High-strength seismic-resistant rebar is essential in construction engineering, yet balancing its strength, plasticity, seismic resistance, and surface quality poses challenges. This research explores niobium-vanadium-nitrogen composite reinforced steel, examining how cooling bed temperature affects its microstructure, mechanical properties, and surface quality using advanced microscopy techniques. The research reveals that the steel's microstructure primarily consists of ferrite and pearlite. As cooling bed temperatures decrease, both the proportion and colony size of pearlite, along with ferrite size, show a declining trend. Specifically, reducing the cooling bed temperature from 1100 °C to 900 °C results in a decrease in yield strength, tensile strength, and tensile-to-yield strength ratio by 6 MPa, 27 MPa, and 0.03, respectively. Meanwhile, elongation after fracture, total elongation at maximum force, and strength-ductility balance improve by 3.8%, 1.5%, and 1.93%, respectively. At a cooling bed temperature of 1100 °C, significant blistering occurs on the steel surface. Significant blistering at 1100 °C vanishes at 1000 °C and 900 °C, with diminished silicon enrichment in the surface oxide scale. A cooling bed temperature of 1000 °C ± 20 °C is recommended for optimal performance. This study provides a temperature control strategy for the properties of high-strength seismic-resistant rebar rated at 650 MPa and above, contributing valuable insights to the field of advanced construction materials.

The high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) with spherical fuel elements contains complex pebble flow. The flow behavior of pebbles is influenced by various factors, such as pebble density, friction coefficient, wall structure, and discharge port size. Using a GPU-DEM numerical model, the effects of the friction coefficient on the cyclic loading and unloading of pebbles in the full-scale HTR-PM are studied. Numerical simulations with up to 420,000 spherical pebbles are conducted. Four sets of friction coefficient values are determined for comparative analysis based on experimental measurements. Discharging speed, residence time, stress, porosity, and velocity distribution are quantitatively analyzed. In addition, a comparison with the CT-PFD experiment is carried out to validate the numerical model. The results show that near-wall retention phenomena are observed in the reactor core only when using large friction coefficients. However, using friction coefficient values closer to the measured experimental values, the pebble bed in HTR-PM exhibited good flow characteristics. Furthermore, the friction coefficient also influences the porosity and velocity distribution of the pebble bed, with lower friction coefficients resulting in lower overall stress in the bed. The discharge outlet's influence varies with different friction coefficient values. In summary, this study demonstrates that the value of the friction coefficient has a complex influence on the pebble flow in HTR-PM, which provides important insights for future numerical and experimental studies in this field.

Abstract Resistance to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)–tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is a significant cause of treatment failure and cancer recurrence in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Approximately 30% of patients with EGFR-activating mutations exhibit primary resistance to EGFR–TKIs. However, the potential mechanisms of primary resistance to EGFR–TKIs remain poorly understood. Recent studies have shown that increased expression of programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) is associated with EGFR–TKIs resistance. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the mechanism of PD-L1 in primary resistance to EGFR–TKIs in EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cells. We found that PD-L1 was associated with poor prognosis in patients with EGFR-mutant LUAD, while the combination of EGFR–TKIs with chemotherapy could improve its therapeutic efficacy. In vitro and in vivo experiments revealed that PD-L1 promoted the proliferation and autophagy and inhibited the apoptosis of LUAD cells. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that upregulation of PD-L1 was critical in inducing autophagy through the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, which was beneficial for tumor progression and the development of gefitinib resistance. Furthermore, we found that gefitinib combined with pemetrexed could synergistically enhance antitumor efficacy in PD-L1-overexpression LUAD cells. Overall, our study demonstrated that PD-L1 contributed to primary resistance to EGFR–TKIs in EGFR-mutant LUAD cells, which may be mediated by inducing autophagy via the MAPK signaling pathway. These findings not only help improve the prognosis of patients with EGFR-mutant LUAD but also provide a reference for the research of other cancer types.

Abstract Astaxanthin biosynthesis in Haematococcus pluvialis is driven by energy. However, the effect of the flagella-mediated energy-consuming movement process on astaxanthin accumulation has not been well studied. In this study, the profiles of astaxanthin and NADPH contents in combination with the photosynthetic parameters with or without flagella enabled by pH shock were characterized. The results demonstrated that there was no significant alteration in cell morphology, with the exception of the loss of flagella observed in the pH shock treatment group. In contrast, the astaxanthin content in the flagella removal groups was 62.9%, 62.8% and 91.1% higher than that of the control at 4, 8 and 12 h, respectively. Simultaneously, the increased Y(II) and decreased Y(NO) suggest that cells lacking the flagellar movement process may allocate more energy towards astaxanthin biosynthesis. This finding was verified by NADPH analysis, which revealed higher levels in flagella removal cells. These results provide preliminary insights into the underlying mechanism of astaxanthin accumulation enabled by energy reassignment in movement-lacking cells.

