Abstract The development of deep high-temperature oil and gas reservoirs gives rise to a rise in reservoir temperature along with the depth of the oil reservoir, thereby imposing higher requirements on the heat resistance of fracturing fluid. Guar gum fracturing fluid has difficulty tolerating temperatures exceeding 160 °C, thereby demanding the development of corresponding cross-linking agents, temperature stabilizers, and other additives to enhance the thermal stability of the fracturing system. Considering the distinctive characteristics of deep and ultra-deep reservoirs, such as extreme burial depth (exceeding 6000 m), ultra-high temperature (higher than 160 °C), and high fracturing pressure, an experimental modification of a guar gum fracturing fluid system was carried out, specifically tailored for ultra-high temperatures. The experiment identified and selected individual agents for ultra-high temperature fracturing fluids, including crosslinking agents, thermal stabilizers, flowback aids, and clay inhibitors. Through rigorous experimentation, these key agents for an ultra-high temperature fracturing fluid system have been successfully developed, including the optimal thickener GBA1-2, crosslinking agent BA1-1, anti-swelling agent FB-1, and gel breaker TS-1. The evaluation of diverse additive dosages has facilitated the development of an optimal guar fracturing fluid system, which exhibits outstanding high-temperature resistance while minimizing damage and friction. The outcomes of our experiments indicate that even after subjecting our ultra-high temperature fracturing fluid to 2 h of shearing at 170 s−1 at 180 °C, its viscosity remained above 200 mPa s—a distinct proof of its superior performance in withstanding high temperatures. This achievement represents a substantial progress in providing a suitable fracturing fluid system for the transformation and stimulation of ultra-deep and ultra-high temperature reservoirs, and also lays a solid foundation for further exploration and application in related fields in the future.

Thyroid diseases are increasingly prevalent, posing significant challenges to patients’ quality of life and placing substantial financial burdens on families and society. Despite these impacts, the underlying pathophysiology of many thyroid conditions remains poorly understood, complicating efforts in treatment, management, and prevention. Observational studies can identify associations between exposure variables and disease; however, they often struggle to account for confounding factors and reverse causation. Understanding disease occurrence, epidemiological trends, and clinical diagnosis, prevention, and treatment relies heavily on robust etiological research. Mendelian randomization, a method grounded in genetics and epidemiology, has been widely employed in studying the etiology of thyroid diseases, offering a solution to some of these challenges. This paper categorizes thyroid diseases into thyroid dysfunction and thyroid cancer, reviewing related Mendelian randomization studies. It further provides novel perspectives and approaches for investigating the mechanisms underlying thyroid diseases and designing intervention strategies.

Abstract The current extension limit prediction model for offshore extended-reach well (ERW) in mudstone does not consider the formation collapse, which poses a huge risk to offshore drilling construction. To address this problem, this paper presents new open-hole extension limit prediction model for ERW. By considering formation collapse, rate of penetration (ROP), and annular pressure loss, the extension limit models during normal drilling and tripping were derived. The sensitivity of geological and engineering factors was evaluated by analyzing limits for wells 1H and 2H. The research results showed that: (1) The extension limit increases with the ROP and formation collapse duration, but decreases with the increase in mud weight, plastic viscosity, and flow rate. (2) In ERWs, the mud flow rate has a significant impact on the extension limit than the plastic viscosity of mud fluid. However, mud weight has the least impact compared to the two. (3) Considering various parameters, the predicted extension limit of well 1H, when the mud weight is 1.16 g/cm3 [9.67 ppg], is 1593.28 m [5225.96 ft] less than the limit when the collapse period is not considered.

Rock failure can cause serious geological disasters, and the non-extensive statistical features of electric potential (EP) are expected to provide valuable information for disaster prediction. In this paper, the uniaxial compression experiments with EP monitoring were carried out on fine sandstone, marble and granite samples under four displacement rates. The Tsallis entropy q value of EPs is used to analyze the self-organization evolution of rock failure. Then the influence of displacement rate and rock type on q value are explored by mineral structure and fracture modes. A self-organized critical prediction method with q value is proposed. The results show that the probability density function (PDF) of EPs follows the q-Gaussian distribution. The displacement rate is positively correlated with q value. With the displacement rate increasing, the fracture mode changes, the damage degree intensifies, and the microcrack network becomes denser. The influence of rock type on q value is related to the burst intensity of energy release and the crack fracture mode. The q value of EPs can be used as an effective prediction index for rock failure like b value of acoustic emission (AE). The results provide useful reference and method for the monitoring and early warning of geological disasters.

