Abstract This study aims to investigated the association between sedentary behavior (SB) and predicted 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk and determine whether the associations differ by how the behavior is accumulated, in US middle-aged and older adults. Cross-sectional data were derived from national health and nutrition examination survey (NHANES) 2003–2006. Seven-day wearing of accelerometer was used to assess SB pattern, exported as total SB, bouts of 1–9, 10–29, 30–59 and ≥ 60 min SB. Predicted 10-year ASCVD risk was calculated using validated pooled cohort equations. Linear regression was used to estimate adjusted coefficients. A total of 2327 participants were enrolled with mean age of 56.9 and mean predicted 10-year ASCVD risk of 10.7%. We observed significant associations of total SB and its longer accumulated patterns with higher 10-year predicted ASCVD risk, in a linear fashion and independent of a list of covariates. A 30 min increment per day of total SB, bouts in 10–29, bouts in 30–59 and bouts in ≥ 60 min were associated with 0.14, 0.14, 0.23 and 0.12% higher multivariable-adjusted 10-year predicted ASCVD risk. There are significant associations of total SB as well as its longer accumulated patterns with higher 10-year predicted ASCVD risk, independent of a list of covariates and in a linear fashion. The result indicates that reducing total sedentary time and interrupting long duration of prolonged SB, could be meaningful to for public guideline to lessen the personal and public health burden of cardiovascular health.

BackgroundLevetiracetam (LEV), an antiepileptic drug, has been effective in adult migraine prevention but lacks extensive research in children. This study evaluates LEV’s efficacy and safety for pediatric migraine prophylaxis.MethodsWe reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs in major databases through 8 January 2024, focusing on four efficacy endpoints and adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Data synthesis involved pooled relative risks or odds ratios for dichotomous outcomes and mean differences for continuous outcomes, using fixed- or random-effects models as appropriate.ResultsEight studies with 190 participants showed that after taking LEV, the mean headache frequency decreased 5.19 per month (MD: −5.19, 95% CI: −7.11 to −3.27, p < 0.00001) and improved headache-free rates to 28% (95% CI: 0.17–0.41). More than 83% experienced a >50% reduction in monthly headache frequency. The migraine disability score decreased by 33.51 points (MD: −33.51, 95% CI: −38.46 to −28.55, p < 0.00001). ADR incidence did not significantly differ between LEV and control groups (RR: 1.06, 95% CI: 0.39 to 2.85, p = 0.91), with an overall ADR rate of 18% (95% CI: 0.13–0.24). The most common ADR was irritability (12%), leading to treatment discontinuation in 13% of cases (95% CI: 0.05–0.30).ConclusionLEV has shown good efficacy in preventing pediatric migraines. Abstract Gut microbiota and their metabolic products might play important roles in regulating the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purpose of this study was to characterize gut microbiota and serum amino acid metabolome profiles in children with ASD. A non-randomized controlled study was carried out to analyze the alterations in the intestinal microbiota and their metabolites in patients with ASD (n = 30) compared with neurotypical controls (NC) (n = 30) by metagenomic sequencing to define the gut microbiota community and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analysis to characterize the metabolite profiles. Compared with children in the NC group, those in the ASD group showed lower richness, higher evenness, and an altered microbial community structure. At the class level, Deinococci and Holophagae were significantly lower in children with ASD compared with TD. At the phylum level, Deinococcus-Thermus was significantly lower in children with ASD compared with TD. In addition, the functional properties (such as galactose metabolism) displayed significant differences between the ASD and NC groups. In the context of the continuous increase in global grain production, accompanied by a large amount of investment in various pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other chemical pesticides. It has caused inevitable environmental problems and food safety problems. Current research suggests that the use of cyclodextrins and their derivatives to protect pesticides can significantly reduce the number of agrochemicals that pollute the environment. Using the cavity properties of cyclodextrins, we can refer to the similar way in which drug molecules make cyclodextrins and cyclodextrin polymers to form inclusion compounds. Overall, β-cyclodextrin and its derivatives are used as a new pesticide excipient to improve the stability of pesticides, prevent their oxidation and decomposition, improve the solubility and bioavailability of pesticides, reduce the toxic side effects of drugs, and mask the odour of drugs. In this review, we focus on summarising the recent research progress of β-cyclodextrins and their derivatives in pesticides and other fields, and provide a systematic classification of β-cyclodextrin polymers, as well as new synthesis methods and techniques in various applications. Finally, the future development of cyclodextrin-like polymers is foreseen, and issues arising from the research are discussed and addressed in depth.