The durability of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) in the marine environment is mainly influenced by chloride attack. In this paper, the chloride transport law in RAC with different recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) contents was investigated by dry-wet cycling tests considering RCA volume fractions. A five-phase randomly convex polygonal aggregate model was built through a self-compiled program and then a mesoscopic numerical method was established by finite element software development. The proposed numerical model was validated by experimental results and data from other scholars. The impact of interfacial transition zone (ITZ), RCA, new mortar and old mortar were studied. The results showed that: 1) As the thickness of ITZ grows, the chloride diffusion coefficient increases in RAC. When the thickness of the ITZ rises from 25 µm to 100 µm, the chloride diffusion coefficient rises by 37%; 2) The diffusion coefficient of ITZ and mortar have a positive impact on the diffusion of chloride ion in RAC; 3) The chloride diffusion coefficient of RAC is positively correlated with the volume fraction of RCA (VRCA). The chloride diffusion coefficient increases by 102.0% as the VRCA increases from 0% to 50%. The proposed mesoscopic model not only effectively simulates the chloride attack process but also can be used to simulate other ionic attack behaviors and mechanical properties of RAC.

Abstract Pleiotropy is frequently detected in agronomic traits of wheat (Triticum aestivum). A locus on chromosome 4B, QTn/Ptn/Sl/Sns/Al/Tgw/Gl/Gw.caas-4B, proved to show pleiotropic effects on tiller, spike, and grain traits using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population of Qingxinmai × 041133. The allele from Qingxinmai increased tiller numbers, and the allele from line 041133 produced better performances of spike traits and grain traits. Another 52 QTL for the eight traits investigated were detected on 18 chromosomes, except for chromosomes 5D, 6D, and 7B. Several genes in the genomic interval of the locus on chromosome 4B were differentially expressed in crown and inflorescence samples between Qingxinmai and line 041133. The development of the KASP marker specific for the locus on chromosome 4B is useful for molecular marker-assisted selection in wheat breeding.

Automated vehicles (AVs) hold the potential to reduce road accidents, mitigate traffic congestion, and improve travel experience. However, the possible countervailing impacts from the changes in underserved populations' vehicle travel demand tend to be overlooked. To determine the vehicle travel demand changes that resulted from underserved populations aged between 6 and 80, this paper explores the latent effect of AVs on vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT) in a fully AV environment using person trip survey data from the cities of Sanya, Shijiazhuang, and Shenzhen in China. This paper uses the natural decline hypothesis of travel demand and proposes a regression model to investigate the difference among the cities' latent vehicle travel demand. Results show that the average VKT of the overall population in Sanya, Shijiazhuang, and Shenzhen increased by 33.4%, 47.0%, and 46.8%, respectively. The analysis of the regression model confirms that the current travel behavior of individuals can affect the degree of increase in their average VKT. Integrating AVs into public transport, increasing the acceptance of automated shared mobility options, transforming road space use type, and prototyping AV designs with various features and needs are potential methods to cope with the countervailing impacts. The total VKT of the overall population increased by approximately 10%–25% depending on the city. The conclusions of this paper provide informative insights into the evaluation of VKT for underserved populations and contribute to the deployment of AVs to address equity and inclusion issues.

Abstract Crop wild relatives offer natural variations of disease resistance for crop improvement. Here, we report the isolation of broad-spectrum powdery mildew resistance gene Pm36, originated from wild emmer wheat, that encodes a tandem kinase with a transmembrane domain (WTK7-TM) through the combination of map-based cloning, PacBio SMRT long-read genome sequencing, mutagenesis, and transformation. Mutagenesis assay reveals that the two kinase domains and the transmembrane domain of WTK7-TM are critical for the powdery mildew resistance function. Consistently, in vitro phosphorylation assay shows that two kinase domains are indispensable for the kinase activity of WTK7-TM. Haplotype analysis uncovers that Pm36 is an orphan gene only present in a few wild emmer wheat, indicating its single ancient origin and potential contribution to the current wheat gene pool. Overall, our findings not only provide a powdery mildew resistance gene with great potential in wheat breeding but also sheds light into the mechanism underlying broad-spectrum resistance.

Magnesium chelatase (MgCh) plays a pivotal role in photosynthesis, catalyzing the insertion of magnesium into protoporphyrin IX (Proto IX), a key intermediate in chlorophyll (Chl) biosynthesis. MgCh is a heteromeric complex composed of the MgCh D subunit (CHLD), the MgCh H subunit (CHLH), and the MgCh I subunit (CHLI). The bright yellow leaves (byl) mutant was obtained through ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagenesis of the ‘FT’ Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) doubled haploid line, whose Chl content, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), and non-photochemical quenching coefficient (NPQ) were decreased, and whose chloroplast development was incomplete. byl recovered to a light green phenotype under weak light conditions. Genetic analysis revealed that the bright yellow leaves phenotype of byl was caused by a single recessive nuclear gene. Using Mutmap sequencing and Kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) identification, BraA01g010040.3.5C, encoding the CHLI subunit of MgCh, was identified as the candidate gene and named Brchli1. A nonsynonymous G-to-A mutation in the Brchli1 exon resulted in the substitution of aspartic acid with asparagine. Brchli1-silenced Chinese cabbage displayed bright yellow leaves with decreased Brchli1 expression. Transiently overexpressed Brchli1 in the byl mutant restored the green leaf phenotype and significantly increased relative Brchli1 expression levels. Both BrCHLI1 and its mutated variant were localized in chloroplasts. Yeast two-hybrid and luciferase complementation imaging assays demonstrated that BrCHLI1 interacted with both BrCHLD and itself. BrCHLI1 mutations did not affect its interaction with BrCHLD. Together, Brchli1 mutations impaired the function of MgCh, providing insights into the molecular mechanism of leaf coloration.

