The diversity, co-occurrence patterns, and assembly processes of microbial eukaryotes (0.2–20 µm) in Antarctic freshwater lakes are not well understood, despite their wide distribution and ecological importance. This study used Illumina high-throughput sequencing to investigate the microbial eukaryotic communities of five freshwater lakes on the Fildes Peninsula over three summer seasons. A total of 28 phyla were detected, with phytoplankton occupying the highest percentage of sequences (accounting for up to 98 %). The dominant taxa consisted of Chrysophyta, Chlorophyta, and Cryptophyta. The species richness (113–268) and Shannon index (1.70–3.50) varied among the lakes, with higher values recorded in Lake Chang Hu and Lake Kitec and the lowest value obtained for Lake Yue Ya. There were significant differences between the microbial eukaryotic communities of the lakes, with spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the relative abundance of the dominant taxa (P). Environmental variables explained about 39 % of the variation in community structures, with water temperature and phosphate identified as the driving factors (P). Network analysis revealed comprehensive co-occurrence relationships (positive correlation 82 % vs. negative correlation 18 %). The neutral community model revealed that neutral processes explained more than 55 % of the community variation. Stochastic processes (e.g. homogenizing dispersal and undominated processes) predominated in community assembly over the deterministic processes. These findings demonstrate the diversity of the microbial eukaryotic communities in the freshwater lakes of the Fildes Peninsula and have important implications for understanding the community assembly in these ecosystems.

During the 3rd Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition cruise in the summer of 2008, nutrients (NO3, NO2, SiO32 , and PO43 ) and dissolved oxygen were measured in the western Arctic Ocean, to derive the vertical distribution of nutrient tracers and its relationship to water structure and biogeochemical processes. The nutrient data show that surface waters had the lowest NO3/PO43 (mean of 0.5) and SiO32 /PO3 (mean of 2.8) values in the water column, suggesting an excess of phosphate. Winter Bering Shelf water (wBSW) had high Si* (16.7 µmol/L; Si*=[Si(OH)4]-[NO3]) with negative N* (−11.7 µmol/L; N*=[PO43 ]-16[PO43 ]+3.5 µmol/L) in the water column, indicating nitrate deficiency. The warm Atlantic layer had positive N* (0.8 µmol/L) and negative Si* (−5.4 µmol/L) compared with Pacific source water. The vertical distribution of nutrients indicates that wBSW can be characterized by N* minimum and Si* maximum. In contrast, minima of Si* and SiO32 /PO43 below 200 m indicate the distribution of Atlantic warm water.

Snow in Antarctica is a vast terrestrial ecosystem and plays a key role that has likely been underestimated. Algae are the key primary producers on the coloured snow surface, and they support a microbial community that includes bacteria, fungi and/or invertebrates. We analysed microbial communities that co-exist in green and red snow samples from the Fildes Peninsula by Illumina sequencing, Antarctica, as well as the influence of snow physicochemical properties. We detected several species of green algae from Chlorophyta and Ochrophyta as well as fungi and cercozoans. The three red snow samples (RS1, RS2 and RS3) were represented by mixed eukaryotic microalgae from Sanguina, Chloromonas and Trebouxiophyceae. The green snow sample GS5 exhibited lake-to-snow colonisation composed of Trebouxiophyceae, Ulvophyceae and Chrysophyta representatives. The red snow RS4, predominantly by Chlainomonas sp. from slush layers, which presented a different microbial community from the other red snow samples, was sampled close to green snow sample GS5 near Lake Changhu. The environmental parameters were involved into descriptive differences among these coloured snow samples. The two snow algae Chlainomonas and Sanguina were firstly reported from Antarctica, which indicates distinguished snow algae colonisation that is closely connected with the melting snow at the lake ice-cover. Meanwhile, consistent with previous bacterial community profiles, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were mostly represented in all the coloured snow samples. Polaromonas (Betaproteobacteria) was the most abundant genus, and its presence was reportedly essential for the sustained growth of snow algae. Flavobacterium from Bacteroidetes was the most frequently detected genera in GS5, but the Sphingobacteriia with only a few reads were an interestingly minority in GS5. The snow-algae-associated bacteria were closely related to psychrophilic strains or sequences from low-temperature environments. Many possible factors influence on the coloured snow microbial communities would require attentions, to help understand their occurrence mechanisms, their biogeographic distributions in polar regions.