For achieving the better modifying effect of polyurethane on asphalt pavement materials, the PUA powder modifier was prepared with fine grinding at the glass transition temperature, and polyurethane-modified asphalt (PUA-MA) with different dosages of modifier was prepared. The impact of the PUA on the physical properties of asphalt binder was studied. The modifying mechanism of PUA on asphalt was explored by investigating the thermal performance and chemical composition of asphalt (thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry test, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). The micrograph of the interactive interface was characterized by scanning an electron microscope. Furthermore, the rheological properties of PUA-MA were also investigated and analyzed. The results indicated that the PUA had a dense structure with few pores on the surface. After mixing with asphalt, it altered the asphalt’s internal structure via physical fusion and chemical reaction (carbamate formation). PUA improved the thermal stability of asphalt, enhanced the asphalt’s thermal decomposition temperature, and further reduced the thermal mass loss while decreasing the glass transition temperature. The addition and dosage increase in the PUA modifier significantly improved the softening point, viscosity, complex shear modulus, and rutting factor of asphalt. Also, the PUA could improve the elastic recovery ability of asphalt and enhance the rutting resistance of asphalt at high temperatures. However, the crack resistance at low temperatures was not effectively improved (ductility and penetration decreased). When the dosage was 6–9%, PUA-MA had the best high-temperature performance, but asphalt showed poor low-temperature performance at this dosage. This study provides a theoretical reference for popularizing and applying polyurethane as an asphalt modifier in road engineering.

