Abstract In the Loess Plateau, the impact of abandoned farmland on soil properties and enzyme activity, along with its temporal variations and potential driving factors, remains a mystery. This study was designed to systematically and comprehensively examine the variations in soil enzyme activities, particle size distribution, and stability of soil aggregates at different stages of ecological recovery in the Loess Plateau. Our findings reveal a nuanced temporal pattern: with the progression of cropland abandonment, there is a notable decrease in soil bulk density. Concurrently, a dynamic trend in enzyme activities is observed—initially exhibiting a decline, followed by an increase over extended periods of recovery. Notably, prolonged abandonment leads to marked enhancements in soil structure. Parameters such as the mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) of soil aggregates show an overall increasing trend. In terms of the Relative Dissipation Index (RSI), our data indicate a sequence of control > 2 years of abandonment > 4 years > 6 years > 14 years. From this, it can be seen that fallowing may be an effective natural restoration strategy for improving the physical structure of soils in the Loess Plateau and restoring soil nutrients. However, positive changes may take a long time to become evident.

Abstract Recent research in multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) has increasingly focused on the role of short-range order (SRO) on material performance. However, the mechanisms of SRO formation and its precise control remain elusive, limiting the progress of SRO engineering. Here, leveraging advanced additive manufacturing techniques that produce samples with a wide range of cooling rates (up to 107 K s−1) and an enhanced semi-quantitative electron microscopy method, we characterize SRO in three CoCrNi-based face-centered-cubic (FCC) MPEAs. Surprisingly, irrespective of the processing and thermal treatment history, all samples exhibit similar levels of SRO. Atomistic simulations reveal that during solidification, prevalent local chemical order arises in the liquid-solid interface (solidification front) even under the extreme cooling rate of 1011 K s−1. This phenomenon stems from the swift atomic diffusion in the supercooled liquid, which matches or even surpasses the rate of solidification. Therefore, SRO is an inherent characteristic of most FCC MPEAs, insensitive to variations in cooling rates and even annealing treatments typically available in experiments.

Abstract Background Unfavourable lipid and glucose levels may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, there is a lack of prospective studies on the relationship between lipid profiles, lipid ratios and GDM during pregnancy. Aims To prospectively investigate the relationship between lipid profile and lipid ratios in early and mid-pregnancy and their pattern of change from early to mid-pregnancy and the risk of GDM. Methods This nested case-control study was based on maternal and child healthcare hospitals from Fujian Province, China. We included pregnant women who delivered in the hospital from January 2021 to June 2023. Lipid profiles (TC, TG, ApoA1, ApoB, HDL-c, LDL-c) and fasting glucose were measured before 14 weeks of gestation and between 20 and 28 weeks of gestation, and lipid ratios (triglyceride glucose index, TG/HDL-c and TC/HDL-c) was constructed. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between lipid profile, lipid ratios and GDM. Results Of 1586 pregnant women, 741 were diagnosed with GDM. After adjusting for potential confounders, TG, ApoA1, ApoB, LDL-c, triglyceride glucose index, TG/HDL-c, and TC/HDL-c in early pregnancy were positively associated with the risk of GDM (odds ratios [95% CI] for extreme interquartile comparisons were 2.040 (1.468–2.843), 1.506 (1.091–2.082), 1.529 (1.110–2.107), 1.504 (1.086–2.086), 1.952 (1.398–2.731), 2.127 (1.526–2.971), and 2.370 (1.700-3.312), all trend P

Abstract Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most frequent leukemia in adults with a high mortality rate. Current diagnostic criteria and selections of therapeutic strategies are generally based on gene mutations and cytogenetic abnormalities. Chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are the major therapeutic strategies for AML. Two dilemmas in the clinical management of AML are related to its poor prognosis. One is the inaccurate risk stratification at diagnosis, leading to incorrect treatment selections. The other is the frequent resistance to chemotherapy and/or targeted therapies. Genomic features have been the focus of AML studies. However, the DNA-level aberrations do not always predict the expression levels of genes and proteins and the latter is more closely linked to disease phenotypes. With the development of high-throughput sequencing and mass spectrometry technologies, studying downstream effectors including RNA, proteins, and metabolites becomes possible. Transcriptomics can reveal gene expression and regulatory networks, proteomics can discover protein expression and signaling pathways intimately associated with the disease, and metabolomics can reflect precise changes in metabolites during disease progression. Moreover, omics profiling at the single-cell level enables studying cellular components and hierarchies of the AML microenvironment. The abundance of data from different omics layers enables the better risk stratification of AML by identifying prognosis-related biomarkers, and has the prospective application in identifying drug targets, therefore potentially discovering solutions to the two dilemmas. In this review, we summarize the existing AML studies using omics methods, both separately and combined, covering research fields of disease diagnosis, risk stratification, prognosis prediction, chemotherapy, as well as targeted therapy. Finally, we discuss the directions and challenges in the application of multi-omics in precision medicine of AML. Our review may inspire both omics researchers and clinical physicians to study AML from a different angle.

Interferometry with computer-generated holograms (CGHs) is a unique solution for the highly accurate testing of large-aperture aspheric mirrors. However, no direct testing method for quantifying the measurement accuracy of CGHs has been developed. In this study, we developed a methodology for verifying CGH accuracy based on an element that is functionally equivalent to a large-aperture mirror in terms of accuracy verification. The equivalent element decreased the aperture by one or higher orders of magnitude, implying that the mirror could be replaced by a non-CGH technology in a comparison test. In this study, a 281 mm diamond-turned mirror was fabricated as the equivalent element of a 3.5 m aspheric mirror and measured using CGH and LUPHOScan profilometers. Surface error composition and root-mean-square (RMS) density analyses were performed. The methodology verification accuracy of the CGH was 4 nm (RMS) in the low- to mid-frequency bands, with a measured surface accuracy of approximately 10 nm (RMS). This methodology provides a feasible solution for CGH accuracy verification, ensuring high-accuracy and reliable testing of large-aperture aspheric mirrors.

Objective The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of sodium salicylate (SS) on semen preservation and metabolic regulation in goats. Methods Under the condition of low temperature, SS was added to goat semen diluent to detect goat sperm motility, plasma membrane, acrosome, antioxidant capacity, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and metabonomics. Results The results show that at the 8th day of low-temperature storage, the sperm motility of the 20 μM SS group was 66.64%, and the integrity rates of the plasma membrane and acrosome were both above 60%, significantly higher than those of the other groups. The activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase in the sperm of the 20 μM SS group were significantly higher than those of the control group, the contents of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde were significantly lower than those in the control group, the MMP was significantly higher than that in the control group, and the contents of Ca2+ and total cholesterol were significantly higher than those in the control group. Through metabonomics analysis, there were significant metabolic differences between the control group and the 20 μM SS group. Twenty of the most significant metabolic markers were screened, mainly involving five metabolic pathways, of which nicotinic acid and nicotinamide metabolic pathways were the most significant. Conclusion The results indicate that SS can effectively improve the low-temperature preservation quality of goat sperm.

