Background Streptococcus suis (Ss) is a Gram-positive and anaerobic zoonotic pathogen that is susceptible to all populations and can cause meningitis, septicemia, endocarditis and arthritis in humans. Methods In this study, patients with meningitis who were admitted to our hospital with negative blood and cerebrospinal fluid culture were divided into a next-generation sequencing group and a control group. In the next-generation sequencing group, we used the next-generation sequencing method to detect pathogenic bacteria in the patients’ cerebrospinal fluid. In the control group, we used blood and cerebrospinal fluid bacterial culture method to detect pathogenic bacteria in the patients' cerebrospinal fluid. The detection rates of pathogenic bacteria in the cerebrospinal fluid of the two groups were compared and analyzed. Results A total of 18 patients were included in this study, including 8 patients in the next-generation sequencing group and 10 patients in the control group. The mean age (P = 0.613) and mean disease duration (P = 0.294) were similar in both groups. Patients in the next-generation sequencing group had a leukocyte count of 13.13 ± 4.79 × 109, a neutrophil percentage of 83.39 ± 10.36%, and a C-reactive protein level of 134.95 ± 107.69 mg/L. Patients in the control group had a temperature of 38.32 ± 1.07, a leukocyte count of 8.00 ± 2.99 × 109, and a neutrophil percentage of 74.61 ± 8.89%, and C-reactive protein level was 4.75 ± 6.8 mg/L. The statistical results showed that the leukocytes (P = 0.013) and C-reactive protein levels (P = 0.001) were significantly higher in the patients of the next-generation sequencing group than in the control group. No statistically significant differences were seen in body temperature and neutrophil percentage between the two groups (P > 0.05). The incidence of intracranial pressure and meningeal irritation signs were similar in the two groups (P > 0.05). The detection rate of Streptococcus suis in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients in the next-generation sequencing group was 100%, and the detection rate of Streptococcus suis in the cerebrospinal fluid of the control group was 0%. Conclusion The detection rate of Streptococcus suis infection in cerebrospinal fluid by next-generation sequencing was significantly higher than that by blood and cerebrospinal fluid bacterial culture. Therefore, the diagnosis of porcine streptococcal meningitis by next-generation sequencing method is worthy of clinical promotion and application.

Severe burns can cause lung damage. Mir-21 is a promising biomarker for inflammatory response. However, the expression and role of Mir-21 in lung injury have not been elucidated. SD rats were divided into control group; model group; Mir-21 inhibition group; Mir-21 inhibition + SIRT1 inhibitor (nicotinamide) group followed by analysis of Mir-21 expression by real time PCR, arterial blood gas index and lung wet-to-dry weight ratio, lung tissue MPO and SOD activities, protein content and cell count in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, secretion of TNF-α and IL-2 by ELISA, SIRT1 expression by Real time PCR and ELISA and Akt and NF-κB level by Western blot. Compared with control group, model group showed significantly decreased PaO2 and pH, increased W/D and MPO activity increased, decreased SOD activity, increased protein content and cell count in BALF, Mir-21 expression, and secretion of TNF-α and IL-2, decreased SIRT1 expression, and promoted pAkt and NF-κB expression (P < 0 05). Down-regulation of Mir-21 significantly improved blood gas index, decreased W/D and MPO activity, increased SOD activity, decreased TNF-α and IL-2 secretion; increased SIRT1 expression, and decreased pAkt and NF-κB expression (P < 0 05). However, SIRT1 inhibitor significantly reversed the effect of down-regulation of Mir-21 on the protection of lung injury. Downregulation of Mir-21 regulates SIRT1-Akt-NFκB pathway and oxidative stress, reduces inflammation, and thus alleviates burn-induced lung injury, and may be a new option for treating acute lung injury.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the value of next-generation sequencing for the diagnosis of Streptococcus suis meningitis. METHODS: Patients with meningitis in the Department of Neurology of the Hainan General Hospital were recruited and divided into a next-generation sequencing group and a control group. In the next-generation sequencing group, we used the next-generation sequencing method to detect the specific pathogenic bacteria in the patients. In the control group, we used the cerebrospinal fluid bacterial culture method to detect the specific pathogenic bacteria in the patients. RESULTS: A total of 28 participants were recruited for this study, with 14 participants in each group. The results showed similarities in both the average age and average course of the disease between the two groups (p>0.05). The white blood cell count, percentage of neutrophils, and level of C-reactive protein in the next-generation sequencing group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p0.05). In the next-generation sequencing group, all patients (100%) were detected as having had the S. suis meningitis infection by next-generation sequencing, while only 6 (43%) patients in the control group had been detected as having the S. suis meningitis infection by cerebrospinal fluid bacterial culture. CONCLUSIONS: The positive detection rate of S. suis by the next-generation sequencing method was significantly higher compared with using a cerebrospinal fluid bacterial culture. Therefore, the next-generation sequencing method is valuable for the diagnosis of S. suis meningitis and is worthy of clinical application.

The present study aimed to identify microRNAs (miRNAs) that may be crucial for the mechanism of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) treatment in cisplatin‑induced acute kidney injury (AKI) and to investigate other potential drugs that may have a similar function. Transcriptomics (GSE85957) and miRNA expression (GSE66761) datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) were identified using the linear models for microarray data method and mRNA targets of DEMs were predicted using the miRWalk2.0 database. The crucial DEGs were screened by constructing a protein‑protein interaction (PPI) network and module analysis. Functions of target genes were analyzed using the database for annotation, visualization and integrated discovery. Small molecule drugs were predicted using the connectivity map database. As a result, 5 DEMs were identified to be shared and oppositely expressed in comparisons between AKI model and control groups, and between MSC treatment and AKI model groups. The 103 DEGs were overlapped with the target genes of 5 common DEMs, and the resulting list was used for constructing the miRNA‑mRNA regulatory network, including rno‑miR‑210/Serpine1 and rno‑miR‑378/Fos. Serpine1 (degree=17) and Fos (degree=42) were predicted to be hub genes according to the topological characteristic of degree in the PPI network. Function analysis indicated Serpine1 and Fos may be inflammation‑related. Furthermore, gliclazide was suggested to be a potential drug for the treatment of AKI because the enrichment score was the closest to ‑1 (‑0.9). In conclusion, it can be speculated that gliclazide may have a similar mechanism to MSC as a potential therapeutic agent for cisplatin‑induced AKI, by regulating miR‑210/Serpine1 and miR‑378‑/Fos‑mediated inflammation and cell apoptosis.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) can regulate disease progression, including sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI). This research aimed at investigating the function of circ_0003420 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated lung cells, as well as the functional mechanism.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used for inflammation analysis. Cell viability and proliferation were examined using Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and EdU assay. Cell apoptosis was measured by flow cytometry. Western blot was used for protein detection. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay was performed for quantification of circ_0003420, microRNA-424-5p (miR-424-5p) or toll-like receptor (TLR4). The interaction between miR-424-5p and circ_0003420 or TLR4 was conducted through dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay.Lung cell inflammation and apoptosis were promoted, but cell viability and proliferation were inhibited by LPS. Silence of circ_0003420 attenuated the LPS-mediated lung cell injury. Circ_0003420 could interact with miR-424-5p. The protective function by knockdown of si-circ_0003420 was relieved by miR-424-5p inhibition in LPS-treated cells. TLR4 served as a downstream target of miR-424-5p. Overexpression of miR-424-5p repressed inflammatory and apoptotic damages in LPS-treated lung cells via downregulating TLR4. Circ_0003420 upregulated the TLR4 level by targeting miR-424-5p and circ_0003420 regulated the NF-κB signaling pathway through the miR-424-5p/TLR4 axis.These results uncovered that circ_0003420 contributed to the LPS-induced lung cell injury via activating the miR-424-5p/TLR4-related NF-κB signaling pathway. Circ_0003420 might be a therapeutic target in sepsis-induced ALI.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a fatal epidemic has swept across the world, especially in India where the epidemic situation is the most serious. For COVID-19 patients, pulmonary rehabilitation training plays a significant role. However, it is still a controversial issue regarding the efficacy of WeChat APP-based pulmonary rehabilitation training in improving lung function, quality of life and bad mood of COVID-19 patients. To clarify this issue, a meta-analysis was conducted in this present study, so as to provide a basis for rehabilitation guidance of COVID-19 patients. Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, medRxiv, Web of Science, Scopus, Chinese Science Citation Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, and Wan-fang databases in May 2021 to identify randomized controlled trials and evaluate the effects of WeChat APP-based pulmonary rehabilitation training for COVID-19. Two researchers independently carried out data extraction. On the other hand, literature quality evaluation on the quality and meta-analysis of the included literature was performed with Revman5.3 software. Results: The results of this meta-analysis will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. Conclusion: This study will provide reliable evidence-based evidence on the effects of WeChat APP-based pulmonary rehabilitation training on lung function, bad mood, and quality of life in patients with COVID-19. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval was not required for this study. Objective: To investigate the nursing effect of nasoscopically assisted nasogastri tube and nasojejunal tube placement. Methods: 94 patients who need to place nasogastric tube and nasojejunal tube to establish enteral nutrition were randomly divided into two groups: the observation group (n=49) and control group (n=45). The patients in the observation group received nasogastric tube placement and jejunal nutrition tube placement, and the patients in the control group received general gastroscope and placed gastric tube and jejunal nutrition tube through mouth. Success rate of catheterization, catheter pain score, satisfaction score, vital signs, completion time of catheterization, and complication were collected. Results: the fluctuation of vital signs in control group was significantly higher than that in observation group. There was statistical significance between two groups in vital signs after intervention (P0.05). The catheter pain score is obviously improved in the observation group compared with control group after intervention. The improvement score of satisfaction in the observation group was 91.47±7.65 points, and that in the control group was 83.64±5.24 points. The completion time of catheterization was improved in the observation group compared with control group. BACKGROUND Acute kidney injuries are common in the medical intensive care unit. Generally, intravenous normal saline is administered in critically ill patients but it is associated with acute kidney injury. Current knowledge of chloride and its effect on the physiological functions of the kidney is limited. The objectives of the study were to compare the safety of chloride-restrictive intravenous fluid administration against that of chloride-liberal regarding acute kidney injuries. METHODS Data regarding RIFLE (risk, injury, failure, loss, and end-stage renal failure) categories, Kidney Disease: Improved Global Outcomes (KDIGO) stage, Δ creatinine, and requirements of renal replacement therapy of 285 patients admitted to medical intensive care unit for critical illness during 4-months from the hospitalisation were retrospectively collected and analysed. Patients received chloride-liberal intravenous fluid (CL cohort, n = 163) or that of chloride-restrictive (CR cohort, n = 122) during bundle-of-care. Stroke is a fatal disease with high disability and mortality and there is no credible treatment for stroke at present. Studies on stroke are extensively developed to explore the underlying mechanisms of ischemic and reperfusion injuries. Herein, we investigated the functions of microRNA let-7f (also termed let-7f-5p) in vascular endothelial cell dysfunction. The bEnd.3 cells were stimulated with oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD/R) to mimic cell injury in vitro. CCK-8 assays, flow cytometry and western blot analyses were conducted to examine the viability and apoptosis of bEnd.3 cells. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses were employed to measure RNA expression. Endothelial cell permeability in vitro assay was employed to assess endothelial permeability of bEnd.3 cells, and expression levels of proteins associated with cell apoptosis or blood-brain barrier (BBB) were detected by western blot analyses. Luciferase reporter assay was conducted to explore the combination between let-7f and HMGA2. We found that OGD/R induced injuries on endothelial cells (bEnd.3) by decreasing cell viability and promoting cell apoptosis. Let-7f exhibited low expression in bEnd.3 cells under OGD/R. Let-7f overexpression increased the viability of bEnd.3 cells and inhibited cell apoptosis. In addition, the endothelial permeability of bEnd.3 cells was increased by OGD/R and reversed by let-7f overexpression. The levels of tight junction proteins (ZO-1 and occludin) were downregulated by OGD/R and then reversed by let-7f overexpression. Mechanistically, HMGA2 is a target gene of let-7f and its expression was negatively regulated by let-7f. Rescue assays revealed that HMGA2 overexpression reversed the effects of let-7f overexpression on cell viability, cell apoptosis, endothelial permeability, and BBB function. In conclusion, let-7f alleviates vascular endothelial cell dysfunction by downregulating HMGA2 expression under OGD/R.