Objective: This study aims to develop a combined population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model for aripiprazole (ARI) and its main active metabolite dehydroaripiprazole (DARI) in pediatric patients with tic disorders (TD), to investigate the inter-individual variability caused by physiological and genetic factors in pharmacokinetics of ARI and optimize the dosing regimens for pediatric patients.Methods: A prospective PPK research was performed in Chinese children with TD. Totally 84 patients aged 4.83–17.33 years were obtained for the pharmacokinetic analysis. 27 CYP2D6 and ABCB1 gene alleles were detected. Moreover, the clinical efficacy was evaluated according to reduction rate of Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) score at the 12th week comparing with the baseline. Monte Carlo simulations were used to evaluate and optimize dosing regimens.Results: The PPK model was established to predict the concentrations of ARI and DARI. Body weight and CYP2D6 genotype were the significant covariates affecting the clearance of ARI. The DARI/ARI metabolic ratios (MRs) of AUC24h, Cmin and Cmax at the steady state of results were ultra-rapid metabolizers (UMs) > normal metabolizers (NMs) > intermediated metabolizers (IMs). MRs could be used to distinguish UMs or IMs from other patients. The best predictor of clinical efficacy for TD was the trough concentration of ARI and the cut-off point was 101.636 ng/ml.Conclusion: The pharmacokinetics of ARI and DARI in pediatric TD were significantly influenced by body weight and CYP2D6 genotype. Individualized dosing regimens were recommended for pediatric patients with TD to ensure clinical efficacy.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of physical exercise on neck and shoulder muscle strength and pain in military pilots.Method: Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were searched studies published up to April 1, 2022. Studies that met the screening criteria were included in the final meta-analysis. We calculated neck and shoulder maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs), prevalence of pain, and pain intensity. Heterogeneity was explored by subgroup and sensitivity analyses.Result: A total of 15 studies with 907 participants were included. In the exercise group, muscle strength was significantly increased in four directions of neck motion: flexion (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.45; 95% CI, 0.08–0.82), extension (SMD = 0.63; 95% CI, 0.27–1.00), right lateral flexion (Rtflx) (SMD = 0.53; 95% CI, 0.12–0.94), and left lateral flexion (Ltflx) (SMD = 0.50; 95% CI, 0.09–0.91). Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) have high genetic heterogeneity, and DEE due to the potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily C member 2 (KCNC2) variant remains poorly understood, given the scarcity of related case studies. We report on two unrelated Chinese patients, an 11-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl, diagnosed with global developmental delay (GDD), intellectual disability (ID), and focal impaired awareness seizure characterized by generalized spike and wave complexes on electroencephalogram (EEG) in the absence of significant brain lesions. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) and electrophysiological analysis were performed to detect genetic variants and evaluate functional changes of the mutant KCNC2, respectively. Importantly, we identified a novel gain-of-function KCNC2 variant, R405G, in both patients. Previously reported variants, V471L, R351K, T437A, and T437N, and novel R405G were found in multiple unrelated patients with DEE, showing consistent genotype–phenotype associations. These findings emphasize that the KCNC2 gene is causative for DEE and facilitates treatment and prognosis in patients with DEE due to KCNC2 mutations.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is profoundly affecting lives around the globe. Previous studies on COVID-19 mainly focused on epidemiological, clinical, and radiological features of patients with confirmed infection. Little attention has been paid to the follow-up of recovered patients. As a vulnerable population to adverse events, the health status of the COVID-19 recovered pediatric patients is of great concern. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of behavioral problems among pediatric patients recovered from the COVID-19 in Wuhan, China. Methods: A total of 122 children who were suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases and hospitalized for treatment were enrolled in the study between April 2020 and May 2020 in Wuhan, China. We collected related information about hospitalization and discharge of the children and emotional symptoms of their parents through electronic medical records and questionnaire. The behavioral problems of children were examined by applying the parent-reported the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Results: The participant children were discharged from hospital after about two months. Among them, 76 (62%) were boys, and the mean age was 6.71 years old. The highest prevalence of behavioral problems among pediatric children with COVID-19 was for prosocial behavior (15%), followed by total difficulties (13%), emotional symptoms (11%), hyperactivity (10%), conduct problems (9%), and peer problems (1%). With regarding to their parents, 26% reported having symptoms of anxiety and 23% as having symptoms of depression. The scores of SDQ were higher in those children whose parents have emotional problems compared to parents without. Conclusion: Long-term follow up studies on the psychological and behavioral problems of COVID-19 recovered children and their parents are warranted.

The use of flexible, self-healing conductive hydrogels as a type of typical electronic skin with the function of transmitting sensory signals has attracted wide attention in the field of biomaterials. In this study, composite hydrogels based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), gelatin (GEL), oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), graphene oxide (GO), and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were successfully prepared. The hydrogen and imine bonding of the composite hydrogels gives them excellent self-healing properties. Their self-healing properties restore 68% of their breaking strength and over 95% of their electrical conductivity. The addition of GO and SWNTs enables the PGO-GS hydrogels to achieve a compressive modulus and conductivity of 42.2 kPa and 29.6 mS/m, which is 8.2 times and 1.5 times that of pure PGO, respectively. Furthermore, the PGO-GS hydrogels can produce profound feedback signals in response to deformation caused by external forces and human movements such as finger flexion and speech. In addition, the PGO-GS hydrogels exhibit superior biocompatibility compared to PGO. All of these results indicate that the PGO-GS hydrogels have great potential with respect to future applications in the field of electronic skin.