We present measurements of the 2p-3d transition opacity of a hot molybdenum–scandium sample with nearly half-vacant molybdenum M-shell configurations. A plastic-tamped molybdenum–scandium foil sample is radiatively heated to high temperature in a compact D-shaped gold Hohlraum driven by ∼30 kJ laser energy at the SG-100 kJ laser facility. X rays transmitted through the molybdenum and scandium plasmas are diffracted by crystals and finally recorded by image plates. The electron temperatures in the sample in particular spatial and temporal zones are determined by the K-shell absorption of the scandium plasma. A combination of the IRAD3D view factor code and the MULTI hydrodynamic code is used to simulate the spatial distribution and temporal behavior of the sample temperature and density. The inferred temperature in the molybdenum plasma reaches a average of 138 ± 11 eV. A detailed configuration-accounting calculation of the n = 2–3 transition absorption of the molybdenum plasma is compared with experimental measurements and quite good agreement is found. The present measurements provide an opportunity to test opacity models for complicated M-shell configurations.

Abstract The large‐sized nanofilm‐constructed hierarchical porous SiO2 (LNCHPS) is successfully prepared by the dual templating approach and subsequently used as the support for g‐C3N4. A series of characterization techniques are conducted to evaluate the structure and property of the as‐prepared materials. The LNCHPS possesses two sets of explicated successive pass‐through macropores (0.5–1.0 µm) with large specific surface area. In addition, the macropore wall is constructed by uniform mesoporous nanofilms with the thickness ranging from 35 to 50 nm. Then, the photocatalytic property is investigated by degradations towards Rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated sunlight, in which experiments have been performed through controlling the g‐C3N4 loading contents, solution pH values, and photocatalyst dosages. The apparent rate constant of g‐C3N4/LNCHPS could reach 0.03 min−1 under optimum conditions, showing 6.0 times that of the bulk g‐C3N4. In addition, g‐C3N4/LNCHPS also exhibits significantly enhanced performance in H2 evolution (39.9 µmol h−1) compared to that of the bulk g‐C3N4. High light absorption and utilization, enhanced adsorption capability and quick electron hole separation can render this fine structure excellent photocatalytic performance. Our work enables a facile route for large‐scale preparation of g‐C3N4/LNCHPS for addressing the wastewater treatment and hydrogen energy production simultaneously.

The correction of sea surface brightness temperature is crucial for improving the accuracy of sea surface salinity (SSS) retrieval by L-band microwave radiometer. However, the traditional method of correcting brightness temperature using only wind speed and significant wave height (SWH) is inadequate, as sea surface roughness is affected by multiple factors. The Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometer (GNSS-R) observables, which directly respond to sea surface roughness, have been preliminarily validated in ground-based experiments for their potential to correct sea surface brightness temperature. Compared with ground-based GNSS-R, spaceborne GNSS-R has a wider coverage and can better support the brightness temperature correction of spaceborne L-band microwave radiometers. This article has preliminarily verified the correlation between cyclone GNSS (CYGNSS) observables and brightness temperature variations, and found that the incidence angle of the observable needs to be taken into account when retrieving SSS jointly with soil moisture active and passive (SMAP) and CYGNSS. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) model was established to assess the SSS retrieval performance of SMAP combined with different parameters. The results show that the retrieval performance based on the MLP model is better than that based on the geophysical model function model. Compared with joint wind speed and SWH, joint CYGNSS observables performs better in retrieving SSS. The root mean square error of retrieval salinity decreased from 0.58 to 0.46 psu, and the correlation coefficient (R) increased from 0.83 to 0.90. This provides reference for future joint retrieval of SSS using L-band microwave radiometers and spaceborne GNSS-R.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is widely used in many fields, but its data processing is limited by proprietary software and interdisciplinary knowledge. To address this challenge, we introduce GPRlab, a MATLAB-based software for GPR data processing and analysis, intended to serve potential GPR researchers across diverse fields. GPRlab performs GPR B-Scan data processing and A-Scan waveform analysis tasks. GPRlab has the characteristics of supporting diverse data formats, modular processing workflow, and knowledge transfer, making it adaptable for users of different professional levels and application fields. GPRlab has the potential to be a fundamental tool for researching and teaching GPR technology.

Irrigation can increase crop yields and could be a key climate adaptation strategy. At present, under the background of increasing food demand and continuous expansion of irrigation cropland, there still uncertainties about the soil carbon dynamics under the change of irrigation water volume and irrigated area in view of large-scale spatial heterogeneity. Therefore, this paper uses space-for-time + meta-analysis and a two-step methodology based on the residual trend analysis to quantitatively analyze the relationship between soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil respiration (Rs) in response to fluctuations in irrigation water volume and irrigated land extents. Here we show that the irrigation water volume within 100–1000 mm had a negative impact on SOC, and the impact was correlated with the irrigation water volume. Different levels of irrigation water manifest distinct effects on SOC content across varying soil depths. When irrigation water quantities are less than 700 mm, the impact on SOC content in the 0–30 cm depth layer surpasses that in the 30–200 cm depth layer. Conversely, when irrigation water quantities equal or exceed 700 mm, this pattern is reversed. The overall impact of irrigation on SOC stock at a depth of 0–200 cm was −14.88±6.7%. Tillage, planting intensity, topography, and soil type within irrigated cropland all exert variable impacts on SOC content. Whether these influences are deleterious or beneficial hinges predominantly upon the balance between the augmentation of SOC stock due to heightened carbon inputs from crops and the reduction of SOC through alterations in microbial activity. Mann-Kendall trend analysis showed that from 2000 to 2015, the overall Rs of cropland showed an increasing trend, with an increase rate of 3.67 g/m2/year. The increase of global Rs is mainly driven by climate change factors (temperature, precipitation and solar radiation), while the decrease of Rs in a small number of areas is mainly driven by management practices (fertilizer nitrogen, irrigation, and tillage). Our study further quantifies the impact of irrigation on soil carbon dynamics, thereby offering potential pathways and data support for the advancement of sustainable agriculture.

A self-consistent and precise method to determine the time-dependent radiative albedo, i.e., the ratio of the reemission flux to the incident flux, for an indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion Hohlraum wall material is proposed. A specially designed symmetrical triple-cavity gold Hohlraum is used to create approximately constant and near-equilibrium uniform radiation with a peak temperature of 160 eV. The incident flux at the secondary cavity waist is obtained from flux balance analysis and from the shock velocity of a standard sample. The results agree well owing to the symmetrical radiation in the secondary cavity. A self-consistent and precise time-dependent radiative albedo is deduced from the reliable reemission flux and the incident flux, and the result from the shock velocity is found to have a smaller uncertainty than that from the multi-angle flux balance analysis, and also to agree well with the result of a simulation using the HYADES opacity.