Primary production on the Western Indus continental shelf has been linked to the large quantities of nutrients delivered to the shelf by the Indus River. Multiple geochemical tracers and biomarker records, including stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), molar carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, the branched and isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) index, and glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT), have been analyzed from the Indus-23AP sediment core recovered from the northern Arabian Sea. Our records show evidence of a mixture of marine and terrestrially derived organic matter (OM) during the last 14,000 years, as indicated by the C/N ratio, δ13C, δ15N, and the BIT index. The three sterol biomarkers (brassicasterol, dinosterol, and cholesterol) show concurrent enrichments during the last 3 millennia reflecting increased phytoplankton abundance because of increased Indus river discharge of nutrients during the summer monsoon. GDGT crenarchaeol enrichment is related to the BIT index. The TEX86-derived sea surface temperature (SST) record is shifted toward the summer season because Crenarchaeota are more abundant and active during periods of high primary production. SSTs indicate a long-term warming trend during the Holocene related to increasing winter insolation in the low latitudes northern Hemisphere.

The comprehensive profiles of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the Antarctic water environments and their potential health risks are not well understood. The present study characterized the bacterial community compositions and ARG profiles of freshwater (11 samples) and seawater (28 samples) around the Fildes Region (an ice-free area in Antarctica) using a shotgun metagenomic sequencing approach for the first time. There were significant differences in the compositions of the bacterial community and ARG profiles between freshwater and seawater. In the 39 water samples, 114 ARG subtypes belonging to 15 ARG types were detectable. In freshwater, the dominant ARGs were related to multidrug and rifamycin resistance. In seawater, the dominant ARGs were related to peptide, multidrug, and beta-lactam resistance. To ascertain the saying “Everything is everywhere, but the environment selects”, it was imperative to find out the main factor influencing bacterioplankton composition at genus level of Kongsfjorden where was influenced both by glacier melting water and Atlantic water. Thus, bacterioplankton diversity was investigated using pyrosequencing. In addition, nutrients, chlorophyll a, in situ temperature and salinity were measured. There were seventeen of 33 identified genera with relative abundance > 0.1%. Redundancy analysis showed that 73.02% of bacterioplankton community variance could be explained by environmental parameters. Furthermore, most of the abundant genera demonstrated significant correlation with environment parameters revealed by correlation analysis. Moreover, phosphate, nitrate and Chl a concentration, and the abundance of top nine identified genera varied with water mass significantly as shown by analysis of variance. Our results supported the notion that environmental factors, especially water mass had significant effect on bacterioplankton distribution at genus level. Considering the high sensitivity to environmental change and low error rate in identification, bacterioplankton at genus level could be potential bio-markers for monitoring environmental changes.

The organic matter (OM) preserved in Arctic Ocean sediments is of great importance to the global carbon budget. However, works that apply multiple proxies to determine the distribution and concentration of organic carbon (OC) in the surface sediments of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas remain limited. Here a multiproxy approach based on bulk OM parameters and the branched vs. isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) index was used to investigate the distribution and sources of OM in the surface sediments of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas. Binary and ternary mixing models were applied to trace the contribution of different OC sources to the total OC in the study area. The δ13C values of the sediments provided by the binary model showed that the proportion of terrestrial OC fell in the range of 27.4%−79.8% (46.2% on average). The BIT index returned the lowest fraction (4.8%−27.3%, 12.0% on average). The ternary mixing model was employed to determine the plant-, soil-, and marine-derived fractions of the total OM. The ternary model showed that 11.5%±6.3%, 31.4%±9.5%, and 57.1%±12.4% of OM in the sediment of the study area was derived from soil, plants, and marine sources, respectively. The differences in OM composition between the west and east sides of the Chukchi Sea were controlled by OM inputs from key water masses (i.e., Anadyr Water and Alaska Coastal Water), river discharge, and the nutrient supply from the Pacific inflow that supports marine productivity.

