Abstract

In today's customer-centric business environment, a firm's ability to allocate its customers to available warehouses can be translated into a competitive advantage. With its increasing significance, the problem of allocating a set of customers to multiple warehouses has begun to draw attention from practitioners and academicians alike. This paper proposes a mathematical model and an efficient solution procedure for the bi-criteria allocation problem involving multiple warehouses with different capacities. The proposed solution procedure utilizes a genetic algorithm that is designed to find Pareto optimal solutions for this problem in a short period of time. The application of the proposed model and solution procedure to a real-world problem demonstrates its usefulness and practicality. Abstract

In a typical location-allocation problem, customer demand data are often aggregated according to some arbitrary spatial points (e.g. population centers) or boundaries (e.g. census districts). Since such points or boundaries do not represent true sources of customer demands, allocation of aggregated customers to distribution centers can lead to underutilization of distribution centers and deterioration of customer services. In an effort to design a supply chain network that maintains the best balance of transportation cost and customer service, this paper proposes a new model based on naive balanced star spanning forest formulation. This model goes beyond traditional mathematical programming by incorporating a genetic algorithm that is proven to be effective in dealing with the NP-hard problem. Over the years, most of the firms have focused their attention to the effectiveness and efficiency of separate business functions. As a new way of doing business, however, a growing number of firms have begun to realize the strategic importance of planning, controlling, and designing a supply chain as a whole. In an effort to help firms capture the synergy of inter-functional and inter-organizational integration and coordination across the supply chain and to subsequently make better supply chain decisions, this paper synthesizes past supply chain modeling efforts and identifies key challenges and opportunities associated with supply chain modeling. Abstract

Asymmetric information between logistics service demanders and logistics service providers may lead to poor service or high service price, and thus cause losses for logistics service demanders. However, a logistics contract is difficult to monitor as a service process in real time. In this paper, SLA management is introduced into business process management of third-party logistics services. Measurement methods for SLA metrics in logistics are analyzed and a monitoring mechanism is proposed as a control program whose main task is to realize the instantiation of SLA metrics. The mechanism is demonstrated by a typical transportation service process of a third party logistics service provider. The measurement process of an SLA metric is then described in detail and the compliance of the logistics SLA is also analyzed and discussed. In the end, the delivery process of a logistics SLA report is given. The proposed monitoring mechanism is an effective method for the monitoring of service level parameters to deliver a proper level of logistics service based on customer requirements. Quality of service can be monitored in real time.

Abstract

Byline: Yuxiang Yang, Hokey Min, Gengui Zhou In the era of global financial crisis, every penny counts. Thus, the exclusive use of virgin materials for production no longer makes economic sense. As a viable alternative to the use of virgin materials, recycling has become a popular business practice. Recycling, however, requires dramatic changes in business paradigms that include the coordination of both forward and reverse logistics flows, the substitution of disposal for salvage, and the tracing of products throughout their entire life cycles. These changes are often preceded by cultural changes across the supply chain. To embark on the successful change in reverse logistics activities, this paper proposes a Theory of Constraints (TOC) that can map necessary changes in the supply chain and guide those changes within various system constraints. The usefulness of TOC is validated by applying it to the recycling processes of automobile tyres in the burgeoning Chinese automobile industry.