In that work, we have described the synthesis of novel Cu NPs decorated polyethylene glycol (PEG2000) coated magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4/PEG2000/Cu NPs) in an eco-friendly pathway applying Green Tea extract as reducing/stabilizing agent. The morphological and physicochemical features of the prepared nanocomposite were determined using several advanced techniques like ICP-OES, FE-SEM, EDX, atomic mapping, TEM, VSM, and XRD studies. In the antioxidant test, the IC50 of Fe3O4/PEG2000/Cu nanocomposite and BHT against DPPH free radicals were 198 and 85 µg/mL, respectively. In the cellular and molecular part of the recent study, the treated cells with Fe3O4/PEG2000/Cu nanocomposite were assessed by MTT assay for 48 h about the cytotoxicity and anti-human gastric cancer properties on normal (HUVEC) and gastric cancer cell lines i.e. NCI-N87 and MKN45. The IC50 of Fe3O4/PEG2000/Cu nanocomposite were 316 and 131 µg/mL against NCI-N87 and MKN45 cell lines, respectively. The viability of malignant gastric cell line reduced dose-dependently in the presence of Fe3O4/PEG2000/Cu nanocomposite. It seems that the anti-human gastric cancer effect of recent nanoparticles is due to their antioxidant effects.

Abstract Background and Aims Both Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth disease type 2D (CMT2D) and distal spinal muscular atrophy type V (dSMA‐V) are GARS1 disease phenotypes involving axonal peripheral neuropathy. Patients often develop clinical symptoms in their teens. Herein, we reported a Chinese family with infantile‐onset CMT2D/dSMA‐V. Methods Clinical evaluation and laboratory examination were performed in our proband, the older sister from this family, and trio exome sequencing (ES) was conducted on the proband and her parents, followed by Sanger sequencing. Results A novel GARS1 mutation (c.997G>C, p.E333Q; NM_002047) was identified in this patient and her younger sister but not in her parents; thus, it is presumed that this mutation is inherited from a germline mosaic parent. The younger sister began to exhibit weakness of her hands and feet at the age of 1 year old. Conclusion This is the first report of infantile CMT2D/dSMA‐V in China. Our study increases the number of infantile‐onset cases, as well as reported pathogenic variants in the GARS1 gene, and highlights the important role of exome sequencing in the clinical diagnosis of disease and enabling subsequent prenatal diagnosis. Our study reminds us to consider the possibility of parent germline mosaicism in the subsequent prenatal genetic diagnosis when identifying a de novo variant.

Abstract Background Short-chain enoyl-CoA hydratase deficiency (ECHS1D), also known as ECHS1 deficiency, is a rare inborn metabolic disorder with clinical presentations characterized by Leigh syndrome (LS). Thirty-four different pathogenic mutations have been identified from over 40 patients to date. Case presentation Here, we report five Chinese patients with clinical syndromes typified as LS. Despite different initial symptoms, all patients presented developmental regression, dystonia, common radiological features such as symmetrical bilateral brain abnormalities, and similar metabolic results such as elevated plasma lactate and 2,3-dihydroxy-2-methylbutyrate. Utilizing whole-exome sequencing (WES), we identified eight distinct variants in ECHS1, with six novel variants, and the remaining two variants have been previously reported. Interestingly, one of the six novel variants, c.463G > A (p.Gly155Ser), was detected in three patients from unrelated families, suggesting a potential founder effect already described for a few mutations in LS. Incorporating both genetic analysis and medical results, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and biochemical testing, our study enriched the mutation spectrum of the ECHS1 gene and confirmed the phenotypic presentations of LS. Conclusions The severity of ECHS1 deficiency seems to vary. It was affected by both genetics and external environmental factors that lead to increased metabolism. Our study enriched the mutation spectrum of the ECHS1 gene, confirmed the phenotypic presentations, and highlighted the importance of the valine catabolic pathway in Leigh syndrome. Further studies are required to examine the potential founder mutation c.463G > A (p.Gly155Ser) and the role of ECHS1 in relevant pathways.

