We show that quantum advantage in distributed sensing can be achieved with noisy quantum networks. When using depolarized GHZ states as the probe, we derive a closed-form fidelity threshold to achieve advantage over the optimal local sensing strategy. The threshold indicates that while entanglement is needed for this quantum advantage, genuine multipartite entanglement is generally unnecessary. We further explore the impacts from imperfect local entanglement generation and local measurement constraint, and our results imply that the quantum advantage is more robust against quantum network imperfections than local operation errors. Finally, we demonstrate that the quantum advantage in distributed sensing can be achieved with a three-node quantum network using practical protocol stacks through simulations with SeQUeNCe, an open-source, customizable quantum network simulator., Comment: Updated references, added copyright statement, modified format

An entanglement purification protocol (EPP) aims to transform multiple noisy entangled states into a single entangled state with higher fidelity. In this work we consider EPPs that always yield an output fidelity no worse than each of the original noisy states, a property we call universality. We prove there is no $n$-to-1 EPP implementable by local operations and classical communication that is universal for all two-qubit entangled states, whereas such an EPP is possible using more general positive partial transpose-preserving (PPT) operations. Quantum repeater chains will form the backbone of future quantum networks that distribute entanglement between network nodes. Therefore, it is important to understand the entanglement distribution performance of quantum repeater chains, especially their throughput and latency. By using Markov chains to model the stochastic dynamics in quantum repeater chains, we offer analytical estimations for long-run throughput and on-demand latency of continuous entanglement distribution. We first study single-link entanglement generation using general multiheralded protocols. We then model entanglement distribution with entanglement swapping over two links, using either a single- or a double-heralded entanglement generation protocol. We also demonstrate how the two-link results offer insights into the performance of general $2^k$-link nested repeater chains. Our results enrich the quantitative understanding of quantum repeater network performance, especially the dependence on system parameters. The analytical formulae themselves are valuable reference resources for the quantum networking community. Atomic frequency comb (AFC) quantum memories are a promising technology for quantum repeater networks because they enable multi-mode, high-fidelity storage of photons with on-demand retrieval. The optimization of the retrieval efficiency of an AFC memory is important because it strongly impacts the entanglement generation rate in quantum networks. Despite initial theoretical analyses and recent experimental demonstrations, a rigorous proof of the universally optimal configuration for the highest AFC retrieval efficiency has not been presented. In this paper we offer a simple analytical proof which shows that the optimized square-tooth AFC provides the highest retrieval efficiency among all possible comb tooth shapes, under the physical constraint of maximal optical depth of an atomic ensemble. The optimality still holds even when the non-zero background absorption and the finite optical linewidth of atoms are considered. Our proof provides experimentalists with rigorous arguments how to create optimal AFC under realistic experimental conditions. Finally, we also identify other functional optimization problems where our proof technique is applicable, thus proving the optimality of the square function in more general scenarios.

We simulate the dynamics of systems with $N$ = 1-20 qubits coupled to a cavity in order to assess their potential for quantum metrology of a parameter in the open systems limit. The qubits and the cavity are both allowed to have losses and the system is studied under various coupling strength regimes. The focus is primarily on the coupling between the qubits using the quantum Fisher information as the measured parameter. Some results on estimating the qubit-cavity detuning parameter are also presented. We investigate the scaling of the uncertainty in the estimate of the qubit-cavity coupling with the number of qubits and for different initial states of the qubits that act as the quantum probe. As initial probe states, we consider Dicke states with varying excitation numbers, the GHZ state, and separable X-polarized states. It is shown that in the strong coupling regime, i.e., when the coupling between the qubits and the cavity is greater than the decay parameters of both the qubits and the cavity, Dicke states with a large excitation number can achieve the Heisenberg limit, with the precision scaling improving as the excitation number increases. A particularly intriguing finding of our study is that in the weak coupling regime, as well as in situations where either the qubit or cavity decay parameters exceed the coupling, the separable $X$-polarized state is the best in terms of scaling and is even able to achieve the Heisenberg limit in these lossy regimes for the range of $N$ considered.

Optically active solid-state spin qubits thrive as an appealing technology for quantum interconnect and quantum networking, owing to their atomic size, scalable creation, long-lived coherence, and ability to coherently interface with flying qubits. Trivalent erbium dopants in particular emerge as a compelling candidate with their telecom C band emission and shielded 4f intra-shell spin-optical transitions. However, prevailing top-down architecture for rare-earth qubits and devices has not allowed simultaneous long optical and spin coherence necessary for long-distance quantum networks. Here we demonstrate dual erbium telecom spin-photon interfaces in an epitaxial thin-film platform via wafer-scale bottom-up synthesis. Harnessing precise controls over the matrix purity, dopant placement, and symmetry unique to this platform, we simultaneously achieve millisecond erbium spin coherence time and $<$3 kilohertz optical dephasing rate in an inversion-symmetry protected site and realize both optical and microwave control in a fiber-integrated package for rapid scaling up. These results demonstrate a significant prospect for high-quality rare-earth qubits and quantum memories assembled using a bottom-up method and pave the way for the large-scale development of quantum light-matter interfaces for telecommunication quantum networks.