Abstract Drilling engineers continue to grapple with the persistent challenge of maintaining wellbore stability. Throughout the drilling process, the wellbore pressure experiences fluctuations induced by various factors such as swab and surge pressure, leading to potential instability. This study employs a numerical approach, utilizing Abaqus software, to investigate the impact of swab and surge pressure on the natural fracture growth within the wellbore and the evolving pore pressure. A computational tool developed with MATLAB is then utilized to ascertain a safe operational mud window by assessing the time-dependent collapse and fracture pressures. The findings illustrated a notable increase in fracture width as a function of time in response to swab and surge pressure, with the most significant percentage increase reaching 69.92%. Notably, a 69.16% augmentation in fracture width is observed in the immediate vicinity of the wellbore following the application of swab and surge pressure. However, parameters such as fracture length, loss circulation rate, and pore fluid pressure exhibited marginal changes post-integration of swab and surge effects. The examination of the time-dependent wellbore stability after integration of swab and surge pressure indicated a narrowing of the initial mud window as a function of time, with a 14.33% increase in collapse pressure and a 13.80% decrease in fracture pressure. The numerical model verification against analytical solutions demonstrated good agreement, highlighting its potential utility in optimizing particle size for wellbore reinforcement and mitigating lost circulation through natural fracture sealing.

Abstract Objective Some correlations between thyroid disorders and insomnia have been found in previous studies; however, the causal relationship between them is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the causal relationship between insomnia and five thyroid disorders (hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer). Methods We assessed the causal relationship between insomnia and thyroid disorders using inverse variance weighted, weighted median, and Mendelian randomization (MR)‐Egger analyses in MR analyses and then used inverse MR analyses to assess the causal relationship between thyroid disorders and insomnia. Results MR analysis showed that insomnia did not increase the risk of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer. However, reverse MR analysis showed that thyroid cancer increased the risk of insomnia (OR = 1.01, 95%CI: 1.00–1.02, p = .01), and the other four thyroid disorders had no direct causal relationship with insomnia. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the results were robust and no pleiotropy or heterogeneity was detected. Conclusion This study did not find evidence of a bidirectional causal relationship between genetically predicted insomnia and hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, and thyroid nodules. However, we found that although insomnia does not increase the risk of thyroid cancer, thyroid cancer does increase the risk of insomnia.

Microseism, acoustic emission and electromagnetic radiation (M-A-E) data are usually used for predicting rockburst hazards. However, it is a great challenge to realize the prediction of M-A-E data. In this study, with the aid of a deep learning algorithm, a new method for the prediction of M-A-E data is proposed. In this method, an M-A-E data prediction model is built based on a variety of neural networks after analyzing numerous M-A-E data, and then the M-A-E data can be predicted. The predicted results are highly correlated with the real data collected in the field. Through field verification, the deep learning-based prediction method of M-A-E data provides quantitative prediction data for rockburst monitoring.

Effective monitoring of the structural health of combined coal-rock under complex geological conditions by pressure stimulated currents (PSCs) has great potential for the understanding of dynamic disasters in underground engineering. To reveal the effect of this way, the uniaxial compression experiments with PSC monitoring were conducted on three types of coal-rock combination samples with different strength combinations. The mechanism explanation of PSCs are investigated by resistivity test, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and computed tomography (CT) methods, and a PSC flow model based on progressive failure process is proposed. The influence of strength combinations on PSCs in the progressive failure process are emphasized. The results show the PSC responses between rock part, coal part and the two components are different, which are affected by multi-scale fracture characteristics and electrical properties. As the rock strength decreases, the progressive failure process changes obviously with the influence range of interface constraint effect decreasing, resulting in the different responses of PSC strength and direction in different parts to fracture behaviors. The PSC flow model is initially validated by the relationship between the accumulated charges of different parts. The results are expected to provide a new reference and method for mining design and roadway quality assessment.

This paper presents high performance hydrogen-terminated diamond MOSFETs fabricated on a (111)-oriented single-crystal diamond substrate. The diamond surface was passivated by a high-quality Al2O3 grown by ALD at 350°C as well as a secondary passivation layer Si3N4 deposited by PECVD. After passivation, a low ohmic contact resistance $R_{c}$ of $0.5 \Omega \cdot $ mm was obtained and the 2DHG sheet density was as high as $1.0\times 10\,\,^{\mathrm{ 13}}\,\,{\mathrm{ cm}}^{-2}$ with a corresponding mobility of $104 {\mathrm{ cm}}^{2} /\text{V}\cdot \text{s}$ . The fabricated diamond MOSFET with gate length of $0.5 ~\mu \text{m}$ showcased a high current density of 750 mA/mm, a low on-resistance of $24 \Omega \cdot $ mm, and a high off-state breakdown voltage of 117 V. Thanks to the high current density and low on-resistance, a record high output power density of 2.1 W/mm was achieved at 10 GHz with drain biased at a low voltage of −30 V. These results demonstrate that the output current and output power can be improved by using a (111)-oriented diamond, which is benefit for high-frequency and high-power RF devices.