Abstract Background Short-chain enoyl-CoA hydratase (ECHS1) is a multifunctional mitochondrial matrix enzyme involved in the second step of mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation. Mitochondrial diseases resulting from ECHS1 mutations are often characterised by encephalopathy, deafness, epilepsy, optic atrophy, cardiomyopathy, dystonia, and lactic acidosis. In this study, we report two novel heterogeneous variants, c.414 + 5G > A (in intron 3) and c.310C > G (in CDS), of ECHS1 in an infant with mitochondrial encephalopathy. Case presentation The two novel variants, c.414 + 5G > A (Chr10:135183403) in intron 3 and c.310C > G (Chr10:135183512) in CDS, were identified by next generation sequencing (NGS). A minigene assay was used to analyse the function of the c.414 + 5G > A variant. ECHS1 enzyme activity was measured by spectrophotometry in the patient-derived myoblasts. The 2-year old patient presented with mitochondrial encephalopathy since birth. Clinical features were encephalopathy, epilepsy, and hindered psychomotor and language development. Serum lactate and blood ammonia levels were elevated, and brain magnetic resonance imaging showed abnormal signals in the bilateral frontal, parietal, and occipital cortices and brainstem and basal ganglia. We found two novel heterogeneous variants in ECHS1 in this patient. Minigene assay revealed the c.414 + 5G > A variant as the cause of intronic cryptic splice site activation and 39 bp deletion in mature mRNA. In silico analysis predicted that c.310C > G might change glutamine (Q) to glutamic acid (E) in the 104th amino acid sequence (p.Q104E). To investigate the impact of these two variants on protein function, we constructed a 3D model of human ECHS1 and showed that the variants might alter the highly conserved region in close proximity to the active site, which might hinder, or even halt, enzymatic activity. The experimental assay showed that ECHS1 enzyme activity in the patient-derived myoblasts decreased compared to that in control. Conclusions Our findings are the first to report a mitochondrial encephalopathy infant carrying two novel ECHS1 variants, c.414 + 5G > A and c.310C > G, which might be deleterious variants, function as pathogenicity markers for mitochondrial encephalopathy, and facilitate disease diagnosis.

Introduction: To date, the mental health consequences of children hospitalized with COVID-19 remain unclear. We aimed to assess mental health status in children in the context of COVID-19, with a focus on discharged children.Methods: We recruited discharged children who recovered from COVID-19 and healthy controls between July and September 2020 in Wuhan Children's Hospital. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and sleep problems were assessed in these children using questionnaires. Univariable and multivariable logistic and linear regressions were conducted to identify risk factors.Results: Totally, there were 152 children (61 discharged children and 91 healthy controls) aged 7–18 years old in our study. An increasing trend in the prevalence of PTSD, anxiety, and depression was observed in the discharged children compared with healthy controls (PTSD: 8.20 vs. 2.20%, anxiety: 22.95 vs. 13.19%; depression: 47.54 vs. 32.97%). Discharged children tended to report more depressive symptoms (β = 0.39) and less sleep problems (β = −0.37). Discharged children who lived in nuclear families and had longer hospital stays were more likely to report depression [odds ratio (OR) = 3.68 and 1.14, respectively]. Anxiety symptoms and the severity of sleep problems of discharged children were positively associated with caregivers' depression and PTSD symptoms (OR = 21.88 and 31.09, respectively).Conclusion: In conclusion, PTSD, anxiety, and depression symptoms were common among recovered children 4 months after COVID-19 hospitalization. Children from nuclear family and those had longer hospital stays need special attention. In addition, parental mental health had a significant impact on their children's mental resilience and recovery.