High-resolution palaeo-climate records documenting sea ice extent over the Industrial Era is an important source of information to fully understand the emergence and magnitude of on-going changes and better predict future climate evolution of the Arctic Ocean. In this study, source-specific highly branched isoprenoids (HBIs) and phytosterols were measured in multicores retrieved from the Chukchi shelf region to document the history of seasonal sea ice in this area since the beginning of the Industrial Era. HBIs at the end of the 19th century (AD 1865-1875) point to a retreat of the sea ice edge and rapid return to colder conditions. After 1920-1930 AD, proxy records indicate a steady sea ice retreat reaching a maximum in the 1990s. Sympagic biomarker IP25 and HBI II were generally low during negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) (i.e., before 1920s) while higher values were found during positive AO, in particular in the 1990s. Our data also suggest a role of remote ocean circulation features.Among existing indices for semi-quantitative of sea ice concentration, the H-Print % sea ice index seems to generally perform less than so-called phytoplankton marker-IP25 (PIP25) index to estimate spring sea ice concentration (SpSIC). However, PBIP25-derived SpSIC better reproduce decadal scale variability and the long-term sea ice decline since the mid-20th century. Our results also highlight the lack of data for improving the PIP25 and their relationship to sea ice.

International audience; Over the last decades, the western Arctic Ocean has undergone unprecedented environmental changes. However, long-term in situ observations of marine phytoplankton are still rare and therefore insufficient to fully characterize their evolutionary trends. This study investigated the diatom fluxes and composition in sediment trap material collected from the Northwind Ridge, western Arctic Ocean, from August 2008 to September 2009. Our data showed that Chaetoceros resting spores were the predominant species, accounting for >40% of the diatom composition. The sea ice diatom group, which included Fossula arctica, Fragilariopsis cylindrus and F. oceanica, dominated the rest of the assemblage throughout the observation period. While diatom fluxes in winter were extremely low, higher flux values were found in summer, and summer 2009 flux values were twice as high as those in 2008. The high total mass and diatom fluxes in summer 2009 were attributed to the combined effect of a weakened Beaufort Gyre, a strengthened Pacific water inflow (PWI) and the distribution pattern of the sea ice. The higher levels of coastal diatoms and terrigenous proxies in summer 2009 were consistent with the intensified PWI. Sea ice diatoms and sea ice biomarker IP25 fluxes were both high during the sea ice melting season and were significantly correlated with each other (r2 = 0.64, p < 0.01). Our data also suggest that sea ice diatoms are prone to selective dissolution in the water column and sediments, implying the existence of biases in diatom assemblage data and subsequently in paleoceanographic reconstructions.

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a class of the emerging pollutants that pose a potential environmental threat to marine ecosystems. In this study, a simple analytical method using ultrasound-assisted extraction combined with gas purges microsyringe extraction (GP-MSE) coupled with GC-MS was utilized for the reliable and rapid determination of PAEs in different types of marine sediment. The analytical results showed that the method exhibited excellent reproducibility, linear responses, and detection limits, which verified the suitability of the method for the determination of PAEs in marine sediment. This approach requires minimal reagents, solvents, and sample pretreatment procedures as well as a short analysis time; thus, procedural blanks can be kept to a minimum. This method was demonstrated to be a highly efficient and sensitive quantitative analytical method for the simple detection of PAEs in marine sediment.