In order to study the influence of loading rate on infrared radiation energy of siltstone during loading failure, and quantitatively analyze the change law of infrared radiation energy of siltstone during loading process, the infrared radiation experiments of siltstone under uniaxial compression at different loading rates were carried out. The results show that the peak stress decreases with the increase of loading rate. Under different loading rates, in difference mode, the maximum infrared radiation temperature ΔTmax has a good correspondence with the stress change, which can better reflect the damage of the sample, and the maximum temperature difference of ΔTmax increases by 1.0-1.7 ℃. During the main rupture, cumulative infrared radiant energy increment ΔQ increases slowly with time. There is a power function relationship between ΔQ and mechanical work. With the increase of mechanical work, the cumulative infrared radiation energy increment increases first and then increases slowly. The range of infrared precursor ratio of specimen damage under different loading rates is 0.02-0.285, and decreases with the loading rate.

Different coal failure impact types exhibit different damage statuses and failure modes, resulting in distinct signal characteristics of infrared radiation (IR) and acoustic emission (AE). This paper combines IR and AE monitoring methods to innovatively establish coal damage and failure precursor warning models and obtains the IR and AE precursor characteristics for different coal failure impact types. This research shows that there is a good correspondence between IR and AE timing and spatial distribution of different coal impact types. As the impact tendency increases, the intensity of IR and AE signals increases with coal failure, and the AE positioning points and IR high-temperature areas tend to concentrate. The coal body gradually changes from tensile failure to shear failure. The shear cracks in the failure stage of coal with no, weak, and strong impact are 39.9%, 50.9%, and 53.7%, respectively. The IR and AE instability precursor point of coal with no, weak, and strong impact occurred at 55.2%, 66.3%, and 93.4% of coal failure, respectively. After the IR and AE combined instability precursor point, the dissipated energy and combined damage variable increase rapidly, and the coal body will undergo instability and failure. The research results provide a theoretical basis for comprehensive monitoring of coal body failure and rock burst.

Salinized lacustrine shale (SLS) represents a frontier in the global quest for unconventional hydrocarbon resources. The impact of terrigenous input, which includes terrigenous organic matter (OM) and detrital matter, on the deposition and hydrocarbon potential of SLS is still controversial. Here, we examine this issue using the newly discovered SLS within the Paleogene Biyang Depression, employing a combination of organic petrographic and geochemical analyses. A high influx of terrigenous input (terrigenous OM and detrital matter) promotes the formation of SLS. On the one hand, terrigenous higher plants emerge as the primary source of OM in the SLS, as indicated by the dominance of terrigenous macerals (e.g., terrigenous liptinite) and the abundance of plant-derived biomarkers (e.g., tricyclic terpanes). Additionally, a portion of the OM may originate from bacteria. On the other hand, the rapid input of detrital matter improves the preservation of OM, resulting in the deposition of SLS with high total organic carbon (TOC) contents and low hydrogen index (HI) values. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of SLS deposition and provide guidance for regional hydrocarbon exploration.

Soil disinfestation has been widely used as an effective strategy to improve soil health and crop yield by suppression of soil-borne plant pathogens, but its effect on soil organic carbon (SOC), a crucial factor linked to climate change, remains unknown. A microcosm trial was conducted to evaluate microbial residue carbon (MRC) and its contribution to SOC under chemical soil disinfestation (CSD) with quicklime (QL) and chloropicrin (CP), as well as anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) with maize straw (MASD) and soybean straw (SASD). The SOC concentrations were increased by both CSD and ASD. Also, total SOC-normalized MRC concentration was enhanced, with a considerable increase in soil bacterial and fungal MRC, particularly evident under CP and SASD treatment. Due to broad-spectrum biocidal activities, decreased SOC-normalized microbial biomass carbon (MBC) was consistent with the reductions in bacterial and fungal phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), consequently increasing MRC accumulation under CSD. Similarly, ASD decreased fungal PLFAs while shifting bacterial PLFAs from aerobic to anaerobic taxa or from gram-negative to -positive taxa, both of which contributed to both MBC and MRC buildup. Collectively, the findings demonstrate that ASD can efficiently increase SOC concentration, with distinct mechanisms underlying MRC generation when compared to traditional CSD.

With the continuous increase of mining depth, coal and gas outburst poses a significant threat to mining safety. Conducting research on the mechanisms of coal and gas outbursts contributes to understanding the evolutionary process of such incidents, thus enabling accurate prediction and prevention of coal and gas outbursts during mining operations. This paper has developed a comprehensive visual experimental system that is specifically tailored to simulate diverse coal body conditions, ground stress and gas pressures. By monitoring and analyzing the real-time progression of coal fissures during the outburst process, we can obtain valuable insights into the evolution and mechanisms of coal and gas outbursts. Additionally, this study introduces a method to determine the critical threshold for predicting coal and gas outbursts, and the critical gas pressure threshold for Jiulishan Coal Mine (Jiaozuo City, Henan Province, China) is established at 0.6 MPa.