Interpreting regulatory documents or building codes into computer-processable formats is essential for the intelligent design and construction of buildings and infrastructures. Although automated rule interpretation (ARI) methods have been investigated for years, most of them highly depend on the early and manual filtering of interpretable clauses from a building code. While few of them considered machine interpretability, which represents the potential to be transformed into a computer-processable format, from both clause- and document-level. Therefore, this research aims to propose a novel approach to automatically evaluate and enhance the machine interpretability of single clause and building codes. First, a few categories are introduced to classify each clause in a building code considering the requirements for rule interpretation, and a dataset is developed for model training. Then, an efficient text classification model is developed based on a pretrained domain-specific language model and transfer learning techniques. Finally, a quantitative evaluation method is proposed to assess the overall interpretability of building codes. Experiments show that the proposed text classification algorithm outperforms the existing CNN- or RNN-based methods, improving the F1-score from 72.16% to 93.60%. It is also illustrated that the proposed classification method can enhance downstream ARI methods with an improvement of 4%. Furthermore, analyzing the results of more than 150 building codes in China showed that their average interpretability is 34.40%, which implies that it is still hard to fully transform the entire regulatory document into computer-processable formats. It is also argued that the interpretability of building codes should be further improved both from the human side and the machine side.

Quantum repeater networks that allow long-distance entanglement distribution will be the backbone of distributed quantum information processing. In this paper we explore entanglement distribution using quantum repeaters with optimized buffer time, equipped with noisy quantum memories and performing imperfect entanglement purification and swapping. We observe that increasing the number of memories on end nodes leads to a higher entanglement distribution rate per memory and higher probability of high-fidelity entanglement distribution, at least for the case with perfect operations. When imperfect operations are considered, however, we make the surprising observation that the per-memory entanglement rate decreases with increasing number of memories. Optical photons are powerful carriers of quantum information, which can be delivered in free space by satellites or in fibers on the ground over long distances. Entanglement of quantum states over long distances can empower quantum computing, quantum communications, and quantum sensing. Quantum optical memories can effectively store and manipulate quantum states, which makes them indispensable elements in future long-distance quantum networks. Over the past two decades, quantum optical memories with high fidelity, high efficiencies, long storage times, and promising multiplexing capabilities have been developed, especially at the single photon level. In this review, we introduce the working principles of commonly used quantum memory protocols and summarize the recent advances in quantum memory demonstrations. We also offer a vision for future quantum optical memory devices that may enable entanglement distribution over long distances.

Quantum entanglement is an essential resource for quantum networks. However, the generation of entanglement between physical devices at remote network nodes is a challenging task towards practical implementation of quantum networks. In this work, we use the open-source Simulator of QUantum Network Communication (SeQUeNCe), developed by our team, to simulate entanglement generation between two atomic frequency comb (AFC) absorptive quantum memories to be deployed on the Argonne-Chicago quantum network. We realize the representation of photonic quantum states within truncated Fock spaces in SeQUeNCe and build models for a spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) source, AFC absorptive quantum memories, and measurement devices with non-number-resolving photon detectors. Based on these developments, we observe varying fidelity with SPDC source mean photon number, and varying entanglement generation rate with both mean photon number and memory mode number. We also simulate tomographic reconstruction of the effective density matrix for the bipartite photonic states retrieved from quantum memories. Parametrically driving an optical cavity that simultaneously couples to an atomic ensemble quantum memory enables in-situ generation of multimode photon-memory entanglement. A high-rate bi-party photon-memory entanglement can be generated even after discarding one entangled optical mode. This protocol can be realized with existing technologies based on photonic resonators integrated with a rare-earth-ion doped quantum memory. The proposed scheme shows significant advantages in entanglement generation rates compared with prevailing quantum memory protocols and experiments, with theoretical Ebit rates of tens of MHz without fine-tuned operating conditions. Erbium-doped solids are prime candidates for optical quantum communication networks due to erbium's telecom C-band emission. A long-lived electron spin of erbium with millisecond coherence time is highly desirable for establishing entanglement between adjacent quantum repeater nodes while long-term storage of the entanglement could rely on transferring to erbium's second-long coherence nuclear spins. Here we report GHz-range electron spin transitions of $^{167}\mathrm{Er}^{3+}$ in yttrium oxide ($\mathrm{Y_2O_3}$) matrix with coherence times that are consistently longer than a millisecond. Instead of addressing field-specific Zero First-Order Zeeman transitions, we probe weakly mixed electron spins with the field orientation along the lower g-factors. Using pulsed electron spin resonance spectroscopy, we find paramagnetic impurities are the dominant source of decoherence, and by polarizing them we achieve a Hahn echo spin $\mathrm{T_2}$ up to 1.46 ms, and a coherence time up to 7.1 ms after dynamical decoupling. These coherence lifetimes are among the longest found in crystalline hosts especially those with nuclear spins. We further enhance the coherence time beyond conventional dynamical decoupling, using customized sequences to simultaneously mitigate spectral diffusion and Er-Er dipolar interactions. Despite nuclear and impurity spins in the host, this work shows that long-lived erbium spins comparable to non-nuclear spin hosts can be achieved. Our study not only establishes $^{167}\mathrm{Er}^{3+}$: $\mathrm{Y_2 O_3}$ as a significantly promising quantum memory platform but also provides a general guideline for engineering long-lived erbium spins in a variety of host materials for quantum technologies., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures
