9. Daoist/Taoist Altruism and Wateristic Personality: East and West

Abstract

Based on the Daoist/Taoist model of water-like (or wateristic) personality features (Lee, 2003, 2004), four hypotheses were derived with a focus on altruism and modesty. A total of 122 Chinese college students and 106 American college students participated in this cross-cultural study. It was found (1) that American college students were more altruistic than Chinese counterparts; (2) that levels of modesty were more trait-specific than culture-specific; and (3) that Chinese participants were more altruistic and receptive toward outgroup members or outsiders (e.g., aliens) than American counterparts in uncertain situations. Theoretical implications are also discussed.

Abstract

The dehydrogenation of saturated substrates is fundamentally essential for producing value-added unsaturated organic molecules both in academia and industry. In recent years, homogeneously catalyzed acceptorless C–C, C–N, and C–O bond desaturations have attracted increasing attention due to high atom economy, environmentally benign nature, and wide availability of the starting materials. Abstract

Diamond films have great potential for micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) application. For device realization, precise patterning of diamond films at micrometer scale is indispensable. In this paper, simple and facile methods will be demonstrated for smart patterning of diamond films, in which two etching techniques, i.e., plasma dry etching and chemical wet etching (including isotropic-etching and anisotropic-etching) have been developed for obtaining diamond microstructures with different morphology demands. Free-standing diamond micro-gears and micro-combs were achieved as examples by using the experimental procedures. It is confirmed that as-designed diamond structures with a straight side wall and a distinct boundary can be fabricated effectively and efficiently by using such methods.

Abstract

cited By 1; International audience; The FePt:MgO multi-layer nanocomposite thin films are deposited on MgO (100) substrates by using pulsed laser deposition method. The composition of FePt is Fe48Pt52. FePt nanoparticles (NPs) are embedded in MgO epitaxial layer periodically. The results of in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction show that MgO epitaxial layers grow into the layer-by-layer mode and FePt NPs grow into the island mode. The alternation of the two growth modes is achieved in the whole deposition process. The high resolution transmission electron microscope results show that the phase of FePt is converted from the disordered face-centered cubic structure into the ordered face-centered tetragonal L10 structure after annealing. The perfect crystalline FePt NPs (around 5 nm in diameter) are flat-hexagonal in shape and array layer by layer on MgO matrix. The M-H loop of the film shows that the ordering degree and magnetism are enhanced after annealing.

Abstract

In this study, 2,7-bi-(N-penothiazinyl)fluorenone was employed as photocatalyst (PC), ethyl α-bromophenylacetate (EBP) as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator, and photo-induced metal-free ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was performed at 25°C under blue light irradiation. PMMAs with well-defined architectures and precisely controlled chain lengths were synthsized. The kinetics results confirmed that molecular weights increased linearly with monomer consumption. The molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn) of the resultant PMMA were narrow. The polymerization was activated and deactivated by periodic light control process.1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were used to characterize the obtained PMMAs. Abstract

In this study, reduced grapheme oxide (RGO)/BiVO4composite was prepared and characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and UV spectrum. Photo-chemically-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully performed at 25°C in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with RGO/BiVO4as photoinitiator, FeCl3·6H2O/triphenylphosphine (PPh3) as catalyst, and ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate as ATRP initiator. MMAs were polymerized in a controlled manner under ultraviolet (UV) light and sunlight conditions. The results show that a first-order kinetics model was obeyed up to higher conversion. The reaction gave well-controlled PMMA with Mn,GPCclose to the theoretical value and a narrow MWD (Mw/Mn<1.5). The experiments of light on and off reveal the photoredox cycle between Fe(III) and Fe(II) species. The living character was further verified by the chain extension experiments. Abstract

Measurements of residual stress in beryllium thin film under standard Bragg-Brentano geometry are always problematic. In this article, a new experimental method using grazing- incidence X-ray diffraction is presented according to the convential sin2Ψ method, which effectively increases the signal-to-noise ratio. Analysis shows that the assumption (isotropic material) is logical, because the values of stress results from the three families of planes are camparable. The stress gradient can be measured at diffrenent grazing incidence angles. The results indicate the uniformity of the residual stress of the thin film along various Φ directions.