Eutrophication, mainly caused by the oversupply of nitrate (NO3−) and phosphate, has become a serious environmental problem in Xiangshan Bay (east China), but the sources of the nitrate are poorly understood. In this study, the estuarine distributions of dual stable isotopes (δ15N and δ18O) of NO3− measured in May 2012 were used in combination with concurrent measurements of salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and phosphate) to investigate NO3− sources and the processes that control NO3− distributions within the bay. In the lower bay, high concentrations of NO3− (up to 60.6 μmol L−1), an N/P ratio of 52, and low values of nitrate δ15N (δ15NNO3 = 5.7‰–6.7‰) and δ18O (δ18ONO3 = 1.8‰–3.5‰) indicate that NO3− in this area was likely from the Changjiang and Qiantangjiang rivers as well as local nitrification-associated inputs. In the upper bay, constituent concentrations and high values of δ15NNO3 (up to 8.8‰) and δ18ONO3 (up to 6.8‰) suggest that NO3− distributions here were controlled mainly by the mixing of coastal and fresh waters, phytoplankton assimilation, and inputs of riverine NO3−, possibly derived from manure and sewage. Spatial variations of Δ(15,18), the nitrate δ15N-to-δ18O anomaly, is possibly resulted from the different water residence times across the bay, which could in turn lead to different degrees of nitrification or variable amounts of NO3− from atmospheric deposition.

Nutrient and phytoplankton pigment data were collected during summer cruises in 2008–2014 to examine how the Beaufort Gyre (BG) affected regional differences in nutrient stocks and the phytoplankton community. The results showed a gradual decrease in nutrient concentrations and increasing depth of the chlorophyll maxima toward the center of the gyre. A horizontal map of nitrate at a depth of 50 m indicated nitrogen deficiency in the gyre compared with that in the surroundings. Biogeochemical model simulations suggested that an increased freshwater convergence, driven by the strengthened BG and sea ice retreat, was primarily responsible for the decrease in nutrient stocks. In the BG zone, the contribution of diatoms to the phytoplankton community decreased, accompanied by the increased contribution of small flagellates. The current state of the BG under anticyclonic winds negatively affected the diatom biomass and biological carbon pump. The possible rotation of wind regimes from anticyclonic to cyclonic might relieve the nitrogen deficiency for phytoplankton growth in the western Arctic Ocean.

Seasonal meltwater input creates a thin freshen layer in surface seawater under ice, which largely shifts the algae assemblages. Our recent observation of photosynthetic pigments in the high Arctic showed that ice bottom and 5 m of seawater under ice contained relatively high concentration of fucoxanthin, while chlorophyll b and lutein were the major diagnostic pigments in ice-water interface and 0 m of seawater under ice. Additionally, a notable change of dominant phytoplankton occurred in the top 5 m of seawater under ice, from chlorophytes-dominated at surface to diatoms-dominated at 5 m depth, which might attribute to the sharp salinity gradient (salinity from 12.5 to 28.1) in the surface seawater under ice. Our results imply that phytoplankton community in surface layer under ice would become more chlorophytes in the future warming Arctic Ocean.

Nutrients and photosynthesis pigments were investigated in the western Arctic Ocean during the 3rd Chinese Arctic Research Expedition Cruise in summer 2008. The study area was divided into five provinces using the Kmeans clustering method based on the physical and chemical characteristics of the sea water, and to discuss the distribution of the phytoplankton community structure in these provinces. CHEMTAX software was performed using HPLC pigments to estimate the contributions of eight algal classes to the total chlorophyll a (TChl a). The results showed that on the Chukchi Shelf, the Pacific Ocean inflow mainly controlled the Chl a biomass and phytoplankton communities by nutrient concentrations. The high nutrient Anadyr Water and Bering Shelf Water (AnW and BSW) controlled region have high Chl a levels and the diatom dominated community structure. In contrast, in the region occupied by low-nutrient like Alaska Coastal Water (ACW), the Chl a biomass was low, with pico- and nano-phytoplankton as dominated species, such as prasinophytes, chrysophytes and cryptophytes. However, over the off-shelf, the ice cover condition which would affect the physical and nutrient concentrations of the water masses, in consequence had a greater impact on the phytoplankton community structure. Diatom dominated in ice cover region and its contribution to Chl a biomass was up to 75%. In the region close to the Mendeleev Abyssal Plain (MAP), controlled by sea-ice melt water with relatively high salinity (MW-HS), higher nutrient and Chl a concentrations were found and the phytoplankton was dominated by pico- and nano-algae, while the diatom abundance reduced to 33%. In the southern Canada Basin, an ice-free basin (IfB) with the lowest nutrient concentrations and most freshened surface water, low Chl a biomass was a consequence of low nutrients. The ice retreating and a prolonged period of open ocean may not be beneficial to the carbon export efficiency due to reducing the Chl a biomass or intriguing smaller size algae growth.