Calcined clay and limestone powder composites offer a viable solution for reducing carbon emissions in building materials by allowing significant cement replacement. However, there is a need for further investigation into their impact on durability, especially for low-grade clays. In this study, different ratios of metakaolin and quartz powder are utilized to simulate various grades of calcined clay, while limestone powder is incorporated as a partial cement substitute. Initially, the influence of metakaolin content on rapid chloride migration was analyzed. Subsequently, various analytical techniques such as free water content, Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP), X-ray diffraction (XRD)/Rietveld method, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test were employed to investigate the effects of metakaolin contents on the pore structure, phase assemblage, and electrochemical parameters of the blended cementitious system. The relationship between chloride migration coefficient and free water content, critical pore size, and impedance parameters was established to determine the key indicators for chloride migration. The study revealed that systems with partial metakaolin content demonstrate improved chloride resistance in the blended system, which could be predicted using Rct1 from the EIS test. Furthermore, the inclusion of metakaolin and limestone powder facilitated the formation of Monocarboaluminate (Mc) and Hemicarboaluminate (Hc), leading to the refinement of the pore structure and inhibition of chloride transport within the blended material. This study indicates the potential of low-grade calcined clay to enhance the overall durability of the blended cementitious system while contributing to carbon emissions reduction.

The undulating appearance of 3D-printed concrete (3DPC) is an essential feature that impacts the integrity and stability of the multilayer structure, yet the related evaluation parameters have rarely been proposed. This study proposed a quantitative evaluation and parameters through the on-site 3D scan technology to impel a direct and precise understanding of the surface quality of 3DPC, especially concrete with coarse aggregates. Firstly, 8-layer 3DPC walls are produced at four different printer printing rates and then 3D scanned. After point cloud correction, noise reduction, and 2D processing onto acquired points cloud, the evaluation parameters for evaluating 3DPC surface characteristics are defined and calculated. Results indicate that a higher 3D printer printing rate helps reduce surface fluctuation of 3DPC multilayer structures but disfavor the vertical flatness, of which the linear relationship between the parameters and the printing speed of the printer is explored and discussed. Recommendation of 3DPC straight wall structures controlled to surface defects ratio within 2% and slope within 0.2% is suggested. These conclusions provide precise external surface quality control and treatment basements that contribute to improving the practical application of 3DPC.

Abstract Background Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) is a prevalent cause of respiratory failure and death among newborns, and prompt diagnosis is imperative. Historically, diagnosis of NRDS relied mostly on typical clinical manifestations, chest X-rays, and CT scans. However, recently, ultrasound has emerged as a valuable and preferred tool for aiding NRDS diagnosis. Nevertheless, evaluating lung ultrasound imagery necessitates rigorous training and may be subject to operator-dependent bias, limiting its widespread use. As a result, it is essential to investigate a new, reliable, and operator-independent diagnostic approach that does not require subjective factors or operator expertise. This article aims to explore the diagnostic potential of ultrasound-based radiomics in differentiating NRDS from other non-NRDS lung disease. Methods A total of 150 neonatal lung disease cases were consecutively collected from the department of neonatal intensive care unit of the Quanzhou Maternity and Children’s Hospital, Fujian Province, from September 2021 to October 2022. Of these patients, 60 were diagnosed with NRDS, whereas 30 were diagnosed with neonatal pneumonia, meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), and transient tachypnea (TTN). Two ultrasound images with characteristic manifestations of each lung disease were acquired and divided into training (n = 120) and validation cohorts (n = 30) based on the examination date using an 8:2 ratio. The imaging texture features were extracted using PyRadiomics and, after the screening, machine learning models such as random forest (RF), logistic regression (LR), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), and multilayer perceptron (MLP) were developed to construct an imaging-based diagnostic model. The diagnostic efficacy of each model was analyzed. Lastly, we randomly selected 282 lung ultrasound images and evaluated the diagnostic efficacy disparities between the optimal model and doctors across differing levels of expertise. Results Twenty-two imaging-based features with the highest weights were selected to construct a predictive model for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. All models exhibited favorable diagnostic performances. Analysis of the Youden index demonstrated that the RF model had the highest score in both the training (0.99) and validation (0.90) cohorts. Additionally, the calibration curve indicated that the RF model had the best calibration (P = 0.98). When compared to the diagnostic performance of experienced and junior physicians, the RF model had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.99; however, the values for experienced and junior physicians were 0.98 and 0.85, respectively. Objectives: The purpose of this research was to summarize the clinical and prognostic features of cavernous sinus meningiomas (CSM), evaluate the treatment strategies and long-term prognosis of CSM, and improve the management of CSM and the treatment effect for patients. Methods: We retrospectively studied the data of 54 patients who received initial surgical resection and 45 patients who received initial gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for CSM at West China Hospital of Sichuan University from 2009 to 2021. Progression-free survival (PFS), Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) scores and neurological function recovery were adopted to assess a comprehensive management strategy for CSM. Results: Gross total resection (GTR) was performed in 51.9 % of cases with 3.7 % surgical mortality. The average follow-up time was 48.7 months, with a progression rate of 29.3 %. The overall improvement rate for cranial nerve function deficits was 50.0 %. By survival analysis, the extent of resection and the histological grade were significantly related to the prognosis. The role of postoperative GKRS is uncertain. For patients who received initial GKRS, the progression rate was 17.8 %, and the overall improvement rate for cranial nerve function deficits was 61.1 %. Primary treatment with GKRS showed better long-term tumor control in patients with CSM (P = 0.046). Conclusions: Maximum safe resection of CSM can improve the neurological function and quality of life of patients, but aggressive resection will cause high perioperative mortality and complication rates. For CSM patients who are suitable for initial gamma knife treatment, choosing GKRS can achieve better long-term tumor control and neurological outcomes.