Abstract To investigate the effect of water on the mechanical properties and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of coal in the failure and deformation processes. Coal samples of different content were subjected to uniaxial compression tests and AE signals were monitored. The characteristics of the AE signals were further analyzed using fractal analysis. The results show that saturated coal samples have substantially reduced mechanical properties such as uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), dissipation energy, peak stress, and elastic modulus. Under loading, stress–strain curves are characterized by five distinct stages: (1) compaction; (2) linear elastic; (3) crack stable propagation; (4) crack accelerating propagation; and (5) post-peak and residual stages. Using phase-space theory, a novel Grassberger Procaccia (GP) algorithm was utilized to find the AE fractal characteristics of coal samples in different stages. It is significant to note that AE energy does not exhibit fractal characteristics in either the first or second stages. Contrary to the first two stages, the third stage showed obvious fractal characteristics. Fractal analysis of AE time sequences indicates that fractal dimension values change as stress increases, indicating the initiation of complex microcracks in coal. In the fourth stage, the fractal dimension rapidly declines as the strength reaches its limit, indicating the occurrence of macrocracks. However, fractal dimensions continued to decrease further or increased slightly in the fifth stage. Consequently, the coal begins to collapse, potentially resulting in a disaster and failure. It is, therefore, possible to accurately predict coal and rock dynamic failures and microcrack mechanisms by observing the subsequent sudden drop in the correlation dimension of the AE signals in response to different stages of loading.

The authors of this study numerically analyze the characteristics of impingement of supercooled large droplets on the surface of the rotating hood of an aircraft. We use the secondary development function of Fluent software to first compare the prevalent models of impinging supercooled large droplets and then develop a modified model to numerically simulate their characteristics of impingement on the surface of a rotating hood in order to examine the effects of the diameter of the droplets, the speed of rotation, and the corresponding velocity of inflow on them. The results showed that the efficiency of the loss of mass of the droplets caused by their splashing and rebounding was low on the top of the cone, while the efficiency of local droplet collection was the highest. The efficiency of mass loss quickly increased, while that of droplet collection sharply decreased in the area of transition from the top to the side. The efficiencies of mass loss and droplet collection were nearly constant on the side of the cone, while that of the latter decreased to zero on the tail of the cone. When the median volumetric diameter of the droplets was increased from 79 to 250 µm, the efficiency of the loss of mass increased by about 15% on the side of the cone, but that of local droplet collection changed only slightly. The efficiency of the loss of mass decreased by about 20%, while that of local droplet collection increased by about 2.6% on the top of the cone under this condition. When the speed of rotation was increased from 1200 to 4300 r/min and the corresponding velocity of inflow was increased from 30 to 140 m/s, the efficiency of mass loss increased by about 15% on the side of the cone, while that of local droplet collection changed little. The efficiency of mass loss on the top of the cone decreased by about 37.5%, while that of local droplet collection increased by about 8% in this case.

It is difficult to plug the fracture water channeling of a fractured low-permeability reservoir during water flooding by using the conventional acrylamide polymer gel due to its weak mechanical properties. For this problem, micron graphite powder is added to enhance the comprehensive properties of the acrylamide polymer gel, which can improve the plugging effect of fracture water channeling. The chemical principle of this process is that the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of the layered micron graphite powder can undergo physicochemical interactions with the amide groups of the polyacrylamide molecule chain. As a rigid structure, the graphite powder can support the flexible skeleton of the original polyacrylamide molecule chain. Through the synergy of the rigid and flexible structures, the viscoelasticity, thermal stability, tensile performance, and plugging ability of the new-type gel can be significantly enhanced. Compared with a single acrylamide gel, after adding 3000 mg/L of micrometer-sized graphite powder, the elastic modulus, the viscous modulus, the phase transition temperature, the breakthrough pressure gradient, the elongation at break, and the tensile stress of the acrylamide gel are all greatly improved. After adding the graphite powder to the polyacrylamide gel, the fracture water channeling can be effectively plugged. The characteristics of the networked water flow channel are obvious during the injected water break through the gel in the fracture. The breakthrough pressure of water flooding is high. The experimental results are an attempt to develop a new gel material for the water plugging of a fractured low-permeability reservoir.

Abstract During the deformation and fracture process, the acoustic emission (AE) signals can be produced for the of coal, rock and other solid materials, which revealing the damage localization evolution process. The effect of gas adsorption and pressure can change mechanical properties of coal mass and affect its damage development. Based on this, the experimental system for gas-bearing coal loading and AE monitoring was constructed, to analyze AE response characteristics under the joint action of loading stress and gas pressure on coal specimen. Afterwards, the damage localization evolution process of coal mass was studied with the moment tensor inversion method. Results showed that temporal response of AE signals was closely related to the damage degree and loading level of coal specimen, which could reveal its local severe damage and final failure characteristics. The spatial distribution and spread trend of AE fracture events inside coal specimen could be calculated through the moment tensor inversion method. It was basically consistent with the results of crack expansion on the specimen surface. The zones, where fracture events occurred intensively, gathered and spread in a continuous trend, were conductive to forming the macrocrack belt macroscopically. It could be regarded as the hazard zone with dynamic failure occurrence. Moreover, when the coal specimen faced the critical failure, the precursor characteristics of AE response appeared with the shear fracture events dominated markedly. The study results provide a new research idea for revealing the damaging localization evolution process under the coupling effect of stress and gas and lay the application foundation.