The content of organic carbon (OC) normalized to the specific surface area (SSA) of sediment is widely used to trace variations in OC loading (OC/SSA). This study presents observations of OC/SSA of surface sediments collected in the Chukchi Sea, a typical Arctic marginal sea. Shelf sediments exhibit much higher OC/SSA values than slope sediments in the study area. Compared with OC/SSA values reported from the East Siberian Shelf and Mackenzie River, the slope sediments possess lower OC loading. This abrupt decrease in OC/SSA is mostly related to the lower primary production on slope as well as possible oxidization processes. The results of linear regression analysis between OC and SSA indicate a sedimentary source rock for the OC in the Chukchi Sea sediments. Moreover, shelf sediments with low SSA possess a larger rock OC fraction than slope sediments do. The dataset of the present study enables a more thorough understanding of regional OC cycling in the Chukchi Sea.

A total of 29 sediment samples were collected from the East China Sea (ECS), with the Yangtze River estuary and the Zhejiang costal area. These sediment samples were analyzed for 6 phthalate esters (PAEs) and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): the ΣPAEs and ΣPAHs concentrations ranged between 1649.5 and 8451.5 ng g−1 (mean = 3446.3 ng g−1) and 57.5–364.5 ng g−1 (mean = 166.2 ng g−1), respectively. Overall, the PAEs and PAHs concentrations gradually decreasing in the offshore and southward directions: their compositions and distributions suggest they could have mainly derived from the Yangtze River. In particular, their distribution was influenced by the sources’ proximity, hydrodynamics, and sediment geochemistry (i.e., TOC content and grain size). A classical two-end member model was utilized to estimate the fraction of terrestrial organic carbon in the sediments of the ECS. When the sediment was dominated by terrestrial-derived organic matter (OM), the concentrations of PAEs and PAHs were significantly correlated to the TOC content and gran size of the sediments. In contrast, the poor correlation of TOC content and grain size with PAEs in those sediments dominated by marine-derived OM, implied that the distribution of PAEs in the ECS was mainly related to land-based inputs, (especially to that of the Yangtze River). Regardless of the origin of most of the OM contained in the sediments, we observed positive correlations between the TOC content, and grain size of those containing PAHs. These results suggest that the distribution of PAHs in the ECS was not only related to the Yangtze River input, but also to the geochemical characteristics of the sediments.

Kongsfjorden is known for its characteristic multi-layer water mass formed by the convergence of freshwaters from nearby glaciers and rivers and saline water from the Atlantic and Arctic. The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water column of Kongsfjorden was investigated and their potential sources were analyzed. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs in the surface seawater and river water were in the range of 33.4−79.8 ng/L (mean 48.5 ng/L) and 2.3−201.4 ng/L (mean 126.1 ng/L), respectively. Horizontally, PAHs were mainly concentrated around river estuaries and the glacier front in the dissolved phase. Vertically, the PAHs in the particulate phase followed surface-enrichment and depth-depletion patterns in most stations, with the maximum concentration found at 50 m depth in the central area of Kongsfjorden. The compositions of PAHs in seawater and rivers were similar, with two-ring and tricyclic PAHs comprising the majority of the dissolved and particulate phases. PAHs found in Kongsfjorden waters appeared to be derived from multiple sources such as petroleum and coal combustion. PAHs in the bay mouth of Kongsfjorden were mainly introduced by the West Spitsbergen Current and the Arctic waters, while in the inner bay, atmospheric deposition and local sources were the major contributors. The distribution of PAHs was mainly attributed to the suspended particulate distribution.

International audience; Sediment traps were deployed at 870 m water-depth from August 2008 to September 2009 at station DM in the Chukchi Sea (western Arctic Ocean) in an area covered by sea ice in winter to determine seasonal fluxes of HBIs and phytoplankton sterols in order to improve our understanding of sea ice proxies. HBI-III fluxes and P III IP 25 are for the first time documented in the Arctic Ocean to evaluate their significance for paleoclimate reconstructions. Highest mass fluxes were found from mid-July 2009 to September 2009 contrasting with low values during all other months (i.e., December 2008 to early July 2009). Indeed, during the winter months IP 25 was not detected but increased by a factor of nine over summer 2009 reflecting sea ice algae and pelagic phytoplankton production at the sea ice edge. High HBIs and low sterol fluxes at the end of summer 2008 are consistent with the complete melting of sea ice and post-bloom conditions. We found that HBI-III was more abundant in the early stage of sea ice retreat that characterizes the marginal ice zone. These sea ice biomarkers were also measured in surface sediments across a wide range of sea ice cover in the western Arctic region. Higher IP 25 values were found in the southeastern Chukchi Sea and decreased westwards where sea ice conditions are less severe. Stronger positive linear relationship were found between the sea ice proxy indexes P B IP 25 and P III IP 25 and spring sea ice concentrations than with IP 25 in agreement with earlier findings from other Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.

Photosynthesis pigments and size-fractionated chlorophyll a were determined during the Chinese CHINARE Arctic cruise in summer 2010, to study the phytoplankton community in response to different Pacific water masses in the Eastern Chukchi Shelf (ECS). In the summer, the phytoplankton biomass was high with large diatoms dominated in the shelf, which might in favor to well-stratified water conditions and adequate nutrient supply of Pacific waters. However, nitrate-poor Alaska Coastal Water (ACW) altered the phytoplankton community structure in the east part of Chukchi shelf, as dinoflagellate and chrysophyte biomass significantly increased. It was shown that in ACW-influenced area, the Chl a concentration was an order of magnitude lower (0.41 µg/dm 3 in averaged) compared to that in the entire ECS, with the community mainly consisting of nano- and pico-phytoplankton. The result indicated that the diatom-dominated shelf was greatly impact by the spreading pathway of ACW. Thus, the future enhancement of ACW and subsequent ecological impact need further concern.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a very important role in the dynamics of different biogeochemical processes in the global marine carbon cycle. Seasonal variations of DOM were investigated using dissolved organic carbon (DOC), absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence excitation emission matrix–parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) in Niushan Island in the East China Sea, off southeast Zhejiang, in winter, spring, and summer 2017. A strong positive correlation between temperature and salinity was observed in winter, whereas negative correlations were obtained in spring and summer. The results suggest that the water in the study area originates from the Changjiang River water coinciding with the direction of winds in winter. On the other hand, the Taiwan Strait water flows northward on the eastern part of the study area in summer and spring. The DOC concentration showed significant seasonal variations and was much lower in summer than in winter, but largely independent of the temperature, degree of absorption and intensity of the fluorescence component. Three tryptophan-like components (C1, C2 and C4) and one humic-like component were identified by the PARAFAC model in winter, while two tryptophan-like components (C1 and C2) and two humic-like components were illustrated in summer. The seasonal variations of DOC concentrations and intensities of the fluorescence components in the study area from winter to summer suggest that the waters in this area were influenced mainly by mixing water of the Changjiang River and the Taiwan Strait. A strongly linear relationship was found between the nutrient and the fluorescence intensities of different components in winter, reflecting the profound impacts of the dynamics of DOM on nutrient cycling.