In order to prevent the mixing of varieties and screen special medicinal or tea Chrysanthemum morifolium varieties, 16 samples of 8 medicinal C. morifolium varieties from different producing areas were used in this study. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography and colorimetry were used to determine the quality components from different producing areas, we also determined their yield and quality based on principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). The results showed that the variation coefficient of the amount of single capitulum per plant was the largest (39.03%) among the yield indexes, which was the main factor that constituted the dry weight of single capitulum per plant (r=0.800). Furthermore, the ‘Hongxin Ju’ from Zaozhuang had the highest value in both the amount of single capitulum (496.50) and dry weight of single capitulum per plant. It is a challenge to obtain highly tunable multifunctional performances in one ferroelectric system by a simple approach to meet the miniaturization, integration, and functionalization requirements of advanced electronic components. Herein, rare earth erbium (Er) modulated 0.9K0.5Na0.5NbO3-0.1Sr(1-x)ErxTi(1-x/4)O3, (0.9KNN-0.1ST: xEr) transparent-photoluminescent-ferroelectric energy storage multifunctional ceramics are prepared to solve this problem. The effect of lattice distortion and oxygen vacancies by Er doping on the optical and electrical properties is systematically investigated. The Er3+ ions can introduce a large distortion of the NbO6 octahedron by replacing the A-site in KNN-based ceramics. Thanks to the higher c/a ratio and lower oxygen vacancy content are simultaneously obtained in 0.9KNN-0.1ST: 0.1Er ceramics. The effective energy storage density (Wrec) of 0.86 J/cm3, excellent near-infrared transmittance of 51.7% (1 100 nm) and strong green upconversion photoluminescence are achieved in this multifunctional ceramic. This study provides a solid basis for rare earth ions doped ferroelectric ceramics with tunable multifunctional properties and has significant potential for applications in optoelectronic devices.

Multiphase stainless steel is a kind of stainless steel that obtains good mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the passive and pitting behaviors of multiphase stainless steel remain inadequately elucidated. This study aims to investigate the passive and pitting behaviors of multiphase stainless steel by employing Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electrochemical techniques. The conclusions drawn from this research are as follows: The main constituents of the passive film on multiphase stainless steel comprise FeO, Fe2O3, Cr2O3, and Cr(OH)2. The passive film on the martensitic phase displays largest thicknesses. The Cr content in the passive film of the ferritic phase is highest. Particularly, the passive film on the (111) orientation of martensitic phase is thicker than that on the (001) and (101) orientations. Pitting corrosion in multiphase stainless steel primarily initiates at phase interfaces and subsequently extends into the ferritic phase.

Pakchoi (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis) is cultivated for its high nutritional value; however, the nutritional diversity of different pakchoi cultivars is rarely investigated. Herein, we performed widely targeted metabolic profiling analyses of five popular pakchois. A total of 670 metabolites were detected, which could be divided into 13 categories. The accumulation patterns of main nutritional metabolites among the five pakchois were significantly different and complementary. Moreover, the pakchoi cultivar ‘QYC’ showed quite different metabolomic profiles compared with other pakchois. The Venn diagram showed that the 75 differential metabolites were shared among the comparison groups (‘QYC’ vs. ‘MET’/ ‘NBC’/ ‘PPQ’/ ‘XQC’), of which 52 metabolites were upregulated in ‘QYC’. The phenolic acids had the largest variations between ‘QYC’ and the other pakchoi cultivars. These findings expand metabolomic information on different pakchoi cultivars and further provide new insights into the selection and breeding of excellent pakchoi cultivars.

The gas-sensing application potential of the TO8C monolayer for the target gases (NO, NO2, CO, CO2, NH3, CH4, H2O, and H2) was systematically investigated via DFT calculations. Only NO and NO2 adsorption can tune the electronic properties of the TO8C monolayer. Since the weak adsorption strength of NO and NO2 is unfavorable for the sensor device, E-field modulation was applied. Except as the enhancement of adsorption strength into desired ranges for NO and NO2, E-field modulation of −0.14 ∼ −0.21 V/Å for NO (0.08 ∼ 0.12 V/Å and −0.26 ∼ −0.29 V/Å for NO2) makes semiconducting transfer into conducting properties, indicating the sensitivity of the monolayer towards NO and NO2 gases was also effectively improved. However, the electronic properties of TO8C monolayer adsorbed with the other gases were hardly changed by the above-mentioned E-fields. When the applied E-fields were in −0.12 ∼ −0.17 V/Å (or −0.26 ∼ −0.29 V/Å), the conducting properties for NO (or NO2) adsorption were maintained in the existence of humidity, indicating that the determinate E-field is much favorable for the TO8C-based sensor to detect NO and NO2 gases without considering whether the humidity exists. Our findings reveal that the TO8C monolayers are compelling and feasible candidates for NO and NO2 resistance-type sensors at room temperature under the E-field modulation.

