6. Fluorination Induced Donor to Acceptor Transformation in A1–D–A2–D–A1-Type Photovoltaic Small Molecules

Abstract

With the development of diversity of non-fullerene acceptors, it is found that there is no clear boundary between electron donors and electron acceptors. Modulation of the electron donating and withdrawing properties of organic semiconductors is necessary for organic photovoltaics research. In this work, we designed and synthesized three A1-D-A2-D-A1-type (A represents acceptor unit and D represents donor unit) small molecules, named as M-0F, M-1F, and M-2F, respectively containing zero, one, and two fluorine atoms in the terminal acceptor segments (A1), respectively. Fluorination substitution was found to be able to downshift the HOMO and LUMO energy level, red-shift the absorption, and enhance the electron mobility. The M-0F exhibited the highest efficiency of 5.99% as a donor in fullerene-containing system and the lowest efficiency of 0.58% as an acceptor in fullerene-free system. While the M-2F performed the lowest efficiency of 0.97% as the donor and the highest efficiency of 2.65% as the acceptor. The electron-donating and electron-withdrawing property of M-1F are in-between that of M-0F and M-2F. Among the three molecules, the electron mobility is increased while the hole mobility is decreased with increasing fluorination. This work provides a typical example of tuning of the electron donating and withdrawing property without changes to the backbone of the conjugated molecules, which is important for further designing high performance solution processable small molecules.

Abstract

Significant progress has been made in organic solar cells over the past few years. However, the power conversion efficiency of all-small-molecule systems is still lower than that of polymer photovoltaics. Ternary strategies lead to a potential way to improve the performance of all-small-molecule organic solar systems. In this article, an all-small-molecule ternary organic solar cell is presented by incorporating a small amount of the IDIC acceptor into a ZR1-Cl : IDIC-4Cl based binary system. On the basis of the enhanced absorption spectrum, the good miscibility enabled by two structurally similar acceptors can potentially form receptor alloys, leading to a simultaneous increase in both short circuit current density and open circuit voltage to 18.64 mA cm(-2) and 0.90 V, respectively. Characterizations such as transmission electron microscopy and grazing-incidence wide-angle scattering confirmed good miscibility, ordered packing and high crystallinity in the ternary film with a fibrous structure that benefits electron transfer, increasing the fill factor to 69.66%. The simultaneous increment in short circuit current, open circuit voltage and fill factor increases the power conversion efficiency from 10.81% in the binary system to 11.65% in the ternary system.

Abstract

The crystal orientation of small molecules is one of the key parameters for developing high‐performance small molecule based organic field‐effect transistors. However, achieving a high degree of backbone alignment still remains a challenge, due to the sensitive nature of small molecules to processing conditions. Herein, the thin films of three conjugated small molecules, named as ZR1, ZR2‐C3, and Y6 are prepared by epitaxial‐crystallization on a highly oriented polyethylene (PE) substrate, resulting in the significant enhancement in charge transport properties. The maximum mobilities for aligned edge‐on molecules in the films enhance by up to 9.91 × 10−2 and 8.97 × 10−2 cm2 V−1s−1 for ZR1 and ZR2‐C3 films with conducting channel along small molecule backbones, which are 35‐ and 37‐fold that of the values evaluated in perpendicular to molecular backbones and nearly 23‐and 19‐fold beyond the values measured from unaligned films. Furthermore, the electron and hole mobilities of the small molecule Y6 with face‐on nature increase by nearly fourfold the values measured in perpendicular to the backbone direction and from unaligned films. This work demonstrates the epitaxial crystallization of thin films on oriented PE, offers a critical understanding of small molecules with different orientations and an effective approach for tuning charge transport toward high‐performance organic electronic applications.