(1) Objective: To explore Chinese residents’ willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccine booster shots and identify predictors of the level of willingness based on the health belief model (HBM). (2) Methods: The snowball sampling method was used to distribute online questionnaires. A chi-square test was used to analyze the relationship between different variables. The causal relationship between HBM-related factors and booster vaccination intentions was explored by Structural equation modeling (SEM). (3) Results: A total of 898 complete responses were included; 64.3% had already received the booster injection. Most respondents intended to vaccinate themselves, while 16.1% were hesitant. Nearly half of the respondents chose to take the booster injection to support China’s vaccination policy. Using the SEM, perceived susceptibility and perceived barriers were found to have a negative effect on booster vaccination intentions, whereas perceived benefit and cues to action positively affected booster vaccination intentions in the HBM. (4) Conclusions: Factors included in this study have different effects on the willingness to take the COVID-19 booster injections. Sociodemographic characteristics and characteristics of participants’ COVID-19 vaccination have a significant effect on the willingness to receive vaccine booster shots. The HBM constructs can serve as good predictors of the acceptance of vaccine booster shots with the exception of perceived severity, which may benefit health officials in terms of conducting targeted strategies in vaccine programs.

Background: Epileptic encephalopathies (EEs) are a pediatric entity with highly phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity. Both single nucleotide variants (SNVs)/Indels and copy number variations (CNVs) could be the causes. Whole exome sequencing (WES) is widely applied to detect SNVs/Indels, but the bioinformatics approach for detecting CNVs is still limited and weak. In the current study, the possibility of profiling both disease-causing SNVs/Indels and CNVs in a single test based on WES in EEs was evaluated.Methods: The infants diagnosed with EEs were enrolled from a single pediatric epilepsy center between January 2018 and February 2020. Demographic and clinical data were collected. In WES data, the pathogenic SNVs were identified through an in-house pipeline, and pathogenic CNVs were identified by CNVkit. The diagnostic rate was evaluated, and the molecular findings were characterized.Results: A total of 73 infants were included; 36 (49.32%) of them were males. The median age was 7 months. Thirty-two (43.84%) infants had been diagnosed with epilepsy syndrome. The most common type of syndrome was West syndrome (22/73, 30.1%), followed by Dravet syndrome (20/77, 27.4%). Fifty-four (73.97%) had intellectual development delay. The genetic cause of EEs, pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants, were successfully discovered in 46.6% (34/73) of the infants, and 29 (39.7%) infants carried SNVs/Indels, while 5 (6.8%) carried CNVs. The majority of the disease-causing variants were inherited in de novo pattern (25, 71.4%). In addition to showing that the variants in the ion channel encoding genes accounted for the main etiology, we discovered and confirmed two new disease-causing genes, CACNA1E and WDR26. Five discovered CNVs were deletions of 2q24.3, 1p36, 15q11-q13, 16p11.2, and 17p13.3, and all were confirmed by array comparative genomic hybridization.Conclusion: The application of both SNVs/Indels and CNVs detection in a single test based on WES yielded a high diagnosis rate in EEs. WES may serve as a first-tier test with cost-effective benefit in EEs.

Ever since SARS-CoV-2 began infecting people by the end of 2019, of whom some developed severe pneumonia (about 5%), which could be fatal (case fatality ~3.5%), the extent and speed of the COVID-19 outbreak has been phenomenal. Within 2.5 months (by March 18, 2020) over 191,127 COVID-19 patients have been identified in 161 countries. By then, over 700 pediatric patients were confirmed to have COVID-19 in China, with only about 58 diagnosed elsewhere. By now, there are thousands of children and adolescents infected. Chinese pediatricians would like to share their experience on how these patients were managed in China and the key recommendations that had guided them in meeting the evolving challenges. A group of experts were summoned by the Chinese Pediatric Society and Editorial Board of Chinese Journal of Pediatrics to extract informative data from a survey on confirmed COVID-19 pediatric patients in China. Consensus on diagnosis, management, and prevention of pediatric COVID-19 were drawn up based on the analysis of such data plus insights gained from the past SARS and MERS coronavirus outbreaks. Relevant cumulating experiences from physicians managing adult patients, expedited reports on clinical and scientific COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 data, and the National Health Committee guidelines on COVID-19 management were integrated into this proposal.