Students' academic achievement relies on a variety of pedagogical, affective, and individual factors. The investigation of academic emotions and epistemic cognition has been a focal point in existing research. Previous studies have predominantly delved into the essence of students' epistemic cognition and academic emotions. Nonetheless, the correlation between the epistemic cognition, academic emotions, and academic success of Chinese undergraduate students remains inadequately explored. This research delves into the interconnectedness of these variables and examines which facets of epistemic cognition and academic emotions can forecast students' academic performance. A total of three hundred and eighty (380) Chinese undergraduate students were chosen via random sampling for this study. Their self-reported academic achievements were taken into account. Additionally, they completed questionnaires tailored to evaluate their epistemic cognition and academic emotions. The participants' scores underwent Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses. The findings indicate that positive emotions correlate positively, while negative emotions correlate negatively with students' academic success. Furthermore, positive emotions and three categories of epistemic cognition were found to be predictors of students' academic accomplishments. In conclusion, it is deduced that both epistemic cognition and positive emotions play a role in enhancing students' academic success. The implications of these findings extend to educational psychologists, educators, and students, both theoretically and practically.

A recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from wheat landrace Qingxinmai and breeding line 041133 exhibited segregation in resistance to powdery mildew and stripe rust in five and three field tests, respectively. A 16K genotyping by target sequencing (GBTS) single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array-based genetic linkage map was used to dissect the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for disease resistance. Four and seven QTLs were identified for adult-plant resistance (APR) against powdery mildew and stripe rust. QPm.caas-1B and QPm.caas-5A on chromosomes 1B and 5A were responsible for the APR against powdery mildew in line 041133. QYr.caas-1B, QYr.caas-3B, QYr.caas-4B, QYr.caas-6B.1, QYr.caas-6B.2, and QYr.caas-7B detected on the five B-genome chromosomes of line 041133 conferred its APR to stripe rust. QPm.caas-1B and QYr.caas.1B were co-localized with the pleiotropic locus Lr46/Yr29/Sr58/Pm39/Ltn2. A Kompetitive Allele Specific Polymorphic (KASP) marker KASP_1B_668028290 was developed to trace QPm/Yr.caas.1B. Four lines pyramiding six major disease resistance loci, PmQ, Yr041133, QPm/Yr.caas-1B, QPm.caas-2B.1, QYr.caas-3B, and QPm.caas-6B, were developed. They displayed effective resistance against both powdery mildew and stripe rust at the seedling and adult-plant stages.

Abstract Background Osteosarcoma is a rare bone malignancy that frequently affects adolescents and poses formidable obstacles in its advanced stages. Studies revealed that PSMD14 may be a viable osteosarcoma treatment target. However, PSMD14’s function and mechanism in osteosarcoma remain unknown. This study aimed to examine the function and mechanism of PSMD14 in the biological behavior of osteosarcoma and its role in anlotinib resistance. Methods Western blotting, qRT-PCR, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) studies were used to examine PSMD14 levels. The role of PSMD14 in the malignant phenotype of osteosarcoma and its molecular pathway was explored by a series of studies, including Western blotting, cell amplification assay, transwell assay, and tumor growth. Furthermore, a series of in vitro investigations were done to determine the effect of PSMD14 on anlotinib-resistant osteosarcoma cell lines. Results PSMD14 expression was elevated in osteosarcoma tissues compared to normal tissues. Overexpression of PSMD14 was associated with osteosarcoma patients’ pathological grade and clinical stage, and PSMD14 was an independent poor prognostic factor. PSMD14 knockdown inhibits in vitro cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and in vivo tumor growth. PSMD14 knockdown has the potential to downregulate the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, which was regarded as one of the key mechanisms promoting tumor growth. PSMD14 was likewise overexpressed in anlotinib-resistant OS cell lines, and its knockdown not only reduced the proliferation, migration, and invasion of subline cells and triggered cell apoptosis. Importantly, combination therapy with anlotinib enhanced these effects. Conclusions PSMD14 is substantially expressed in osteosarcoma and may be an independent risk factor associated with poor prognosis. It can promote tumor progression and anlotinib resistance in osteosarcoma and may promote osteosarcoma progression by modulating PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

Abstract Background The Gibberellic Acid-Stimulated Arabidopsis (GASA) gene family is widely involved in the regulation of plant growth, development, and stress response. However, information on the GASA gene family has not been reported in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis). Results Here, we conducted genome-wide identification and analysis of the GASA genes in Chinese cabbage. In total, 15 GASA genes were identified in the Chinese cabbage genome, and the physicochemical property, subcellular location, and tertiary structure of the corresponding GASA proteins were elucidated. Phylogenetic analysis, conserved motif, and gene structure showed that the GASA proteins were divided into three well-conserved subfamilies. Synteny analysis proposed that the expansion of the GASA genes was influenced mainly by whole-genome duplication (WGD) and transposed duplication (TRD) and that duplication gene pairs were under negative selection. Cis-acting elements of the GASA promoters were involved in plant development, hormonal and stress responses. Expression profile analysis showed that the GASA genes were widely expressed in different tissues of Chinese cabbage, but their expression patterns appeared to diverse. The qRT-PCR analysis of nine GASA genes confirmed that they responded to salt stress, heat stress, and hormonal triggers. Conclusions Overall, this study provides a theoretical basis for further exploring the important role of the GASA gene family in the functional genome of Chinese cabbage.

This study investigated the effect of alternating current (AC) on the electrochemical and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior and mechanism of TA2 in a simulated marine solution. The increase in the open circuit potential and charge transfer resistance indicated that the passivation film remained undamaged by varying AC densities, indicating a low risk of SCC. However, under the synergistic effect of AC and direct current (DC), the potential significantly shifted negatively, leading to hydrogen evolution reactions and the formation of a hydride layer. This hydride-induced hydrogen embrittlement posed a potential risk to the integrity of TA2.

Abstract Background The breast milk bank is a professional organization that collects donor human milk (DHM) for special medical needs by recruiting qualified breast milk donors. Such organizations are also responsible for the disinfection, processing, testing, storage, distribution, and use of breast milk. As DHM is a biological product, it may get contaminated. Microbiological testing is the final step to determine microbial contamination of DHM. However, a universal method for the microbiological analysis of DHM in breast milk banks globally is lacking.DHM without strict screening may become a potential carrier of pathogens and seriously threaten the health of infants. Clostridium perfringens, a gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, is capable of causing wound infections, including gas gangrene, enteritis/enterocolitis, and enterotoxemia. Here, the first case of C. perfringens detected in DHM has been reported to facilitate the identification of such contamination in breast milk banks. Case presentation A breastfeeding mother donated 3000 mL of milk to the breast milk bank of the First Affiliated Hospital of the Army Medical University(over 2900 beds and patient receiving capacity of over 132,000), Chongqing, China. The milk sample was subjected to microbiological screening using liquid enrichment, followed by anaerobic and aerobic culturing. The results revealed the growth of C. perfringens in the anaerobic culture medium, but no bacteria or yeast-like fungi were observed in the aerobic culture medium. The donor did not exhibit any clinical symptoms, and her routine blood results and body temperature were normal. However, the infant fed with her milk had recurrent bloody stools. Breast milk bank infection control emergency handling as well as environmental sampling and investigation revealed that the cause was contamination of the donor’s home-use breast pump with C. perfringens. The infant no longer experienced bloody stool once the donor changed the breast pump. Conclusions C. perfringens can enter breast milk from contaminated pumping environments or devices, thus causing illness in infants. The microbiological testing of DHM in breast milk banks can be accomplished using liquid enrichment, along with anaerobic and aerobic culture, which is of immense significance in improving the standards for microbiological screening, DHM safety, and infant health.

Abstract Background The unique expression pattern endows oncofetal genes with great value in cancer diagnosis and treatment. However, only a few oncofetal genes are available for clinical use and the underlying mechanisms that drives the fetal-like reprogramming of cancer cells remain largely unknown. Methods Microarray assays and bioinformatic analyses were employed to screen for potential oncofetal long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The expression levels of MIR4435-2HG, NOP58 ribonucleoprotein (NOP58), insulin like growth factor 2 mRNA binding protein 1 (IGF2BP1) and stem markers were detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The 2′-O-methylation (2′-O-Me) status of rRNA were detected through reverse transcription at low dNTP concentrations followed by PCR. The regulation of MIR4435-2HG by IGF2BP1 was explored by RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP), methylated RIP (MeRIP) and dual-luciferase assays. The interaction between MIR4435-2HG and NOP58 was investigated by RNA Pulldown, RIP and protein stability assays. In vitro and in vivo function assays were performed to detect the roles of MIR4435-2HG/NOP58 in HCC. Results MIR4435-2HG was an oncofetal lncRNA associated with poor prognosis in HCC. Functional experiments showed that overexpression of MIR4435-2HG remarkably enhanced the stem-cell properties of HCC cells, promoting tumorigenesis in vitro and in vivo. Mechanically, MIR4435-2HG directly bound NOP58 and IGF2BP1. IGF2BP1 upregulated MIR4435-2HG expression in HCC through N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification. Moreover, MIR4435-2HG protected NOP58 from degradation, which raised rRNA 2’-O-Me levels and promoted internal ribosome entry site (IRES)-dependent translation of oncogenes. Conclusions This study identified an oncofetal lncRNA MIR4435-2HG, characterized the role of MIR4435-2HG/NOP58 in stemness maintenance and proliferation of HCC cells, and confirmed m6A as a ‘driver’ that reactivated MR4435-2HG expression in HCC.

Abstract BackgroundThe potential benefits of IT for the well-being of older adults have been widely anticipated. However, findings regarding the impact of internet use on depressive symptoms are inconsistent. As a result of IT’s exponential growth, internet skills have supplanted internet access as the source of the digital divide. ObjectiveThis study evaluates the effect of internet skills on depressive symptoms through an instrumental variables (IV) approach. MethodsData from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study’s wave 4 (2018) were used. This included 16,949 community residents aged 45 years and older. To overcome the endogeneity issue, we used an IV approach. ResultsOur results reveal the emergence of a second-level digital divide, the disparity in internet skills, among Chinese middle-aged and older adults. Liner regression suggests that a 1% increase in internet skills is associated with a 0.037% decrease in depressive symptoms (β=−.037, SE 0.009), which underestimates the causal effect. As expected, internet skills are an endogenous variable (FPF–1P ConclusionsBetter mental health is predicted through improved and higher internet skills. Consequently, residents and policy makers in China should focus on bridging the digital divide in internet skills among middle-aged and older adults.

Mammals harbor a limited number of sound-receptor hair cells (HCs) that cannot be regenerated after damage. Thus, investigating the underlying molecular mechanisms that maintain HC survival is crucial for preventing hearing impairment. Intriguingly, Pou4f3-/- or Gfi1-/- HCs form initially but then rapidly degenerate, whereas Rbm24-/- HCs degenerate considerably later. However, the transcriptional cascades involving Pou4f3, Gfi1, and Rbm24 remain undescribed. Here, we demonstrate that Rbm24 expression is completely repressed in Pou4f3-/- HCs but unaltered in Gfi1-/- HCs, and further that the expression of both POU4F3 and GFI1 is intact in Rbm24-/- HCs. Moreover, by using in vivo mouse transgenic reporter assays, we identify three Rbm24 enhancers to which POU4F3 binds. Lastly, through in vivo genetic testing of whether Rbm24 restoration alleviates the degeneration of Pou4f3-/- HCs, we show that ectopic Rbm24 alone cannot prevent Pou4f3-/- HCs from degenerating. Collectively, our findings provide new molecular and genetic insights into how HC survival is regulated.

Flexoelectric effect describes the electromechanical coupling between the strain gradient and its internal polarization in all dielectrics. Despite this universality, the resulting flexoelectric field remains small at the macroscopic level. However, in nanosystems, the size-dependent effect of flexoelectricity becomes increasingly significant, leading to a notable flexoelectric field that can strongly influence the material’s physical properties. This review aims to explore the flexoelectric effect specifically at the nanoscale. We achieve this by examining strain gradients generated through two distinct methods: internal inhomogeneous strain and external stimulation. In addition, advanced synthesis techniques are utilized to enhance the properties and functionalities associated with flexoelectricity. Furthermore, we delve into other coupled phenomena observed in thin films, including the coupling and utilization of flexomagnetic and flexophotovoltaic effects. This review presents the latest advancements in these areas and highlights their role in driving further breakthroughs in the field of flexoelectricity.

Abstract Peculiar hierarchical microstructures in creatures inspire modern material design with distinct functionalities. Creatures can effortlessly construct sophisticated yet long‐range ordered microstructure across bio‐membrane through ion secretion and precipitation. However, microstructure biomimicry in current technology generally requires elaborate, point‐by‐point fabrication. Herein, a spontaneous yet controllable strategy is developed to achieve surface microstructure engineering through a natural surface phenomenon similar to ion secretion‐precipitation, that is, coupled dissolution‐precipitation. A series of hierarchical microstructures on mineral surfaces in fluids with tunable morphology, orientation, dimension, and spatial distribution are achieved by simply controlling initial dissolution and fluid chemistry. In seawater, long‐range ordered film of vertically aligned brucite flakes forms through interfacial dissolution, nucleation, and confinement‐induced orientation of flakes with vertically grown {110} plane, on the edge of which, fusiform aragonite epitaxially precipitates. With negligible initial surface dissolution, prismatic aragonite epitaxially grows on a calcite polyhedron‐packed surface. By tuning fluid chemistry, closely packed calcite polyhedron and loosely packed calcite micro‐pillars are engineered through rapid and retarded precipitation, respectively. Surprisingly, the spontaneously grown microstructures resemble those deliberately created by human or found in nature, and tremendously modulate surface functionality. These findings open new possibilities for facile and customizable engineering of microstructural surfaces, hierarchical heterostructures, and biomimetic materials.

Hydrophobic interactions are widely applied in diverse fields, yet the effect of the degree of hydrophobicity on the interactions between hydrophobic surfaces is still unaddressed, limiting the development of functional hydrophobic surfaces. In this study, the interfacial interactions and configuration of hydrophobic chains on surfaces with ranging hydrophobicity are surveyed by surface forces apparatus. Our findings revealed that with partial hydrophobicity, a long-range electrical double-layer repulsive force pertains between surfaces, while between fully hydrophobized surfaces, only steric hindrance is observed, and the hydrophobic chains maintain configuration even after long time compression. Our findings provide useful implications for understanding hydrophobic interactions.

Abstract Methylammonium chloride (MACl) additive is almost irreplaceable in high‐performance formamidine perovskite photovoltaics. Nevertheless, Some of the problems that can arise from adding MACl are rarely mentioned. Herein, it is proposed for the first time that the addition of MACl would cause the non‐stoichiometric ratio in the perovskite film, resulting in the halogen vacancy. It is demonstrated that the non‐synchronous volatilization of methylamine cations and chloride ions leads to the formation of halogen vacancy defects. To solve this problem, the NH4HCOO is introduced into the perovskite precursor solution to passivate the halogen vacancy. The HCOO− ions have a strong force with lead ions and can fill the halogen vacancy defects. Consequently, the champion devices' power conversion efficiency (PCE) can be improved from 21.23% to 23.72% with negligible hysteresis. And the unencapsulated device can still retain >90% of the initial PCE even operating in N2 atmosphere for over 1200 h. This work illustrates another halogen defect source in the MACl‐assisted formamidine perovskite photovoltaics and provides a new route to obtain high‐performance perovskite solar cells.

