Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is a promising thin-film solar-cell material consisted of earth abundant and nontoxic elements. Yet, there exists a fundamental bottle neck that hinders the performance of the device due to complexed intrinsic defects properties and detrimental secondary phases. Recently, it was proven experimentally that Na and K in co-evaporation growth of CZTS can enlarge the grain size and suppress formation of ZnS secondary phase near surface, but the reasons are not well understood. We used first principle calculations to investigate the kinetic processes on CZTS (1-1-2-) surface involving Group I elements, including Na, K, and Cs, to demonstrate their surfactant effects. Both the structure of the reconstructed surfaces involving Group I elements and various diffusion paths of a Zn ad-atom in these reconstructed surfaces were explored. The advantages and concerns of the surfactant effects of Na, K, Cs, were systematically compared and discussed. Although Group I elements protect Cu sites on the subsurface layer, a disordered metastable configuration with a diffusion barrier of about 400meV was found. Therefore, a precise control of growth condition is essential to avoid the metastable phase. In addition, our studies provide a systematical design principle for surfactant effects during the growth.

By first principles method, we have determined the geometric configuration of K/Ba-codoped phenanthrene based on the formation energy calculations, and systematically investigated its electronic and magnetic properties. There are two bands crossing Fermi energy which mainly result from the LUMO+1 orbitals of two phenanthrene molecules in a unit cell, and the cylinder-like Fermi surface along the ${\Gamma}$-Z direction reflects the two-dimension character of metallic conduction of K/Ba-codoped phenanthrene. Compared to K-doped phenanthrene, K/Ba-codoping can donate more electrons to molecule to modify the electronic structure, while the intercalation of dopants does not result in the large distortion of molecule. (KBa)$_1$phenanthrene is a magnetic metal with the spin moment of 0.32 ${\mu}_B$ per each molecule, and unexpectedly, the spins gather in one edge of molecule rather than a uniform distribution on the whole molecule. Our results demonstrate that codoping of monovalent and bivalent metals is an effective approach to modulate the electronic properties of metal-doped hydrocarbons., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Introducing an isolated intermediate band (IB) into a wide band gap semiconductor can potentially improve the optical absorption of the material beyond the Shockley-Queisser limitation for solar cells. Here, we present a systematic study of the thermodynamic stability, electronic structures, and optical properties of transition metals (M = Ti, V, and Fe) doped CuAlSe2 for potential IB thin film solar cells, by adopting the first-principles calculation based on the hybrid functional method. We found from chemical potential analysis that for all dopants considered, the stable doped phase only exits when the Al atom is substituted. More importantly, with this substitution, the IB feature is determined by $3d$ electronic nature of M^{3+} ion, and the electronic configuration of 3d^1 can drive a optimum IB that possesses half-filled character and suitable subbandgap from valence band or conduction band. We further show that Ti-doped CuAlSe2 is the more promising candidate for IB materials since the resulted IB in it is half filled and extra absorption peaks occurs in the optical spectrum accompanied with a largely enhanced light absorption intensity. The result offers a understanding for IB induced by transition metals into CuAlSe2 and is significant to fabricate the related IB materials., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Based on the density functional theory with hybrid functional approach, we have studied the structural and thermodynamic stabilities of Cu2MSnX4 (M = Zn, Mg, and Ca; X = S and Se) alloy, and have further investigated the electronic and optical properties of stable Cu2MgSnS4 and Cu2MgSnSe4 phases. Thermal stability analysis indicates that Cu2MgSnS4 and Cu2MgSnSe4 are thermodynamically stable, while Cu2CaSnS4 and Cu2CaSnSe4 are unstable. The ground state configuration of the compound changes from kesterite into stannite structure when Zn atoms are substitued by larger Mg or Ca atoms. An energy separation between stannite and kesterite phase similar to that of CZTS is observed. Calculated electronic structures and optical properties suggest that Cu2MgSnS4 and Cu2MgSnSe4 can be efficient photovoltaic materials., Comment: 5 figures

To explore underlying mechanism for the superconducting phase in recent discovered aromatic hydrocarbons, we carry out the first-principles calculations on benzene, the basic and the simplest unit of the series and examine the structural and phase stability when doped by potassium, K$_x$C$_6$H$_6$ ($x=1,2,3$). We find that K$_2$C$_6$H$_6$ with the space group of $Pbca$ is the most stable phase with superconducting transition temperature around 6.2 K. Moreover, we argue that all existing hydrocarbons should have a unified superconducting phase in the same temperature range of 5$-$7 K, when doped by two potassium atoms. Our results indicate that the electron-phonon interaction is enough to account for the superconductivity of this unified superconducting phase., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A systemically theoretical study has been presented to explored the crystal structures and electronic characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as solid phenanthrene, picene, 1,2;8,9-dibenzopentacene, and 7-phenacenes, since these PAHs exhibited the superconductivity when potassium doping into. For tripotassium-doped phenanthrene and picene, we demonstrate the K atomic positions to fit the experimental lattice parameters, and analyze the distinction between the stablest configuration and the fitted experimental one. Based on the first-principles calculations, for the first time, we predict the possible crystal configurations of pristine and tripotassium-doped 1,2;8,9-dibenzopentacene and 7-phenacenes, respectively. For these four PAHs, the electronic structures after doping are investigated in details. The results show that the electronic characters near the Fermi level are high sensitive to structure. Because of the change of the benzene rings arrangement, the 1,2;8,9-dibenzopentacene exhibits visibly different band structures from other three PAHs. In these metallic PAHs, two bands cross the Fermi level which results in the complicated multiband feature of Fermi surfaces. Fascinatingly, we find that the electronic states of potassium contribute to the Fermi surfaces especially for K-3$d$ electrons, which improves a way to understand this superconductivity. As a result, we suggest that the rigid-band picture is invalidated due to the hybridization between K atoms and PAH molecules as well as the rearrangement and distortion of PAH molecules., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to some mistakes in the section of discussion