Twelve pathological laughing and crying patients with isolated pontine infarction were included, along with 12 age- and gender-matched acute isolated pontine infarction patients without pathological laughing and crying, and 12 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. We examined both the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation and the regional homogeneity in order to comprehensively evaluate the intrinsic activity in patients with post-stroke pathological laughing and crying. In the post-stroke pathological laughing and crying group, changes in these measures were observed mainly in components of the default mode network (medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate cortex, middle temporal gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus and inferior parietal lobule), sensorimotor network (supplementary motor area, precentral gyrus and paracentral lobule), affective network (medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate cortex, parahippocampal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus and inferior temporal gyrus) and cerebellar lobes (cerebellum posterior lobe). We therefore speculate that when disinhibition of the volitional system is lost, increased activation of the emotional system causes pathological laughing and crying.

Glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs) are responsible for the initiation and progression of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), and microRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in this disease. However, the mechanisms underlying the role of miRNAs in the stemness of GSCs have not been completely elucidated. We previously showed that miR-181a is downregulated in GBM and may predict prognosis in patients with this disease. Here, we demonstrate that the upregulation of miR-181a suppressed GSC formation and inhibited GBM tumorigenesis by targeting the Notch2 oncogene. We found that miR-181a was downregulated in GSCs derived from human glioblastoma U87MG and U373MG cells. The high expression of miR-181a inhibited the levels of stemness-related markers CD133 and BMI1, attenuated sphere proliferation, promoted cell apoptosis, and reduced the tumorigenicity of GSCs. MiR-181a decreased the expression of Notch2 by targeting the 3'-untranslated region of its mRNA. Notch2 overexpression inhibited the effects of miR-181a downregulation on GSCs, and was negatively correlated with miR-181a expression. Moreover, high Notch2 expression together with low miR-181a expression was correlated with a shorter median overall survival for GBM patients. Together, these data show that miR-181a may play an essential role in GSC formation and GBM progression by targeting Notch2, suggesting that Notch2 and miR-181a have potential prognostic value as tumor biomarkers in GBM patients.

Rare earth penetration technology was adopted to achieve BaTiO 3 conductive powders. The effects of the penetration temperature on the resistivity, phase composition and microstructure were investigated. The results indicated the variation trend of the resistivity at lower temperatures ( 800 °C), Moreover, the resistivity of Sm-penetrated BaTiO 3 powders at 600 °C (SBT-T1) was surprisingly low (2.41×10 −1 Ω m), which can be a superior candidate for electronic application. Sm 3+ cations have been penetrated into BaTiO 3 powders effectively and Ba 2+ has been replaced by Sm 3 + according to XRD and XPS analysis. It was the homogeneous morphology of SBT-T1 powders and the highest content of Sm 3+ cations that led to its lowest resistivity. Based on the experiments, the Sm-penetration process also has been discussed.

Radiotherapy (RT) serves as the most efficient treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and can cause carotid stenosis. This work compared the incidence of significant carotid stenosis between intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and two-dimensional conventional radiotherapy (2D-RT) for NPC and explored the risk factors. We retrospectively reviewed 233 cases with NPC who underwent carotid ultrasound post IMRT or 2D-RT from 2006 to 2015. The incidence of significant stenosis after RT was 19.3%. Significant stenosis was identified in 20 (14.6%) of 137 patients treated with IMRT and 25 (26.0%) of 96 patients with 2D-RT, respectively (p = 0.035). Multivariate logistic analysis indicated age (odds ratio = 1.054, 95% CI = 1.011–1.099, p = 0.014), radiation technique (IMRT) (odds ratio = 0.471, 95%CI = 0.241–0.919, p = 0.027) and time interval (odds ratio = 1.068, 95%CI = 1.033–1.105, p = 0.001) as independent predictors for significant carotid stenosis. Our study suggests that IMRT was associated with decreased incidence of significant carotid stenosis versus 2D-RT for NPC. Prevention and carotid ultrasound should be considered for older NPC survivors with longer interval from RT, especially those treated with 2D-RT.

Objective: Radiation-induced brachial plexus injury is a devastating complication that occurs after radiotherapy in the vicinity of the brachial plexus. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the most common type of cancer in Guangdong Province, is primarily treated with radiotherapy with subsequent side effects. However, radiation-induced brachial plexus injury is rarely reported in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. To draw attention to this correlation, we analyzed the clinical characteristics including the imaging findings of 10 patients suffering from radiation-induced brachial plexus injury for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods: We considered the patients’ medical histories, analyzed their clinical characteristics, and monitored the long-term efficacy of treatment. Results: The total irradiation dose of the nasopharynx ranged from 66.6 to 74 Gy, and that of the supraclavicular fossa ranged from 60 to 70 Gy. The mean latency was 8.2+5.5 years. Seven patients initially complained of bilateral weakness, and three patients complained of isolated pain. The injuries of eight patients reached Grade 3 or worse. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a low signal on T1-weighted images and a high signal on short tau inversion recovery sequences in all cases. Swollen nerve fibers were clearly displayed in magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging. Electromyography showed myokymia in three patients. With conservative therapy, only one patient was temporarily relieved of pain, while the conditions of others were not ameliorated. Conclusions: Radiation-induced brachial plexus injury is a late but catastrophic complication in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Clinicians should be aware of radiation-induced brachial plexus injury when deciding on treatment and should give them regular follow-up post radiotherapy.

In recent years, occurrence of "general paresis (GP)" has increased significantly because of the increasing incidence of syphilis in China. Early diagnosis plays a very important role for effective treatment. Incidence is becoming extensive enough to warrant an updated investigation of the clinical characteristics of GP. The authors retrospectively reviewed 116 cases of GP in Guangzhou, China, and analyzed its incidence and clinical appearance, as well as the characteristics of EEG, neuroradiology, serum, and cerebrospinal fluid examinations. Of the 116 GP patients, clinical symptoms presented frequently on admission were a variety of psychiatric-behavioral symptoms and varying degrees of dementia. Positive sucking reflex was the most common sign, as well as hyperreflexia and Argyll-Robertson pupil. EEG data mainly showed slightly abnormal EEG activity, with increased δ waves. Focal atrophy in one or multiple cerebral regions was evident on neuroimage. The prevalence of GP extends to various social strata or classes, with clinical presentation varying considerably among patients. For patients with progressive cognitive and behavioral deterioration, accompanied with psychotic and/or affective behavioral disorders or cerebral atrophy of unknown cause, general paresis should be considered.