The role of tropical forests in the global carbon budget remains controversial, as carbon emissions from deforestation are highly uncertain. This high uncertainty arises from the use of either fixed forest carbon stock density or maps generated from satellite-based optical reflectance with limited sensitivity to biomass to generate accurate estimates of emissions from deforestation. New space missions aiming to accurately map the carbon stock density rely on direct measurements of the spatial structures of forests using lidar and radar. We found that lost forests are special cases, and their spatial structures can be directly measured by combining archived data acquired before and after deforestation by space missions principally aimed at measuring topography. Thus, using biomass mapping, we obtained new estimates of carbon loss from deforestation ahead of forthcoming space missions. Here, using a high-resolution map of forest loss and the synergy of radar and lidar to estimate the aboveground biomass density of forests, we found that deforestation in the 2000s in Latin America, one of the severely deforested regions, mainly occurred in forests with a significantly lower carbon stock density than typical mature forests. Deforestation areas with carbon stock densities lower than 20.0, 50.0, and 100.0 Mg C/ha accounted for 42.1%, 62.0%, and 83.3% of the entire deforested area, respectively. The average carbon stock density of lost forests was only 49.13 Mg C/ha, which challenges the current knowledge on the carbon stock density of lost forests (with a default value 100 Mg C/ha according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Tier 1 estimates, or approximately 112 Mg C/ha used in other studies). This is demonstrated over both the entire region and the footprints of the spaceborne lidar. Consequently, our estimate of carbon loss from deforestation in Latin America in the 2000s was 253.0 ± 21.5 Tg C/year, which was considerably less than existing remote-sensing-based estimates, namely 400–600 Tg C/year. This indicates that forests in Latin America were most likely not a net carbon source in the 2000s compared to established carbon sinks. In previous studies, considerable effort has been devoted to rectify the underestimation of carbon sinks; thus, the overestimation of carbon emissions should be given sufficient consideration in global carbon budgets. Our results also provide solid evidence for the necessity of renewing knowledge on the role of tropical forests in the global carbon budget in the future using observations from new space missions.

Objective This study aimed to explore the relationship between CD276 and clear cell renal carcinoma (ccRCC) and assess the diagnostic value of CD276 in ccRCC. Methods Expression levels of CD276 in ccRCC and para-cancer tissues were compared and analyzed retrospectively using data obtained from TCGA and GEO databases. The clinical data was analyzed prospectively. Immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR analyses were used to analyze the expression of CD276 at the mRNA and protein levels. These analyses compared the expression between ccRCC tissues and para-cancer tissues obtained from 70 patients with ccRCC. Next, ELISA was used to analyze peripheral blood samples from 70 patients with ccRCC and 72 healthy individuals, facilitating the differentiation of ccRCC patients from normal controls. Finally, we utilized the Kaplan-Meier method to generate ROC curves for assessing the diagnostic value of CD276 for ccRCC. Results Analysis of TCGA and GEO data revealed that the mRNA expression of CD276 was higher in ccRCC tissues than in para-cancer tissues ( P < .05). Clinical validation using IHC and RT-PCR confirmed that the expression of CD276 was higher in ccRCC tissues than in para-cancer tissues, both at the mRNA and protein levels ( P < .05). ELISA demonstrated that the expression of CD276 was higher in ccRCC patients than in normal individuals, and patients with a higher pathological grade showed higher expression of CD276 in the peripheral blood than those with a lower pathological grade ( P < .05). ROC curves drawn from the above three datasets demonstrated that CD276 had a high diagnostic value for ccRCC (AUC = .894, .795, .938, respectively). Conclusion The expression of CD276 was higher in ccRCC tissues and positively associated with the pathological grade. Therefore, CD276 may serve as a molecular biomarker for ccRCC prediction.

Objective This study intends to examine the anticipatory power of clinical and radiological parameters in detecting clinically significant prostate cancer in patients demonstrating Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System 3 lesions. Methods This was a retrospective study. The study included participation from 453 patients at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, sampled between September 2017 through August 2022. Each patient underwent a routine 12-core prostate biopsy followed by a 2 to 5 core fusion-targeted biopsy. We utilized both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to identify the parameters that have a correlation with clinically significant prostate cancer. The predictive ability of these parameters was assessed using the receiver operating characteristic curve, leading to the creation of a nomogram. Results Clinically significant prostate cancer was detected in 68 out of 453 patients with Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System 3 lesions (15.01%). Among Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System 3a and 3b patients, 4.78% (3.09% of the total) and 33.75% (11.92% of the total), respectively, had clinically significant prostate cancer. Systematic biopsy improved prostate cancer and clinically significant prostate cancer detection rates by 7.72% and 3.09%, respectively, compared to targeted biopsy. Without systematic biopsy, there would be an undetected rate of 15% for prostate cancer and 8.13% for clinically significant prostate cancer in Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System 3b patients. Several clinical parameters, including age, prostate-specific antigen density, lesion volume, apparent diffusion coefficient, and digital rectal examination, were statistically significant in the logistic regression analysis for clinically significant prostate cancer. The individual diagnostic accuracies of these parameters for clinically significant prostate cancer were 0.648, 0.645, 0.75, 0.763, and 0.7, respectively, but their combined accuracy improved to 0.866. A well-fit nomogram based on the identified risk factors was constructed (χ 2 = 10.254, P = .248). Conclusion The combination of age, prostate-specific antigen density, lesion volume, apparent diffusion coefficient, and digital rectal examination presented a higher diagnostic value for clinically significant prostate cancer than any single parameter in patients with Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System 3 lesions. Systematic biopsy proved crucial for biopsy-naive patients with Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System 3 lesions and should not be omitted.

Abstract The evolution of pathway enzymes enhances the biosynthesis of high‐value chemicals, crucial for pharmaceutical, and agrochemical applications. However, unpredictable evolutionary landscapes of pathway genes often hinder successful evolution. Here, the presence of complex epistasis is identifued within the representative naringenin biosynthetic pathway enzymes, hampering straightforward directed evolution. Subsequently, a biofoundry‐assisted strategy is developed for pathway bottlenecking and debottlenecking, enabling the parallel evolution of all pathway enzymes along a predictable evolutionary trajectory in six weeks. This study then utilizes a machine learning model, ProEnsemble, to further balance the pathway by optimizing the transcription of individual genes. The broad applicability of this strategy is demonstrated by constructing an Escherichia coli chassis with evolved and balanced pathway genes, resulting in 3.65 g L−1 naringenin. The optimized naringenin chassis also demonstrates enhanced production of other flavonoids. This approach can be readily adapted for any given number of enzymes in the specific metabolic pathway, paving the way for automated chassis construction in contemporary biofoundries.