In this study, a comparison was made between the Changjiang Estuary and the Hanghzou Bay, in terms of the sources and diagenesis of the sedimentary organic matter (OM). To achieve this purpose, surface sediments from the estuary and bay were analyzed for lignin-derived phenols, stable carbon isotope and TOC/TN (total organic carbon/total nitrogen) molar ratio. The signal of land-derived OM decreased, and the vanillic acid to vanillin ratio, (Ad/Al)v, increased with increasing distance from the Changjiang Estuary and the Hangzhou Bay. These results corresponded with the contribution of the terrigenous OM from the rivers to the coastal zone, and the predominance of marine OM farther offshore, and that the land-derived OM underwent decomposition during transport along the estuary and bay. It should be noted that besides the Qiantang River, Hangzhou Bay is also receiving more than half of its materials from Changjiang Estuary, which flows into the Hangzhou Bay at the north, and leaves via the southern part of the bay. This important aspect of the hydrological cycle in Hangzhou Bay corresponded to higher Λ (total lignin in mg/100 mg OC), higher TOC and C/N ratios and more elevated (Ad/Al)v and (Ad/Al)s values in the bay than the Changjiang Estuary, thus, rendering the bay as a site for the accumulation and rapid cycling of terrigenous OM.

The Arctic Ocean plays a key role in the global carbon cycle and budget. This semi-closed ocean and its vast and shallow marginal shelf seas surrounded by widespread tundra makes it a unique area to study the carbon source, sink and budget, with consideration of land-ocean interaction and land and ocean as a whole. Over the last three decades because of global warming, sea ice has rapidly decreased. This has induced air-ice-sea-land multi-geosphere interaction that has greatly affected the carbon source and sink in the arctic areas. Such rapid change has not only led to the release of methane and carbon dioxide in degraded permafrost but has also altered the physical, biological and microbial carbon pumps. This process may be attributed to changes of freshwater input, water mixing and circulation, terrestrial fluvial transport, and nutrient supply to the Arctic Ocean. In this review paper, we discuss how global warming and rapid sea ice retreat affects the Arctic carbon sink and source, with a focus on the biological pump, terrestrial carbon input, and carbon burial in the Arctic Ocean.

Surface sediments from the Changjiang River (Yangtze River) Estuary, Hangzhou Bay, and their adjacent waters were analyzed for their grain size distribution, organic carbon (OC) concentration, and stable carbon isotope composition (δ 13C). Based on this analysis, about 36 surface sediment samples were selected from various environments and separated into sand (>0.250 mm, 0.125–0.250 mm, 0.063–0.125 mm) and silt (0.025–0.063 mm) fractions by wet-sieving fractionation methods, and further into silt- (0.004–0.025 mm) and clay-sized (

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are among the world’s most prevalent public health problems yet preventable by dietary iodine supplements. To better understand the biogeochemical behavior of iodine and to explore safer and more efficient ways of iodine supplementation as alternatives to iodized salt, we studied the behavior of iodine as it is absorbed, accumulated and released by plants. Using Chinese cabbage as a model system and the 125I tracing technique, we established that plants uptake exogenous iodine from soil, most of which are transported to the stem and leaf tissue. The level of absorption of iodine by plants is dependent on the iodine concentration in soil, as well as the soil types that have different iodine-adsorption capacity. The leaching experiment showed that the remainder soil content of iodine after leaching is determined by the iodine-adsorption ability of the soil and the pH of the leaching solution, but not the volume of leaching solution. Iodine in soil and plants can also be released to the air via vaporization in a concentration-dependent manner. This study provides a scientific basis for developing new methods to prevent IDD through iodized vegetable production.

Combining numerical diagnosis from atmospheric science with biogeochemical methods, a model of the potential correlation of monsoons with red tide emergence in the East China Sea is constructed. The model is designed based on an in-depth investigation of the time-space relationship of aerosol and red tide events in the East China Sea from 2005 to 2006, and a continuous monitoring of atmospheric particulates at two stations. The study shows that every red tide event investigated has a close relationship with aerosols coming from the northwest (wind direction in winter) along with subsidence flow. The elemental abundance of total suspended particulate in Hangzhou and Tiantai is different from that of soil background levels, indicating atmospheric particulates there are brought in by winter winds. There is a significant correlation between the content of iron and phosphorous in atmospheric particulates, which mainly exist in binding materials between particulates. In addition, the confined absorption of iron and phosphorous by red tides is related to the intensity of sunlight. These results provide new information regarding the mechanism for the high frequency of red tides in the East China Sea. The results also provide a scientific basis for establishing new pathways for pre-warning and forecasting of red tide disasters.