Objective It is generally acknowledged that drug dependence is connected with abnormal functional organization in the individual’s brain. The present study aimed to identify the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) abnormality with the cerebral networks involved in betel quid dependence (BQD) by resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods With fMRI data measured from 33 resting-state BQD individuals and 32 non-addicted and age-, sex-, education-matched healthy controls, we inquired into the BQD-related changes in FC between the regions of ACC with the whole brain involved in BQD individuals using a region of interest vised method, and to identify the relation of the alteration with the severity of BQD and duration. Results Compared to controls, the BQD group showed increased connectivity from ACC to the regions of the reward network (brainstem including midbrain regions such as the ventral tegmental area and pons, caudate, thalamus) and cerebellum. Decreased connectivity was observed in the BQD group in regions from ACC to the default mode network (medial prefrontal cortex and precuneus) and para Hippocampal/hypothalamus. Specifically, the BQD scale was positively correlated with increased FC of right ACC to left thalamus and left ACC to pons; the durations were negatively correlated with FC of right ACC to left precuneus. Conclusion These disturbances in rsFC from ACC to the reward network and DMN revealed by fMRI may have a key function in providing insights into the neurological pathophysiology underlying BQD-associated executive dysfunction and disinhibition. These findings may contribute to our better understanding of the mechanisms underlying BQD.

To investigate the expression and clinical significance of miR-181a and its target genes in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the expression levels of miR-181a and three target genes in human normal brain tissues and GBM were analyzed in silico using gene microarray, gene ontology, KEGG pathway and hierarchical clustering analysis followed by validation with quantitative RT-PCR. Our results show that miR-181a is down-regulated in GBM patients. The three target genes, ANGPT2, ARHGAP18 and LAMC1, are negatively correlated with the expression of miR-181a. Moreover, high expression of ANGPT2 or LAMC1 together with large size of GBM is correlated with a shorter median overall survival. In conclusion, our results showed that miR-181a and it targets ANGPT2 and LAMC1 might be predictors of prognosis in GBM patients.

Evodiamine (EVD), a major alkaloid compound extracted from the dry unripened fruit Evodia fructus (Evodia rutaecarpa Benth., Rutaceae), has various pharmacological effects. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the possible anti-ulcerogenic potential of EVD and explore the underlying mechanism against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in mice. Administration of EVD at the doses of 20, 40mg/kg body weight prior to the ethanol ingestion could effectively protect the stomach from ulceration. The gastric lesion was significantly ameliorated in the EVD group compared with that in the model group. Pre-treatment with EVD prevented the oxidative damage and decreased the levels of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) content, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). In addition, EVD pretreatment markedly increased the serum levels of glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), decreased malonaldehyde (MDA) content in serum and activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO) in stomach tissues compared with those in the model group. In the mechanistic study, significant elevation of Rho, Rho-kinase 1 (ROCK1), ROCK2, cytosolic and nucleic NF-κBp65 expressions were observed in the gastric mucosa group, whereas EVD effectively suppressed the protein expressions of Rho, Rho-kinase 1 (ROCK1), ROCK2, cytosolic and nucleic NF-κBp65 in mice. Moreover, EVD showed protective activity on ethanol-induced GES-1 cells, while the therapeutic effects were not due to its cytotoxity. Taken together, these results strongly indicated that EVD exerted a gastro-protective effect against gastric ulceration. The underlying mechanism might be associated with the improvement of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory status through Rho/NF-κB pathway.

