control group whereas HSP90AB1, HSPA1B, HSP90AA1 and HSPA2 were less abundant and exclusive to the normal and high FSH group. We have identified six heat-shock proteins that may have a role in the pathology of NOA. FSH and testicular volume by itself are not good markers of NOA. The inverse association of GSTM3 and PGK2 regulation with FSH levels along with 12 proteins exclusively in NOA groups suggests further evaluation of their predictive potential in a larger cohort of patients.
