Abstract

Background: Acute lung inflammation (ALI) is a serious health condition that causes severe pulmonary distress, tissue loss, and ultimately leads to death of the patient. Previously, theantagonisticrole of flavonoids has been extensively studied with respect to inflammation in cancer. Inflammatory reaction targeted during the lung cancer therapy. Aims and Objectives: In this study, the chemoprotective effect of resveratrol and its of mechanism of action against the Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung inflammation was investigated. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, we performed experiments using RAW 264.7 cells. LPS was used to induce inflammation in the lungs of Swiss Wistar rats that were randomly divided into different groups. The rats were treated with resveratrol in a dose-dependent manner. The lung tissue and dry/wet weight of lung tissue was estimated. The antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory parameters were also estimated. Results: According to results, resveratrol significantly reduced the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines including interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-18, IL-10, and antioxidant parameters viz., glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), respectively. Resveratrol significantly (P<0.001) reduced the weight of lung tissue and dry/wet of lung tissue at dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: In summary, resveratrol plays the role of a chemo-protective agent against the LPS-induced lung inflammation via anti-inflammatory and antioxidant mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The effects of henna (Lawsonia inermis) flower biomass on the enhanced bio-reduction of Cr(VI) were investigated in this study. The average Cr(VI) removal rate in the anaerobic system with the addition of henna flower powder achieved 2.04 mg L−1 h−1, which was much higher than the rates in the activated sludge control, autoclaved sludge control, and adsorption control. Under anaerobic conditions, the organic compounds in henna flower powder could be leached out from the solid phase to the mixed solution, and then fermented to volatile fatty acids and H2, acting as effective electron donors for the rapid bio-reduction of Cr(VI). The released and/or fixed lawsone not only shuttles electrons from the donor to the final acceptor of Cr(VI), but might also inversely improves the fermentation process of henna flower biomass. Abstract

Calcium alginate encapsulated Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles beads (CA-Ni/Fe beads) were synthesized to simultaneously remove Cu (II) and monochlorobenzene (MCB) from aqueous solution. SEM, EDS, and XRD analyses confirmed that Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were not oxidized and successfully encapsulated by calcium alginate (CA). The experiments showed that the encapsulation process improved the simultaneous removal efficiency of Cu (II) and MCB, from 83.9% to 86.7% for Cu (II) and 94.7% to 99.1% for MCB compared with bare Ni/Fe nanoparticles after 120. min treatment. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of Cu (II) and MCB increased with higher temperature, calcium alginate: Ni/Fe ratios and pH. Pseudo-second-order model for adsorption and pseudo-first-order model for the reduction process fitted the simultaneous removal of Cu (II) and MCB using CA-Ni/Fe beads. Based on the above results, it could be concluded that the simultaneous removal was a two-step process: firstly, the adsorption of Cu (II) and MCB on the CA-Ni/Fe beads; and secondly, reduction of Cu (II) and dehalogenation of MCB by Ni/Fe in CA-Ni/Fe beads. Finally, the efficiency of regenerated CA-Ni/Fe beads was tested using synthesized wastewater which showed a satisfactory removal efficiency of Cu (II) and MCB maintained at 83.8% and 91.7% after three times' regeneration. Abstract

Calcinated kaolin supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (K-nZVI) was synthesized and used for the removal of tetrad azo-group dye-Direct Fast Black G (DFBG) from aqueous solution. The results demonstrated that after reacting for 10 min with an initial concentration of DFBG 100 mg L-1 (pH 9.49), 78.60% of DFBG was removed using K-nZVI, while only 41.39% and 12.56% of DFBG were removed using nZVI and kaolin, respectively. K-nZVI with a mass ratio of nZVI nanoparticles versus kaolin at 1:1 was found to have a high degree of reactivity. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that nZVI was better dispersed when kaolin was present. XRD patterns indicated that iron oxides were formed after reaction. Fourier transforms infrared spectra (FTIR) and UV-visible demonstrated that the peak in the visible light region of DFBG was degraded and new bands were observed. Kinetics studies showed that the degradation of DFBG fitted well to the pseudo first-order model. The degradation of DFBG by K-nZVI was based on its adsorption onto kaolin and iron oxides, and subsequently reduction using nZVI was proposed. A significant outcome emerged in that 99.84% of DFBG in wastewater was removed using K-nZVI after reacting for 60 min. Refereed/Peer-reviewed