The central structure belt (CSB) in the Turpan-Hami Basin is composed of the Huoyanshan structure and the Qiketai structure, formed in the Late Triassic—Early Jurassic, and is characterized by extensional tectonics. The thickness of strata in the hanging wall of the fault is clearly larger than that in the footwall, and a deposition center evolved in the Taibei sag where the hanging wall of the fault is located. In the Late Jurassic, collision between the Lhasa block and the Eurasia continent resulted in the transformation of the Turpan-Hami Basin from an extensional into a compressional structure, and consequently in the tectonic inversion of the CSB from an extensional normal fault in the earlier stage to a compressive thrust fault in the later stage. Tertiary collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates occurred around 55 Ma, and this Himalayan orogenic event played a profound role in shaping the Tianshan area. A new 140-km-long seismic reflection profile provides a high-resolution crustal-scale image of the southern Dabieshan high-pressure (HP) metamorphic belt and the Yangtze foreland fold-and-thrust belt. The seismic image of the stacked section shows that the southern Dabieshan metamorphic terrane and Yangtze foreland belt are separated by a large north-dipping fault. In the foreland the upper crust is dominated by a series of folds and thrusts formed during the collisional stage in the mid-Triassic; it was reworked by crustal extension resulting in the formation of a late Jurassic and Cretaceous red-bed basin. The southern Dabieshan profile shows stacked crustal slabs developed along the margin of the collisional orogenic belt. The Moho reflectors at 10–11 s (∼30–33 km) are seismically prominent and segmented by a number of south-verging thrusts that were probably developed by foreland-directed thrusting of the deeply subducted continental crust during exhumation. The seismic reflection profile suggests that structures related to the Triassic–Jurassic subduction and exhumation of the Yangtze plate are preserved despite the severe crustal extension superimposed during the late Mesozoic and Cenozoic.

Four main faults outline the metamorphic terrain in the Dabie Mountains, central China. The difference of metamorphic grade in the northern, central and southern parts is well-established. This study suggests that these metamorphic rocks belong to three individual geological-tectonic units, which are the northern Andean-type magmatic arc, the central UHPM rock-bearing melange zone and the mobilized sedimentary cover and basement of Yangtze southern continental margin. An old ductile sheared zone through Wuhe and the south of Yuexi-Shuihou divides the Dabie metamorphic complex into northern and central units. The northern unit is predominantly occupied by tonalitic-trondhjemitic grey gneisses and amphibolites facies metasediments. Several approximately E-W-trending ductile-sheared mylonitic belts cut through the grey gneisses, and are especially developed in the northern and southern margins of the unit (high-strain zones). There is a series of lenses of basic granulites, serpentinites and Grt-pyroxenites in the high-strain zones. They do not have the petrological and geochemical characteristics of ophiolitic rocks. However, they may represent the root of an arc combined with grey gneisses. Our study also demonstrates that all rocks from the northern block did not undergo eclogite facies metamorphism. Mesozoic post-collisional granites occur extensively in the Dabie terrain, especially in the northern unit. Coesite and diamond-bearing eclogites in the central unit indicate a regional ultra-high-pressure metamorphism of pressures of > 30 kbar and temperature of 600–800°C. Except for eclogites, various ultra-high-pressure metamorphic (UHPM) rocks include ultramafic rocks, marbles and other metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. They, as large-scale blocks, are mixed with lower P-T encompassing host rock orthogneisses. The central block is a UHPM rock-bearing melange zone. The south block is a metasedimentary sequence of continental margin of the Yangtze plate. The boundary between the central and southern blocks is located in the north from Huangzhen, extending eastwards through the dam of Huangliangting reservoir. In addition, the Foziling Group, north of the Dabieshan terrain was possibly deposited in an extensional basin on an extensional shear zone, comparable to the basin in the Variscan of France and the Caledonides of S. Norway (Dewey, Ryan and Anderson, Geological Society Special Publication No. 76, pp. 325–343, 1993). The authors hope that this information will provide more valid evidence of regional tectonic evolution.

AIMS: Oxidative stress is frequently implicated in the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases. This study aimed to investigate the effects and their underlying mechanism(s) of edaravone upon hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))–induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in HT22 cells, a murine hippocampal neuronal model. METHODS: HT22 cells were treated with H(2)O(2) in the presence of various concentrations of edaravone or in its absence. A CCK‐8 assay, Hoechst 33342 staining, and flow cytometry were used to detect cytotoxicity and apoptosis. In addition, the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the expression of Bcl‐2, Bax, p‐ERK 1/2, p‐JNK, and p‐P38 proteins in HT22 cells were examined. RESULTS: Exogenous H(2)O(2) decreased cell viability in a concentration‐dependent manner and was associated with increased apoptosis and ROS production. Moreover, H(2)O(2) significantly activated and upregulated the expression of p‐ERK 1/2, p‐JNK, and p‐P38, while edaravon protected HT22 cells against H(2)O(2)‐induced injury by inhibiting the production of ROS and activating the MAPK signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide the first evidence that edaravone can protect H(2)O(2)‐induced cell injury in HT22 neurons via its antioxidant action. These findings suggest that edaravone may be useful in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders in which oxidative stress has been principally implicated.

Radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) is a rare but devastating late complication of radiotherapy, usually manifesting months to years after cancer treatment of the head and neck, resulting in rapidly progressive blindness in one or both eyes. The incidence of radiation-induced complications following radiotherapy, especially RION, is correlated with survival time of patients. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), the most common type of cancer in southern China, has been primarily treated with radiotherapy, with associated neural injuries. To our knowledge, there are few reports of RION among patients with NPC who have undergone radiotherapy. To study this further, we reviewed nine patients with NPC and RION after radiotherapy and examined the clinical manifestations of RION, characteristics of the ophthalmologic examination, MRI results and the treatments used. Of the nine patients with RION, the most frequent clinical presentation was a decline of vision with visual field defects in one or both eyes. Ophthalmologic examinations showed flame hemorrhages in the retina, optic nerve atrophy and cotton wool spots. T1-weighted enhanced MRI showed enhancement of the optic nerve and optic chiasm in six patients. Treatment with corticosteroids, anticoagulation and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment did not reduce visual loss or blindness in patients.

Based on petrological, structural, geological and geochronological research, the authors summarize the progress of ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphic rock study since 1989 by Chinese geoscientists and foreign geoscientists in the Dabie-Su-Lu region. The authors introduce and discuss a two-stage exhumation process for the UHP metamorphic rocks that have various lithologies; eclogite, ultramafics, jadeitic quartzite, gneiss, schist and marble. The metamorphic history of UHP metamorphic rocks is divided into three stages, that is, the pre-eclogite stage, coesite eclogite stage, and retrograde stage. Prior to UHP metamorphism, the ultramafics had a high temperature environment assemblage of mantle and others had blueschist facies assemblages. The granulite facies assemblages, which have recorded a temperature increase event with decompression, have developed locally in the Weihai basaltic rocks. Isotopic ages show a long range from > 700 Ma to 200 Ma. The diversity in protoliths of UHP metamorphic rocks may be related to the variation of isotopic ages older than 400 Ma. The Sm-Nd dating of ~ 220 Ma could reflect the initial exhumation stage after the peak UHP metamorphism in relation to the collision between the Sino-Korean and Yangtze blocks and subsequent events. Petrological and structural evidence imply a two-stage exhumation process. During the initial exhumation, the UHP metamorphic rocks were sheared and squeezed up in a high P/T regime. In the second exhumation stage the UHP metamorphic rocks were uplifted and eventually exposed with middle crustal rocks.

Neurotoxic homocysteine (Hcy) is thought to be an independent risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. This study is to determine whether HT22 cells, a murine hippocampal neuronal model, can be used as an in vitro model, besides the primary neuronal cultures, to investigate the effects of Hcy.MTS assay and Hoechst 33342/propidium iodide discrimination were used to assess the cell viability and cell death on undifferentiated and differentiated HT22 cells. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blot were used to determine the expression of N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor.We found that undifferentiated and differentiated HT22 cells responded to Hcy toxicity differentially, with the undifferentiated cells resistant while the differentiated cells sensitive. The underlying mechanism appeared to be the differential expression levels of NMDA glutamate receptor between the undifferentiated and differentiated cells. Similar to what have been observed in primary neuronal cultures, the Hcy toxicity in the differentiated HT22 cells was largely attenuated by NMDA receptor antagonists, MK-801 and memantine.These results suggest for the first time that the differentiation of HT22 cells could induce the expression of NMDA receptors, which lead to Hcy mediate concentration-dependent apoptosis-necrotic continuum of HT22 cell death. The differentiation status of the HT22 cells is important for modeling neurons in vitro, with the differentiated HT22 neurons resembling more characteristics of primary hippocampal neurons while the undifferentiated HT22 cells being proliferating neuronal precursor cells. The differentiated HT22 neurons can be used as a platform to study Hcy toxicity.

Coesite in a granulite host-rock is reported from Weihai City, northeastern Shandong Province, China. Coesite occurs as inclusions in garnet, which is separated from the fine-grained matrix of quartz + clinopyroxene + homblende by a zoned corona of plagioclase + clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + hornblende. Petrological evidence shows that the coesite-bearing granulite is retrograded from eclogite. Three stages in the metamorphic history of the granulite have been recognized. (i) Coesite-eclogite stage: The assemblage reconstructed from the inclusions in garnet is Mg-rich garnet + omphacite + coesite + rutile. (ii) During the granulite stage, these minerals reacted to form quartz + clinopyroxene + hornblende (in the matrix), clinopyroxene + albite (omphacite pseudomorphs) and plagioclase + clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + hornblende (as corona around garnet). (iii) Amphibolite stage: Earlier minerals were replaced by biotite, epidote and hornblende. The P-T conditions estimated with various geothermobarometers show a T-increasing and P-decreasing path from the eclogite stage (T ∼ 720°C, P > 28 kbar) to the granulite stage (T ∼ 850°C, P ∼ 10 kbar). Thus the exhumation of the ultra-high-pressure rocks in Weihai proceeded under increasing temperature, and may not have been as fast as it was thought before