Joints are the weak plane structures in coal. The existence of joints leads to coal failure, with different fracture modes and energy evolution laws. In this paper, the energy evolution and bursting liability index of coal failure with different joint inclination angles (JIAs) are analyzed. The results show that with an increase in joint inclination angle (JIA), the total energy and elastic energy of coal first decrease and then increase and the dissipation energy decreases gradually. The existence of joints changes the bursting liability of coal. With an increase in the JIA, the uniaxial compressive strength (Rc) of coal first decreases and then increases, the dynamic failure time (DT) gradually decreases, and the impact energy velocity index (WST) and the impact energy index (KE) gradually increase. With an increase in the JIA, coal went from tensile failure to shear failure and tension shear mixed failure. After coal failure, the fractal dimension was between 1.7 and 2.4, decreasing first and then increasing; the larger the JIA and the degree of fragmentation, the more energy consumed at the moment of failure and the stronger the bursting liability of coal. The results have a guiding significance for the monitoring and prevention of rock bursts in coal mines.

Incipient fault detection in a hydraulic system is a challenge in the condition monitoring community. Existing research mainly monitors abnormal working conditions in hydraulic systems by separately detecting the key working parameter, which often causes a high miss warning rate for incipient faults due to the oversight of parameter dependence. A principal component analysis provides an effective method for incipient fault detection by taking the correlation of multiple parameters into consideration, but this technique assumes the systems are Gaussian-distributed, making it invalid for a dynamic non-Gaussian system. In this paper, we combine a canonical variable analysis (CVA) and adaptive kernel density estimation (AKDE) for the early fault detection of nonlinear dynamic hydraulic systems. The collected hydraulic system data set was used to construct the typical variable space, and the state space and residual space are divided to represent the characteristics of different correlations between the two variables, which are quantitatively described using Hotelling’s T2 and Q. In order to investigate the proper upper control limits, AKDE was utilised to estimate the underlying probability density functions of T2 and Q by taking the nonlinearity of the hydraulic system variables into consideration. The advantages of the proposed approach for incipient fault detection are illustrated via a marine power plant lubrication system.

The stress and gas pressure in deep coal seams are very high, and instability and failure rapidly and intensely occur. It is important to study the infrared precursor characteristics of gas-bearing coal instability and failure. In this paper, a self-developed stress-gas coupling failure infrared experimental system was used to analyse the infrared radiation temperature (IRT) and infrared thermal image precursor characteristics of gas-free coal and gas-bearing coal. The changes in the areas of the infrared temperature anomalous precursor regions and the effect of the gas on the infrared precursors were examined. The results show that high-temperature anomalous precursors arise mainly when the gas-free coal fails under loading, whereas the gas-bearing coal has high-temperature and low-temperature anomalous precursors. The area of the high-temperature anomalous precursor is approximately 30%–40% under gas-bearing coal unstable failure, which is lower than the 60%–70% of the gas-free coal. The area of the low-temperature abnormal precursor is approximately 3%–6%, which is higher than the 1%–2% of the gas-free coal. With increasing gas pressure, the area of the high-temperature anomalous precursor gradually decreases, and the area of the low-temperature anomalous precursor gradually increases. The high- and low-temperature anomalous precursors of gas-bearing coal are mainly caused by gas desorption, volume expansion, and thermal friction. The presence of gas inhibits the increase in IRT on the coal surface and increases the difficulty of infrared radiation (IR) monitoring and early warning for gas-bearing coal.

The finite horizon should be considered for products with a limited lifecycle. To introduce this possibility, multiple orders and partial backlogging policies are established under trade credit in an inventory model, where demand is a time-varying function and the backlogging rate is a decreasing function about a customer's waiting time. This paper presents lemmas and theories to determine optimal replenishment time and backlogging time to maximize total profit for the retailer. A search algorithm to solve the optimal order strategy is proven based on the theoretical results. Numerical examples are presented, and the optimal order strategy is obtained. A sensitivity analysis of the main parameters is carried out. The effects of total profit on the main parameter of trade credit are analyzed from both macroscopic and microscopic perspectives.