In this study, lignin-derived phenols were used to determine the sources and distribution of sedimentary organic matter along the northern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean. The lignin parameter syringyl/vanillyl (S/V) and cinnamyl/vanillyl (C/V) ratios are used to indicate vegetation sources; and the ratios of vanillic acid/vanillin, (Ad/Al)v and syringic acid/syringaldehyde, (Ad/Al)s are used as indicators of lignin diagenesis. Results showed the predominance of woody gymnosperm signal at the easternmost location in the northern Bering Sea, a mixture of refractory non-woody angiosperm and fresher gymnosperm tissues in the Chukchi Sea, and signal of fresher woody gymnosperm tissues in the northernmost locations in the Chukchi Sea. The lignin materials showed gradual increase in decomposition stage during transport along the northern Bering Sea. Hydrodynamic sorting process, which is the retention of coarser materials nearshore and transportation of finer particles farther offshore, most probably occurred along the east coast of the northern Bering Sea. In Chukchi Sea, the non-woody angiosperm tissues could have originated from the Canadian Arctic and gymnosperm tissues could be from the Russian Arctic side. The fresher materials in the northernmost Chukchi Sea could have been transported here via the ice-rafting process. Detection of fresh lignin materials and the occurrence of lignin decomposition mean that this region could be sensitive to the impact of climate change.

OBJECTIVE To assess the association of polymorphisms of TNF-alpha gene (rs1799724, rs1800630, rs1799964 and rs769178) and IL-13 gene (rs2158177 and rs1295687) with susceptibility to asthma among ethnic Chinese in Qingdao region. METHODS For 400 asthma patients and 200 healthy subjects, above polymorphisms were detected with a SNaPshot method. RESULTS For rs2158177, the frequency of genotype of GG in the asthma group was significantly lower than the control group (2.8% vs. 5%, OR = 0.31, 95%CI: 0.12-0.82, P = 0.021). No significant difference was detected in the genotypic frequencies for the remaining 5 polymorphisms between the two groups (All P0.05). CONCLUSION The study has indicated that rs2158177 polymorphism of the IL-13 gene is associated with asthma in ethnic Han Chinese from Qingdao. No association has been found between polymorphisms of TNF-alpha gene with susceptibility to asthma.

The release of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) during sludge drying is a major environmental problem because of its toxicity to human health. A series of experiments were performed to investigate the mechanisms and factors controlling the H2S release. Results of this study show that: (1) the biomass and activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in sludge were the major factors controlling the amount of H2S release, (2) the sludge drying temperature had an important effect on both the extent and the timing of H2S release from the sludge, and (3) decreasing sludge pH increased the H2S release. Based on the findings from this study, a new system that integrates sludge drying and H2S gas treatment was developed, by which 97.5% of H2S and 99.7% of smoke released from sludge treatments was eliminated.

To assess the association of polymorphisms of IL-4 gene (rs2243250, rs2243283) and IL-4R gene (rs1805012, rs1801275, rs1805010) with susceptibility to asthma among ethnic Chinese in Qingdao.For 400 asthma patients and 200 healthy subjects, above polymorphisms were detected with SnaPshot method.For rs1805012, the frequency of TC genotype in the asthma group was significantly lower than the control group (8.8% vs. 15.5%, χ (2)= 6.498, P= 0.039), and so were the frequencies of TC+ CC genotypes (9.0% vs. 15.5%, χ (2) = 5.522, P= 0.019) and the C allele (4.6% vs. 7.7%, χ (2) = 4.729, P= 0.039). No significant difference was detected between the two groups in the frequency of the remaining four polymorphisms or the haplotypes formed by rs2243250 and rs2243283 (All P0.05).This study has indicated that rs1805012 polymorphism of IL-4R gene is associated with asthma in ethnic Han Chinese from Qingdao region. TC+ CC genotypes have a protective role against asthma compared with TT genotype. However, polymorphisms of IL-4 gene are not associated with susceptibility to asthma.