Landscape freeze–thaw (F/T) state parameters are an integral part of research on terrestrial hydrological processes, vegetation growth dynamics, and terrestrial–atmospheric trace gas exchange. Therefore, the development of large-scale, continuous, and rapid F/T observation records is essential. This study proposes a scheme to effectively retrieve quasi-global daily soil F/T states from spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) observations. This method takes into account the GNSS-R surface reflectivity and its influence factor. Specifically, the method employed surface reflectivity derived from Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) data from 2018 to 2020, along with vegetation opacity data from Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) as input layers in random forests for F/T retrieval. This approach provides F/T results on a quasi-global scale, does not rely on continuous F/T observations, and employs the least ancillary data. To validate the retrieval results, SMAP F/T data over the same period and temperature data from more than 100 ground stations were also used as reference. Results showed that the F/T retrieval accuracy of CYGNSS was 95.5% and 82.0% with respect to the SMAP data and data from independent in situ stations, respectively. Given the high temporal coverage of the CYGNSS F/T results, the temporal coverage improvement is 23.3% compared with the actual SMAP observations on a daily scale. Furthermore, as gap-filling data complemented SMAP, CYGNSS data can effectively improve the SMAP F/T sample interval (accuracy improvement of 26.0%). More importantly, the F/T accuracy of the CYGNSS and SMAP combination based on monthly performance is 85.1%, i.e., 20.5% better than that of the existing SMAP daily F/T product. Overall, the quasi-global daily F/T results obtained from CYGNSS and SMAP measurements can complement existing databases with well-defined accuracy.

The dilemma concerning the trade-off between the strength and ductility of alloys has persistently been a significant problem in engineering applications. Conventional techniques such as grain refinement, severe plastic deformation, and precipitation strengthening usually increase strength at the expense of ductility. High entropy alloys with dual-phase structures, on the other hand, generally display excellent strength-ductility synergy. In this study, we attempted to mix pre-alloyed powders of two distinct phases (body-centered cubic - bcc and face-centered cubic - fcc) to fabricate AlCoCrFeMnNi HEAs with a dual-phase structure by selective laser melting. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of varying heat treatment temperatures (900 °C, 1000 °C, and 1100 °C) on its phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties. The results show that with an increase in the heat treatment temperature, the volume of the fcc phase increases gradually and the volume of the bcc phase decreases. The columnar structure in the fcc phase transforms into a cellular structure, and a spinodal decomposition is observed with the bcc phase. As the heat treatment temperature increases, the yield strength decreases while the elongation substantially increases, with the samples heat-treated at 1100 °C showing the best comprehensive properties (yield strength ∼700 MPa, tensile strength ∼950 MPa, and ∼15% ductility).

The cable-stiffened single-layer latticed shell is an innovative structural design that achieves a perfect balance between lightweight and stability by combining cables and a latticed shell. However, the study on dynamic response and failure mechanism of cable-stiffened single-layer latticed shell under seismic action is still lacking. Therefore, small-scale shaking table tests of two kinds of single-layer spherical latticed shells are carried out; the dynamic response and failure mode of the two shells under sine wave earthquake are investigated by using time history analysis. The conclusions show that the introduction of the prestressed cable plays an important role in improving the seismic performance of the single-layer latticed shell, and the cable-stiffened single-layer latticed shell has better load capacity and seismic performance under earthquake action than the ordinary single-layer latticed shell structure.

Ferroelectric materials, with their spontaneous electric polarization, are renewing research enthusiasm for their deployment in high-performance micro/nano energy harvesting devices such as triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Here, the introduction of ferroelectric materials into the triboelectric interface not only significantly enhances the energy harvesting efficiency, but also drives TENGs into the era of intelligence and integration. The primary objective of the following paper is to tackle the newest innovations in TENGs based on ferroelectric materials. For this purpose, we begin with discussing the fundamental idea and then introduce the current progress with TENGs that are built on the base of ferroelectric materials. Various strategies, such as surface engineering, either in the micro or nano scale, are discussed, along with the environmental factors. Although our focus is on the enhancement of energy harvesting efficiency and output power density by utilizing ferroelectric materials, we also highlight their incorporation in self-powered electronics and sensing systems, where we analyze the most favorable and currently accessible options in attaining device intelligence and multifunctionality. Finally, we present a detailed outlook on TENGs that are based on ferroelectric materials.

IntroductionThis study evaluated the effects of Isatis Leaf (ISL) on the growth performance, gastrointestinal tissue morphology, rumen and intestinal microbiota, rumen, serum and urine metabolites, and rumen epithelial tissue transcriptome of fattening sheep.MethodsTwelve 3.5-month-old healthy fattening sheep were randomly divided into two groups, each with 6 replicates, and fed with basal diet (CON) and basal diet supplemented with 80 g/kg ISL for 2.5 months. Gastrointestinal tract was collected for histological analysis, rumen fluid and feces were subjected to metagenomic analysis, rumen fluid, serum, and urine for metabolomics analysis, and rumen epithelial tissue for transcriptomics analysis.ResultsThe results showed that in the ISL group, the average daily gain and average daily feed intake of fattening sheep were significantly lower than those of the CON group (P < 0.05), and the rumen ammonia nitrogen level was significantly higher than that of the CON group (P < 0.01). The thickness of the reticulum and abomasum muscle layer was significantly increased (P < 0.05). At the genus level, the addition of ISL modified the composition of rumen and fecal microorganisms, and the relative abundance of Methanobrevibacter and Centipeda was significantly upregulated in rumen microorganisms, The relative abundance of Butyrivibrio, Saccharofermentans, Mogibacterium, and Pirellula was significantly downregulated (P < 0.05). In fecal microorganisms, the relative abundance of Papillibacter, Pseudoflavonifractor, Butyricicoccus, Anaerovorax, and Methanocorpusculum was significantly upregulated, while the relative abundance of Roseburia, Coprococcus, Clostridium XVIII, Butyrivibrio, Parasutterella, Macellibacteroides, and Porphyromonas was significantly downregulated (P < 0.05). There were 164, 107, and 77 different metabolites in the rumen, serum, and urine between the ISL and CON groups (P < 0.05). The differential metabolic pathways mainly included thiamine metabolism, niacin and nicotinamide metabolism, vitamin B6 metabolism, taurine and taurine metabolism, beta-Alanine metabolism and riboflavin metabolism. These metabolic pathways were mainly involved in the regulation of energy metabolism and immune function in fattening sheep. Transcriptome sequencing showed that differentially expressed genes were mainly enriched in cellular physiological processes, development, and immune regulation.ConclusionIn summary, the addition of ISL to the diet had the effect of increasing rumen ammonia nitrogen levels, regulating gastrointestinal microbiota, promoting body fat metabolism, and enhancing immunity in fattening sheep.

With the advent of very high-resolution (VHR) imaging satellites, it is possible to measure the heights of forest stands or even individual trees more accurately. However, the accurate geometric processing of VHR images depends on ground control points (GCPs). Collecting GCPs through fieldwork is time-consuming and labor-intensive, which presents great challenges for regional applications in remote or mountainous regions, particularly for international applications. This study proposes a promising approach that leverages GF-7 VHR stereoscopic images and Google Earth’s multi-temporal historical imagery to accurately extract forest heights without the need for fieldworks. Firstly, an algorithm is proposed to collect GCPs using Multi-temporal Averaging of historical imagery provided by Google Earth (GE), known as MAGE. Digital surface model (DSM) is then derived using GF-7 stereoscopic imagery and MAGE GCPs in Switzerland. Forest heights are finally extracted by subtracting ground surface elevations from GF-7 DSM. Results show that absolute coordinate errors of MAGE GCPs are less than 2.0 m. The root mean square error (RMSE) of forest heights extracted from GF-7 DSM, derived using the original geolocation model, is 12.3 m, and the determination coefficient (R2) of linear estimation model is 0.72. When the geolocation model is optimized using MAGE GCPs, the RMSE is reduced to 1.5 m and the R2 increases to 0.95. These results not only demonstrate the effectiveness of MAGE GCPs but, more importantly, also reveal the significance of precise geometric processing of VHR stereoscopic imagery in forest height estimations.

PurposeTo evaluate the ability of texture features for distinguishing between benign and malignant testicular masses, and furthermore, for identifying primary testicular lymphoma in malignant tumors and identifying seminoma in testicular germ cell tumors, respectively.MethodsWe retrospectively collected 77 patients with an abdominal and pelvic enhanced computed tomography (CT) examination and a histopathologically confirmed testicular mass from a single center. The ROI of each mass was split into two parts by the largest cross-sectional slice and deemed to be two samples. After all processing steps, three-dimensional texture features were extracted from unenhanced and contrast-enhanced CT images. Excellent reproducibility of texture features was defined as intra-class correlation coefficient ≥0.8 (ICC ≥0.8). All the groups were balanced via the synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) method. Dimension reduction was based on pearson correlation coefficient (PCC). Before model building, minimum-redundancy maximum-relevance (mRMR) selection and recursive feature elimination (RFE) were used for further feature selection. At last, three ML classifiers with the highest cross validation with 5-fold were selected: autoencoder (AE), support vector machine(SVM), linear discriminant analysis (LAD). Introduction: Cancer remains a significant health challenge, with chemotherapy being a critical treatment modality. However, traditional chemotherapy faces limitations due to non-specificity and toxicity. Nanogels, as advanced drug carriers, offer potential for targeted and controlled drug release, improving therapeutic efficacy and reducing side effects.Methods: This review summarizes the latest developments in nanogel-based chemotherapy drug delivery systems, focusing on the role of functional groups in drug loading and the design of smart hydrogels with controlled release mechanisms. We discuss the preparation methods of various nanogels based on different functional groups and their application in cancer treatment.Results: Nanogels composed of natural and synthetic polymers, such as chitosan, alginate, and polyacrylic acid, have been developed for chemotherapy drug delivery. Functional groups like carboxyl, disulfide, and hydroxyl groups play crucial roles in drug encapsulation and release. Smart hydrogels have been engineered to respond to tumor microenvironmental cues, such as pH, redox potential, temperature, and external stimuli like light and ultrasound, enabling targeted drug release.Discussion: The use of functional groups in nanogel preparation allows for the creation of multifunctional nanogels with high drug loading capacity, controllable release, and good targeting. These nanogels have shown promising results in preclinical studies, with enhanced antitumor effects and reduced systemic toxicity compared to traditional chemotherapy.Conclusion: The development of smart nanogels with functional group-mediated drug delivery and controlled release strategies represents a promising direction in cancer therapy. These systems offer the potential for improved patient outcomes by enhancing drug targeting and minimizing adverse effects. Further research is needed to optimize nanogel design, evaluate their safety and efficacy in clinical trials, and explore their potential for personalized medicine.

Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) is highly suitable for processing the hard-brittle materials like metallic glasses (MGs). However, the electro-thermal energy conversion involved in the WEDM process inevitably introduces some surface defects including bulges, discharge craters, and recast materials on the WEDMed MG surface, which significantly impedes its practical application. Here, an emerging automated polishing technology, laser polishing (LP), was performed in the nitrogen-rich environment to simultaneously improve the surface quality and hardness of the WEDMed Zr-based MG surface. The detailed effects of LP parameters on the surface roughness and morphology were systematically investigated. The morphology evolution and temperature distribution of the molten pool during LP were analyzed by simulation analysis. The experimental results indicated that after single LP of four representative WEDMed Zr-based MG surfaces using the optimized laser parameters, the surface roughness (Sa) was remarkably reduced from 1.27, 2.10, 3.49, and 4.58 μm to 0.09, 0.14, 0.17, and 0.21 μm, respectively, accompanied by an increase in surface hardness from 6.30 GPa to 7.39, 7.67, 8.51 and 8.99 GPa. This study demonstrated that LP could effectively achieve simultaneous enhancement of the quality and hardness of WEDMed MG surfaces, which would contribute to expanding the application prospects of MGs.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the most common primary myocardial diseases. However, to this day, it remains an enigmatic cardiovascular disease (CVD) characterized by ventricular dilatation, which leads to myocardial contractile dysfunction. It is the most common cause of chronic congestive heart failure and the most frequent indication for heart transplantation in young individuals. Genetics and various other factors play significant roles in the progression of dilated cardiomyopathy, and variants in more than 50 genes have been associated with the disease. However, the etiology of a large number of cases remains elusive. Numerous studies have been conducted on the genetic causes of dilated cardiomyopathy. These genetic studies suggest that mutations in genes for fibronectin, cytoskeletal proteins, and myosin in cardiomyocytes play a key role in the development of DCM. In this review, we provide a comprehensive description of the genetic basis, mechanisms, and research advances in genes that have been strongly associated with DCM based on evidence-based medicine. We also emphasize the important role of gene sequencing in therapy for potential early diagnosis and improved clinical management of DCM.

Background: The relationship between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and urological cancers has been identified in epidemiological and observational studies, while the causality remains uncertain. We examined whether IBD is causally associated with urological cancers in a Mendelian randomization (MR) study.Methods: The causal relationship between IBD, its main subtypes, and urological cancers was investigated using genome-wide association study data. To obtain more reliable conclusions, all outcomes were divided into training and validation sets. Eligible single-nucleotide polymorphisms were selected as instrumental variables based on MR analysis assumptions. The inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method was employed as the main method along with four other complementary methods.Results: In this two-sample MR study, no genetic evidence for the causal effect of IBD on urological cancers was found in either the training or validation sets using the IVW method. Similarly, we did not observe any significant association between Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis and urological cancers. The results of the other methods are in accordance with those obtained using the IVW method.Conclusion: In this study, we confirmed that IBD is not a causal genetic risk factor for urological cancer in a European population.

ABSTRACTBreakthrough infections by SARS-CoV-2 variants pose a global challenge to COVID-19 pandemic control, and the development of more effective vaccines of broad-spectrum protection is needed. In this study, we constructed pVAX1-based plasmids encoding receptor-binding domain (RBD) chimera of SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 variants, including pAD1002 (encoding RBDSARS/BA1), pAD1003 (encoding RBDSARS/Beta) and pAD131 (encoding RBDBA1/Beta). Plasmids pAD1002 and pAD131 were far more immunogenic than pAD1003 in terms of eliciting RBD-specific IgG when intramuscularly administered without electroporation. Furthermore, dissolvable microneedle array patches (MAP) greatly enhanced the immunogenicity of these DNA constructs in mice and rabbits. MAP laden with pAD1002 (MAP-1002) significantly outperformed inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus vaccine in inducing RBD-specific IFN-γ+ effector and memory T cells, and generated T lymphocytes of different homing patterns compared to that induced by electroporated DNA in mice. In consistence with the high titer neutralization results of MAP-1002 antisera against SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses, MAP-1002 protected human ACE2-transgenic mice from Omicron BA.1 challenge. Collectively, MAP-based DNA constructs encoding chimeric RBDs of SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 variants, as represented by MAP-1002, are potential COVID-19 vaccine candidates worthy further translational study.

Abstract Least squares reverse time migration (LSRTM) imaging is the one of the most accurate methods for migration imaging at present, and Polak–Ribiere–Polyak conjugate gradient (PRPCG) for LSRTM has the good numerical performance but weak convergence, so we construct an optimization factor to improve the iteration direction of the gradient, which can automatically generate a sufficient descent direction. The improved PRPCG (IPRPCG) can reduce the data residual values and speed up the iteration. And the illumination preconditioned (IP) operator is employed to IPRPCG-LSRTM which solves the problem of low resolution due to the insufficient iterative gradient information. In this paper, the experiments show that the imaging results of the proposed method (IPRPCG-IP-LSRTM) is improved greatly in detail characterization and events continuity, the iterative curve converged faster significantly, and the normalized data residual was reduced by 6.55% on average, which improved the accuracy of migration imaging effectively.

To avoid the formation of cracks and to improve the forming capability and performance of the AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy (HEA), equiatomic CoCrFeNiMn HEA was added into equiatomic AlCoCrFeNi HEA to form a novel AlCoCrFeMnNi HEA. Three different compositions were prepared by the selective laser melting (SLM) technique, and their formability, microstructure, and mechanical properties were analyzed. Results revealed that AlCoCrFeMnNi shows a composite-like dual-phase structure composed of a soft FCC phase and hard BCC (A2/B2) phase. With the decrease of Al, the SLM forming capability is improved. Besides, the volume fraction of the phase and the nano-hardness decreases with decreasing Al content.

Abstract Background Coronary artery ectasia is defined as a local or diffuse dilatation of the coronary artery more than 1.5 times the diameter of the adjacent normal segment. The etiology of coronary artery ectasia is diverse, and rarely complicated with immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-related disease). A limited number of cases have been reported, with insidious onset, slow progression but poor prognosis. Case presentation we report a patient with coronary artery ectasia combined with IgG4-related disease. He has been diagnosed with IgG4-related disease 5 years after his first percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Despite routine treatment with steroids, he develops a large coronary aneurysm and eventually died. Conclusions It is suggested that a thorough evaluation should be performed when coronary artery ectasia is diagnosed. The factors such as manifestations of coronary artery thickening, typical imaging features, other aortas involvement, increased serum IgG4 level, etc. should be considered for early diagnosis of key etiologies.

The increasing application of alkali-activated geopolymer materials generates more geopolymer waste, but the reuse of geopolymer waste has been given less consideration until now. The ground waste geopolymer powder (WGP) has the potential to be used as supplementary cementitious material. Therefore, this study examined the characteristics of cement-based materials with WGP as a substitute for particle cement. The mortar samples (70.7 × 70.7 × 70.7 mm) were prepared for strength and transport properties measurement. The findings indicated that WGP ground from various geopolymer wastes mainly contained C–(N)–A–S–H, mullite, SiO2 or CaCO3. Substituting WGP for partial cement negatively impacted the paste micro-structure and increased the percentages of harmful and more harmful pores. The addition of WGP reduced the mechanical strength and increased the transport properties, and the maximum capillary absorption coefficient of 30% WGP mixed mortar was 154.0% higher than that of reference mortar without WGP. When WGP replacing level was the same, the water absorption of mortar incorporating WGP ground from FA-based geopolymer waste was obviously lower than that of mortar with WGP ground from GGBS-based geopolymer waste, because WGP ground from FA-based geopolymer waste contained some un-treated FA particles which benefited filler effect and pozzolanic activity. The addition of active admixtures could enhance the performance of WGP blended mortar. Specifically, the mortar containing 20% WGP and 10% silica fume/metakaolin had similar strength and lower transport properties compared with reference mortar, and the properties of WGP blended mortar were improved with the mix of Nano-SiO2.

Coda waves are highly sensitive to changes in medium properties and can serve as a tool for structural health monitoring (SHM). However, high sensitivity also makes them susceptible to noise, leading to excessive dispersion of monitoring results. In this paper, a coda wave multi-feature extraction method is proposed, in which three parameters, the time shift, the time stretch, and the amplitude variation of the wave trains within the time window, are totally derived. These three parameters are each mapped to the temperature variations of concrete beams, and then combined together with their optimal weight coefficients to give a best-fitted temperature–multi-parameter relationship that has the smallest errors. Coda wave signals were collected from an ultrasonic experiment on concrete beams within an environmental temperature range of 14 °C~21 °C to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results indicate that the combination of multi-features derived from coda wave signals to quantify the medium temperature is feasible. Compared to the relationship established by a single parameter, the goodness-of-fit is improved. During identification, the method effectively reduces the dispersion of identification errors and mitigates the impact of noise interference on structural state assessment. Both the identification accuracy and stability are improved by more than 50%, and the order of magnitude of the identification accuracy is improved from 1 °C to 0.1 °C.

We report a case of an exophytic benign prostatic hyperplasia presenting as a polycystic pelvic mass. A 69-year-old man presented with an incidental finding of a pelvic mass of over 18 years. Digital rectal examination revealed a mass on the right anterior rectal wall 8 cm from the anal opening. His current prostate-specific antigen was 3.187 ng/mL. Enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an occupancy in the right pelvis. A laparoscopic resection of the pelvic tumor was performed and pathologists identified it as an exophytic benign prostatic hyperplasia nodule. No significant recurrence was found at the 6-month follow-up.

Abstract The remarkable control function over the functional material formation process enabled by droplet microfluidic emulsification approaches can lead to the efficient and one‐step encapsulation of active substances in microparticles, with the microparticle characteristics well regulated. In comparison to the conventional fabrication methods, droplet microfluidic technology can not only construct microparticles with various shapes, but also provide excellent templates, which enrich and expand the application fields of microparticles. For instance, intersection with disciplines in pharmacy, life sciences, and others, modifying the structure of microspheres and appending functional materials can be completed in the preparation of microparticles. The as‐prepared polymer particles have great potential in a wide range of applications for chemical analysis, heavy metal adsorption, and detection. This review systematically introduces the devices and basic principles of particle preparation using droplet microfluidic technology and discusses the research of functional microparticle formation with high monodispersity, involving a plethora of types including spherical, nonspherical, and Janus type, as well as core–shell, hole–shell, and controllable multicompartment particles. Moreover, this review paper also exhibits a critical analysis of the current status and existing challenges, and outlook of the future development in the emerging fields has been discussed.

Abstract Objective To develop and externally validate a novel nomogram in biopsy‐naïve patients with prostate‐specific antigen (PSA)

Abstract In this paper, the effect of geographical location on Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) observables is demonstrated for the first time. It is found that the observables corresponding to the same wind speed vary with geographic location regularly. Although latitude and longitude information is included in the conventional method, it cannot effectively reduce the errors caused by geographic differences due to the non-monotonic changes of observables with respect to latitude and longitude. Thus, an improved method for Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) wind speed retrieval that takes geographical differences into account is proposed. The sea surface is divided into different areas for independent wind speed retrieval, and the training set is resampled by considering high wind speed. To balance between the retrieval accuracies of high and low wind speeds, the results with the random training samples and the resampling samples are fused. Compared with the conventional method, in the range of 0–20 m/s, the improved method reduces the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of retrieved wind speeds from 1.52 to 1.34 m/s, and enhances the correlation coefficient from 0.86 to 0.90; while in the range of 20–30 m/s, the RMSE decreases from 8.07 to 4.06 m/s, and the correlation coefficient increases from 0.04 to 0.45. Interestingly, the SNR observations are moderately correlated with marine gravities, showing correlation coefficients of 0.5–0.6, which may provide a useful reference for marine gravity retrieval using GNSS-R in the future.

Context Paeonol (PAE) is the main phytochemical from Cortex Moutan. Its main pharmacological effects are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, but its cardioprotective effect is unclear.Objective The study investigates the effects and underlying mechanisms of PAE on transverse aortic constriction (TAC)-induced heart failure (HF) in mice.Materials and methods C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into five groups: sham, TAC, PAE10 (TAC + PAE 10 mg/kg), PAE20 (TAC + PAE 20 mg/kg) and PAE 50 (TAC + PAE 50 mg/kg). Paeonol was intragastrically administered to mice for 4 weeks. Mice were anaesthetized with pentobarbital sodium and underwent cardiac echocardiography using echocardiography system. Serum levels of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Myocardial apoptosis was detected with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labelling (TUNEL) staining. Haematoxylin–eosin (H&E) and Masson’s staining were used for histopathological evaluation. Western and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) were performed to detect levels of apoptosis and fibrosis-related proteins.Results Echocardiography showed PAE improved cardiac function (LVEF: TAC, 52.3±6.8%; PAE20, 65.8±3.6%; PAE50, 71.4±2.5%) and H&E staining showed PAE alleviated myocardial injury (TAC: 1170.3 ± 134.6 μm2; PAE50: 576.0 ± 53.5 μm2). Western and qRT-PCR results showed that PAE down-regulated the levels of ANP, BNP and α-MHC. In addition, TUNEL and western results showed PAE significantly inhibited apoptosis. Masson and western results showed PAE inhibited cardiac hypertrophy. Western results showed the ERK1/2/JNK pathway could be inhibited by PAE.Discussion and conclusions Paeonol regulates ERK1/2/JNK to improve cardiac function, which provides theoretical support for the extensive clinical treatment of HF.

Background: To evaluate the diagnostic effects of urine PCA-M (prostate cancer antigen-methylation) DNA level in patients with PSA from 4 to 20 ng/ml. Methods: We first explored the diagnostic value of PCAM (PRKY and TGIF2LY) based on prostate cancer samples from the TCGA database. Then ninety-five patients with PSA concentration of 4-20 ng/ml were collected as subjects. The level of urinary PCA-M DNA was detected by RT–PCR. The sensitivity and specificity of the diagnosis and the AUC were calculated and compared with f/t PSA, PSAD. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sodium salicylate (SS) on the preservation and metabolic regulation of sheep sperm. Under 4 °C low-temperature conditions, SS (at 10 µM, 20 µM, 30 µM, and 50 µM) was added to the semen diluent to detect sperm motility, plasma membrane, and acrosome integrity. Based on the selected optimal concentration of SS (20 µM), the effects of 20 µM of SS on sperms’ antioxidant capacity and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were evaluated, and metabolomics analysis was conducted. The results showed that on the 20th day of low-temperature storage, the sperm motility of the 20 µM SS group was 62.80%, and the activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.01). The content of Ca2+, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly lower than those of the control group (p < 0.01), and the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05); mitochondrial activity and the total cholesterol (TC) content were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.01). An ultrastructural examination showed that in the SS group, the sperm plasma membrane and acrosome were intact, the fibrous sheath and axoneme morphology of the outer dense fibers were normal, and the mitochondria were arranged neatly. In the control group, there was significant swelling of the sperm plasma membrane, rupture of the acrosome, and vacuolization of mitochondria. Using metabolomics analysis, 20 of the most significant differential metabolic markers were screened, mainly involving 6 metabolic pathways, with the amino acid biosynthesis pathway being the most abundant. In summary, 20 µM of SS significantly improved the preservation quality of sheep sperm under low-temperature conditions of 4 °C.

A 52-year-old Chinese woman was admitted to a cardiac intensive care unit (CCU) due to nausea, vomiting, and dyspnea, which began a day before her hospitalization. Metoprolol succinate and conventional treatment for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were initially administered to the patient based on electrocardiogram (ECG) findings and elevated cardiac troponin I (cTnI). However, the following day, she developed aggravated nausea, vomiting, fever, sweating, a flushed face, a rapid heart rate, and a significant rise in blood pressure. Furthermore, ultrasonic cardiography (UCG) displayed takotsubo-like changes; nevertheless, ECG indicated inconsistent cTnI peaks with extensive infarction. After coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) ruled out (AMI), and in conjunction with the uncommon findings, we strongly suspected that the patient had a secondary condition of pheochromocytoma-induced takotsubo cardiomyopathy (Pheo-TCM). In the meanwhile, the use of metoprolol succinate was promptly discontinued. This hypothesis was further supported by the subsequent plasma elevation of multiple catecholamines and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). After one month of treatment with high-dose Phenoxybenzamine in combination with metoprolol succinate, the patient met the criteria for surgical excision and successfully underwent the procedure. This case report demonstrated that pheochromocytoma could induce TCM and emphasized the significance of distinguishing it from AMI (in the context of beta-blocker usage and anticoagulant management).

At EUROCRYPT 2006, Kelsey and Kohno proposed the so-called chosen target forced-prefix (CTFP) preimage attack, where for any challenge prefix P, the attacker can generate a suffix S such that H(P∥S) = y for some hash value y published in advance by the attacker. Consequently, the attacker can pretend to predict some event represented by P she did not know before, and thus this type of attack is also known as the Nostradamus attack. At ASIACRYPT 2022, Benedikt et al. convert Kelsey et al.’s attack to a quantum one, reducing the time complexity from O(√n · 22n/3) to O( 3√n · 23n/7). CTFP preimage attack is less investigated in the literature than (second-)preimage and collision attacks and lacks dedicated methods. In this paper, we propose the first dedicated Nostradamus attack based on the meet-in-the-middle (MITM) attack, and the MITM Nostradamus attack could be up to quadratically accelerated in the quantum setting. According to the recent works on MITM preimage attacks on AES-like hashing, we build an automatic tool to search for optimal MITM Nostradamus attacks and model the tradeoff between the offline and online phases. We apply our method to AES-MMO and Whirlpool, and obtain the first dedicated attack on round-reduced version of these hash functions. Our method and automatic tool are applicable to other AES-like hashings.

Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (IHES) is a rare disease characterized by causeless persistent hypereosinophilia and eosinophilia-associated end-organ damage. Current treatment modalities don’t meet the needs due to adverse events of steroids as first-line therapy and the limited efficacy of second-line treatments, underscoring the need for new therapeutic strategies. Here we presented two cases of IHES with different clinical manifestations that were both refractory to corticosteroids. Patient #1 experienced rashes, cough, pneumonia, and steroid-induced side effects. Patient #2 had severe gastrointestinal symptoms attributed to hypereosinophilia. They both had high levels of serum IgE, didn’t respond well to second-line treatments of interferon-α (IFN-α) and imatinib, and Mepolizumab was not accessible. We then innovatively switched to Omalizumab, an anti-IgE monoclonal antibody approved for allergic asthma and chronic idiopathic urticaria. Patient #1 was treated with Omalizumab 600 mg per month for 20 months; his absolute eosinophil count (AEC) decreased significantly and has stabilized at around 1.0×109/L for 17 months, with complete relief from erythra and cough. Patient #2 recovered promptly from severe diarrhea with a sharp drop in AEC after 3 months of treatment with omalizumab at 600 mg per month. Therefore, we concluded that Omalizumab may be a seminal therapeutic strategy for IHES patients who are refractory to corticosteroids, whether as long-term management of AEC or as an urgent intervention to address severe symptoms caused by eosinophilia.

Abstract Background Biomedical named entity recognition (BioNER) is a basic and important task for biomedical text mining with the purpose of automatically recognizing and classifying biomedical entities. The performance of BioNER systems directly impacts downstream applications. Recently, deep neural networks, especially pre-trained language models, have made great progress for BioNER. However, because of the lack of high-quality and large-scale annotated data and relevant external knowledge, the capability of the BioNER system remains limited. Results In this paper, we propose a novel fully-shared multi-task learning model based on the pre-trained language model in biomedical domain, namely BioBERT, with a new attention module to integrate the auto-processed syntactic information for the BioNER task. We have conducted numerous experiments on seven benchmark BioNER datasets. The proposed best multi-task model obtains F1 score improvements of 1.03% on BC2GM, 0.91% on NCBI-disease, 0.81% on Linnaeus, 1.26% on JNLPBA, 0.82% on BC5CDR-Chemical, 0.87% on BC5CDR-Disease, and 1.10% on Species-800 compared to the single-task BioBERT model. Conclusion The results demonstrate our model outperforms previous studies on all datasets. Further analysis and case studies are also provided to prove the importance of the proposed attention module and fully-shared multi-task learning method used in our model.

BackgroundSpecies of the genus Monascus are economically important and widely used in the production of food colorants and monacolin K. However, they have also been known to produce the mycotoxin citrinin. Currently, taxonomic knowledge of this species at the genome level is insufficient.MethodsThis study presents genomic similarity analyses through the analysis of the average nucleic acid identity of the genomic sequence and the whole genome alignment. Subsequently, the study constructed a pangenome of Monascus by reannotating all the genomes and identifying a total of 9,539 orthologous gene families. Two phylogenetic trees were constructed based on 4,589 single copy orthologous protein sequences and all the 5,565 orthologous proteins, respectively. In addition, carbohydrate active enzymes, secretome, allergic proteins, as well as secondary metabolite gene clusters were compared among the included 15 Monascus strains.ResultsThe results clearly revealed a high homology between M. pilosus and M. ruber, and their distant relationship with M. purpureus. Accordingly, all the included 15 Monascus strains should be classified into two distinctly evolutionary clades, namely the M. purpureus clade and the M. pilosus-M. ruber clade. Moreover, gene ontology enrichment showed that the M. pilosus-M. ruber clade had more orthologous genes involved with environmental adaptation than the M. purpureus clade. Compared to Aspergillus oryzae, all the Monascus species had a substantial gene loss of carbohydrate active enzymes. Potential allergenic and fungal virulence factor proteins were also found in the secretome of Monascus. Furthermore, this study identified the pigment synthesis gene clusters present in all included genomes, but with multiple nonessential genes inserted in the gene cluster of M. pilosus and M. ruber compared to M. purpureus. The citrinin gene cluster was found to be intact and highly conserved only among M. purpureus genomes. The monacolin K gene cluster was found only in the genomes of M. pilosus and M. ruber, but the sequence was more conserved in M. ruber.ConclusionThis study provides a paradigm for phylogenetic analysis of the genus Monascus, and it is believed that this report will lead to a better understanding of these food microorganisms in terms of classification, metabolic differentiation, and safety.

Objectives To compare the prognostic values of three lymph node staging systems in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), including the number of positive lymph nodes (NPLN), lymph node ratio (LNR) and log odds of positive lymph nodes (LODDS).Design A retrospective cohort study using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database.Setting and participants 1904 patients with pathological N1 RCC, diagnosed from 2004 to 2015 and underwent nephrectomy combined with lymph node dissection, were identified from the SEER database.Primary outcome measure The primary outcome of this study was overall survival (OS). Restricted cubic spline functions and multivariable Cox regression analyses were employed to characterise the associations of OS with NPLN, LNR and LODDS, respectively.Results Data of 1904 eligible RCC patients were extracted from the SEER database. The mortality risks of RCC patients increased with the increasing of NPLN, LNR and LODDS. Abstract Background Emerging evidence has highlighted the critical roles of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in tumor development and progression. However, the biological functions and underlying mechanisms of DLEU1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remain unclear. Methods LncRNA expression in ESCC tissues was explored using lncRNA microarray datasets. The functional roles of DLEU1 in ESCC were demonstrated by a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments. RNA pull-down and immunoprecipitation assays were performed to demonstrate the potential mechanisms of DLEU1. Results In a screen for differentially expressed lncRNAs in ESCC, we determined that DLEU1 was one of the most overexpressed lncRNAs in ESCC tissues and that upregulated DLEU1 expression was associated with a worse prognosis. Functional assays showed that DLEU1 promoted tumor growth by inhibiting cell apoptosis. Mechanistically, DLEU1 could bind and stabilize DYNLL1 by interfering with RNF114-mediated ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. The DLEU1/DYNLL1 axis subsequently upregulated antiapoptotic BCL2 and promoted cell survival. Furthermore, DLEU1 upregulation was at least partly facilitated by promoter hypomethylation. Notably, targeting DLEU1 sensitized ESCC cells to cisplatin-induced death. Conclusions Our findings suggest that DLEU1-mediated stabilization of DYNLL1 is critical for cell survival and that the DLEU1/DYNLL1 axis may be a promising therapeutic target for ESCC.