The use of polyenergy water pressure controlled blasting technology in tunnel construction is gradually being promoted, and the technology is often used in hard rock, and the mechanism of rock breaking in fractured sandstone strata is still lacking systematic research. The above mechanism was investigated using a combination of field experiments and ANSYS/LS-DYNA numerical simulation, and the results showed the following: (1) In the case of joint-hole blasting, the concentrating jet formed by the concentrating tube can effectively achieve controlled directional blasting of fractured sandstone. (2) The use of gun clay to seal the hole can effectively improve the stability of the blasting effect, reduce the waste of explosive gas, and effectively extend the duration of action. (3) The water bag enhances the blasting effect through the water wedge effect in the broken surrounding rock and also has the function of energy storage, which can effectively improve the blasting effect when combined with the gun clay. Abstract Background In female mammals, the initiation of puberty, coupling with the dramatically morphological changes in ovaries, indicates the sexual and follicular maturation. Previous studies have suggested that the disrupted DNA methylation results in the delayed puberty. However, to date, the changes in ovarian methylomes during pubertal transition have not been investigated. In this study, using gilts as a pubertal model, the genome-wide DNA methylation were profiled to explore their dynamics during pubertal transition across Pre-, In- and Post-puberty. Results During pubertal transition, the follicles underwent maturation and luteinization, coupled with the significant changes in the mRNA expression of DNMT1 and DNMT3a. DNA methylation levels of In-puberty were higher than that of Pre- and Post-puberty at the locations of genes and CpG islands (CGIs). Analysis of the DNA methylation changes identified 12,313, 20,960 and 17,694 differentially methylated CpGs (DMCs) for the comparisons of Pre- vs. In-, In vs. Post-, and Pre- vs. Post-puberty, respectively. Moreover, the CGIs, upstream and exonic regions showed a significant underrepresentation of DMCs, but the CGI shores, CGI shelves, intronic, downstream and intergenic regions showed a significant overrepresentation of DMCs. Furthermore, biological functions of these methylation changes enriched in PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, GnRH signaling pathway, and Insulin secretion, and the mRNA expressions of several genes of these signaling pathway, including MMP2, ESR1, GSK3B, FGF21, IGF1R, and TAC3, were significantly changed across Pre-, In- and Post-puberty in ovaries. Conclusions During pubertal transition in gilts, the DNA methylation changes of ovaries were likely to affect the transcription of genes related to PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, GnRH signaling pathway, and Insulin secretion. These observations can provide new insight into the epigenetic mechanism of follicular and sexual maturation during pubertal transition in mammals.

Climate change and rapid urbanization are two global processes that have significantly aggravated natural disasters, such as drought and flooding. Urbanization without resilient and sustainable planning and execution could lead to undesirable changes in landscapes and stormwater regulation capacity. These changes have exacerbated the effects of extreme climatic events with disastrous consequences in many cities worldwide. Unfortunately, the major storm in Zhengzhou, China on 20 July 2021 was one of these examples. This event provided a rare opportunity to study the key roles of green infrastructures (GI) in mitigating flooding risks in a major urban center after a devasting flood event. Using the data from high-resolution images collected via two satellites, a comprehensive study of the Jialu System in Greater Zhengzhou was conducted to systematically compare how far the river water had reached before and after the 20 July 2021 major storm in order to identify the main weak links in the city’s GI and stormwater management system. A flood inundation intensity index (FI) in the Upper (UJLR), Middle (MJLR), and Lower (LJLR) Regions of the Jialu River System was generated. Bivariate Moran’s I, a correlation coefficient between FI and landscape characteristics, was calculated and used to identify problem areas for future improvements. Our results showed that the MJLR had the severest flooding impacts. LJLR had the biggest change in how far the river water reached after flooding, ranging from 4.59 m to 706.28 m. In UJLR, the percentages of mine, crop land, and green space had the highest global bivariate Moran’s I correlation coefficients. In MJLR, the percentages of vacant land, impervious surfaces, and water body had the highest global bivariate Moran’s I correlation coefficients. In LJLR, the percentages of vacant land, water body, and crop land had the highest global bivariate Moran’s I correlation coefficients. The total percentages of both high landscape characteristics indices-high flood inundation intensity indices and low landscape characteristics indices-high flood inundation intensity indices areas are 12.96%, 13.47%, and 13.80% in UJLR, MJLR, and LJLR, respectively. These land cover composition types identified for each region can be treated as areas of primary focus. However, GeoDector Model (GDM) analyses showed that our eight variables of landscape characteristics were not independent. Hence, a more comprehensive approach integrating all eight variables is still necessary in future flood mitigation efforts.

Vision-based grasping plays an important role in the robot providing better services. It is still challenging under disturbed scenes, where the target object cannot be directly grasped constrained by the interferences from other objects. In this article, a robotic grasping approach with firstly moving the interference objects is proposed based on elliptical cone-based potential fields. Single-shot multibox detector (SSD) is adopted to detect objects, and considering the scene complexity, Euclidean cluster is also employed to obtain the objects without being trained by SSD. And then, we acquire the vertical projection of the point cloud for each object. Considering that different objects have different shapes with respective orientation, the vertical projection is executed along its major axis acquired by the principal component analysis. On this basis, the minimum projected envelope rectangle of each object is obtained. To construct continuous potential field functions, an elliptical-based functional representation is introduced due to the better matching degree of the ellipse with the envelope rectangle among continuous closed convex curves. Guided by the design principles, including continuity, same-eccentricity equivalence, and monotonicity, the potential fields based on elliptical cone are designed. The current interference object to be grasped generates an attractive field, whereas other objects correspond to repulsive ones, and their resultant field is used to solve the best placement of the current interference object. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by experiments.

In terms of coal’s stability and failure, soaking time and water content play a significant role in geotechnical engineering practice. To determine the soaking time effect on the mechanical behavior of coal samples and the response of AE (acoustic emission) signal throughout loading, the samples with different soaking times (0–120 hours (h)) were prepared and tested under uniaxial compression. AE signals were continuously monitored during loading to examine the AE characteristic response via the AEwin Express-8.0 system. The results revealed that the mechanical characteristics of the coal samples decreased with an increase in soaking time. When coal samples were subjected to uniaxial compression, AE events occurred due to the formation of the cracks, which further propagated to cause coal fracture. AE counts and the accumulative counts fluctuated with time and corresponded very well to the load. Therefore, AE counts and the trend of the accumulative counts of AE qualitatively explained the rupture of the coal under stress. In addition, the variation in trends of AE counts, AE accumulative counts, and load with time at various phases of all samples were obtained. It is concluded that AE counts increase suddenly during a slow increase phase and peak at the active increase phase. During the attenuation phase, the AE counts first decrease significantly with stress drop, but also a slight increase was observed due to the initiation of secondary cracks. These research results are of great significance as a precursor in coal and rock failure.

High power performance InAlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) as a candidate for high power and high frequency amplifiers has been demonstrated versus the conventional AlGaN/GaN HEMT by using the same device processes. Comparing with its conventional AlGaN/GaN counterpart, the InAlGaN/GaN device exhibits a much larger output current density of 1.94 A/mm due to its higher 2-D electron gas density of 2.0 × 1013 cm-2 by using a thin quaternary InAlGaN barrier layer, and almost twice as large as fT of 142 GHz and fmax of 203 GHz. Through measurements of large-signal characteristics at frequency of 34 GHz and biased at 10 V, the InAlGaN/GaN device shows a high output power density of 2.75 W/mm, which is about 87% increase in comparison with that of its AlGaN/GaN counterpart with an output power density of 1.47 W/mm.

Abstract Background α-Lactalbumin (a-LA), β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) and lactoferrin (LF) are of high nutritional value which have made ingredients of choice in the formulation of modern foods and beverages. There remains an urgent need to develop novel biosensing methods for quantification featuring reduced cost, improved sensitivity, selectivity and more rapid response, especially for simultaneous detection of multiple whey proteins. Results A novel visualized microarray method was developed for the determination of a-LA, β-LG and LF in milk samples without the need for complex or time-consuming pre-treatment steps. The measurement principle was based on the competitive immunological reaction and silver enhancement technique. In this case, a visible array dots as the detectable signals were further amplified and developed by the silver enhancement reagents. The microarray could be assayed by the microarray scanner. The detection limits (S/N = 3) were estimated to be 40 ng/mL (α-LA), 50 ng/mL (β-LG), 30 ng/mL (LF) (n = 6). Conclusions The method could be used to simultaneously analyze the whey protein contents of various raw milk samples and ultra-high temperature treated (UHT) milk samples including skimmed milk and high calcium milk. The analytical results were in good agreement with that of the high performance liquid chromatography. The presented visualized microarray has showed its advantages such as high-throughput, specificity, sensitivity and cost-effective for analysis of various milk samples.

It has been widely recognized that the early or delayed puberty appears to display harmful effects on adult health outcomes. During the timing of puberty, pituitaries responds to the hypothalamus and then introduce the following response of ovaries in hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. DNA methylation has been recently suggested to regulate the onset of puberty in female mammals. However, to date, the changes of DNA methylation in pituitaries have not been investigated during pubertal transition. In this study, using gilts as the pubertal model, the genome-scale DNA methylation of pituitaries was profiled and compared across Pre-, In- and Post-puberty by using the reduced representation bisulfite sequencing. We found that average methylation levels of each genomic feature in Post- were lower than Pre- and In-pubertal stage in CpG context, but they were higher in In- than that in Pre- and Post-pubertal stage in CpH (where H = A, T, or C) context. The methylation patterns of CpHs were more dynamic than that of CpGs at the location of high CpG content, low CpG content promoter genes, and differently genomic CGIs. Furthermore, the differently genomic CGIs were likely to show in a similar manner in CpG context but display in a stage-specific manner in the CpH context across the Pre-, In- and Post-pubertal stage. Among these pubertal stages, 5 kb upstream regions of the transcription start sites were protected from both CpG and CpH methylation changes. 12.65% of detected CpGs were identified as the differentially methylated CpGs, regarding 4301 genes which were involved in the fundamental functions of pituitaries. 0.35% of detected CpHs were identified as differentially methylated CpHs, regarding 3691 genes which were involved in the biological functions of releasing gonadotropin hormones. These observations and analyses would provide valuable insights into epigenetic mechanism of the initiation of puberty in pituitary level.