IntroductionCritically ill patients are more susceptible to malnutrition due to their severe illness. Moreover, elderly patients who are critically ill lack specific nutrition recommendations, with nutritional care in the intensive care units (ICUs) deplorable for the elderly. This study aims to investigate nutrition treatment and its correlation to mortality in elderly patients who are critically ill in intensive care units.MethodA multiple-center prospective cohort study was conducted in China from 128 intensive care units (ICUs). A total of 1,238 elderly patients were included in the study from 26 April 2017. We analyzed the nutrition characteristics of elderly patients who are critically ill, including initiated timing, route, ways of enteral nutrition (EN), and feeding complications, including the adverse aspects of feeding, acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI), and feeding interruption. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to screen out the impact of nutrition treatment on a 28-day survival prognosis of elderly patients in the ICU.ResultA total of 1,238 patients with a median age of 76 (IQR 70–83) were enrolled in the study. The Sequential Organ Failure (SOFA) median score was 7 (interquartile range: IQR 5–10) and the median Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II was 21 (IQR 16–25). The all-cause mortality score was 11.6%. The percentage of nutritional treatment initiated 24 h after ICU admission was 58%, with an EN of 34.2% and a parenteral nutrition (PN) of 16.0% in elderly patients who are critically ill. Patients who had gastrointestinal dysfunction with AGI stage from 2 to 4 were 25.2%. Compared to the survivors’ group, the non-survivors group had a lower ratio of EN delivery (57% vs. 71%; p = 0.015), a higher ratio of post-pyloric feeding (9% vs. 2%; p = 0.027), and higher frequency of feeding interrupt (24% vs. 17%, p = 0.048). Multivariable logistics regression analysis showed that patients above 76 years old with OR (odds ratio) 2.576 (95% CI, 1.127–5.889), respiratory rate > 22 beats/min, and ICU admission for 24 h were independent risk predictors of the 28-day mortality study in elderly patients who are critically ill. Similarly, other independent risk predictors of the 28-day mortality study were those with an OR of 2.385 (95%CI, 1.101–5.168), lactate >1.5 mmol/L, and ICU admission for 24 h, those with an OR of 7.004 (95%CI, 2.395–20.717) and early PN delivery within 24 h of ICU admission, and finally those with an OR of 5.401 (95%CI, 1.175–24.821) with EN delivery as reference.ConclusionThis multi-center prospective study describes clinical characteristics, the mode and timing of nutrition treatment, frequency of AGI, and adverse effects of nutrition in elderly ICU patients. According to this survey, ICU patients with early PN delivery, older age, faster respiratory rate, and higher lactate level may experience poor prognosis.

Summary: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays an important role in malignant tumor progression. Recently, accumulating evidence has shown that autophagy is involved in the regulation of EMT-induced migration. Therefore, the exploration of targets to inhibit EMT by targeting autophagy is important. In this study, we found that OVO-like zinc finger 2 (OVOL2) may be a key target for regulating autophagy-induced EMT. Firstly, we found that OVOL2 expression was dramatically downregulated in LUAD. Low expression of OVOL2 is an indicator of poor prognosis in LUAD. In vitro experiments have shown that downregulation of OVOL2 expression induces EMT, thereby promoting malignant biological behavior, such as proliferation, migration, and invasion of LUAD cells. Interestingly, autophagy is a key step in regulating OVOL2 and inducing EMT. Furthermore, OVOL2 regulates autophagy through the MAPK signaling pathway, ultimately inhibiting the malignant progression of LUAD.

The electric meter box is a terminal device with a large number in the power grid. It may cause electrical hazards and property loss if damaged. Inspection of electricity meter boxes still relies on manual inspection with low efficiency and low automation. But image-based automated inspection is also limited by equipment battery and insufficient computing power, which makes the inspection system in urgent need of efficient model. However, lightweight model may reduce model robustness and be susceptible to interference from complex backgrounds due to insufficient feature extraction. Meanwhile, there are no publicly available datasets for electric meter boxes at present. To address the above issues, we firstly constructed a dataset, named EMB-11. After that, we improved the YOLOv7-tiny to design a novel model for electric meter box defect detection, named EMB-YOLO. In EMB-YOLO, we proposed the Big Kernel ShuffleBlock which can increase the effective receptive field and reduce the model parameters. Additionally, we proposed ELAN-CBAM to enhance the robustness of the model and reduce the interference of background noise. Finally, we constructed RepBSB based on the idea of structural reparameterization to reduce the size of the trained model. Compared to YOLOv7-tiny, the size of EMB-YOLO is only 4.82 Mb, which is reduced by 20.3 %. The detection speed is 343 frames/s, which is increased by 14.3 %. Most importantly, mAP can reach 82.8 %, which is increased by 3.5 %, reaching the SOTA level.

This paper presents a composite control algorithm for the radio telescope servo control system to address the target tracking and matched/mismatched disturbance suppression problems. The algorithm consists of the equivalent-input-disturbance (EID) approach and the optimal control method. An EID estimator is developed using the difference between the estimated output of the state observer and the measurement output and then the estimate of the EID is fed forward into the control input to reject the disturbance. A cost function with clear physical meaning is selected and the weighting parameters are adjusted for the optimal controller to improve tracking performance. Considering the nonminimum phase characteristics of the radio telescope system, the state observer gain is computed using the linear matrix inequality (LMI) method. The system stability is analyzed using the small gain theorem, and the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control method is utilized to determine the state feedback gain. Finally, the composite controller is designed for an identified telescope model. Simulation results show that for the tracking performance, the settling time of proposed method is 1.13 s and reduces by about 0.32 s and 0.87 s than that of the ADRC controller and PI controller, respectively. For the antidisturbance performance, the RMS value and the maximum error of the proposed method are 0.0039 and 0.0128, which are 42.86% and 40.38% of the ADRC controller and 30.71% and 27.77% of the PI controller, respectively, which indicates that the proposed method has better control performance. In addition, the proposed controller has certain robustness to systematic parameter perturbations.