Calderitic garnet occurs in Al-poor granitic gneisses of the Donghai area in the ultra high-pressure terrane of eastern China. Calderitic garnet-bearing samples reequilibrated under greenschist-epidote amphibolite facies conditions, which postdated the ultra high-pressure metamorphism. Such samples contain quartz, K-feldspar and albite as major constituents with subordinate amounts of aegirine-augite, Zn-rich biotite (ZnO=2.7 wt% maximum), titanite, hematite, allanite and zircon with garnet. A small muscovite crystal occurs as an inclusion in albite. The calderitic garnet occurs as a rim around andradite-spessartine garnet or as anhedral grains in a matrix of equigranular felsic minerals. The empirical formula of the calderite-rich part is (Ca1.69Mg0.02Mn1.16Fe2+0.10)(Fe3+1.58Al0.40Ti0.03)Si3O12. Calderitic garnet is stable in a Al-poor environment and probably cannot coexist with muscovite/paragonite and epidote as suggested by the idealized reactions of calderite+muscovite/paragonite → spessartine+K-feldspar/albite+quartz+H2O and calderite+epidote → grossular-spessartine garnet+hematite+quartz+H2O.

Two late Palaeozoic collisions produced the ancestral Tien Shan Range. Extension following the younger collision, preceded a phase of thermal subsidence associated with fluvial and lacustrine sedimentation throughout the Jurassic, Cretaceous and early Tertiary. This thermal subsidence was interrupted by renewed movement on Palaeozoic reverse faults, caused by the Mesozoic collisions at the southern margin of Asia. The India/Asia collision in the early Tertiary has produced widespread thrusting in the Tien Shan, which in turn is responsible for the formation of active foreland basins at the southern and northern margins of the range and similar basins within the range itself. This compression produced uplift and relief, and consequent erosion gave rise to alluvial fans, braidplains and ephemeral lakes in an extremely arid environment.

It has been suggested by the first voxel-based morphometry investigation that betel quid dependence (BQD) individuals are presented with brain structural changes in previous reports, and there may be a neurobiological basis for BQD individuals related to an increased risk of executive dysfunction and disinhibition, subjected to the reward system, cognitive system, and emotion system. However, the effects of BQD on neural activity remain largely unknown. Individuals with impaired cognitive control of behavior often reveal altered spontaneous cerebral activity in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and those changes are usually earlier than structural alteration.Here, we examined BQD individuals (n = 33) and age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy control participants (n = 32) in an resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study to observe brain function alterations associated with the severity of BQD. Amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) values were both evaluated to stand for spontaneous cerebral activity. Gray matter volumes of these participants were also calculated for covariate.In comparison with healthy controls, BQD individuals demonstrated dramatically decreased ALFF and ReHo values in the prefrontal gurus along with left fusiform, and increased ALFF and ReHo values in the primary motor cortex area, temporal lobe as well as some regions of occipital lobe. The betel quid dependence scores (BQDS) were negatively related to decreased activity in the right anterior cingulate.The abnormal spontaneous cerebral activity revealed by ALFF and ReHo calculation excluding the structural differences in patients with BQD may help us probe into the neurological pathophysiology underlying BQD-related executive dysfunction and disinhibition. Diminished spontaneous brain activity in the right anterior cingulate cortex may, therefore, represent a biomarker of BQD individuals.

An ultrahigh pressure ductile shear melange crops out on the beach of Yangkou Bay near Qingdao City. The melange is composed of weakly deformed blocks in a highly ductilly flow mylonites. Ultrahigh pressure metamorphic (UHPM) tectonite includes strongly deformed eclogite and mylonitized eclogite. Coesite occurs in the tectonite as both interstitial mineral and inclusions in garnet and omphacite, indicating that the deformation took place in the stability field of coesite (800–850°C, >30 GPa) in the upper mantle. Coesite is rounded or short prismatic grains with undulatory extinction, and often fractured, suggesting brittle deformation. Garnet is also characterized by brittle fractures and sometimes necked and slightly elongated. Omphacite is elongated, with long axis preferred orientation. Undulatory extinction, subgrains and dynamically recrystallized grains suggest plastic flow of omphacite. Ultrahigh pressure metamorphic tectonite was probably formed in the ductile shear zone during the early stage of exhumation of the ultrahigh pressure metamorphic rocks. Its kinematic indicators point to the transport direction of the UHPM slab during the early stage of exhumation.