In female mammals, the abnormal apoptosis of ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) impairs follicular development and causes reproductive dysfunction. Many studies have indicated that the FGFR1 gene of the PI3K signaling pathway and the p65 subunit of the transcription factor NF-κB may regulate the proliferation and apoptosis of GCs involved in follicular development. However, little is known about whether p65 regulates the transcription of FGFR1, as well as the biological effects of p65 and FGFR1 on the survival of GCs and follicular development. In porcine follicles and GCs, we found that p65 and FGFR1 were exclusively expressed in the GCs of follicles, and the mRNA and protein levels of p65 and FGFR1 significantly increased from small to large follicles. Both p65 and FGFR1 were found to activate the PI3K signaling pathway, and the expressions of proliferation markers (PCNA and MKI67) and the anti-apoptotic gene BCL2 were significantly increased by p65 and FGFR1. Furthermore, both p65 and FGFR1 were observed to promote cell proliferation and inhibit the cell apoptosis of GCs, and p65 was confirmed to bind at the −348/−338 region of FGFR1 to positively regulate its transcription. Moreover, p65 was further found to enhance the pro-proliferation and anti-apoptotic effects of FGFR1. Taken together, p65 may target the −348/−338 region of FGFR1, promote the transcription of FGFR1, and enhance the pro-proliferation effect and anti-apoptotic effect of FGFR1 to facilitate the growth of follicles. This study will provide useful information for further investigations on the p65-mediated-FGFR1 signaling pathway during folliculogenesis in mammals.

By designing a state observer, a new type of synchronization named complex modified projective synchronization is investigated in a class of nonlinear fractional-order complex chaotic systems. Combining stability results of the fractional-order systems and the pole placement method, this paper proves the stability of fractional-order error systems and realizes complex modified projective synchronization. This method is so effective that it can be applied in engineering. Additionally, the proposed synchronization strategy is suitable for all fractional-order chaotic systems, including fractional-order hyper-chaotic systems. Finally, two numerical examples are studied to show the correctness of this new synchronization strategy.

Previous studies have strongly recommended that KISS-1 metastasis suppressor (KISS1) plays an essential gatekeeper of the initiation of reproductive maturation in mammals. However, KISS1 has been recently reported to highly express in ovarian granulosa cells (GCs). But the biological functionalities of KISS1 on cell apoptosis, cell cycle, and synthesis of estradiol-17β (E2) have not been explored in GCs. In this study, using porcine GCs as a cellular model, the overexpression plasmid of KISS1 was built to explore the biological effects of KISS1 on the PI3K signaling pathway, estrogen signaling pathway, cell apoptosis, cell cycle, and E2 secretion. We found that mRNA of KISS1 highly expressed in the ovary and significantly increased from immature to mature follicles in gilts. Overexpression of KISS1 could significantly increase the mRNA expression of PIK3CG, PIK3C1, and PDK1, and significantly decreased the mRNA levels of FOXO3, TSC2, and BAD of PI3K signaling pathway. Furthermore, results of the flow cytometry showed that overexpression of KISS1 significantly inhibited the apoptosis of GCs and decreased the percentage of GCs at G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle. Additionally, overexpression of KISS1 could increase the mRNA levels of Star, CYP17, 3B-HSD, 17B-HSD of estrogen synthesis signaling pathway, significantly increase the concentration of E2 in the supernatant of the cultured GCs, and up-regulate the mRNA expression levels of ESR1 and ESR2. These results suggested that KISS1 might suppress cell apoptosis through activating the PI3K signaling pathway and stimulate synthesis of E2 via boosting the estrogen synthesis signaling pathway. This study would be of great interests for exploring the biological functionalities of KISS1 in the folliculogenesis and sex steroid production of the ovaries in mammals.

This paper presents a dual-band microstrip filter with left-handed characteristics, featuring high selectivity and miniaturization. The design achieves negative permittivity and permeability by integrating H-shaped complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) within a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). To enhance out-of-band rejection performance, a defected ground structure (DGS) is introduced. By applying the Half Mode SIW (HMSIW) principle, the equivalent magnetic walls of the SIW are cut, resulting in a 50% size reduction. Dual-frequency characteristics are realized using a symmetrical H-shaped CSRR, with the filter operating in the Sub-6G frequency band. Experimental results demonstrate that the filter exhibits good selectivity and low insertion loss at 3.5 GHz and 4.8 GHz. Tuning of the second frequency band is achieved by adjusting the coupling distance between the CSRR and metal via. This work has significant application potential in the fields of wireless communication and RF technology.