Objective: To investigate the uptake and vaccination willingness of the COVID-19 vaccine among Chinese residents and analyze the difference and factors that impact vaccination. Methods: The snowball sampling method was used to distribute online questionnaires. Relevant sociodemographic data along with the circumstances of COVID-19 vaccination were collected from the respondents. The χ2 test, independent samples t test and binary logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: Among 786 respondents, 84.22% had been vaccinated. Over 80% of the vaccinated population have completed all the injections because of supporting the national vaccination policies of China, while the unvaccinated population (23.91%) is mainly due to personal health status. Meanwhile, statistical analysis revealed that the main predictors of not being vaccinated were younger age (3 to 18 years old), personal health status, and lower vaccinated proportion of family members and close friends (p < 0.05). Conclusions: There was a high level of uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine in China, and people who have not been vaccinated generally had a low willingness to vaccinate in the future. Based on our results, it suggested the next work to expand the coverage of the COVID-19 vaccination should be concentrated on targeted publicity and education for people who have not been vaccinated.

Functional pavement material with an exhaust-purifying performance has gradually become of greater interest to researchers in recent years. For improving the purifying effect of functional micro surfacing, two types of raw ore powders with exhaust-purifying potentials were selected as novel functional modifiers. Firstly, the road performance of purifying micro surfacing was evaluated according to the ASTM and ISSA standards. Then, the dispersion state of modifying agents in emulsified asphalt evaporation residue was analyzed and discussed using SEM and FTIR. Finally, the purifying effect of micro surfacing on exhausts was examined in a laboratory to investigate the impact of various experimental conditions on the purifying performance. Meanwhile, the purifying performance was also monitored in a field test. The results showed that the road performance of purifying micro surfacing could fulfill the requirements of relevant technical standards. Pyrite had better dispersion property than specularite and titanium dioxide inside asphalt. The purifying micro surfacing could achieve a better purifying effect on NOx and COx than traditional micro surfacing with TiO2. These environmentally friendly pavement materials could provide new solutions for the reduction of polluting emissions in automobile exhausts.

Background: Benign Childhood Epilepsy with Centro-temporal Spikes (BECTS) is the most common form of idiopathic epilepsy in children, accounting for up to 23% of pediatric epilepsy. The pathogenesis of BECTS is unknown, but it is thought that genetic factors play a role in susceptibility to the disease. Methods: To investigate the role of common genetic variants in BECTS pathogenesis, a 2-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed in 1,800 Chinese Han BECTS patients, and 7,090 healthy controls. Genetic findings were used in a Mendelian Randomization study in the UK Biobank dataset to investigate the potential role of smoking in BECTS. Findings: Definitive evidence of a role for common-variant heritability was demonstrated, with heritability of BECTS of >10% observed even with conservative disease prevalence assumptions. Background: The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is ongoing globally. Limited data are available for children with SARS-CoV-2 infection.Methods: A retrospective case study was conducted in one designated hospital for children with SARS-CoV-2 infection in Wuhan.Results: Out of the 74 children with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, the median age was 5.8 years, with no notable variation based on gender. All of the children had had direct exposure to at least one family member with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. The most common symptoms were cough in 41 (55.4%) and fever in 38 (51.4%). Typical CT patterns of viral pneumonia were exhibited in 40 (54.1%) children, including ground-glass opacity and interstitial abnormalities. However, 17 (23.0%) children were classified as asymptomatic carriers, with neither symptoms nor radiological findings. Also, 68 (91.9%) children recovered fully and showed negative results on RT-PCR assay by nasopharyngeal swabs during our observation period. In contrast to the negative result for nasopharyngeal swab, 34% of the anal swabs showed a continued positive result. The mean hospitalization days of the children discharged after full recovery was 10.0 days.Conclusion: Within family clusters that had SARS-CoV-2 infection, children had mild or even asymptomatic illness. Although CT is highly sensitive, it should be avoided in follow-up of the disease in consideration of the radiological hazards and limited clinical benefits for mild illness in children. Furthermore, it is advocated that both nasopharyngeal and anal swabs should be confirmed negative for viral load prior to declaring full recovery so as to avoid oral-fecal transmission. Asymptomatic children with family clusters are potentially a little-known source of COVID-19. This therefore warrants an urgent reassessment of the transmission dynamics of the current outbreak.

Conically corrugated tube is a new type of high-efficiency heat exchange tube. In this paper, the mechanical and heat transfer properties of conically corrugated tubes formed by the cold rolling of smooth tubes are studied through experimental measurement and numerical simulation to lay the foundations for applying the tubes in heat exchangers. The results show that while conically corrugated tube has a lower axial elastic stiffness compared with smooth tube, conically corrugated tube has a higher yield strength and ultimate strength. Unlike smooth tubes, conically corrugated tubes develop three-dimensional stresses when an axial tensile load is applied to them. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient of conically corrugated tube is 15%, 17%, and 115% higher than that of spiral grooved tube, convergent divergent tube, and smooth tube, respectively. Finally, the correlation equations of the axial stress concentration factor, stiffness equivalent coefficient, Nusselt number, and flow resistance coefficient of conically corrugated tubes are obtained for engineering application.

The treatment of polluted water and sediment often costs too much and has little benefit. In this study, we proposed a novel design using dredged sediment, shrub willow (Salix spp.) and recirculating hand pumps for the restoration of polluted river water in Changchun city, China. Sediment was filled as a matrix for plant growth, shrub willow was transplanted for the absorption of nutrients, and ten hand-pumped water wells were built for recycling the polluted water. During the 5-month experimental period, the shrub willow growth and nutrient contents, sediment nutrient concentration and water quality were measured. The results showed that this pond system could effectively decrease the sediment pollutant levels, and its removal efficiencies of organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) could respectively reach as high as 11%, 10% and 26%. The dissolved oxygen (DO) content increased by more than 90% in August, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) content decreased by 44.93% and 19.82%, respectively. This means that the treatment pond could efficiently work toward the purification of polluted river water. The benefits and feasibility of this system application were also analyzed, and we found that it could be widely used for the treatment of polluted water and sediment in urban areas.

Objective: This study aims to develop a combined population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model for aripiprazole (ARI) and its main active metabolite dehydroaripiprazole (DARI) in pediatric patients with tic disorders (TD), to investigate the inter-individual variability caused by physiological and genetic factors in pharmacokinetics of ARI and optimize the dosing regimens for pediatric patients. Methods: A prospective PPK research was performed in Chinese children with TD. Totally 84 patients aged 4.83--17.33 years were obtained for the pharmacokinetic analysis. 27 CYP2D6 and ABCB1 gene alleles were detected. Moreover, the clinical efficacy was evaluated according to reduction rate of Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) score at the 12th week comparing with the baseline. Monte Carlo simulations were used to evaluate and optimize dosing regimens. Results: The PPK model was established to predict the concentrations of ARI and DARI. Body weight and CYP2D6 genotype were the significant covariates affecting the clearance of ARI. The DARI/ARI metabolic ratios (MRs) of AUC24h, Cmin and Cmax at the steady state of results were ultra-rapid metabolizers (UMs) > normal metabolizers (NMs) > intermediated metabolizers (IMs). MRs could be used to distinguish UMs or IMs from other patients. The best predictor of clinical efficacy for TD was the trough concentration of ARI and the cut-off point was 101.636 ng/ml. Conclusion: The pharmacokinetics of ARI and DARI in pediatric TD were significantly influenced by body weight and CYP2D6 genotype. Individualized dosing regimens were recommended for pediatric patients with TD to ensure clinical efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
